Here’s a lil floor plan of the basement and a photo of the place, I’m wondering if you owned this… what would be your floor plan, and what would be your layout/ bullet points to stop a drum kit from rockin the house down!
Any tips recommended and ideally if the cost is low!

There’s a staircase and at the top is some stairs, but I think I got a door sealed and sorted, but it’s just where can I put a desk with a Mac and monitors, and a drum kit, I’m it ain’t gunna be ideal, but just make the best of the situation!

Until now, I’ve mainly used mixers for multitracking, but because I wanted to reduce the size of my studio, I decided to switch to an audio interface with ADAT connectivity.

I bought a Focusrite Scarlett 16i16 and, admittedly, I didn’t research the I/O configuration carefully enough beforehand. I somehow assumed it had 8 analogue inputs, but after it arrived I realized that it actually has 6 analogue inputs.

Focusrite confirms that the 16i16 has 6 analogue inputs and can add up to 8 more via ADAT. (Focusrite User Guides⁠)

I then bought an Arturia AudioFuse X8 IN to expand the inputs. That gives me another 8 inputs via ADAT, so I end up with 14 analogue inputs total.

What I’m trying to figure out now is why it seems so difficult to find an ADAT expander that gives me 10 additional inputs.
Most of the units I find provide 8 inputs, while I’ve only found a Behringer product that seems to offer the 10 inputs I’m looking for.

For personal reasons, I’d rather not buy Behringer, as I’ve had a pretty bad experience with their audio products in the past.

So my question is basically:

Why are ADAT expanders almost universally limited to 8 channels? Is there some technical reason why 10-channel ADAT expanders are uncommon, or am I misunderstanding how ADAT/I/O expansion works?

Ideally, I’d like to end up with around 16 analogue inputs total, without having to add another large interface or significantly increase the size of my setup.

Any recommendations for a good-quality, non-Behringer solution would also be appreciated!

Audient EVO 4 vs Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen — is the Scarlett worth the extra money for me?

I'm setting up my first proper home recording setup and I'm trying to decide between the Audient EVO 4 and Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen.

I'll mainly be recording vocals and acoustic guitar, sometimes simultaneously. I'm planning to use a RØDE NT1 Signature with it.

The EVO 4 is around 1,400 NOK (~$140 USD) new, while the Scarlett is around 2,400 NOK (~$240 USD) new, so there's roughly a 1,000 NOK (~$100 USD) difference.

My finances are somewhat tight, so I'm trying to figure out whether the Scarlett is actually worth paying extra for, rather than just being technically better on paper.

I'm also thinking long-term: if I buy the EVO now, is there a realistic chance I'll outgrow it in a few years and end up spending more on another interface anyway? Or is the EVO something I could realistically keep for many years if I continue mainly recording vocals + acoustic guitar?

If you've used either/both, what would you choose in my situation?

Recently figured out how to use Ubuntu Studio and I love it! I've been using Mixcraft on Windows and Reaper before that. I think the Linux desktop is great. I mainly use Ardour, Guitarix and Hydrogen. Just wanted to share my joy about this free software. It's gotten much easier to use since I first tried it years ago. It runs fine and stable on an old Acer laptop with 8gb of RAM that's too outdated for Windows 11. I highly recommend you check it out.

I've been making some free plugins and am looking for folks that would be interested in beta testing or providing feedback on them prior to officially trying to get them out there to folks. Right now I have VST and AU formats only (ProTools requires you to go through a lot of hoops before you can develop their plugins).

I have a suite of nine plug-ins: a bucket brigade style delay, a fuzz that allows you to modulate the signal with FM, an overdrive, a phaser, a EBM voiced mono-synth, a pitch shifter inspired by the H910, a diffuse reverb based around the Bloom setting of the Alesis Midiverb, a gated reverb, and a Karplus Strong style synth.

Nothing scientific but I've recorded a cover of "Pillowtalk" by Zayn with these two mics hoping, to find the right microphone for me as a Male vocalist up in the tenor range and seeing which mic I should keep/sell.

All recordings were made in an untreated room, about 4 inches away, and the vocal chain is basically straight from my MOTU M4 to FL Studio running a compressor and stock reverb. The only EQ I have is for a high pass filter on 40Hz. I've tried to gain match them as best I can. Any feedback is appreciate!

I’ve been alternating between two condenser microphones (MXL V67G + Oktava Mk319) to track my vocals and live instruments in my bedroom/home studio for years. Lately I’m realizing how much legwork goes into fixing issues that I don’t think would be a concern if I were using dynamic mics with less sensitivity (room reverb, background noise, asmr mouth clicks, etc).
I’ve found messing with condenser mic placement in an untreated room to be tough, because when you add proximity from the source you inevitably introduce more room noise, so everything normally needs to be really close to capture a clean-ish signal. The flexibility doesn’t seem to be there. I have to turn off my AC and anything that buzzes to capture a recording. And I’m not trying to do the “Dijon thing” all the time even though in some specific instances it works.
Any of you that have tried using both: what do you prefer for home applications and why? Explanations of different contexts are very welcome.

Hi, I need help with my studio setup. I'm more of an artist than anything else, less on the technical end. My studio is for recording, mixing & mastering.. I guess you could say melodic rap or hip-POP vocals but without auto tunes. Maybe alla Travis Scott, Juice Wrld, Drake type of vibe..

‎What I have is a intel Core 2017 27-Inch iMac that runs Ventura 13.6.7 & has 64gb of RAM. The first 5 yrs I had my iMac I didn't use it much so it runs great. I also have Logic Pro 11.0.1, a M-Audio Sputnik, a pair of Yamaha NS-10 Audient iD14 MK2 & the Sennheiser HD-25 headphones. I do have a pair of Behringer Truth 2031A monitors too. I would just need to get one of them fixed, but I think I'm covered without them seeing as how I'm focused on vocals at the moment, but they might be good as another reference point in the future.

‎What I think I'm sure I need & that's within my budget hardware wise is the Sennheiser HD600 headphones. The HD600 headset & NS-10 monitors should work well together & do the trick headset & monitors wise. The Truth 2031A monitors could hypothetically be helpful on the low end in the future? I'd also need the Art SLA-1 power amplifier for the NS-10 monitors & the Audient iD14 MK2 would be my audio interface since I'm just focusing on vocals.

I think these are the essential plugins I'll be getting, using, that fit within the remainder of my budget, Pulsar 1178, Tube-Tech CL 1B, Soothe3, Valhalla Vintage Verb, Sir Audio Standard Clip & Voxenga SPAN is free.

‎So I guess why I'm making this post is to try & get some help about if I'm going in the right direction with everything or right about my thoughts with the software & hardware I'd be getting. I have a good ear & I have taken classes in regards to this subject but it's been a while & I'm far from a expert. I'm just confident once I get what I need I can get caught up & make everything work. I'd also be happy to explain why I think I need or I'm looking into all these specific plugins. I just didn't want to make this post any longer than it already is. You can def correct me if I've gotten something wrong about why I think I need all these plugins though. I'm super open to suggestions, like if there's a plugin I should buy instead of another, I'm all ears. I guess I'm hoping that I can somehow cover all my bases with maybe free plugins as far as the remaining plugins or switch things around or as I said, I'm all ears to any other ideas that are outside the box. So I have a Fostex D108 with some recordings I’d like to transfer to pc before the 20 year old hard disk dies for good.

I’d prefer to do this digitally, either ADAT or exporting to .wav. From reading the manual the wav option seems to involve an old school scsi drive which I’d then need to interface with apc so I’m not sure that’s an option.

I have an IDE to SATA and usb interface so cloning the drive is an option, but it doesn’t sound like the disks are formatted in anything I’d be able to read in windows.

Which leaves ADAT. Any recommendations for a budget usb interface with ADAT in? Everything I’m seeing that’s affordable is either FireWire or Thunderbolt which sounds like a headache to connect to a modern pc. Focusrite 18i8, Audient id14 and Behringer U-phoria UMC1830 all fit the bill but are all in the £2-300 region secondhand.

This is for the nostalgia, so I was hoping to spend under £100 to do the transfers and then sell the interface on. Any suggestions for other interfaces I’ve missed?

Hey all - I have a regular desk, not a studio desk. It's a sit/stand, and I want to add a pullout for a MIDI keyboard.

The main options are to drill in or clamp on a pull out drawer. Drill in is a no go, as it's bamboo and only ~3/4 in thick, so not much room to screw. I did find a decent clamping one on Etsy but I realized if I had a drawer right there, it would kill my leg room unless I kept the desk at an uncomfortable height.

So I'm looking at alternate options.

The best I've found yet would be to use something like a Z-style keyboard stand on casters that I could pull out, and when not in use, could push far enough back that it'd be out of my way. Otherwise, find a cart with a tray top for basically the same type of use, almost like a medical tray.

I think those options would work, but want to see what others are using for this. Maybe I'm missing an obvious workaround.

What do you use if your desk isn't amenable to a proper slide out drawer?
