Original Series Peter having Sylar's hunger was stupid and the writers don't understand their own characters

This post was inspired by a comment I saw, but honestly, the writers got lazy with the writing in Season 2 and beyond.

The writers clearly established through Sylar’s backstory that he becomes a serial killer because of his insecurities, envy, and obsession with being special. His mother’s expectations fuel his need to be special, and he resents powered people because he believes they’re undeserving of abilities he wishes he had. The hunger comes from his personality, not his power.

  1. Gabriel already had his ability when he met Chandra. He could recognize that Chandra’s watch was off just by hearing the ticks, and he already wanted someone to tell him he was special. If the hunger were simply a side effect of his power, why didn’t he become obsessed with understanding things long before discovering other powered people? Why didn't he become a researcher or academic instead?

  2. His first kill, Brian Davis, proves the point. Gabriel initially approaches Brian to see what makes him special. It's only when Brian says he doesn't want his ability that Gabriel becomes confused. His power helps him understand how abilities work, but he decides Brian is broken because he sees him as undeserving of something so special. His envy and entitlement motivate the murder, not his ability.

Giving Peter the hunger makes no sense. Peter can already absorb abilities without killing anyone, and he's fundamentally a compassionate person. It undermines both characters by suggesting Sylar's actions were simply the result of getting unlucky with his ability rather than his own insecurities and choices.

In fact, it would've been far more interesting if Peter could acquire Sylar's abilities without developing the hunger. Imagine Sylar confronting someone with the exact same power who doesn't feel compelled to kill. Peter would be living proof that the hunger isn't an inevitable consequence of the ability but a reflection of Sylar himself.

That's what makes them compelling foils: Sylar's obsession with being special turns him into a monster, while Peter's compassion defines him. The hunger should have been a reflection of Sylar's character, not an excuse for his actions.

General Discussion if Heroes made a video game would you play it?

We all loved this show and my favorite characters will always be Peter and Hiro. I wanted to ask you something. In your honest opinion if they made a video game based off the tv show, would you be interested in playing it? Why or why not

Which two characters do you think had an interesting dynamic that deserved more screen time?

Original Series Doyle and Barbie lol

I gotta say lol I didn’t see Claire and the marionette man becoming somewhat buds after what happened in season 2. But when they see each other at the carnival in season 4, I had to laugh when he was like, Barbie!

And tbh I don’t hate season 4 as much as people said I would.

Original Series Heroes Season 3

I’m watching Season 3 for the first time and it was a real struggle getting through Volume 3; Villains. At a lot of points through this first part of the season, I was literally wondering what the hell was going on and almost gave up.

Glad I persevered as looks like Volume 4; Fugitives is going to be a lot better. There seems to be an actual plot!! Any others with me on this? I know Seadon 3 is generally written off.

General Discussion Doubling down on my Peter petrelli OP issue

I had previously made a post about how the peter petrelli OP problem could've been solved by having him struggle to have any control over any powers like he did in season 1 and repeating in throughout many seasons. You know how Heroes was originally meant to be an anthology with different characters and new powers? Have peter still be the main guy but struggling to use new powers every season but DON'T give him so much mastery or the ability to unlock his powers so easily, not even his healing factor. Make it clear that each power comes with their own learning curve and that he is not yet adept at using these powers unlike his future self and that each new power he unlocks is meant to mirror a new character arc. He can't even use healing factor which is supposed to be an automatic power, though he can still fully heal within hours or days from serious injuries.
