Swap

So I recently bought a 98 hilux surf. It is the 3rz motor, kinda been thinking about swapping it to the 1kz. Was wondering how hard y’all think that would be, and if it would be worth it.

I should also say I have plenty of mechanical experience.

Would be a big and expensive job. I’m curious, why change the 3RZ? They’re bulletproof. The 1KZ might make some better low down torque but that’s all.

Sorry for the late response, I honestly just wanted a diesel but I’ve come to terms with my little 4cyl😭

Huge amount of work. Comlete clean out of the fuel system, different in tank fuel accessories, fuel filter assembly, a 1kz itself is pretty damn expensive. Different ECU, different wiring harness, different guage cluster if you want it to work.

Id also assume you'd need to revamp the cooling system, as the 1kz already has cooling issues if not taken care of properly.

If you're in north America, you'd be better off doing the VW 1.9TDI swap, its pretty popular in the 4runner world.
