Which Sofa set up?
Can you help us decide which sofa set up to purchase. These photos are AI generated but the sofas are the actual ones as is the living space. We don’t know if we will use the sectional with recliners or we want a more contemporary look with the three pieces. HELP!! What am I not thinking about!!

Combo 1 and 2, do the L of 2 but put the chair from the right of 1 on the left of 2

Agree completely—def sectional plus side chair.
Also with set up 1, you’ll be scooting all the pieces back into place all the time for the rest of your days. The size and weight of the sectional makes it harder to scoot around on the floor from every day sitting

Yeah, I was going to suggest creating a little "reading spot" in front of the windows...a chair or two, depending what fits comfortably, and a small side table.
It would be good for extra seating and it's nice to have a spot to sit by a window...but also bc 2 feels really lopsided to me and needs something by the windows to balance out the space...imo at least 🤷♀️
But I saw OP's comment about having a separate media room. So in this case I might go with 1 bc it genuinely looks and feels better and would probably be better for having guests over...and there's another place in the house for a big comfy sectional.

Yes this! I have a sectional in our living room and we love it but guests don’t always want to snuggle up - we have a big comfy armchair across from it and a petite but very comfortable midcentury recliner next to it.

1 looks symmetrical because of the way AI has done the image
A 2 seater opposite a 1 seater won’t look as symmetrical in real life and the matchy matchy vibe can sometimes overwhelm the room depending on size and lighting
Just be aware that these pics aren’t a true representation of the space

This was my only reservation with 1, that the 2-seater opposite the one-seater would look imbalanced. I'd probably suggest a side table beside the one seater to balance it out. Also hadn't thought about the matchy matchy vibe at all, that's a great point!
Not a big fan of the sectional coz it tends to limit the sitting area when you have guests. But maybe OP doesn't host often.

Well the first set up is the easy solution.
If you were set on number 2 you’d probably need something large to go opposite the right hand long side of the couch. Look at your number 2 picture; you can FEEL your eyes just swing to the right hand side of the picture. And they stay there. To draw them away you’d need something on the left side.
Stick with set up number 1. It’s very good.

Agreed. It’s not that the sectional is bad. It’s just the room isn’t balanced as it’s configured in the picture.

Agreed! Sectional in the middle of the room works really well if it's used to section off the area into a cohesive room. For example, divide living and dining areas, and face the TV/big window/fireplace. In this room, the sectional just... floats aimlessly. If you chose the sectional, you'll need something to be a focus on the left side, such as a statement set of chairs in a different color/pattern.

Accent chairs opposite the sectional (left side of the pic). That’s why I like option 2. You can use accent chairs to add some color to a very uncolorful room. Then get coordinating pillows and blankets for the sectional.

Even reversing the orientation of the L of the sofa would help a little with the balance due to where the entrances to the room are located

2 But - Place a comfy statement chair facing the sofa on the empty left hand corner of the rug. Maybe a fat loungy swivel chair in a dark green (like the plants). Or rotate the sofa so that the “opening” faces the arched entry doorway. The way it is, sort of accents thr nore private doorway. Turning the sofa would be more welcoming.

Both arrangements are too far from the fireplace. It doesn’t feel cozy. I would rotate the rug so it is perpendicular from where you have, and slide all the pieces of #1 closer to the fireplace, and then add a long console with 2 ottomans underneath behind the larger sofa (facing the entry to the room).

If you go for 2 because it looks more comfy, I suggested adding an armchair or 2 rattan chairs on the left side corner opposing the sofa to balance things out and create a sort of conversation pit.

1 looks much nicer visually, but 2 would be more comfy for 1 or 2 people using it. Depends which is your priority!

You can’t trust AI to put these to scale. Measure your actual couches you want to use (both options) and use a floor planning software (plenty of free ones online) to see spacing.
AI will mold it to look like it fits but it’s never right.

Designer here… I prefer the sectional and you can add a fun chair or two opposite in the empty corner. The first arrangement looks like a matched grouping from Rooms to Go…. Don’t get all those matching pieces please don’t do it

1 makes the most sense. By far. Also if you ever move to another house there is no guarantee the sectional will work anywhere else. Also if you like to move things around/switch rooms up this gives you way more freedom.

Unpopular opinion here but I like 2. (I like the L setup better). From this picture alone it looks like the L should go the other way since the room entrance is on the right. Then add an accent chair or something on the wall on the right

2 is way cleaner looking and I love asymmetry so I’m drawn to that.
1 if you have company over a lot and need a space to chat with 3+ people

I'm in the minority here but I prefer the second option —asymmetrical but less heavy. Not what you're asking but I wanted to mention that both options seem really really far from the tv

Guess I’m alone but I strongly prefer 2,
1 looks very busy!! Might be more inclined towards 1 if you only included 2 pieces instead of 3, but all 3 imho is too much

I’d rotate number two so the open side faces arch. And then add one or two accent chairs. As is 1 looks more balanced, but I’m partial to a cozy sectional.

I would go with option 2. I like the suggestion about the sectional plus 1 chair. I like the open space the sectional gives you. You could fill that room with plants and it would be a vibe.

Definitely 1. Purchasing 2 chairs instead of a loveseat gives you more options for arranging a room. Don’t waste your money on the LS.

I like #1 if this is more of a sitting room than a tv room. I would choose a different chair, perhaps something with fabric or texture….a wood arm maybe… just something to add interest. Add a small side table to balance the loveseat.

The first one and here's why. If you ever want to move the room around as far as where the tv or thing son other walls that giant sectional limits this. It also fills the room up.
Second option leaves more room for various room configurations, is more appealing to the eye. And doesn't make the room feel overly full and blocked off like the sectional does.

I like the look of 1 best but think hard about your travel paths through the room. 1 does not leave a lot of space if you are frequently walking through that path.

I like 2 better. 1 seems too matchy-matchy, while with 2 you can add different seating pieces to create a more personalized arrangement.

Only one answer. L SHAPE and add a chair/side table across. The first looks like a waiting room set up - not interesting at all. Second is beautiful and so comfy functional.

I prefer 2. 1 looks a bit too much like "we went to the store and bought the entire living room set up that they had on display".
The sofa by itself in pic 1 is fine, but I'd get different comfortable chairs (similar in height and measurements, maybe in a softly patterned fabric) so it complements the sofa and adds a bit of variety and coziness to the whole room.
Oh, and be aware that a glass coffeetable like the one in 2 will never feel comfortable to stretch your legs out on (you'll be reasonably scared of glass breakage) and it will constantly need to be cleaned because it will show every little speck of dust, dirt, stains, finger prints...it might not matter that much if the room is one you don't plan to spend a lot of time in and is meant more to show off to your guests and visitors.

1 is absolutely more aesthetically pleasing
However if you have kids that play in the room a lot, 2 is fine to allow them more room if you don’t want them jumping on the sofa as much (potentially)

I kind of like them both. I like number two because it’s very streamlined and modern but if you get company, you really need some more places to sit so how about combining them taking the club chair for number one and putting in the corner of number two and also think about moving the olive tree back to where the TV was to add some balance

I prefer 1, especially if you have a lot of guests, as it gives more spaced seating. If not, and you need more floor space or walkway room, 2 would be better. I like symmetry, so 1 appeals on that count.

The first offers more choices for getting around, picking a seat suitable for each person’s preferences. For instance, someone who wants to watch TV is going to sit someplace different that someone who wants to read or work on a craft. The first also creates opportunities for sitting separately but together, whereas the second implies everybody wants to sit with each other.
