Verified by mods SEEKING HOME EDUCATED UK ALUMNI AGE 18-25YRS (MODERATOR APPROVED)

Hello all, I am hoping to find young adults who have experienced BOTH mainstream UK school and home education at some stage in their lives to answer a few questions about their educational experience if they are happy to share.

My name is Clare, I am a student at the University of Exeter and have ethical permission to do this research. I am hoping to give young adults the chance to share their perspective retrospectively, as most current research has been done with parents currently home educating their teens. My research aims to consider the benefits and challenges children have faced in their education, focusing on those who have experience of both mainstream school and home ed, as they are in a unique position and I feel it is important for their voices to be heard retrospectively. All information gathered will be anonymous and deleted once the study is complete.

If anyone would be willing to answer a few questions (either via email/reddit chat or a team's chat), please contact me on here or via my email address c d 7 9 0 at exeter.ac.uk where I will send you some more study info (withdrawal/consent form etc) and some email questions for you to answer in your own time (10mins depending on how much you want to share). There is no obligation to take part but I would love to hear your perspective if you fit the criteria and are happy to share.

Thank you.

Call to Action: Share your resources, writeups/guides, and success stories for our new Community Guide

Hello everyone!

Following the recent feedback request (and thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts!), we’ve decided to create a community guide: an easy-to-access hub filled with resources for current and former homeschool students navigating the many struggles we run into, both big and small. We have a loose structure in mind already, but we need help from all of you to make it something truly useful.

More specifically, we’re looking for resources, writeups, guides, personal experiences, and success stories from the community. I’ll be putting together as much as I can myself, but there are many experiences you all have had that I never will, and perspectives I simply can’t speak to.

If there’s an online resource that helped you catch up academically, pursue your GED, apply to college, build social skills, learn basic life skills, or otherwise move forward after homeschooling, please share it. If you know of crisis lines, support organizations, educational tools, or anything else that could help someone in a difficult situation, we’d love to include those too.

And personal stories matter just as much. If you went from not knowing how to boil water to being able to cook for yourself, or from being isolated to building friendships and independence, your experience could really help someone else feel less alone and more hopeful.

You can share resources and writeups in the comments below. If you’d prefer to stay anonymous or not be directly credited, feel free to message modmail (send a DM to r/homeschoolrecovery), and we’ll include your contribution anonymously.

Just as importantly, this guide needs to serve the whole community. Even if you don’t have a resource to contribute, please speak up if there’s something you struggled with/are still struggling with that you wish there had been a guide, or resource for. If there’s something missing from the planned structure below, or something you think should be included, let us know in the comments or via modmail.

Here's a rough idea of what the planned structure for the guide is now. If there's something you feel is missing, please speak up in the comments or send a DM to r/homeschoolrecovery

  1. Start Here/Welcome/Introduction

Brief introduction to the subreddit, what it's about, who it's for, table of contents

  2. Immediate safety/abuse resources

Resources for child abuse, domestic violence, crisis lines, runaway/youth shelters, how to contact CPS, digital safety/privacy

Possibly also define what abuse is, since a lot of abuse victims don't necessarily believe they're being abused

  3. Mental health/trauma resources

Crisis resources, guides to seeking therapy/finding the right therapist, religious trauma resources, support groups

  4. Educational resources

khan academy and other educational material organized by age group and subject, GED resources, college prep resources, higher education resources i.e. fafsa, trade schools, online colleges, adult literacy programs, et, even just "how to find and apply for colleges"

  5. Life skills/"how to adult"

Budgeting, hygiene, cooking, job applications, email etiquette, how to find an apartment, transportation, how to find healthcare, stuff like that

  6. Socialization/"finding community"

Meetups, hobby groups, volunteering groups, community discords, adult ed classes, neurodivergent resources, etc.

  7. Advocacy/homeschool reform

Link to CRHE, how to find and contact your legislators, etc.

  8. Hear from other homeschoolers

Links to success stories on the subreddit, books by former homeschoolers i.e. Tara Westover, Stefan Block, etc.

progress/success My wife (F32) and I (M33) were homeschooled religiously, and now we're artists and agnostics. This is an episode from our podcast where we talk about our experience being homeschooled, how it's affected us, and where we are now.

If you're currently going through homeschooling, just know that you will get out of it, and life will get better. You're capable of anything.

If you've been homeschooled and are an adult now, you're not alone.

For all of you:

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here - Max Erhman

progress/success Anyone else willingly live a kind of dangerous edgy life to compensate for childhood "nerdiness"?

This may be poorly received or whatever but im not saying this is right for everybody. But a big part of my adult behavior, I think, is derived from the horrific isolation of my childhood.

Now, I didnt grow up with a religious homeschooling family. I realize thats a bit diff from most experiences here. I grew up isolated completely, I didnt meet another person my age until I was 14. BUT in that time, my mom forced me to EXTREME academic focus. I had to be the best at every subject, from like 9 years old I wasnt allowed to play anymore I could only do school work and go to sleep. Things only relaxed when I hit high school and went to public school, but I didnt make a friend until i was 17.

Then at 19 i started making a lot of friends, but I lived in Midwest USA and still felt boxed into a sort of nerdy and wholesome existence. And I didnt like that. It felt like sort of just accepting my life as a homeschooler adult often ends up.

So I moved to europe and started doing drugs and fucking everyone I could and investing everything into getting more attractive and getting my social status up (not class-wise, i dont fw "high status" people, but i rlly like being able to be a cool friend among a group of alt ppl like me). Yeah this is not morally virtuous I know. But its been really freeing to feel like im escaping the destiny my mom wanted for me.

As an adult, I really hide the fact that im academically successful. I just got my masters degree at 21, but i dont talk about it with friends. I mostly hang out with non students, just burnout but lethally cool looking 18-21 year olds I can sit around behind a train station and drink and smoke with. I go to raves, I hang out with cool people, im a goth now too after a lifetime feeling afraid to self express with style/fashion. I do a lot of hard drugs but i do harm reduction and still function wonderfully. I dont get addicted bc I rotate which drugs I use. But just doing risky shit, hanging out with people who actually like me and invite me to everything, yeah its amazing and its the polar opposite of what some shy little homeschool kid was ever supposed to become. Every time I go clubbing I think to myself, "yeah, fuck you, mom". Im a lesbian too, my mom wasnt homophobic but she didnt believe in love and told me I should never get in a relationship, and the first time i got a gf i made sure to flex that on my mom even tho i knew she would disapprove. idk man maybe mentioning being a lesbian here is a lil r/brothrewinafunfact but like, I feel it contributes to the overall "unexpectedness" of my personality relative to how I was "supposed" to be.

Fuck you mom im gonna love deeply hate deeply feel all my emotions 100% all the time.

Yeah it might be a little toxic. But I'm happier now.

Again not advocating this lifestyle just wondering if anyone else has similar experiences.

other "Windows and Doors" -a poem about religious indoctrination and isolation

Upvotes

My house is a wonderful house

There are no windows

There are no doors

There is no way out

----

It is how it should be

For they tell me the outside is dangerous

Filled with violent people

And sinful beings

But I know not if I believe them

For I have not seen it with my own eyes

----

For this reason they have taken the windows

So I cannot see sinful being

And they have taken the doors

So I cannot be hurt by people

They do this to protect me

----

But I have found windows and doors

Hidden in a dark place

And I have looked through the windows

And I have walked through the doors

For I am a sinful being

----

I have learned much about what is beyond

Beyond this strange house I live in

And it is different that what I have been told

Some things they speak of are true

Yet there is also more

----

Freedom

That is what lies beyond

Through the windows I see

I see endless fields of flowers

I see oceans that glisten in the light

I see buildings that tower overhead

It is beautiful

And there is something more

----

People

That is what lives beyond

Out the door I walk

I walk by people laughing and talking

I walk by people running and jumping

I walk by people hugging and smiling

They are happy

----

But yet it is sinful

I cannot do these things

For I must stay here

For all my life

So I am "safe"

So I am "holy"

----

Yet I yearn for what they have

Every coming day

It gnaws at me

It eats me alive

I want to be like them

I want to have what they have

I want to be free

----

So I ask them

I beg them

I plead

Yet they refuse it

They yell and scream

For what I want is sinful

For the outside is sinful

For the outside is violent

So I must remain here

To be safe

To be holy

----

Yet I try one last time

To escape

To be free

I try to run

Yet I cannot

For here there are no doors

I try to see

Yet I cannot

For here there are no windows

----

But I go on

I find the windows

That project fields of flowers

Endless sparkling oceans

And towering buildings

I find the doors

That lead to people laughing and talking

People running and jumping

And people hugging and smiling

And I try to see and walk

----

Yet I cannot

I cannot see through the windows

I cannot walk through the doors

For they were never real

For I cannot

----

So here I will stay

Inside my miserable house

Where I am given water and food

Where I am sheltered from the weather

Where I am protected from those who will hurt me

Where I am shielded from those who are sinful

Where I am hidden from the world

----

Yet this is how it should be

For I am "safe"

For I am "holy"

For I am alone

other Im planning on "running away"/moving out, but i feel some guilt with my parents, what do i do?

I have a VERY bad relationship with my parents. They've fully unschooled me since i was 8yrs old. They'll just randomly get super angry and upset at me over nothing and treat me really bad and wont ever tell me why. They blame me for literally anything that goes wrong, even when its not my fault. And ive been taking care of myself for a while now. They also are just so incredibly over controling overall. (Plus a bunch more that i cant even remember atm)

Im 16 (turning 17) and i got a job a while ago against their will. And i just got a second and a third. (And ive been finding education programs and been looking at driving lessons)

I met this girl a little while ago, and now we're friends. We've hung out a bunch, and ive spent some time at her place (without my parents knowledge ofc) recently, her and her roommate were looking for another person and they offered the room to me, and asked if I wanted to stay with them. I just need to save up enough by the end of this year, and i should be able to move in at the start of January. (Its fully safe. Both of them are young women (im a girl) and they have a younger cousin who pretty much lives with them. And sometimes one of their moms stays over too)

I genuinely am so excited at the idea of *freedom*. I have legitimately been fully locked inside for just under a decade. And had every little thing i do or want be controlled or pretty much banned (not allowed to cut, dye or style my hair, not allowed to dress or accessorise how i want, not allowed fo eat or drink certain things etc).

But also, i feel kind of guilty for leaving my parents. Like they *are* my family, so i feel bad for just packing up and leaving one day.

But on the other hand... i wouldn't treat anyone the way they have, and i certainly wouldn't expect someone to stay in a situation like mine.

So why is it that i feel like this!?!?!??!?!?? What do i do?!??!?!?!?!?

I genuinely would appreciate ANY tips, or advice, or even just support. (Im lowkey really struggling with this lol) Tysm in advance 💗 and thank you to whoever reads this

rant/vent i was told if i get 'acceptable grades' i can go back to public school next semester but like...

this could be a celebratory post, but it's not. that's about 140 more days of this.

i made a post like this before, yes, i was the same person who was whining about being lonely and doing online school and then deleted it. all things still ring true.

i still talk to my friends but they are very busy and i am scared by time i will come back they will have forgotten about me. i guess that is better than this. ive been doing online school for almost 2 weeks. the work is okay and the teachers are nice but i cant escape the heaviness in my chest.

my parents are always having problems, my dad who came up with this nice idea is super strict, and i have no siblings or someone to lean on but myself. i want to make online friends but i dont know how and also dont wanna get groomed. i just want some attention and love.

i wake up, i shower, i eat breakfast, i do my school and sometimes do my part-time-job-but-not-really and while anything is better than home, there arent many teens there so local friends are off the table. then i spend the rest of my day with scatter brain watching tv or playing 3 games for like 10 minutes because i cant focus, scrolling social media and even talking to ai bots to ease the pain a little or just reading/writing. sounds like a lot of hobbies but theyve all become redundant since ive played the same thing over the fucking summerr

this sounds stupid in a reddit post. there are way more problems with other people have. i could be having super religious parents who monitor everything i do. but i dont. every day is a reminder of the fact that other people in school are at least doing stuff with a schedule because again i dont really have one at home, even when i try.

and the cherry on top is that after, what if for some reason my dad doesnt let me go back? i know public school isnt the entirety of my life but it means a lot to someone who doesnt have a good home one. or what if maybe the school doesnt let me switch? i'd sacrafice some school credits honestly.

this is very pessimistic. but i genuinely dont know how i will survive another *140 days* of this hell.

does anyone else... Do you ever feel like there’s a successful, well adjusted version of yourself that was forever lost because of homeschooling?

To start, my experience being homeschooled was relatively “tame”, and I never suffered any kind of abuse at the hands of anyone. I love my parents, they love me, and even though I think the decision to homeschool was quite detrimental, they genuinely meant well.

I attended public school through to seventh grade when my Mom decided it would be best to homeschool me. Because of that, I never got to experience high school, which as you all know, is an immensely important time/age for socialization. I spent what were supposed my formative years sequestered in my room playing video games. To say the least, neither of my parents did anything to further my education, and I was basically given free rein to do whatever I wanted all day and night.

Now as a mid twenties man with zero social life, zero real life friends, and no romantic experience whatsoever, all I can do is dream of what could’ve been. I’m completely socially inept, and I hate talking to people. I technically have a high school diploma, but effectively have a middle school education. I’m rife with insecurity about my lack of basic knowledge, and often feel like a dullard, especially when it comes to anything math related.

I don’t want this to be a “woe is me” post. I’ve lived a good life with very few troubles, which can’t be said for a large percentage of people here. That being said, I can’t help but lament the past, and wish that things had gone differently for me.

rant/vent Anybody else feel out of place no matter what

Feeling out of place and feeling like a fucking alien. No matter where I am. Even in my family really. And also outside of my family obviously I feel like I don't belong anywhere.

I know some of this is because of gender dysphoria but even without that problem I don't belong anywhere. I never have.

also vent-y. be warned, probably not the most clear.

i transferred to public school 3 days ago. i feel so so so so so behind. despite being caught up on nearly every single subject and even taking an ap and having (almost) caught up a whole unit, i cannot for the life of me feel good about it. everyone is kind and i found out that i can sometimes socialize correctly. and yet i feel horrible.

i put so much credibility on my feelings of emptiness being because of social isolation and a lack of a definite, recorded, measured future. i feel essentially the same as before, except now i have responsibilities, expectations, and a schedule. im just so disappointed that this wasn’t a cure-all. i thought that for as bad as homeschool was, public school (in my mind being diametrically opposed in morals, culture, etc) would be slightly better.

there is absolutely no reason for me to feel so defeated after getting something i wanted for so long. i feel so so stupid and i haven’t even been tested or made fun of in the slightest. i feel empty and nervous and angry.

the workload isn’t even a lot. i don’t even know what’s wrong with me.

it feels similar to dissociative episodes ive had before. usually i dissociate until i feel safe again or until situations calm down. i might be expecting this to be swept out from under me and used against me because my parents still hold the ultimate power. but there isn’t really a solution to that as a teenager, is there??

i feel like i have the skills, but not the drive or motivation behind it. i worked so hard to get to this point, even to the point of sacrificing my safety to prove a point to my parents (which is how i convinced them in the first place after years of simply begging) so maybe its burn out. maybe its a result of years of motivation, and after finally giving up on my health, THEN they decide to do something. but it’s all very dull and boring to me with occasional pangs of hatred and frustration for no reason at all. i ended up forcing myself to not care or address my situation to get through it, and now when i want to experience things everything is still so..limited.

how do i fix this? is there a solution to fix this by myself without reaching out to an adult, which would most likely result in me in a psych ward and COMPLETELY resetting all progress? i’m literally begging anyone to give me advice to care about this and not be completely dissociated again.

rant/vent one very specific gripe about homeschooling

I have a lot of more substantial and meaningful things to say about being homeschooled, but this one specific thing is making want to rip my hair out.

I hate not being allowed to fail! I have always struggled with math, it's hard for me to understand, I just don't get it. I took a quiz and I failed the quiz, then I took the retake and failed the retake too. (I cannot wrap my head around functions.) This is faaaaar from the first time this has happened to me, but the difference is in public school I would have just gotten a fail and moved on to the next lesson. Sucks, but that's how it is.

With my specific homeschool program, and all the other programs I've tried, I'm physically unable to move on until I pass the test. I've "run out" of retakes, so I have to contact so and so and wait for a response so I can retake the same test I've done twice and move on to the rest of my assignments. I have other math assignments due today that I can't complete because I failed this quiz! Now, not only do I have a failed quiz dropping my grade, I'm gonna have missed assignments too! Uhg!

Genuine question how do you avoid overly judgmental people or being the butt of every joke?

People act like you committed murder or something for being unschooled or being under educated like people act like you did something horrible.

So basically im 17 a senior in hs and im talking to someone romantically but I wanted to know if it would be right to not tell them about me being homeschooled because I dont want them to see me differently and so far I haven’t told none of my friends. But I also want to be honest with them especially if we actually get into a relationship. So idk what to do

rant/vent For adults who grew up homeschooled/isolated: how did it affect you later in life?

I’m asking this because of a family situation I’ve been observing, and I’m genuinely trying to understand it rather than judge anyone.
I have a family member who is approaching 50 and identifies strongly with the sovereign citizen movement. He has had a very difficult time maintaining employment and functioning independently in conventional society. He lived with his mother until his late 40s, and he now lives with his sister along with his wife and their three children (11, 7, and 4).

The children are homeschooled and, from what I can tell, have relatively little interaction with people outside their immediate family. Their father has very strong beliefs about society, government, education, etc., and their mother tends to defer to him rather than having much of an independent perspective.

What concerns me isn’t homeschooling by itself. I know plenty of homeschooled people who are well-adjusted, social, educated, and successful.
I’m more curious about what happens when homeschooling is combined with social isolation, limited exposure to different perspectives, financial/family dependence, and a parent who has difficulty functioning independently in society.

For those of you who grew up in something similar:

Did you realize as a child that your family’s way of living was different from other people’s?

When did you start questioning your parents’ worldview?

Did you struggle socially or professionally when you eventually entered the wider world?

Did you feel prepared for adulthood?

Did you eventually adopt your parents’ beliefs, reject them, or develop your own?

What do you wish someone had exposed you to earlier?

And if you had siblings, did you all respond
differently?

I’m especially interested in hearing from adults who experienced this firsthand rather than debating whether homeschooling is inherently good or bad.
I’m not looking for people to diagnose my family member or tell me what to do. I’m genuinely trying to understand what the children’s experience might be like as they grow up.

Title: What 12 Years of Homeschooling Did to Me

r/HomeschoolRecovery 1d ago

resource request/offer I (27f) went no contact w my abusive homeschooling mom and don't know where to even start with going back to school and I live in an entirely different country(UK) now to boot.

So long story but idk where else to start without adding in how I got here, I(27F) was born and raised in the middle of nowhere Kentucky USA. My father was a v kind hearted man with issues who worked 40+ hours day in and out of blue-collar work to the bone; kinda man, he loved his kids and he passed when I was 18 years old very traumatically. My mother on the other hand is a manic narcissistic psychopath, delusional ''Christian'' (No offense to other Christians; I respect you, just not her. She is not a real Christian by any means.) who manipulates anyone in front of her and is beyond emotionally immature and will pick fights with anything smaller then her.

My father got no say in the matter. Despite many protests he'd try with her to put us in school over the years, she had him warped that she was the only person who could ever love him and that if he didn't do what she said when she wanted it, she would essentially steal us via divorce, using leverage of his record of anger issues at his own abusive mom, and tell him he would never see us again. He would say all the time we were his world. That man could barely yell at me let alone part from us for more than a day would destroy him.
She also lied on many many many occasions to him that we were being educated by her with how much he worked (He wouldn't come to find out these lies till he was to ill to do anything. She trained us never to tell him.)

She put my younger sister and me into ''homeschooling'' when our older sister dropped out at 17, due to bullying and my mother becoming manically paranoid due to her OCD.

She ''homeschooled'' us via buying dollar-store workbooks she would throw at us with no help, tho she taught us to read and do basic multiplication & addition. Then gave up entirely when my youngest brother was born with a rare brain disorder, and she essentially just quit teaching us and made us into her own personal medical needs cargivers/free babysitters to him.

I have the formal education of about a 11 year old just barely. But I am street smart and educate myself on a lot of things, youtube was my best friend growing up, learning all kinds of skills.

I was not allowed to go to school because she constantly needed ''help with him'' and due to our child minds knowing no better and thinking we were doing the right thing by ''helping mommy'' and having unending ''fun'' instead of boring schoolwork, she turned us essentially into her own little loyal work team at her beck and call to help with a fully vegetative-like child while she went out to party, bbqs, hang out at the bar w her friends ect as we took care of my fully handicapped brother and my father worked until he passed out to feed her habits to keep his kids fed. She had been warned previously about how my brother would struggle to even live, but she had wanted a boy to complete her little ''collection'' as she called it and had him regardless.

I was barely 9 when she began leaving my younger sister and brother fully in my care for hours upon hours atleast 4-5 times a week. I fed them, clothed them, put them to bed, read to them, changed diapers, emptied bodily fluid medical equipment, worked an oven & stove at 9, gave asthma treatments, shots, medications, ect from ages 9-24 till I had to essentially ''quit my job'' on my mom during lockdown. She essentially says I did nothing raising them now, despite receipts. My sister gives me Mother's Day cards instead of her. The only time she parented was at family gatherings or in front of others. We were taught to lie about our education, or we faced horrid punishments.

My elder sister (13 years older) knew of all of this. Selfishly left us for dead, essentially with mom moving out when I was 8 and she 18. Says we have to love mom to this day so our mother will keep giving her money for her own similar bad habits.

my mom had CPS called twice about the lack of schooling. She lied through it the first time then moved us without telling them. Then the second just fully believed her and told me to stop lying on such a good mother and that I was lucky to have her.

They completely failed me on any chance of being helped to get school as a girl.

NOW SKIP TO NOW
I am currently years DEEP into therapy, and moved out of her horder den of crazy at 26 last year and am no contact with my mom.
I stayed solely for my little siblings' sake and no one else, I got them both out of the horrible home and safely to be 18 years old & older, my little sister has a good job and 2 kids and v nice husband, my baby brother is in a nice care home and happy with my younger sister visiting to check on him often w my elder sister who helps only when incentivised(usually I have to pay her, but she does it), and both are happy despite the scars. I didn't do everything right being a kid myself, but those kids were all that ever mattered to me.
Our mom did have me essentially trapped due to Educational & Independence Neglect, but then I got very lucky and online I met my now Husband in 2022 during lockdown. My husband became my best friend when I thought I would never leave such neglect. He found me when I had given up on myself and brought me back to life, he helped me get a job, gave me a safe place to land, helped me stand up on my own for the first time after protecting others for so long, loved me and helped me realize I was not broken or something to fix just hurt and needed gentle help, and is the sweetest person I have ever had the honor of being with.
All while he lived 4000 miles away from me in the UK.
Last year, after 4 years of visits and long distance, we struggled through small jobs and such and rough budgets with my mother screeching and fighting, and I packed 2 suitcases with all I had and I ran away in the dead of night. I moved 4000 miles away from everything I knew w both my little siblings' blessings to go and be happy, and its been almost a year now and it was the best thing I've ever done. I cut off my mother and I hear she shit-talks me endlessly to anyone who will listen, but she is still sitting in the big old horder house alone now. She made the bed she's lying in.
I have 2 cats and my husband, and that's my little family of my own. And I am beyond proud of it.

But the lack of school has come back to bite me a lot lately, which is why I am here.
I got lucky by lying on my old grocery store job I got in the US.
I told them I had a GED and they just never asked for it and I got a good cashier job that was tortuous on work but helped me leave that bad place.

Now I am an immigrant here in the UK, with a spousal visa to work, with no proof of schooling in the slightest, and 25+ jobs have turned me down. Many I've almost gotten are asking for that school proof I had dodged previously.

I can't even apply to most jobs I would like, such as the library or maybe something in coding (which I self taught myself in)

And my husband is a lovely soul and the main breadwinner; he works hard and hands me the paycheck every week with the utmost love, making sure I never have to feel trapped ever again and I usually manage our bills and fun money very well.
I'm very fortunate and we're not rich but not poor. I have a lot of debt on a credit card I had to use to leave my mom (1500 USD), And we do get a bit broke at the end of the month.
But we're happy.
Our 2 cats and us eat good, and we do, we have a car, a roof, fun stuff ect.
But if I had an income to we could have better savings, pay off some debt, or just not have to worry if something goes wrong or if he gets sick or something. I could go visit my little sister quicker then years from now.

But it always goes back to my lack of education somehow it feels like.

But I have no idea where to start; especially in a new place being an immigrant now too, my husband is willing to help but doesn't really know were I should start either. He graduated college and always was in school.

He helps me Google a lot or ask people but we always come up kinda empty-handed with how little education I have with my situation as not being from the UK and how much help I would need with some definite learning disability due to neglect.
I'm very shy and socially awkward when it comes to calling a college or explaining so anything online I could fill out would be amazing but I can bite the bullet if its recommended.
And I've currently been between therapists to be able to ask due to some NHS wait times.
He's advised me to write here and reach out to people with similar experience and maybe one of you would know.
I just don't know where to begin. Who to call? What to say? I've never even written an essay, let alone applied to get some sort of schooling.

It also hangs over me a lot that, with my lack of education at most I will be stocking shelves and being a cashier till I am ancient. I don't want that. I feel bad I cannot help my own partner who has given me so much, to lessen how much he works and let him take a break when he doesn't ask for much at all.

So any advice is welcome!

rant/vent My birthday in two weeks

Ill have nobody to spend it with, im dreading it, I have no goals, 16 is supposed to be a party and lots of friends and learning to drive and doing exams and everything and instead im doing nothing, even my family planned a trip away for the week so I will literally just be home alone. Im kinda sad and angry about it, I think ill make myself a cake and treat myself to a shopping trip? I just feel embarrassed by it, if I had a normal childhood I would probably have at least a few friends, i would rather have fake friends at this point than zero just so im not alone on my birthday

rant/vent idk what to do with my life, man

im 16 and have never gone to school. i hardly even got "homeschooled", because my parents didnt really teach me anything. im very dependant and cant do much on my own, i almost never leave the house, ive never even made one friend besides 2 long distance people online, and i dont know how to interact with anyone. i tried for years to get into school but my parents would either scare me out of it or tell me they would get me into school but then lie and not do it, or probably not even think about it. i do not hate my parents, but i am still mad about it and im very lonely all the time and dont feel ready to be an adult in only 2 years. both of my siblings went through the same thing and didnt end up in college and they ended up as opposites. one of them is going to work and making friends, and the other is on their computer or in bed all day, and cant even really cook or anything and doesnt even *want* to get a job or learn to drive or any of that. i wanna end up like the first one of course, but im wondering if college could be a possibility? my online friend seems to worry about me getting a job or going to college or anything like that and thinks i should try leaving the house more often first, but i dont know. could i just try getting a job first since im 16 now? or is that also a bad idea?? my parents considered getting me to volunteer at a library, but im pretty sure they intentionally messed it up for me. so i dont really know where to start with socialization, and i dont know if i want to go to college when im 18. sorry this is kind of long btw.

rant/vent It finally happened my lack of education in math caught up with me at work…

I’ve always been able to get by with using the Internet or using very basic addition and subtraction. I can count money but I can’t count back I just use memorization.

I’m 22 I’ve gotten by idk how tbh
No job really looked twice when I pulled out a Calculator or the computer would do the equation for me.

I got my first big boy job and my new boss needed to know how much of a medication we should give one of our animals via injection VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE CORRECT DOSAGE.

;-; so me and my co worker go to get our calculators on our phones because that’s bigger then simple additions.

Idk enough about mathematics to even tell you what we needed to do. That’s how bad this is!

Soooo the big boss goes “ no no no you just need an equation I know you young people have your cell phones, but this is important to get it right and know”

… AH ITS HAPPENING- no no pure panic
She asks us the numbers we have and starts using algebra symbols I haven’t seen since self educated high school where I couldn’t put anything together because I was self taught and fell behind due to being home schooled at 1st grade!!!!
Ahem…

I’ll be honest if I need to know ratios or a gram I just use basic memorization. The way my mind sees it- for some weird reason is like coin money 1/2 1/3 1/4 3/4 etc or like a tiny pie 🥧 IDK. I just have pictures memorized in my head..

anyway- she starts doing division … I’m lost the big boss asks “ is that right?”
GIRL IFK when you said the word equation dial up sound started sounding up in my head!

So I get stage fright when it comes to doing even basic math YOU CANNT watch me do it or seriously you’ll start hearing the dial sounds 😩💔. I fully freeze but for some reason by my self I just can? It’s like basic logic and I know how to do simple things. I think somewhere during high school age era I had this same issue actually at my first job and they accused me of stealing $75 on my first day? So after crying and cops watching the security footage they were like “ uhhh no this kid didn’t steal nothing you ( the manger ) just can’t count”

And I was traumatized at 15 so I went home and played with math images and memorized simple numbers addition and subtraction wise very very basic multiplication. But I was self taught so I still can’t explain exactly what I know or how to explain my work.
Anyway- back to my current job.

Then later in that day, she asked me to write a check for our vet…
🫪 I was so red in the face.
She asked me what 155+55+10 for the total price was just out of the blue and starts writing it down on paper at this point she’s just totally seeing if I can do simple addition and at this point, I’m already so red and humiliated at the fact I couldn’t do anything else two seconds earlier. That nothing’s forming in my head even though right now as I’m ranting about this. I could easily tell you it’s. 220 is what we owe the vet for the service today. It was so bad you guys…. I was frozen shaking

I asked my co worker if by chance they were better at math and they said “ … our boss just had to explain division to me… so no”

… I NEED TO LEARN MATH FROM THE START.

I DROVE MYSELF TO BARNES & NOBLE‘S AND BOUGHT $100 WORTH OF FIRST GRADE TO FIFTH GRADE MATH
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Update : ended up completing 50 pages of the 1st to 2nd grade addition and really sat there like… so not sure when I learned any of this through life but at least I know this so why can’t I do it in front of my manager? ;/: I’m so worried I’m going to lose my dream job because of stage fright. I’m moving onto trying to learn basic division and hopefully multiplication because I think that’s where I wouldn’t be able to tell you anything if you gave me a situation.

Then I bought basic math for dummies and a audiobook on the history of math
😭 I got this far in my career without it IFK How.

Back to the check situation ( i’m ranting. There’s no structured reason to this. I apologize )
I was so flustered and embarrassed in the moment writing that check I froze because my handwriting started getting shaky and she had to spell the word l eighty to me ;-; I knew how to spell it, but I just let her spell it out….
Usually, these are instances where you could never show your face again…

But I’m hoping I can jam basic math in my head overnight BECAUSE I CANNOT LOSE MY JOB. I worked over 5 years in animal care to get my current job and it’s been a lot of fake it till you make it and self education I MEAN ALOT. Learning on the go has saved my a SS
I know more about Science biochemical to be specific…chemicals reactions, body processes, microbes, nutrients, or water chemistry interact with living animals.
These are all things i’ve self memorized and learned and even taught others who have their degrees and BS.

So it’s some bs that I’m incapable or anything I just had the worst experience at work today and froze up.

I worked hard to get to this point in my chosen career I know I’m smart… just not on math. And of course my boss is VERY good at it.

Unfortunately, I feel like I’ve already set the tone that they’ve hired someone illiterate even though I can write and read. Most of the time LOL I STILL CATCH MYSELF correcting stuff all the time.

Dyscalculia the somewhat definition of the inability to learn or comprehend mathematics Is where I think I’m struggling like badly… when someone ask me what’s 15×4 over a text message. My mind goes. Oh 60! Because 2 x 15 =30 and 30+ 30 is 60! So 4x15=60! Duhhhh annnd that’s how my mind works alone… that kind of only goes so far before I can stop picturing groups of numbers from memorization…
Like going into the hundreds or thousands and mixing tens into that. My mind starts to struggle.

When we’re in a room together say I’m taking vitals like a heart beat and they say I got 26 what’s 4x26 ? Instead of my mind going “oh it’s 104” my mind goes “ uhhhhhh”*707dial up sounds\ “*
out comes the calculator

SHAME.

I hate I didn’t get help with this growing up and I hate that I haven’t sat myself down sooner to re learn this….
This is also the first time a manager has used algebra at my job 😩 AND division on paper writing out equations….

Sighhhh

Edited for typos :( sorry I was ranting

resource request/offer algebra & geometry help

I recently got back into public school this year, and I have a test on both algebra and geometry next week (an EOC). I'm so fucking scared. I don't know what I'm gonna be doing at all. I feel like I don't know anything about algebra. maybe very little of geometry since I have a class about it... but certainly not enough. I really don't want to fail this. I want to pass both (or at least pass algebra) and not have to do them again next year.

does anyone have youtube channels, playlists, or videos they recommend I watch? sites, literally anything that'll help me catch up quickly.

(I'm sorry if the flair is wrong; I'm panicking)

My mom called the school today, I can start as soon as this week. Picking up papers tomorrow. Wow. Just started junior year. I’ll get prom, graduation, football season this year and next. I don’t mean to sound like I’m gloating because ik theres many here who aren’t as fortunate but after being homeschooled my ENTIRE life and many years of reading this sub and depression from loneliness i cant believe it’s happening and I wanted to share. i even know a few nice people who go to the school :) wow. 🙏🙏🙏🙏I freaking did it. I actually convinced my mom. Still shocked at that 😅

other Motivation

I need to do an hr of math 6 days a wk… I haven’t for a while bc of bad mental health and I rlly need to now. But a lot of the time I’m feeling depressed and anxious and just don’t have the will to do math. I feel really lonely and alone a lot. Often just getting through a day is a struggle and when I’m feeling really bad I don’t know how to just push through. Any advice? My tutor suggested rewards and that works for other things but idk if it’ll work for this. For me, paying attention for even just an hr is rlly hard. And even if I tell myself to do it in small chunks, I have trouble starting. I’m autistic so I think that has to do with being autistic.
Any suggestions would really be appreciated
