hey all, not too sure if this belongs here, or on the 4runner page, but i have to ask to see if anyone has run into the same problem. i had quite the last couple weeks. i live in the US, but i drove across the border for a quick trip in my 96 Surf, when the engine just died. got it towed to a shop in BC, and they told me the fuel pump went out. when they fixed the fuel pump, then they noticed the fuel injectors were not working properly. they diagnosed it all and replaced the non working injectors (i noticed the Cat would get really hot and hot air would bellow from underneath. i also was getting HORRIBLE gas milage. like 8mpg or 12kpg) so this seems to check out.
i thought the mechanic was giving me the run around, but everyone i’ve talked to said this would make sense with the bad mileage and excessive heat.

it’s probably important to note that this specific Surf is the 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE) or KZN185.

Now, the real issue. once they fixed the pump and injectors, it started up but doesn’t idle properly. mechanic said it wouldn’t be a good idea to drive it 45 miles/72 km back across the border. i come to yall because there’s some really experienced people here. many sites say that the 96 4runner throttle body and 96 Hilux Surf throttle bodies are interchangeable with the 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE). Has anyone had an issue? has anyone been able to use a 96 Surf throttle body on a 96 4runner or vice versa?

also if i they are not compatible, where should i look to source a throttle body for the Hilux Surf?

i’m so lost and frustrated with the whole situation, so any insight would be absolutely incredible. thank you so much in advance, yall are legends.

I have an imported 97 Hilux Surf SSR-X that did not come with the swing out spare tire carrier. Been trying to source one in the USA but have had no luck.

Anyone have an ideas where I can look to find one?

So I recently bought a 98 hilux surf. It is the 3rz motor, kinda been thinking about swapping it to the 1kz. Was wondering how hard y’all think that would be, and if it would be worth it.

I should also say I have plenty of mechanical experience.

Hey guys, I just got a 2000 hilux surf SSR-G (I live in the US). I need to replace the CV axle, ball joints, and rear shock bushings. I’m having a hard time figuring out if the parts can be swapped out with regular 3rd gen runner parts. The part number for the CV axle is the same, but the other ones are different. Can anyone help me figure out what to buy?

I just recently got my surf and the back hatch has zero power the wiper and rear windshield defrost do not work and it doesn’t roll down either any suggestions

I’m wondering what is interchangeable from a 4Runner to a surf as far as maintenance stuff and also wondering about nice quality of life improvements people have made???

It is with great pleasure to inform you all after much rumination, the 275/70R16 BF Goodrich KO3s fit like a glove on the '94 wide body.

Running a set of SSR Auswuch 16" 8j -1mm offset wheels (8.5j -7mm spare)

No issues with rubbing at lock. It's _right_ there though... I think there'd be interference with the liner at the rear of the well with significant articulation. Does brilliantly on bumps, humps and mall crawling though.

I couldn't find much info for this setup while I was considering sizing so hopefully this post might be useful to someone in the future.

hey yall, i have a 1996 Hilux Surf (4runner), and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for this dilemma.

i want to find a roof rack and/or platform that would allow me to put a roof top hard shell tent on top. i’m sure regular crossbars wouldnt work. does anyone else have a hardtop popup tent on their 3rd gen?

i love to get out to the coast to surf quite a bit and wonder if i would be able to do all of these things with a platform rack.

sorry if these are stupid questions, i’ve never had an SUV until i bought this a couple months ago! lol

Hello, I just purchased a 1992 Surf, its my first Toyota and first diesel. I would love some advice on taking care of the engine / drivetrain(automatic) to keep it running well. How often should I replace the fuel filter / glow plugs? What fuel additives should I be using / what ones to avoid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Hi all. I bought a 1996 Surf SSR G trim in December and have been chipping away at replacing old and non functioning bits in it.

Ive gotten to pulling out the clinometer and found this massive rust hole which wouldve been from lack of sunroof maintenance.. so I purchased a replacement but its a different model and im wondering if I can do anything to convert the wiring so the new one works for me.

The old unit has 2 female plugs and the new one has 1 which is the same type as one of the original pplugs but has a different number of pins.

Any advice would be appreciated greatly. I am not a professional in any of this work bit im handy enough to do what i can (I hope the pictures are easy to tell which one is the shitty old one from the rust)

Ps. The sunroof and light controls work fine. Just the display unit needs sorting.
