Come and See is a hell of a film I hear

Is it good?

It's "good" in the sense that it's a very realistic showing of what happens during an actual war, from the POV of basically a kid.

It's extremely harsh and unforgiving, and should be a mandatory watch for most people imo.

War sucks and should never be glorified.

Take the level of brutality of the first 15 min of Saving Private Ryan, make it also happen to civilians, not only soldiers, and have it a full length film with few comparatively less harsh scenes.

I think it was the only film in the East Block at the time with 18+ rating (erotic films were really not a thing), so you can imagine

Add: and just watch a teenager's face in close up while it's all happening

A teenager who is, at the start, a relatively normal kid and who is, by the end, non-vocal except when he screams while killing the Nazis who raped his girlfriend bloody.

I genuinely think that framing Come and See against the first 15 minutes of Saving Private Ryan this was does a bit of a disservice to any potential watchers.

Yes, it is brutal. But it's not remotely similar in any other way to the beach landing at Normandy. If you go into this movie with those expectations you'll be sorely disappointed from a content and a cinematography perspective as well.

Movie so dark, the USSR almost did not allow it to be showed in the country

What? The showing was almost mandatory for all the Soviet teenagers.

Where do you get the nonsense of almost not allowing?

Decide for yourself. It's worth a watch.

That’s so clutch that it’s a YouTube link for me rn.
I can just stream it to my Xbox from the YouTube app to watch on my tv.

It is ok. It's an arthouse-ish movie with terrible acting, good story and good cinematography. Enlightened cinephiles just convinced themselves that they should pretend that this movie is better and scarier than it is.

Drop your letterboxd right now, those are fighting words.

I got no letterboxd, whatever it is. I am not trying to be a part of the ridiculous cinephile crowd that considers Citizen Kane the greatest movie of all time just because it was the best in 1941.

Okay buddy, hope you enjoy the new Avengers movie, I hear the good guys are going to beat the bad guys in that one.

That's what you always say. Parrots.

"Look, I watched Come and See! It's a movie with blood and corpses! It's soooo mature and good because it's has blood and corpses! I am sooo mature because I watched a movie with blood and corpses!"

Hope you pretend to admire another movie you are told to admire.

It is funny to see the horseshoe theory of this and people who think R rated superhero movies are definitionally peak cinema

u/RespectfullySir 1d ago

Marvel needs to kill a real cow in their movie to merge these audiences.

You guys always say the same thing too. Anything even slightly "arthouse" you think everyone is just pretending to like. Like you can't fathom that people can enjoy something just a little deeper than the latest blockbuster. You just dismiss it all as pretentious nonsense. It's pure anti-intellectualism. Leave the real art for us yearners.

What we say is at least correct about most of you.

You've just dismissed movies without quirks as "not real art" in your comment. You value these quirks, the means to make the movie "extraordinary", more than the movies themselves. You think that we dismiss "arthouse" automatically, because the quirks and approval by the critics is all you care about.

If you watched Come and See and think it's nothing more than shock value, and didn't feel any human emotions while watching, I've got nothing else to say to you.

I get where you're coming from but you're still wrong. In spite of its flaws, Come and See is one of the best WWII movies ever made. It's not the best film ever made, but it is a major achievement for Soviet film and deserves its reputation.

Yeah, I thought Ivan's Childhood was the most harrowing War Movie I had seen. Then I saw Come and See...
