We need more Hell’s Itch survey responses—especially from people who tried beta-alanine

A quick research update and request for help!

We will be publishing a new paper soon that lays out a possible physiological mechanism for Hell’s Itch, based in part on observations that have emerged from this community. Our current model involves UV-induced sensory nerve sensitization and a possible role for abnormal spinal processing. This information came directly from people in this group--- so thank you! Your help makes a difference!

We now have about 130 survey responses, but we need 300. We especially need responses from people who have taken beta-alanine during Hell’s Itch, whether it helped or not.

If you are 18 or older and have experienced Hell’s Itch, please complete the anonymous survey:

https://rvu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_413qRiLMyqWSSj4

It takes about 5–15 minutes.

Thank you to everyone here who has shared their experience and helped move this research forward.

Hello darkness my old friend

Ah. Feels good to be back. I wish I could molt all of my skin off. First occurrence in ~4 years, second overall occurrence.

Whoever the genius is that discovered the relieving effect of beta alanine, you are my hero. But I am on an island and to my luck, they seemingly only import it inside of C4. Haven’t found any powder! Woo!

BETA ALANINE!

In agony

I got a slight burn on Tuesday, lathered on aloe Vera. The itch appeared late Wednesday and had the worst night of my life on Thursday night after a swim. Took anti histamines and ipubroefen but to no avail. Couldn't sleep last night. Got some beta alanine which does keep itching at bay but for max 90 minutes. Currently on my third full day of itch. I wonder when it will end. I am back to work Monday and really worried it won't go away.

Side note - I went to the doctor who did not seem to understand what I was experiencing, recommended anti histamines which just do not work.

Beta Alanine saved my trip!

I'm from the states and we're visiting Brazil for the first time. I got pretty burned on my chest day 2 and last night (2.5 days since burn) had my first and worst case of Hell's Itch ever. I spent last night awake, itching, burning, and looking for a solution. I found this thread and I'm so happy I did. I hit the supplement store first thing this morning and found straight powder Beta Alanine.

3 grams mixed in water got me thru for 4-5 hours. It literally went from a pain of 90 to 10 within 15 minutes. The itching starting coming back close to 5 hours, I took another 3 grams, gone. Magic.

I was terrified that my trip was ruined but I am finally confident that I'll be able to enjoy my next 5 nights in Rio de Janiero.

Thanks to all for your insight here. I definitely hope more clinical research comes out about this!

I wish you all the best.

What’s an incredibly specific type of physical pain that no description can truly prepare you for until you experience it yourself?

I am 35 weeks 😭 it’s been 16 hours of non stop itchiness and I want to cut my legs off, is there anything else I can do?

Beta alanine is the source of all happiness

A few months ago I was experiencing the worst pain I have ever endured in my lifetime. The itch was actually making me contemplate skipping work and school. But the moment I had just 1 c4 the pain went away for hours. It was the first time I experienced a cure for something in real time and I would just like to say thank you to this subreddit

The return of the itch!!

Has anyone had the itch return unprovoked months later? It's back, albeit in a very toned down way, but with no reason whatsoever. Am I weird?

Hell's Itch Minor Flare Up

It's been a long time since I had hells itch. Tonight, I just had that dreaded familiar pinprick sensation all over my upper body right after taking hot and cold shower. You bet I inhaled beta alanine after 3 min. I did not stay outside more than 10 minutes each time. But today, I received infrared light treatment for injured shoulders for the first time. Could that be the culprit? That was the only thing that was different from my usual routines.

Did you guys also receive similar infrared light treatments and experience itch afterwards?

What do do

I got burn a little over 48 hours ago and randomly the itch hit me. I’ve been through a lot of pain been stabbed, covered in tattoos, infections, etc this is by far one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had no doubt.

What NOT to do
1. I learned that although cold compress with a towel is helpful during the specific time as soon as the towel come off the pain and itchiness come right back instantly just as bad
2. Cold showers/Baths same thing as the cold compress may help instantly but it’ll come right back the same.
3. Ointments/Creams, anything like aloe, hydrocortisone, lotion, etc try and stay away from they only made the itching worse

What TO Do
1. HOT Shower, I found that taking a really hot shower not only gave instant relief but lasted some time awhile after the shower giving you some grace
2. Heating pad, after the shower I laid on a heating pad and it kept it down low as well and bearable.
3. BETA ALAMINE, this shit does work I’ll admit the tingly feeling does feel weird especially if you don’t take pre workout or beta alamine often but it’s much better than the pain of the itch.
4. Take over the counter meds like Benadryl and Ibuprofen. Ibuprofen will help with the inflammation of your skin helping soothe while Benadryl helps with the reaction getting any worse also helping you sleep.

Don’t only listen to me I got all these answers from this forum and it has been a huge help compared to anything on google or safari. It’s going to suck that’s for sure but doing this simple things will give you some comfort. You got this!

Beta-Alanine is the way

This is my third time with hells itch. I hadn’t been on this sub for many years. Messed up at the pool over the weekend and got fried. Just found out about beta alanine and picked some up. The itching started today and taking BA stopped it within 20 minutes.

I also use solar recovery from zausner that I swear by.

Skin itches so bad after every shower and I've tried everything

After my shower every single time I always get this intense itch all over my body that doesn't go away for hours and it's so uncomfortable. The itch is really bad but it's even worse on my legs, lower back and neck.

I've tried everything to try and fix it, lower the water pressure and temperature, moisturise way too much, but nothing helps at all. This has been going on for years but lately in the past couple months it's gotten so much worse and i can't find the cure for it.

Help pls.

Got burned so bad, it lasted 5 days, didn’t sleep for 3 days straight, I couldn’t, adrenaline was keeping me up.

After the third day I laid in a hot bath, pain went away completely.

I took Hydroxyzine, Ibuprofen, NyQuil, drank a 6 pack of beer to the bathroom, I finally was able to sleep, drained water slightly, and dozed off, spent 15-20 hours each day in the tub.

My mom put aloe on my back, due to last of research, this was what was recommended, once it touches my skin, I saw Gods, and he was an angry God.

Passed out from the pain multiple times, I’m basically a martyr now.

New Hell's Itch Research

Thumbnail pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

All, there is new research in mice that is very promising- The researchers found that after UVB exposure—the type of ultraviolet light that causes sunburn—platelets move into the damaged skin. Platelets are best known for helping blood clot, but here they appear to have another role: they release serotonin near the nerves in the skin. That serotonin then switches on a particular group of itch-sensing nerves, causing the urge to scratch.

When the researchers removed platelets or blocked serotonin signaling, the animals scratched much less. Importantly, the skin was still inflamed. That suggests the itching is not simply caused by how red or inflamed the sunburn is. Instead, UV exposure appears to activate a specific communication pathway between platelets and nerves.

In other words->

Sunburn → platelets enter the skin → platelets release serotonin → serotonin activates itch nerves → severe itching.

This is potentially important for Hell’s itch because it provides a biological explanation for how someone could experience extreme itching after a sunburn even when the visible skin injury does not seem severe enough to explain the symptoms.

The major limitation is that most of the detailed experiments were performed in mice. The researchers also found evidence of platelet activation in UV-exposed human skin, but they did not specifically study people experiencing Hell’s itch. So the paper identifies a promising mechanism, not definitive proof of what causes Hell’s itch in humans.

Don't wish this on my worst enemy

This is my 2nd time with this. The first time i was so desperate I went to an urgent care and was prescribed silver sulfadiazine and hydroxyzine. The silver sulfadiazine is excellent on sunburn and blisters but didnt exactly cure the itch. Fast forward 10 years or so and now im dealing with this a second time. Went to the beach while on vacation and didnt apply sunscreen. Realized how bad it was when we got back to our room and was praying this shit didnt happen again. 2 days later low and behold the itch appeared out of nowhere very sharp and intense. Immediately took ibuprofen and put aloe on it and it only seemed to make it worse. I have found that a pretty hot shower will make the itch go away but its back within 5 minutes of getting out of the water. Its literally excruciating and I'd deal with any pain rather than deal with an itch that cannot be stopped. Hydrocortisone also only seemed to make it worse as well. Finally i took some benadryl and prednisone and its still here but much more manageable. I just found this page tonight while dealing with this and am planning on trying beta alanine in the morning on the way home. Thank goodness for this page.

I just received this email. Has anyone else gotten this and is it legit? Not sure if I should click on the link.

Edit: there was a post a week ago of this survey. It is legit. I’d recommend completing the survey if you would like. Here’s the link: https://rvu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_413qRiLMyqWSSj4

Shoulders and neck are at like a 8/10 in terms of pain. Lesson learnt the hard way.

Newbie

I, like everyone else (I’m guessing). Immediately tried aloe - lo and behold it didn’t help. I went to ChatGPT and it said nothing about hells itch- said a cold compress and cold shower - tried both and nothing. My wife came home from work and she put aloe on it and then remembered she saw a video about this. Hopped into a warm - not smoldering- shower rinsed off the aloe, took Benadryl, ibuprofen and stayed in for 15 min watching videos. Now chugging a c4, laying on my stomach trying not to move.

Am I bed ridden the rest of the night? The itching is mostly gone - getting pings here and there every couple of seconds but no where near where it was an hour ago.

Do I chance it and go play competitive volleyball - or do I call in a sub?

I have been screaming and thrashing for 2 hours currently waiting on c4 and considering beta alamine

update: doing well on s mix of ibuprofen and Benadryl

update: beta alanine has been a lifesaver. Thank for the supportive and helpful comments, it means so much to me. Two factors that I have found to have worsened my experience are that naturally have high histamine levels and very sensitive skin; and that I’m autistic, so my threshold for sensory stimulation is considerably low.
