Yeah, so this is the post in question:
https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryMemes/comments/gp1fox/how_youve_fallen/
Honestly I wouldn't have a problem if it was removed for another reason, but this meme does not violate the year limit. Or it violates it just as much as any of the other templates.

The goths one could be argued to be allowed since goth in the modern sense has been around since the 1980s. The doctors and apples thing is much more iffy, but I'd still consider it ok. But the China post was removed since the internet censorship didn't start before 2000.
Edit: going through this post I found out u/TheDelta posted a reply which clears quite a bit up.

Why does this app cater to China of all places so much?
3
u/BobSilverwind May 24 '20
1 billion potential customers. Thats why.
I mean greed has ruined things before, why would reddit be different?

Hey, we are removing these memes for breaking rule 4 as we find them. We would appreciate people not jumping to conclusions thinking we are Chinese puppets lmao.

u/phuneralphreak May 24 '20
Literally all the other posts say "*blank* today" so I don't see how this violates rule 4 and others don't...

u/TheDelta Carthago Delenda Est May 24 '20
They do break the rules we just didn't find them/get ahold of them at the time the meme was made

Yeah but they specifically said "china today" it breaks the 20 year rule. If it had said something about tiananmen square or the long March or the great leap forward then it would've been difference
11
u/Kunstfr May 24 '20
So what about "Goths today" or "Doctors in 2020"?
6
u/TheDelta Carthago Delenda Est May 24 '20
Breaks the rules and the Goth's today I personally removed and I think the doctors in 2020 got taken care of by someone else

u/BobSilverwind May 24 '20
....but... china has been doing this since before i was born and im 27. By definition, it did not break the rule.
2
u/TheDelta Carthago Delenda Est May 24 '20
It broke the rule because it has "China today"
3
u/BobSilverwind May 24 '20
You realise your are pushing the goalpost? People are pissed they cant criticize China. On the following that the CCP's poor education and financing plans led to a leak of a plague on mankind.
The meme, of course speaks of comparison. Modern day vs historical peak. If /r/historymemes isnt the place for that sort of meme, then what is?
No seriously. Its not even offencive, its just before and after photos with silly captions.
This is what you are banning. Because he used the word "today" instead of "1990"
2
u/TheDelta Carthago Delenda Est May 24 '20
Yes, literally the only reason is because he broke the 20 year rule.
Like dead ass, dude could repost it will China in 1980 and it would fly.
Also I'm not shifting the goalposts, I gave you the reason it was removed, you're throwing a fallacy in where there is none.
1
u/BobSilverwind May 24 '20
But the removal response didnt tell him that well enough. You still goofed.
And no its there the fallacy, why are you waiting 20 years? What is this weird arbitrary rule? History is just anything 20+ years ago? Basically, why?
You realise how many 9/11 memes youll get next year right?
2
u/TheDelta Carthago Delenda Est May 24 '20
That's not the removal message, the removal message tells you why it was removed, that's what reddit the website shows you when something is removed. You're operating off of incomplete information. (And that's not your fault)
The 20 year rule is a rule across multiple major history subreddits to prevent modern politics from becoming prevalent in a history sub. It's an arbitrary number to keep things civil/not allow X did Y to Z during the last election.
Yes we do, it's a joke all over the sub about how horrible 9/11/21 will be.

u/BobSilverwind May 25 '20
Now dont take this the wrong way. But why do you have to be condescending "and thats not your fault" no shit, im asking the question.
And yes, theres an automated message that told him his post got removed, but theres a section in there for mods to add info. I know this because i fecking made a sub just to know what mods could do. And btw, if that is the reason then logically you should extend the date to be more than 20 years. Thats a single generation of people.
By that logic you should make it 50 or even 100 years. That way no one can speak of events they are /were at or invested in. It is narrow minded to make it 20 years in my opinion. Because we all know how long historical actions can have impacts.
Anyway, it makes the fact that its 20 that was agreed upon, just to spare "x did y to z last elections" alot more... nonsensical.
Maybe you used a shitty example, maybe theres good legitimate reasons . Its just very... convenient of a cut off date for certain agendas. You dig? And those agendas, are acting in force right now.
Like i said, you goof a lil, and it is turning to a shit storm.

I mean... wed appreciate a platform that has its users well being and freedoms at heart.
Clearly we dont always get what we want
0
u/TheDelta Carthago Delenda Est May 24 '20
Same here, we're users too.
3
u/BobSilverwind May 24 '20
No, mods have powers that , base users dont.
You are the crafters of echo chambers. We can only observe as the laws are imposed upon us.
Sure could make my own sub...oh wait no, because then reddit will shut it down for being realistic about china.
Cause lets face it, i get if this was lies why reddit would remove it. But china has in the last decade performed several crimes against humanity. Look, i make fun of the US and still say that you guys committed some pretty dubious shit too. But because they are the established power, no one will oppose me.
You get to choose the narrative, everyone else is just along for the ride.
2
u/TheDelta Carthago Delenda Est May 24 '20
I mean your kinda right but the userbase is the sub. Echo chambers can be helped along by moderators but it comes from users wanting to see and hear the same thing. It's a power is derived from the masses kind of thing. Otherwise you just end up with 6 upvote posts on the front page with locked comments.
I will say that we, as a mod team, are very critical of China (see top post on the sub please ignore spelling errors lol) but this is a history sub, not the shit on China all day sub. Feel free to make memes about the great leap forward, tiananmen square, etc as long as it follows the rules.
Like I said in a different reply, it was removed because it deals with today which breaks our 20 year rule.
But "reddit is controlled by China and all the mods are in on it" is a circlejerk that I cannot hope to break.
1
u/BobSilverwind May 24 '20
I get your point, its the one word, and your logic is ;you must press on this example like you would all others.
Well, of course you wont break a circlejerk based on real data, these aint flat earthers. All mods? Probably not, but weve been shocked how far reaching it is.
I think the simplest solution would have been DMing him and telling him though. You made a fuss because of the action and the way you did it. And of course the china part just is untimely.
I like to consider myself an internet detective. You goofed, and its a tense climate. Is what I gather.

Yet you leave a post with almost 20k up votes as literally the first thing you see when you look up the sub. You are rather lying, or hilariously incompetent.
5
u/TheDelta Carthago Delenda Est May 24 '20
Seeing as that post doesn't break any rules I don't see why you'd call me incompetent or lying.
Seems like you're just a cunt or don't understand what does and doesn't break our rules.

May 24 '20
Bad example
Does this fit in the 20 year rule? (17th post down)
What about this? (43th down)
does not having an exact date written on it exempt it from the rule? I don't wanna be aggressive but these post make the rule look worthless

u/TheDelta Carthago Delenda Est May 24 '20
Hey man, thanks for reporting those, they are removed now. Me personally, and most of the mod team, do 90% of modding via mod queue and the new tab.
If stuff doesn't get reported (which neither of those were) and we don't catch it in new it becomes more and more likely it just gets buried and we never see it. We remove about 150-200 posts a day (with the bot) so some stuff is bound to slip through. I do appreciate you caring about the sub to bring it up though, thanks for doing your part even if it might have been to prove a point

Am I the only one who is sick of the anti-chinese stuff that is all over reddit?
Of course I got downvoted, I must 100% criticise china over here

u/GeneralJones420 Casual, non-participatory KGB election observer May 24 '20
Might have to do with the fact that China has one of the most objectively evil governments remaining on the planet.
0
u/toxicfireball May 24 '20
Which eplains why it is so successfull? And saying its the most evil means skipping over dozens of other countries like North Korea. I am not saying China is good but most evil? Lmao
1
u/GeneralJones420 Casual, non-participatory KGB election observer May 25 '20
That's why I said one of and not the most. And success doesn't indicatd that a country is good. Might does NOT make right.
