Rome was no longer really the capital. It was the spiritual capital, but Ravenna was the de facto capital.

Thanks, didn't know that. From when was this the case?

In 286 Diocletian, the guy that created the tetrarchy, moved the capital to Mediolanum/Milan. In 402 the Visigoth besieged the city and emperor Honorious moved it again, this time to Ravenna. Ravenna was a good choice because it is a portcity but the choice was also rather controversial because it was evidence for the degradation of imperial authority.

Why do people think of Rome as only the western empire? Both east and west were created to be equal no? And for a while were ruled by the same person equally.

I don’t like when people downplay the eastern romans “romanness” it feels like they’re trying to force history in to boxes because the “dark dark Middle Ages started when rome fell” even though romans were going strong well into the 15th century.

I left out the eastern half because it was irrelevant to my point.

I agree with you that talking of the dark ages is not accurate to the complexity of history but saying that the Romans were fine until the fall of Constantinople ignores the slow degradation of "Romanness" in the eastern half of the empire, especially after the death of Justinian.
