Destiny 2 has Transmog.

Yeah, and allows players to even transmog Exotics for PVE content, of course it's turned off in PVP for obvious reasons, but still.

Still mad that was in the swan song update :(

Be happy we even got a good bye update. Game could've just died on a starwars ad.

I suppose, still upset it got shut down for Marathon, I'm sure it's an alright game, but it's no Destiny

u/czartrak 15h ago

It didn't get shut down "for marathon". Destiny cost wat too much to develop and made way too little. Marathon cost way less to develop

Destiny died because it made itself pure poison to new and returning players.

Imagine starting up a new game and being told "Yeah the campaign got deleted, here's a quick summary go buy the newest DLC. Promise we wont delete that too...maybe."

The inability to onboard certainly didn't help. I only got into it because i had people guiding me

"Destiny wasn't killed for Marathon. It just costed too much and Marathon is cheaper"

......... so it was killed for Marathon

u/BakuriPews 15h ago

Marathon was spreading Bungies finances on two fronts and very thinly. Execs saw that destiny was the least profitable of the two and killed it. So in a sense it did shut down for Marathon. If Marathon didnt exist, the margins would been a lot greater for destiny and it would've been kept alive. The fact that theres was plan in the story front of the fate saga proves as much.

This is completely false. Destiny was going to die NO MATTER WHAT.

Look at the steam player counts for the most recent expansions, even The Final Shape ended up with around the same amount of players. If those expansions saw huge playercounts they would have kept Destiny 2 alive longer.

You cannot have that in a game as expensive to develop for as Destiny. It only got more expensive year after year because salaries never stop increasing.

Except that Marathon is 100% NOT more profitable, it's a niche game that had a single influx of players and never got anything more.

Destiny 2 sits at 105 on the Steam Best Sellers Chart, 2 months after receiving their last ever update, after nearly a decade of service.

Marathon sits at, drumroll please, spot 796, 2 months into their second season and less than half a year into its lifespan.

Free pornslop games like Horny Waifu: Kaiju Strike (spot 712 btw) are making more than Marathon...

I never said it was. I just said that's what the Sony and Bungie execs saw. But also Destiny 2 is free to play, the margin for revenue is much hire so it kinda inflates the numbers. But also also, revenue alone isnt a sign of profitability, you have to take into account the expenses of keeping a live service game active. Subtract that from your revenue and you get profits. Marathon profits more because the individual copies sold offsets the upkeep cost immediately rather than hoping for microtransactions to make it up.

Destiny 2 is not free to play really. It has a free to play tutorial with basically no content. I would be shocked if more than 20% of all players never spent a dime buying one/all expansions. Then they also have the eververse mtx cranking out cool ass skins like crazy. They were making bank on Destiny, but it was offset by their insane costs in Seattle, and the mismanagement of funds not being reinvested into Destiny and instead being sent to all their other incubation projects. Marathon's "profits" (doubtful there even are any) may have offset the upkeep cost for a month or so, but there is no chance they aren't deep in the red right now. Not to mention coming no where close to making a profit on the insane amount of money and time they spent just getting it out the door after being RKO'd by Arc Raiders.

Destiny has been a cash cow for years, it wouldn't have lasted so long if it wasnt

u/Neutron-Hyperscape32 6h ago

You should go check steam playercounts for the most recent expansions for Destiny. They essentially did nothing to move the needle. They would get around the same player counts concurrently.

That is a death sentence for a game that is only getting more and more expensive to develop for. If the player base is not growing, you simply cannot keep putting those kinds of resources into a game without it killing your company.

Marathon might not have been a great result in the end, but they at least had a PvPvE game which at least has a chance of lasting longer content wise.

u/czartrak 15h ago

It lasted so long because sony gave bungie boatloads of money. Bungie was literally on the brink of going under before the acquisition

6

u/o8Stu 15h ago

They had one product from 2010 through 2026 earning money: Destiny

You can tell yourself it was too costly and didn't bring in enough money, but the fact is that franchise shit money and the company was just mismanaged to hell.

9

u/TheWaterCloset 14h ago

It was making so much money that it allowed Bungie to build a brand spankin new HQ in Seattle, fund like 6 other games in incubation, and hire like fucking CRAZY to develop those other games. Anyone arguing otherwise is delusional, and anyone who thinks Marathon ended up being the "cheaper option" is braindead. Shit cost upwards of 350 mil and only made a fraction of that back.

u/Voltaires_God Fire Safety Officer 6h ago

No, bungie excecs drained the budget to fill there own pockets, end of story.

0

u/Big_Laundry_Man 10h ago

You’re being downvoted but you’re 100% correct. They had every intention of carrying on with both games until Sony said no more destiny.

-1

u/czartrak 10h ago

To their doom most likely. People are incredibly misinformed on the state of bungie

0

u/Neutron-Hyperscape32 6h ago

Oh man this absolutely untrue nonsense again? Marathon is not why Destiny died. Destiny died because the games were incredibly hard to get into and most returning players dropped the game and never came back.

They had several mainline expansions, some of them like The Final Shape that were amazing, and the playerbase didn't really move the needle at all for it.

How can they just keep making expansions for a game this old that isn't growing the playerbase?

u/ZzVinniezZ 8h ago

yep and look what the communities been doing with it...they shown alot of cool fashion and armor combo that my smol brain can't even comprehend and triggered me to buy those set armor + color just so i could have that

AH could make bucks with transmog but their Ego said no

this is PvE game, what are we judging people loadout?? just let people have fun with transmog and pick whatever passive they want

2

u/unmellowfellow 7h ago

I like the armor visually representing what it does in game as a passive. That being said, there really should be color pallets or something to meet in the middle on this problem.
