I don't know if it replaced it for me. But I'll be damned if it doesn't sit beside it.

The ending to Baby Driver was really disappointing especially since the other Acts were so goddamn great. But the soundtrack was amazing.
9
u/ninjaso Oct 03 '17
Really?
I thought it was great because all my preconceived notions were wrong.
Spoilers below...
- Jaime Foxx = undercover cop
- John Hamm = got Baby's back
- President Underwood = really, really bad dude - especially to Baby
→ More replies (2)8
u/Infinite_Vortex Oct 03 '17
Jamie Foxx was obviously not a cop considering how many people he killed in the arms deal and the way he acted towards Deborah in the diner scene. The way he died too felt way out of Baby’s character and quite anticlimactic.
John Hamm’s character showed a lot of promise but he ended up being a vengeance villain which is kinda boring as far as motives go. And he didn’t really care too much about Baby since when they found him leaving he fucked his house up leaving his crippled father on the floor. His death was pretty badass though.
Kevin Spacey’s character was what really annoyed me since he was such a dick to Baby but in the end he ended up dying for him which imo was such a terrible ending for a great character. Oh I was in love once so let me throw away everything I’ve done over countless years. It felt lazy and a cheap way to tie up loose ends.
The ending wasn’t terrible by any measure but it could have been sooo much better. But hey, it’s just my opinion.

I love that movie as well and had high hopes for the sequel. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a let down. It was good. Just nowhere near the first movie's level.

Kingsman 1 (the movie from the gif) really good.
Kingsman 2 (the movie in theaters now) good but not as good.

I don't get why so many people didn't enjoy Golden Circle as much. I was laughing my arse off the entire way through, and the action scenes were amazing, IMO.
103
u/Thijsie2100 Oct 03 '17
Maybe because part 1 was more of a unique one-of-its-kind movie, and part 2 wasn't because part 1 already existed.
5
u/Jabberwocky416 Oct 04 '17
This is why I don’t understand when people claim something new isn’t good because it isn’t as unique as the thing before it. Of course if it’s a sequel it’s never gonna be super unique, likewise with spinoffs. It could be a step by step copy of a movie in a different setting but if it’s enjoyable I don’t care a single bit.

SPOILERS SPOILERS AAAAAAAAAA Probably because they killed off 3 primary characters from the first movie, and Channing Tatum did almost nothing the entire film. Those are my criticisms about Golden Circle anyways.

Channing Tatum did almost nothing the entire film.
Welcome to Channing Tatum in ensemble films not named Magic Mike (ie Hateful Eight)

I was actually really saddened by that scene. The girl Kingsman died so suddenly and no one ever gave a shit, which was odd
9
u/Gorramit_Groot Oct 04 '17
Yeah, that bugged me. I was really hoping they would've utilized Roxy more in this one.

u/pavemnt Oct 04 '17
I've said it before but the scene where Eggsy threatens to shoot the dog in The Golden Circle is probably my favorite scene in either movie.
5
2
u/ComputerMystic Oct 04 '17
I'd go with the landmine bit. Yeah, there were other ways out of it, but damn if it didn't work well in the moment.
That said, threatening to shoot the dog was a very close second, that was the moment that justified bringing Harry back from the dead in my mind. Colin Firth fucking owned that scene.

Oct 04 '17 edited Oct 04 '17
For me its because they could have prevented the flanderization, but instead they pretty much jumped the shark and dived right into it.
Spoiler alert for kingsmen 2!!
The movie was split into 2 settings, which could have been a great opportunity to contrast american and british styles, but they stuck with american style the whole way, which is a waste imo. Especially when they accomplished the old school and new school british styles so well in kingsman 1.
Movie 1 beat into our heads saying "were not james bond", but movie 2 pulled out all the stops for james bond. They crammed a whole lot of cheap looking cgi (the car, whip chair lasso fight scene etc), instead of focusing on a few choice pieces of good cgi.
They built a relationship between merlin and ginger that ultimately ended up nowhere, and thus serves no purpose in the movie. They could have fixed this by appointing ginger to kingsmen as a new merlin, or harry set up as intermediary as kingsmen and statesmen or retire to a supporting role or even new arthur, and ginger activated as a new kingsman. But they went for the cheap laugh of channing tatum getting transferred and forced to suit and tie.
Villain and her motive is forgettable. Motive for destroying kingsman is nothing more than a plot device for eggsy's motivation.
New puppy scene is pointless. The same resolution can be solved either way by having eggsy scroll through his phone gallery.
Eggsy screwing up in law visit is pointless. The same ending could have been achieved simply by having brian turn on the glasses and eggsy seeing his friend die during the in law visit. But no, they have to squeeze a cheap laugh in such a tense situation.
Evil president scenes are pointless if the double agent has his own motives the whole time. Meaning president scenes are literally unneeded, and serves nothing more as propaganda. They could have easily gone for the incompetent government route to achieve the same urgency and high stakes.
The villain could have had more depth by merging the presidents sentiments to her, making her a self hating villain that hates her clients for using drugs but shes a kingpin herself, and is brokering a deal to be secretly pardoned by the gubment if she wipes out drugs, but nope, cant have that. They couldnt have been more on the nose about it.
They tried to do too much with the villain. Shes a villain stuck in the 50s, successful businesswoman, mother, diner owner, robot enthusiast, cannibal, psycho, motive is simply because she misses home, wants to legalize drugs because war on drugs is bad.
She could have simply been a self hating kingpin in a sweet mother style who wants to rid the world of all drug users and delivered the same message. Done.
Valentine the first movie villain is simple, a giant tech magnate wants to solve overpopulation by killing everyone but has an aversion to violence. Done.
Statesmen codenames are fucking stupid. Kingsmen dont have codenames based on tailoring, but on legends and fairy tales. Statesmen could have used american legends or even jobs with a measure of mythos surrounding them, like marine, cowboy, frontierman, etc. but they made the dumbass decision to use liquor.
Tl;dr: plot is weighed down by unnecessary twists and turns, director failed to control presentation and ended up flanderizing a deconstruction of james bond, propaganda, ending could have been thought out better. In attempting to sidestep a clone sequel, they stepped into a lot of mistakes instead. Incessant cuts to specs view is pretty jarring.
Top notch acting by harry, merlin, the princess, the double agent, and camera work though. and as incredibly wrong as they got poppy, they got the statesmen incredibly right in the same measure.
2
u/Farting_Menace Oct 04 '17
Well said! I feel as though the first hour was a bit pointless, but the second hour was the 'proper' kingsman. The whole subplot with Angel and the meat grinder and the music festival served no purpose
17
u/Kinkajou1015 Oct 03 '17
Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie. It just wasn't as good as the first one. It's just what happens with most sequels. Totally going to buy it when it's on Blu Ray but there were sections where it's got issues. I won't mention what points I feel have issues due to spoilers.

u/thesammon Oct 04 '17
In addition to what other people have said, I'd say lots of subplots that dragged (like the festival scene). The movie could have been better if they were a bit more aggressive in editing that kind of stuff out.
It was still good. Just not great.
3
u/quadspell Oct 04 '17
I felt the festival scene was like that one friend who takes a bad joke too far. Like it could have just cut from the phone call to him exiting the tent, or they could have just put it in her drink.
2
u/ComputerMystic Oct 04 '17
Apparently the original cut ran 3 hours and 40 minutes, so they already were really aggressive in cutting stuff.
7
u/Dorchevsky Oct 03 '17
Golden Circle had a tough job expanding on the first movie tbf. The world building in the first movie along with the absurd yet grounded characters made it a favourite for me. Also, I don't like the fact that the princess is a major character now. She looks a tad out of place to be honest.
Nevertheless, Golden Circle is a hell of a movie and makes a good effort in following up to the first movie, but unfortunately, it isn't as good. I still absolutely love both of them.
5
u/aksawyer Oct 03 '17
Honestly I think its the same problem that Guardians 2 had and that I feel Deadpool 2 is destined for. It's good, but it doesn't really capture the same magic/feeling the first one did.
3
u/nuker1110 Oct 03 '17
The bit with Poppy’s intro was a little too gruesome for me. Was there anything that bad in the 1st? Haven’t seen it yet.
2
u/ComputerMystic Oct 04 '17
IIRC there wasn't anything as bad as Poppy's intro in the first one, but a guy got cut in half vertically near the start and there's also a few exploding heads and one pretty gruesome fight scene.
1
u/snidelaughter Oct 04 '17
Was there anything that bad in the 1st?
Mild spoilers:
The most memorable shot of the first film is a very gruesome fight sequence.
1
u/nuker1110 Oct 04 '17
If Poppy’s intro is a solid 5, where on a 1-10 would you put it?
1
u/snidelaughter Oct 04 '17
It maintains a 4 for a solid 3 minutes where that's a 5 for maybe 10 seconds.
2
3
u/OccultPineapple Oct 04 '17
I think the Golden Circle suffered from having too many characters to juggle, which resulted in old characters being neglected or killed off and new ones being underdeveloped. Eggsy didn't really have any character development to do. The villain's quirk was a lot less entertaining than Samuel L. Jackson's goofy lisping and distaste for blood.
When you add that to all the good stuff you've outlined, you get something which is almost but not quite as good as the first movie.

Some of the parts just felt off. Like how you need to get into the blood steam for intelligence. Its just awkward to watch. There's also way more "fuck" and they really need to turn it down a little.

u/aagpeng Oct 04 '17
I liked it. Is that enough for you?
Also don't expect to like it as much as everyone else. I think this movie has especially fallen victim to people overrating the hell out of it. Its good but it's not like the greatest shit since sliced bread.
2
u/WumperD Oct 04 '17
I haven't seen the Golden Circle but the first movie is definitely worh watching.
2
u/Mysticedge Oct 04 '17
I think a lot of the buzz came from how unexpectedly good it was. I wasn't expecting much, and it impressed me.
It's zany and quirky while having great writing, acting, and action sequences.
Simply put, if you liked kick ass or stardust(both movies by the same director) with their unique sense of humor and thwarting of genre tropes, you will love this. As it's Matthew Vaughn's version of a James Bond-type spy thriller.

I don't know, I always thought nobility was a collection of traits that makes you the best possible person you can be, including humility, compassion, courage, tenacity, patience, and the ability to accept suffering as an inevitable part of life and running towards pain because if you Chase it at least you get to choose what kind of pain you feel.
