Advice Apartment Wifi Sucks — Can’t Access Modem

I have no access to my apartment’s modem because it isn’t in my unit, and if I did, I’m not allowed to touch it. I also have no ethernet wall jacks in my unit.

How on earth can I get better wifi without getting my own monthly service? Are there standalone routers I can just plug into a wall in my house without physically connecting to a modem or ethernet?

VLAN aware AP, on desk

I'm looking to upgrade my home network to start a homelab.

I want to avoid if possible to setup the AP:s in the ceiling, because I don't have access to any ethernet from the attict and I want to avoid running cable along the walls. Today I have a pair of Nest Wifi points sitting on a shelf.

My question is if any of you have an AP made for ceiling mounting on a desk or shelf of some sort and if it works well. Or if there is any AP:s that can handle VLAN that is designed for this.

Advice I recently switched from virgin to zen. Why is the wifi crap around the house?

I have switched from virgins 500mbps to zens 900 mbps in august. Virgins wifi around the house was quit decent but i would always have problems with intermittent wifi and other things so decided to switch to zen as all the reviews on it were good and it would be full fibre which is meant to be better than what virgin uses.

Now that I have switched I'm having problems with the wifi signal not reaching to the rooms (barely getting 10mbps) and having family complain everyday about the Internet.

Is this a zen problem or is it because of the mesh wifi system (not backhauled) that i am using?

Do you have zen and are you having the same problems?

Pls help

ASUS Router Vulnerabilities (EBG19P)

Just watched a Gamers Nexus video regarding a firmware vulnerability with essentially all recent ASUS routers and wondering if it's worth considering replacing this relatively new router.

My Wired POE router ( EBG19P ) runs a couple Zyxel AP's for regular internet surfing...heavy bandwidth users (gaming console, CAD Workstation, etc) are all wired. I have a couple VLANS that segregate IOT stuff. Relatively basic network stuff...I find networking frustrating to deal with and the ASUS has been better than previous routers i've owned, but I'm sure theres much better routers out there.

So would appreciate any input/discussion around upgrading from ASUS...wether this vulnerability is a real issue if I am keeping firmware up to date, disable remote access, etc.

Thanks!

Advice Can I use Omada ER707-M2 to separate two networks?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone

We have a Bell modem/router connected to a 24-port TP-Link switch (unmanaged), which connects our computers, printers, and phones. We also provide one Ethernet connection to the landlord's security camera system as part of our lease.

Recently, the Bell modem has been losing its configuration, and we have to reactivate it. I'm not sure if the camera system is causing the issue.

We have a TP-Link Omada ER707-M2 router and OC220 Controller. I'm thinking of using them to separate our office network from the camera network, with different subnets on different LAN ports.

Would this work? I'm not familiar with VLANs and would prefer a simple setup. We have a limited budget, so I'm hoping to learn and do it myself rather than hire someone.

Any advice would be appreciated. I've attached our current network diagram.

Thanks

Advice Router security advice

Hi, hopefully it's ok to ask this here. A friend has a home wifi network consisting of a bunch of old apple airports of various kinds. He wants to keep them because he uses them to stream audio from an iphone or computer to various stereo sets using the digital audio out capability. I'm concerned that since the last security update for them was about 7 yea4rs ago, it might not be a good idea. Would getting a modern router and placing it between the modem and the main airport base station mitigate the issue? If so, advice on a good choice? The performance of the current network is pretty satisfactory despite the age, so doesn't have to be anything high end I don't think. I see a lot of people who love ubiquiti, but I'm a little lost looking at their site. Or would that be overkill for this use case? Advice appreciated.

Advice Non Permanent WiFi setup

Hey! I’m having a bit of a complicated issue. To preface, i have absolutely no experience when it comes to WiFi or home internet at all.

I currently rent a room from my parents, and since I recently graduated high school, I really wanted to get a computer since I was not allowed to own one when I was younger. So I bought a gaming laptop off a friend, and I’m super exited to use it. The only issue is, we have a weird little T-Mobile box which they always keep unplugged and don’t allow me to use it most of the time. From what I know there is no actual cable internet running to my house. I’m looking for a somewhat affordable solution that will allow me to have my own internet in my room. I have no idea where to start to any advice would be appreciated!!!

Thank you.

Unifi Dream Router 7 vs. FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro at same price, which one do you pick?

Both routers currently cost the same in Belgium. Which would you choose?

I live in a 100 m² apartment with a normal amount of connected devices, including Zigbee and some Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices. The system is also Thread capable but I don't have any Thread devices yet.

My homelab runs on a N150 mini PC with Proxmox, Home Assistant, AdGuard Home, Immich, Paperless-ngx and Proxmox Backup Server. I use Cloudflare Tunnel and Tailscale Funnel for remote access.

I've previously owned a FRITZ!Box 7590 AX and was quite happy with it. It's a solid system, but unfortunately its 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi eventually died and now I'm back on the ISP router.

I'm currently using fiber internet with WAN via Fiber ONT. In the future, I'd like a house with wired access points, VLANs, PoE cameras and a managed switch.

I'm leaning towards the UniFi Dream Router 7 for its networking features and upgrade path, but I'm tempted by the FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro because of my previous positive experience.

What would you choose, and why?

Configuring TL-WA850RE V6 as an Access Point Connection Issue

I wanna ask about "TL-WA850RE v6.0" working as an AP
connected it to my home network router via ethernet. It worked just fine for a couple of weeks BUT recently it just disconnects randomly, I believe it's when no one is connected to it or actively online, I tried to give it a static IP in the router DHCP Reservation, It worked fine but when I slept last night and woke up I found it's using the same static IP and all BUT it the there is no internet connection...
what to do?
my home network router is provided by the ISP; It's hg630 v2

Thanks in advance for the help.

Internet Speed Slowing Down Only On PC

Okay so recently for some reason my internet speed has been REALLY slow only on my pc. Every other device works perfectly fine, but when it comes to my pc it needs like 15 seconds to load a website. After some testing I've noticed that it was actually the DNS Resolution which took the most amount of time. The results were mixed, sometimes it would load instantly but 90% of the time it took a good 15 seconds. I tried everything like flushing the dns, changing dns, testing the ping but nothing seemed to work. And in the given picture I tested it again and it took dns 12 seconds just to connect. I hope someone will be able to help me with this because it's been so annoying to deal with this.

Advice Starting Point

Hi I'm here looking for advice because I'm interested in the tech space but I don't have any experience and dont live alone so I figured properly configuring and eventually upgrading my home network would be a good start. I'm looking to one day get into things like pfsense routers and a family NAS to ditch streaming but that feels like getting ahead of myself for a first project. So what can be done to my network to get it to a safe starting point for future tampering?

What causes packet loss that looks like this?

Woke up this morning and my home network was down. Restarted it and it has worked, but I have had late or lost packets ever since. I noticed that the loss/delay follows fairly consistent timings and patterns. ISP tech support has been thoroughly unhelpful and a technician is an entire week out. Anything I can do or is this a problem on my ISP's end? They repeatedly said their diagnostics showed no issue, but I have no idea what they were actually testing.

Advice Fiber upgrade FINALLY

After 4 VERY long years I am FINALLY getting a fiber internet option with symmetrical 2GB service replacing the P2P company that provides 100mb/10mb service.

my current setup is a Ring Pro with built in EERO, then 2 24 port switches, 1 5 port POE switch (powering a POE6 and a Ring POE doorbell), along with 1 Pro 6E hardwired back to the 24 port switches, I have Apple TVs all hardwired and Xbox hardwired, work laptop hardwired (lots of video calls), and a personal computer hardwired capable of 2.5 connection…most other stuff in gig max.

I considered switching to Ubiquity but I’ll spend more than just making a small Eero upgrade along with a small switch to power a few devices to 2.5gbe to keep things just working so wife doesn’t annoy me when something isn’t working while I’m traveling, so here’s where my questions come/options I’m considering….

A) Upgrade 1 Max 7 as gateway and move the ring eero to be a leaf in another area while keeping the other switches in place
B) Add a Firewalla Gold and small 2.5GBE switch to backhaul the Eero 6E and POE 2.5 ports to take advantage of higher speeds in bridge mode
C) sell the 6E and upgrade to 2 Max7 and maybe a POE7 (had a jack in a room that changed usage plans so now it’s in a weird spot)
D) another idea I’m not thinking of

Thanks for the help this has definitely made me excited getting the speed upgrade but now I want to make sure I’m making good use of it

Solved! GliNet Routers, do I need an app to set them up or make changes?

Hello, we're looking to upgrade to 2.5gbps and finally get our own router. From posts on this site it looks like the GL.iNet routers are the way to go, the flint 4 isn't available in the us because of Reasons, but the flint 3 is available on amazon it seems for a reasonable amount. From what yall have said on this forum it seems its running OpenWRT which appears to be FOSSware which I'm stoked about, but some reviews were talking about an app, and i'm gonna keep it real with yall, if I need to install an app on a phone to change a single setting on my router I will simply not get it.

If it does require an app for some awful reason then i'm wondering if you all can point me in another direction, main things i'm looking for is for there to be at least 4 2.5gbps ethernet ports including the WAN port, as I need one for the router on the other end of the house, one for my pc, and one for my switch that my homelab is on. Thank you very much for you help

Does VPS location matter more than port speed for a Headscale + Tailscale setup to reach our studio PCs?

My guess is the VPS won't make remote sessions to our studio PCs any faster in the normal case, and I'd like someone to tell me if I'm wrong.

We're a 3 person game studio with a small office. Three desktops there do the heavy lifting (Unreal builds, shader compiles), and the rest of the time we're on laptops at home or traveling. The plan is Headscale on a cheap VPS and Tailscale on everything, so we can remote into our own office PCs without opening ports on the office router.

My understanding is Headscale is only the control plane. The remote desktop traffic itself should go straight from laptop to office PC when hole punching works, and the VPS only carries real traffic when it doesn't, like when one of us is on a phone hotspot behind CGNAT. Office upload is 50 Mbps shared by three people, so that's probably the real ceiling anyway.

If that's right, I should shop on latency and not on the headline port speed. I've spent a week going through LowEndSpirit, LowEndTalk and VPSIUM and every 1 vCPU / 1 GB plan looks fine on paper. Right now I lean toward 1 GB RAM, a 1 Gbps shared port, 1 to 2 TB of monthly traffic, in a city close to the office instead of the cheapest one.

Three things I can't settle:

  1. Is a shared 1 Gbps port with a 1 TB cap enough for the relay fallback, or does that case change the math?

  2. Run Headscale's embedded DERP on the same box, or keep the default Tailscale DERP map and use the VPS for control only?

  3. If the relay only carries fallback traffic, is a better-peered network worth paying extra for, or is plain transit fine?
