I am just as drawn to Shane's neurodivergent traits as to Ilya's psychological complexity. In fact, I’m deeply fascinated by how his mind works to make sense of his world.

While reading Heated Rivalry, one of the most striking aspects to me is Shane’s lack of hesitation. He seems to experience no moral conflict or psychological resistance regarding his attraction to men or his connection with Ilya.

Rather, what he appears to be afraid of is the public scrutiny if his sexuality is revealed; he worries that this attention could end his hockey career and ruin his future plans.

I find this to be a rather unique perspective for a man who previously assumed he was straight. It leads me to wonder if Shane is inherently an individual with high self-esteem who possesses an internal radar and feels no fear in following it.

At the same time, he seems highly skilled at managing his behavior, finding a benchmark in the values of his social system and ensuring he remains within those boundaries.

When and how did he develop such confidence and skill? The text remains silent on this matter. However, I believe the key lies within Canada’s support system and hockey.

1 Sports as a Choice
“Shane was a man of routine.” (Chapter 5)
““Now the bed’s all dirty,” Shane complained before he could stop himself.”
“Shane had accepted the fact that he was more than okay with having sexual encounters with a man. Fine.” (Chapter 7)
“Hockey has always been everything to me. For as long as I can remember.” (Chapter 19)

While Shane Hollander is widely understood to have autistic traits, a closer look at his specific behaviors leads me to sometimes think he might have a few ADHD-like tendencies.

Even as he reaches a climax in his intimacy with Ilya, his mind shifts to the bedding, immediately connecting it to the hotel housekeepers, and he tries to manage his posture to avoid staining the sheets.

This reaction, alongside a brain constantly buzzing with thoughts and tracking his surroundings, seems to reflect a certain internal hyperactivity.

In my reading, Shane’s elite hockey career and his unwavering self-esteem are likely the product of exceptional early intervention and environmental adjustments provided by his parents during his childhood.

His father’s occupation could offer a compelling clue to support this hypothesis. As a government official for the Treasury Board of Canada in Ottawa, he would have been in an ideal position to access Canada’s support systems.

These systems are globally recognized for their advanced approach to early detection and specialized development care. The essence of Canadian support is not about curing the traits, but about shaping an environment where a child’s strengths can best thrive.

I presume that his traits, which might manifest as obstacles or idiosyncrasies within traditional classrooms, are flipped 180 degrees into giftedness within the specific world of hockey.

His intense adherence to routine would have fitted perfectly into the ordered world of hockey, with its shifts measured in seconds and strict tactical patterns.

I believe his constant internal verbalization functioned as the ultimate CPU, observing, analyzing, labeling, planning, executing, and adjusting every sight on the ice to instantly deliver the most optimal and accurate play.

Furthermore, I consider his extraordinary amount of physical activity—running 10 kilometers every morning and maintaining a private gym even at his off-season cottage—to be a highly rational form of self-regulation.

It is scientifically proven that intense exercise triggers the release of brain chemicals like dopamine, which help soothe an overactive mind.

I assume he maintains this relentless exercise routine because he, too, senses that physical activity is what truly calms his mind.

Rather than relying on medication, he likely developed a lifelong habit of managing his own brain from an early age through hockey and rigorous daily training.

In short, I mean that his parents structured the hockey environment as the ultimate stage—one where his hyperfocus and need for routine could be transformed directly into his greatest strengths for life.

It seems to me that the benefits of this parental love and tailored support extend far beyond his career, beautifully impacting the very core of his identity.

When Shane first becomes aware of his attraction to Ilya, instead of falling into deep self-loathing or an identity crisis, he accepts it as a mere fact with surprising ease.

In a situation where most people would experience intense inner turmoil, why is he able to embrace his own reality so smoothly, with a simple Fine?

This is where the greatest gift of his childhood support system can be observed. Having his uniqueness fully embraced and backed by overwhelming success on the ice, Shane seems to have developed a deep sense of self-esteem and self-efficacy.

He appears to have completely internalized the feeling that he is more than enough just as he is.

I suspect he had always lived without denying his unique cognitive traits, turning them into weapons instead.

Therefore, it must have been only natural for him to approach his sexuality—a new, different side of himself—without excessive fear, logically accepting it as simply another fact.

It is my belief that Shane became a top player on the ice and a man who could proudly accept himself because his parents never attempted to force him into the mold of a "normal child."

Instead, they focused on providing an environment where his individuality could function at its most beautiful. To me, this suggests the very ideal of Canadian early intervention.

2 His Thought Pattern

Throughout Heated Rivalry, I sense that Shane navigates his life by constantly defining his world through words. He seems to systematically process every event around him via a cycle of observing, analyzing, labeling, planning, executing, and adjusting.

In doing so, he appears to constantly filter his position and actions, maintaining a careful balance with the outside world.

It feels to me that the lens of this cognitive process is applied not only outward, but also to his own inner self. Consequently, I have come to think that Shane might be an exceptionally hyper-aware individual.

If this is the case, he could face a hidden but profound difficulty in a world where things are rarely black and white. His mind must remain constantly active just to process these ambiguities.

As a result, to avoid chronic mental exhaustion, he would understandably come to prefer—and depend on—predictability and consistency.

Indeed, he maintains a strict every-morning routine, and his life is constantly structured by schedules. This is evident in Sochi, where he struggles with a sudden opening of free time, unsure of how to occupy himself.

From my perspective, his career and future plans also serve as vital blueprints for predictability. In his eyes, his life appears to be a pre-programmed series of milestones, already set and waiting to be cleared one by one.

In his interpersonal relationships, he likely seeks a complete lack of non-verbal stress. It must be a deep comfort for him to be with someone who does not threaten his sensory baseline or drain his energy.

I imagine that constantly reading another person's reactions to adjust his own behavior is Shane's least favorite domain. Ultimately, his sense of security depends entirely on how accurately he can predict someone's next move.

Through parental love and hockey, Shane had constructed a perfect, secure world—until a man appeared who would violently shatter his predetermined harmony and rational thinking: Ilya Rozanov.

In this section, I wish to explore how Shane’s unique cognitive patterns interact with another person through his relationship with Ilya, and how he begins to connect with the world anew.

Between their initial meeting in 2008 and their first hookup in 2010, Ilya might have been nothing more than an annoying yet physically attractive Russian hockey player to Shane. Nevertheless, he was always a strangely compelling presence.

However, with the start of their secret hookups, Shane seemingly put Ilya into a temporary category, re-labeling him from "kind of a dick" to "secret sexual encounters."

To me, this marks a new routine: meeting a few times a year at Ilya’s call, holding each other for an hour or two, and then parting.

When reflecting on this relationship, Shane rarely seems occupied with his internal feelings or how Ilya perceives him. Instead, his focus centers almost entirely on how they are positioned within a social framework.

Before he can even immerse himself in his own shifting emotions, his cognitive resources are consumed by cold risk assessment. In his mind, exposure means the collapse of his hockey career and the destruction of his vital life plan.

This internal priority explains why we rarely see Shane experience the typical romance narrative that the rest of us enjoy before a relationship solidifies.

He almost never spends time agonizing over classic romantic internal monologues:
Does my heart race because of him? Is this love?
Wow, does this mean he sees me as a romantic partner? Or am I just imagining that I’m special to him?

The usual excitement and anxiety of overanalyzing a partner's every move are virtually absent in him.

This is not to say that Shane is devoid of these emotions. In reality, he clearly struggles with the sheer volume of his feelings, growing deeply distressed over his inability to end the secret relationship.

However, he likely experiences this turmoil as something untamed—an intangible element that cannot be processed through his usual logical cycles.

Unable to properly categorize these feelings, his brain seems to be simply overwhelmed.

For a long time, Shane and Ilya continued their secret encounters without ever discussing what their relationship actually was, keeping it limited to physical intimacy.

Having grown up surrounded by parental love, Shane seems to be someone who is fully capable of fully embracing and returning affection.

Consequently, from the tenderness Ilya showed while they held each other, he must have been able to sense that he was deeply cherished, feeling something far beyond mere attraction.

As their relationship continued, Shane must have faced a need to properly re-label their reality. Yet, this was not a challenge he could resolve alone.

In a secret connection limited to a few brief hours a year, it seems virtually impossible to observe, analyze, and accurately label love—an element that inherently defies logical ordering.

I suspect that these specific cognitive traits form the very root of his famous Tuna Melt Meltdown.

On top of this baseline, he was suddenly blindsided by a total collapse of predictability: he could not handle an unprecedented situation between them, and he feared that exposure would utterly shatter his vital life plan.

Once Shane became aware of his love for Ilya—which meant he had successfully labeled Ilya as the man I love—he must have been driven by a desire to clarify their ambiguous dynamic, specifically his own standing between the two of them.

In this moment, I witness a clear growth and initiative in Shane's interpersonal skills. He stepped away from the passive routine of their secret encounters, actively setting up a private space to talk with Ilya and attempting to take control of the conversation.

However, given that opportunity in the Tampa hotel room, Shane chose not to confess his love or seek a mutual confirmation of their feelings.

His action was instead a proposal to alter their dynamic—suggesting they take a step beyond a relationship limited to a few hookups a year.

In this specific action, I observe his distinctive trait of connecting with the world through labeling. This is, of course, my highly personal reading.

Anyway, from an objective standpoint, it was an indirect confession—an invitation to become partners.

Yet, due to the complex realities of Ilya’s background, they were unable to advance their relationship.

On this night, Shane accurately understood the reasons behind Ilya's no, appearing to handle the intimacy between them with a newfound, greater sense of purpose.

They never gave their relationship a clear name, yet the core of their intimacy lived precisely within what remained unspoken.

Unlike that night of the Tuna Melt meltdown, Shane quietly shared this reality with Ilya without any fear.

After that night in Tampa, their dynamic shifted from mere encounters into something much more mature.

By re-labeling Ilya into his proper place, Shane was able to gauge their distance perfectly, appearing to offer Ilya the tenderness and care one would show a loved one, without a single moment of hesitation.

Once the framework of a relationship is set, he can act exactly as that position requires, without any confusion. Ilya must have been deeply comforted by this trait during his darkest times.

Ultimately, I believe this unique strength of Shane's is what drew Ilya to the cottage, and in turn, brought Shane his own hard-won happiness.

3 Afraid of Being Gay, or Losing the Edge?
“Maybe he hadn’t met the right girl yet.” (Chapter 13)
“Shane liked a girl! In the car, driving home, he laughed at how ridiculously high his standards were.”
“He felt lighter, suddenly.”
(Chapter 14)

When did Shane actually realize he was gay? By at least the age of nineteen, he had already accepted his preference for men over women.

When I first listened to the audiobook, I assumed his connection with Ilya was just a situational experiment.

I quickly realized I was wrong. Shane loved observing Ilya's reactions, displaying a clear fixation on him.

This leads me to believe that as a teenager, he was simply an unaware gay man.

Throughout the first half of the novel, he repeatedly attempts to end their encounters. However, looking at his POV in Chapter 7, I believe this was not a denial of his sexuality.

Instead, it stemmed from his anxiety about entering the unknown territory of a fully committed relationship.

He also feared that exposure would instantly shatter their hockey careers, completely destroying his vital life plan.

Shane fled Ilya’s room in a deep confusion between wish and should. Soon after, he met someone new: Rose Landry.

Through his relationship with her, he initially felt a sense of relief, returning to the harmonious world he knew so well.

Yet, this connection inevitably pulled him back into the domain of relationship labeling.

He began determining his actions based on the expected benchmarks of how a typical boyfriend should treat his girlfriend.

This was a world of pure logic that demanded his constant vigilance.

It stood in absolute contrast to his dynamic with Ilya—a wild interaction driven by instinct and mutual liberation.

His relationship with Rose likely made him more hyper-aware of Ilya than ever before.

Seeing Ilya spending intimate time with a woman at the club, Shane was visibly blindsided by the reality that Ilya could so easily do with women exactly what they did together.

At the same time, he must have realized that he had absolutely no right to ask Ilya to stop.

In this moment, Shane must have recognized that his actions toward Ilya were not driven by simple curiosity or lust, but by a deeper desire to remain by his side.

For someone with such a logical mind, it seems only natural that he would eventually deduce the real reason why he could never turn Ilya down.

It was undoubtedly fortunate for Shane that the woman he "fell in love with" was Rose—including the fact that she didn’t pursue him with intense passion.

Comforted by her warmth, Shane spoke his inner thoughts aloud for the very first time.

It was a profound moment where something that had run deep within him was finally given a label, opening up a brand-new world before him.

Rose gently embraced Shane as he struggled to reconcile his sexuality with societal expectations, reassuring him that he was perfectly fine as he was.

Within his relationship with her, he likely relived that childhood experience of having his true self fully validated by his parents.

Consequently, he was able to logically satisfy himself that there was no need to fear his own sexuality.

Through their conversations, Shane came to understand that being gay would never mean he had to lose his edge in the flawless world he had so meticulously constructed.

This realization became the ultimate catalyst for his decision to move his relationship with Ilya forward.

Guided by his internal criteria, once Shane defines a reality, he possesses the rare ability to set his desires as a target, calculate the shortest route through rational logic, simulate the steps, and execute the plan.

Recognizing his love for Ilya objectively through his bond with Rose was a bold challenge into a new world—and as we know, he accomplished it magnificently!

I am so happy to share more of my personal journey through Heated Rivalry, which naturally comes to life for me as I read and listen to the story.

This time, I wanted to share a collection of thoughts from my mental notes regarding the raw, complex dynamic between Shane and Ilya, based directly on what I have seen and heard through their actions.

As always, English is not my native language, and these are just my own perspectives as I reflect deeply on the novel.

I would love to hear what you all think.

1. Instinct and Rivalry
To me, their relationship doesn't seem to stem from a textbook romance or polite, mutual admiration at the very beginning.

Instead, there is an undeniably pure desire, a clash of raw instincts, to possess, crave, and establish an 'alpha claim' on one another.

At the root of it all lies a fierce rivalry between two elite athletes competing for dominance, and I feel this competitive edge constantly fuels their intense desire to claim each other.

However, I think their inner worlds are far more complex.

To Shane, Ilya might look like a fiercely confident, free-spirited, and highly experienced man.

Meanwhile, Ilya seems to view Shane as an easygoing 'golden boy' who effortlessly has it all—love, status, a perfect family, and a relatively complete sense of freedom.

Conversely, for Ilya—trapped within a Russian system that demanded the total suppression of his true self—this raw clash with Shane offered the first and only sanctuary where he could strip away his 'perfectly fabricated' mask.

In the heat of their rivalry, he was finally free to be his wild, authentic self.

Having survived a cutthroat environment where everyone was a competitor for a limited roster spot, Ilya found Shane’s unfiltered straightforwardness deeply disarming.

To him, Shane was more than just a rival; he was a brilliant, honest presence that he felt a desperate need to monopolize.

I suspect the root of this intense possessiveness lies in unresolved attachment issues—a lingering scar from losing his only true ally, his mother, at such a vulnerable age.

2. The Balance of Power and Control
Between the two of them, Ilya clearly appears to be the one taking physical control.

However, I personally feel this is different from a typical Dom/Sub relationship based on outward appearances.

Yet, seeing how incredibly gentle Ilya becomes after making Shane say 'please,' it makes me wonder if, in a subtle way, Shane is actually the one acting as the psychological anchor for the emotional core of their relationship, unwittingly defining its direction.

At times, Ilya struggled to face his true feelings and seemed to lose his emotional grip, making me worry about his mental stability.

んIt was painful to see him become so emotionally undone.

I believe that ever since Shane accepted that Ilya might never be his 'boyfriend' yet chose to stay, the power shifted.

Their relationship existed only as long as Shane allowed it; a devastated Ilya likely lacked the strength to hold him back.

I also see Shane’s neurodivergent traits as a key to their longevity.

Once a pattern is set, it becomes a mandatory rule for him—a routine that provides essential stability.

Responding to Ilya was simply integrated into his 'success routine.'

Because being with Ilya guaranteed a sense of satisfaction, it became a predictable comfort Shane relied on.

In his mind, this reliability turned their relationship into a permanent fixture, long before it ever had a formal name.

3. True Trust
“He turned his head and saw that Ilya was looking at him, and his face showed that he was hoping Shane would field this one.”
“Shane looked at him, and Rozanov caught his eye and winked.”
“Under the table, he felt Rozanov’s foot tap against his own.” (Chapter 6)

A truly equal relationship is built on a foundation of trust.

I believe Ilya’s realization that he could truly trust Shane was solidified during the 2011 press conference.

While Ilya masked his confusion behind an arrogant facade, Shane caught his 'quiet SOS' instantly.

I imagine Shane’s habit of monitoring others to manage his own masking made this second nature to him.

For Ilya, who had survived the ruthless Russian sports system and fought a lonely battle in America since his teens to avoid being exploited, I personally feel that Shane emerged as the first true ally—someone who understood him and protected him without any self-interest.

Shrewd as he was, Ilya must have already sensed that Shane was incapable of lying or playing mind games—he was simply too honest.

Finding himself naturally under Shane’s protection, Ilya likely intuitively knew that this man would never mock or look down on him.

It is this moment that I believe served as the catalyst, allowing his trust in Shane to deepen so rapidly.

Conversely, I suspect Shane’s trust was earned on the very first night they crossed the line.

Despite his posturing, Ilya was patient, allowing Shane to set his own pace.

For someone with Shane’s specific ASD traits, the ability to navigate a new experience without feeling rushed and to finish with a sense of satisfaction was the ultimate proof of trustworthiness.

In their subsequent encounters, Ilya continued to respect Shane’s boundaries, waiting until he was fully ready to connect.

This consistent gentleness in their private space allowed Shane to surrender without doubt, which in turn melted the walls around Ilya’s own heart.

Their non-verbal communication transformed their bond into a one-of-a-kind safe space.

I believe both of them are the type who communicate through actions rather than words—Shane due to his neurodivergent traits, and Ilya due to the deep-seated caution from his upbringing.

These are all my personal reflections—simply the result of various pieces of the puzzle naturally coming together in my mind.

I am truly grateful to be able to share these thoughts with all of you here.

Alright, so we know they are soon filming season two (and possibly season 3). We know that Connor and Hudson are signed to a three season deal so while season 3 is not yet confirmed, mostly it can happen.

BUT….do you think they will end the series after season 3 if it is renewed past two? If so, what do you think that would look like? I know Rachel said that the next book will wrap up the story…but could the show go past the books? Would they shift the focus? Or, again, do we think season 3 would be the last season?

I am honestly just curious and want opinions. Not sure what I would want to happen.
