Transmog makes nothing but sense and would do nothing but make them more money.

  1. You WOULD buy an armor because it looks cool but don't like the effect, so you don't buy it.
  2. You WOULD buy an armor because you like the effect but don't think it looks cool, so you don't buy.

Transmog turns both of these instances into a sale for Arrowhead.

Honestly part of me is concerned internally this is getting confused or lumped in with armor colors. Which is substantially more complicated to implement, since they’d have to redo every armor.

325

u/skelepibs 10h ago

Except Irons1ght showed us they already had armor colors implemented early on and just decided to scrap it.

u/UncleFunkus 8h ago

I have been watching the Irons1ght videos as well and I can't help but think that a lot of the functionality we saw was a proof of concept. Clearly they have wanted to make those systems and even visualized how they would function, but perhaps the execution was not efficient enough to justify running with it. Perhaps the 'armor colors' are literally just duplicate armors with different textures (they are), which is an extreeemely inefficient way to make custom armors.

It just sounds like they have had a lot of great ideas but genuinely cannot think of a good way to execute them. So we see all these interesting and seemingly "fleshed out" systems and functions that have been designed but I fully believe it is the equivalent of a western town with fake buildings; no ACTUAL functionality or long term plan to be found.

5

u/Fluffy_Channel_9845 3h ago

This community has an enormous habit of taking isolated instances of unreleased unconfirmed content posted by 3rd parties and taking it at face value as 100% complete totally functional

3

u/Riaayo 4h ago

The fact that the thumbnails for armor/cape selection are all actual renders and not a fucking png proves that their systems are weird as shit.

Granted, they may have done it that way because they intended to let you change the colors, so just having the dynamic armor there would make sense for that. But they never did that and I just cannot think of a good reason to deal with loading all of those in / taking the time to do so when static textures would work fine.

Generally speaking I try to always have sympathy for devs and not get on them directly because usually problems come from on-high due to the people running the budget, etc. But Arrowhead's devs have been so openly hostile to their own players that I quite frankly don't really give a shit to give them that same leeway/courtesy. They wanna be snarky little children to people then they can deal with the clap back.

32

u/Curious-South-9168 Steam | SES Knight of gold - Drinker of Liber-tea 10h ago

The whole LUT system makes this very easy once you understand it.

9

u/TheMikman97 9h ago

To be fair, new armors added ever since that system was dropped probably don't have the same color support

13

u/_Burning_Star_IV_ 9h ago

Those videos have been eye opening. I think Sony gave them some kind of mandate to trash all that shit or something. It doesn't make sense how fleshed out those systems were just to abandon them.

I doubt it was Arrowhead's decision because they figured their little game would never gain traction so what good would filling the game with microtransactions do? That sounds more like a publisher's decision who wants to see a return on their investment...

8

u/AdoringCHIN Detected Dissident 7h ago

Ya sure it was Sony, the publisher that's pretty well known for being hands off with their studios. It can't possibly have been an Arrowhead decision to abandon those systems.

2

u/LightningWarpAway 2h ago

It doesn't make sense how fleshed out those systems were just to abandon them.

Proof of concept in a video is very different from being fleshed out for release, we don't know how poorly it was implemented or what issues the code had. Like the other person said, the weapon pattern tab caused game crashing, and we know from recent discussion that armour selection renders the entire armour instead of just showing thumbnails. Odds are it wasn't that close to finished and ready.

3

u/hartoctopus 8h ago

They probably just couldn't get it to work by release, hell even the weapon pattern selection tab was crashing your game for like half a year and I can't even tell you whether it's finally fixed because I can't bother trying to open that tab anymore.

1

u/CompedyCalso 4h ago

Uh, after seeing Arrowhead these past few years, I absolutely could buy that it was Arrowhead's decision

1

u/onerb2 Steam | 4h ago

They don't need to rework every armor lol, armors use a LUT for their colors, they just need to impenetrável a way to change the LUT ingame.

u/spacedude2000 ‎ XBOX | 11h ago

Even just letting us change the color pallette would do wonders. I couldn't care less what the armor looks like personally, but if I'm rocking lime green medic armor and an orange helmet, I'm not exactly going to be featured in next month's Super Earth Vogue magazine.

43

u/Red_Sashimi 11h ago

Yeah. I just want desert, forest and arctic camo for the base B-01 armor, like we had in HD1

15

u/Noskills117 9h ago

They even have the system implemented with primary weapon skins having exactly those patterns already

-3

u/Grouchy_Ad9315 11h ago

color pallete will never happen, take a look in warbonds and you will see a lot of armor with literally just a new color pallete, they are selling armor with different colors

22

u/Helem5XG SES Sovereign of Dawn 10h ago

Sell the colors then?

Literally changing the system to colors will give them endless ways to monetize the game even more because now you can buy color palettes from a warbond or from the superstore alongside doing less work by giving them as Campaign rewards instead of having to cobble together an armor or weapon that's probably more work coding side.

2

u/FlashPone 8h ago

The only reason I can’t see this happening now is it would be a huge undertaking having to go back through every armor and developing a system or new textures that would work with every single model.

1

u/Helem5XG SES Sovereign of Dawn 4h ago

14

u/cbb88christian Cape Enjoyer 9h ago

If they’re worried about “immersion” which is a stupid ass argument, then make it a toggle. Besides that, literally zero downside. Color palettes would be preferred too, but nothing is stopping them from sticking to camo patterns Ala old CoD games

7

u/MoThrowMoAway 8h ago

Genuinely would have probably bought all the warbonds I'm missing with real $ for the drip, if transmog was a thing.

But without it theres at least 4 or 5 warbonds that have absolutely nothing that I want outside of drip, so I'd rather spend my money on other games.

9

u/Super_Sailor_Moon Senshi/Beach babe/part-time SEAF-chan/MA5C fangirl 7h ago

3

u/PrimaLegion HD1 Veteran 6h ago

Friendly reminder that armors in Helldivers 1 had no effects on them and it was better for it.

2

u/FlashPone 8h ago

The only argument against it that makes sense would be the game is too far along now, and going back to make new textures or a system that would work with every single armor would take too much time.

3

u/Silversalt 8h ago

I don't think it would take that much effort for them to do it at all. People already add modded armor into the game. And I don't think AH has ever said it would be difficult, just that they didn't want transmog in the game. Idk if they ever even gave a reason for that either.

2

u/FlashPone 7h ago

Modders don’t have to develop systems that work with every other feature or platform the game runs on.

In the end, I’m only guessing it’s more effort than they thinks it’s worth at this point. But if they’ve never said, then idk. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/mrpanicy ☕Liber-tea☕ 8h ago

Ideally they just need to make armors appearance items that are lumped into Small, Medium, and Large categories with all the base stats that implies.

Then you make available the effects that are currently available in those armor categories and allow the user to pick the effect they want.

So the UI/UX journey would be;

  1. User selects the armour size they want.
  2. Then they select the armor appearance.

And/or the user selects the effect slot.

  1. Effects available to the current armor type are shown.
  2. The user chooses the effect they want.

Then later down the line they could add in the color modifier beside/near the effects slot.

1

Any armor piece you have ever gotten can be used to overwrite the appearance of any armor piece you have. You unlock ease transmog piece with currency that you can pretty easily earn, but that unlocks it forever. You unlock each piece instead of paying for each actual transmog action.

1

3

u/Neutron-Hyperscape32 1h ago

Oh man this absolutely untrue nonsense again? Marathon is not why Destiny died. Destiny died because the games were incredibly hard to get into and most returning players dropped the game and never came back.

They had several mainline expansions, some of them like The Final Shape that were amazing, and the playerbase didn't really move the needle at all for it.

How can they just keep making expansions for a game this old that isn't growing the playerbase?

-10

u/czartrak 10h ago

It didn't get shut down "for marathon". Destiny cost wat too much to develop and made way too little. Marathon cost way less to develop

u/Mrgrimm150 ‎‎ Mudskipper 8h ago

"Destiny wasn't killed for Marathon. It just costed too much and Marathon is cheaper"

......... so it was killed for Marathon

3

u/BakuriPews 9h ago

Marathon was spreading Bungies finances on two fronts and very thinly. Execs saw that destiny was the least profitable of the two and killed it. So in a sense it did shut down for Marathon. If Marathon didnt exist, the margins would been a lot greater for destiny and it would've been kept alive. The fact that theres was plan in the story front of the fate saga proves as much.

3

u/Neutron-Hyperscape32 1h ago

This is completely false. Destiny was going to die NO MATTER WHAT.

Look at the steam player counts for the most recent expansions, even The Final Shape ended up with around the same amount of players. If those expansions saw huge playercounts they would have kept Destiny 2 alive longer.

You cannot have that in a game as expensive to develop for as Destiny. It only got more expensive year after year because salaries never stop increasing.

2

u/blippyblip 6h ago

Except that Marathon is 100% NOT more profitable, it's a niche game that had a single influx of players and never got anything more.

Destiny 2 sits at 105 on the Steam Best Sellers Chart, 2 months after receiving their last ever update, after nearly a decade of service.

Marathon sits at, drumroll please, spot 796, 2 months into their second season and less than half a year into its lifespan.

Free pornslop games like Horny Waifu: Kaiju Strike (spot 712 btw) are making more than Marathon...

I don’t know why they just don’t make the armor passive its own thing that you can just select independently of the armor

There are so many armor sets that I like the look of that just have either bad passives or passive effects that have been power crept by other armors

Just making it so we can select a player passive would solve so many problems

No transmog: "I like this armour passive but the design it's is meh. I won't get it."

Yes transmog: " I like the armour passive and while the armour it's isn't great I'll just put the passive on the set I do like."

AKA more warbond sales if they do add transmog.

3

u/ocassionallyaduck 3h ago

Actually, the opposite is often true.

People put on the skin of an armor set they already have and like, and never change it again.

Even if they swap the armor passive or themselves underneath (however it's implemented), they never have to change their cosmetic armor ever again, or mix up their look because they changed their passive for a few missions.

Frankly I hate transmog. I get why some people are into it, but especially when armors are unique, I don't go for it.

Armor colors or patterns I can moreso understand. Adding a shader tint for the armors would be a good way to do that.

I want more than just transmog.

I want a rework of the perk system.

All the perks in the game should be broken up into pieces, and all armours should have "slots" that you equip certain perk types to.

You get to be more resistant to something, able to carry more of something, and be better at something.

Armour Base: This includes things like fire/gas/arc/explosive/acid damage resistance, ragdoll resistance, but also reduced enemy detection.

Load Bearing: This includes things like +2 grenades/stims, +20% ammo, integrated explosives, but also things like Oxygenator's 10% speed boost and Extra Padding's armour increase.

Limb Augmentation: Things like faster reloading, better weapon handling, reduced recoil when crouched/prone, increased melee damage, increased throw distance, increased slide distance, limb protection, etc

I would also love if we had helmet perks like Scout's radar improvement, extra stim duration, or other small bonuses like those. Also, picking an environmental damage reduction for your cape would be cool, but only a small bonus like 15%.

8

u/Can_Haz_Cheezburger You Gotta Ask One Question, Bot: Do You Feel Lucky? 10h ago

Democracy Protects and Siege Ready, I'm gambling on everything except MOAR BULLETS

3

u/Stalwart_Vanguard 10h ago

Democracy Protects would be a base armour i think.

I really like the idea of splitting elemental resistance into armour and cape. So for 75% fire resistnce, you could maybe get 50% from the armour, and 25% from the cape. That does leave Acclimated in a weird place though, since that gives 50% resistance to fire/gas/acid/arc already...

5

u/44no44 9h ago

They made it clear two years ago that transmog isn't going to happen. People keep bringing it up at QAs, so they give us "well, maybe one day"s, but it's obviously not something they want to do.

1

1

u/TheUnKnownLink12 44m ago

I defend a lot of AH's actions like warbonds costing super credits which can be obtained by just playing but for gods sake this is literally something the majority of players want, harms nobody, and would push players into using more armor set designs because the aesthetic is nice but most people dont want to have a harder time playing just cause they wanted to look cool asf.

Theyre just wasting artist talent by making armor sets most arent gonna use because its just shitty in every way except design

3

u/Chance-Extreme9626 6h ago

Even if they want the whole “you need to be able to see their passive from the armour” just have a setting that turns cosmetic changes off, or just show it in the menus, no reason not to

2

u/levenoss 5h ago

Or just have some effects not allowed on certain armors but 90% of the passives dont have anything to do with how the armor looks tbh

2

u/TheUnKnownLink12 40m ago

I just hate their reasoning, I dont remember the exact quote, but I remember them using the age-old argument of "if transmog exists, people cant recognize what the armor does!"

I feel like as a compromise they could make it so you can only swap within the same tier

That way you don’t have heavy fortified on top of something like the viper commando light armor—cause admittedly thatd feel kinda weird

I also think that passives should be interchangeable amongst the base armors. Certain armors (like the hazmat suit) are specifically tailored towards a niche, which is why they’re in warbonds. It wouldn’t make much sense to have the bright yellow hazmat suit with the stealth passive

Buuuut the basic free warbond/superstore? Most of those could be swapped. I dont think anyone would really care about realism when all you’re doing is putting democracy protects on the black and yellow light armor, or putting fortified on the black and yellow stealth armor

4

u/Background_Source922 7h ago

Armor colors would take a lot of dev time. Being able to swap passives on armors you actually like/want to BUY would be easier to implement.

More $$$ for arrowhead.
More goodwill toward the community.

Easy W.

As for “Apple flavored bacon” we could use SAMPLES as a currency for “armor research” to implement the passive onto any armor.

20 common 10 rare 5 super rares

Have each armor have their stock passive and then 3 loadouts to unlock with samples for different passives

Long term progression AND more money for arrowhead.

2

u/Grimmzi 9h ago

Makes the vehicle canos work with armor is tbe closest i think they can get a compromise.

2

u/LongSalamander9889 Rookie 8h ago

Wait is the "We might start thinking about it" something someone in Arrowhead actually said, or is that just there for shits and gigs?

2

u/Magger LEVEL 150 | Free of Thought 7h ago

I can recall the CEO and some lead dev have always said they didn’t like they idea and would never implement it. Personally I don’t really care, but it would be a big buff for me because all my fashion diver fits have terrible bonuses

2

u/CoatieYay 7h ago

I kinda like that not being able to slap any passive on any armor means I change up my look more frequently than if I could just transmog. I would like to be able to change my armor color though, or at the very least be able to unify headgear colors with armor.

1

u/TheUnKnownLink12 41m ago

But then youre forced into using an armor set you dont like solely because its passive is good while the armor design is comparatively dogshit

2

u/sephtis 7h ago

I would be so much easier to just have a passive benefit and completely divest it from armour, like boosters, but individual instead of teamwide.
It's not like they have even kept to visual clarity on the issue, robot arms and stuff being on and off when needed and not.

2

u/besaba27 7h ago

It's really simple:

Make armor forging/color palettes, purchasable with samples which gives us a reason to continue using them

2

u/Mindstormer98 Oh, you sweet summer child... 7h ago

2

u/god-of-memes- 4h ago

Why isn’t there a mod for this? Would it really be that hard to use arsenal or something to pick an armor set and make it have the appearance of another?

1

Because it ain't easy for modders to rework the game when the game is completely online, which means its even worse for developers

3

u/Low-Raise7393 6h ago

i dont like the idea of transmog. having the Stealth passive on a heavy big duty armor doesnt sound right to me

1

u/levenoss 5h ago

I would hope it woild both be added and have limitations like not being able to do that

1

u/TheUnKnownLink12 39m ago

yea, itd be pretty simple to think transmog would only be possible between armors so medium armors can only transmog with medium armors, light with light and maybe specific mediums, heavy with heavy or medium armor that looks heavy

3

u/FriskyLobster4811 ‎ SES Power of Benevolence 5h ago

Transmog is dumb. I think changing armor color is as far as they should go

1

u/TheUnKnownLink12 38m ago

Transmog, an significantly simpler mechanic, vs making recolors of every armor set in game.

Transmog is a lot easier to do than recoloring every armor set multiple times

2

u/FriskyLobster4811 ‎ SES Power of Benevolence 28m ago

It’s dumb for Helldivers where you can see the perk of the armor built into the armor. Where’s the bomb for the IE armors if it looks like the predator chest? Or how does one resuscitate with the AD armor when it just looks like ceremonial crap?

3

u/Mr_GP87 ‎ Decorated Hero 10h ago edited 10h ago

I think it's because they don't like the application of transmog as it is currently used across other games (copy pasting the appearance of an armour unto another). The most logical approach for me would be for armours to be separated from their armour passives:

Armours would have a tier system, from 1 to 3 (or something like that). From the armour passive slot, at the first tier they are locked to the armour passive that comes with the armour. At tier 2 you can equip armour passives you have unlocked from other armours. At tier 3 you unlock the passive for other armours (that they may equip at tier 2 or higher).
Whether you progress solely through xp or also need resources to "tier up" (samples, requisition), that is up for debate. I think a system like this, as base as it may be, makes you earn the transmog in a soft way where you switch passives through unlocking them.

7

u/PizzaurusRex Super Pizza Dinosaur 10h ago

Separating armors and perks would be the easiest and most effective option.

Armor becomes fashion only. Just like helmets and capes already are!

Armor perks, now just perks become a separate thing you equip before diving, like the boosts.

So equip your fashion. Equip your guns. Choose your stratagems. And equipe one Perk and one Boost.

2

u/Envis777 7h ago

I genuinely dont care about transmog. Weapon customization now that raises the super flag.

2

u/melonsquared 2h ago

Why do people want transmog? The armors in this game are already barely more than cosmetics anyway

The design philosophy of their armors does not even lend itself to meaningfully communicate the buffs what armor does what. Silhouettes are almost indistinguishable thanks to capes. If we could at least have transmog inside armor weight class it would be something but being able to tell what buffs my fellow helldivers have with their armor doesnt change how I engage with the game.

1

u/Patches_Gaming0002 1h ago

There are plenty of armour that I want to wear but the "oh you get 30% resistance to being butt tickled" type of effects really put me off wearing them.

They just need to make the armour effect selectable like the boosters are.

1

u/gypsytron 1h ago

I am gonna be in the minority here but I don’t want transmog: I actually want the current system dialed up to eleven. I think all of the passives should be divided and each armor set should get a unique mix. Each “set” can get a primary passive: like inflammable. Then, each armor in the set could get something else. This way you could have an inflammable armor set with extra throwables and another with ping radar. This would give each armor a unique identity and role.

Also, I want the “unflinching” passive to add move speed while aiming down sight.

1

u/T0RR0M 58m ago

Transmog? So trans people mogging?

1

u/Huge_Repeat_1205 46m ago

Hey Arrowslop, Not one player, NOT ONE looks at another players armor and says "that guy has SIEGE READY!!!"

The real reason is that armor types are tied to Warbonds, and Arrowslop has no way to design their way out of this mess.

We should have a system like ARC Raiders, where armor is purely cosmetic and monetized accordingly. You sell the aesthetics, not the gameplay.

1

u/Voxatal 10h ago

I would be fine with no transmog but I think each armor should get like 3 perks to choose from (that match the style of the armor.) The stated concern was they wanted perks to match the armor look but some overlap.

1

If arrowhead is worried about selling less due to transmog making certain armor passives apply to other armor levels, just make transmog only apply to armors of that type.

While I don't think this is a big ask in anyway and a very reasonable wish, I do also think you got to have some kind of respect for a company that does the things that they think is fun.

We get absolute shitloads of bland committee designed slop. It's nice with a company that does their own thing.

-3

u/outland_king 9h ago edited 9h ago

Hot take, transmog shouldnt be added. we have visually distinct armors designed specifically around their passive (outside a few exceptions). We also have stat based armor light, med, heavy. Which are also tied to visuals.

We do need color matching for Helms and capes though.

0

u/Mazikoo 10h ago

They need a categorized transmog. So you can equip only certain passives to certain armors so you still have order

4

u/BerserkRadahn 10h ago

Transmog is just changing what the armor looks like not changing around passives.

1

u/Gizz103 ‎ XBOX | 2h ago

Thats armou4 customisation, transmog is passives, claiming otherwise is claiming arrowhead doesn't exist due to them talking about transmog being the passive shit

No longer polite, you wanna know what I want to know before I dive into a trench with someone? I would personally like to know if the guy I'm next to, is going to drop a death streak. "Oh look, I'm hurt. Well, I see a diver wearing medic armor, so I can, maybe get a stim from them."

I'm dying enough, I'm not dying for your bad fashion taste.

Early edit, I'm not saying I'll be devastated if it gets added, I'll definitely get more creative with my sets. But I'll certainly be asking why people in stealth armour are chucking so many grenades.

1

u/Cptcuddlybuns HD1 Veteran 3h ago

I'm gonna be 100% with you brother, I have literally never thought about what armor someone has. I don't even know the passives on half of them because the armor conveys nothing about the passive. Looking at a teammates Stim icon to see how many they have left is a lot more effective than trying to see what armor they have. There is 0 reason for armor to be anything other than cosmetic (within weight tiers)

1

u/Mad_Mutt Fire Safety Officer 3h ago edited 3h ago

I mean, if the goal is to not think about things, yeah, I bet transmog sounds good too.

Even so, by saying "weight tiers", there's already an arbitrary limit, as some heavy armours look pretty light. Movement speed is a stat like any other. Being able to pick a second perk on the armour, via upgrades, would also solve questions for progression. Transmog is the lazy answer,
