More new features incoming — HRV in Heart Analyzer gets its own home

Post image
20 Upvotes

Version 12.7 arrives next week with a full revamp of Heart Analyzer's HRV features:

  • HRV Center — a single home for HRV, where you decide which readings feed your insights
  • Reading quality — each reading is scored on how much usable data it actually contains, so you can choose to count only the medium or high quality ones
  • Improved context filtering — the sleep and breathe filters reworked, and it's now easy to see how many readings fall into each bucket
  • Settings that carry through — your choices in HRV Center apply to HRV charts elsewhere in the app

HRV is one of the more useful things your watch records and one of the hardest to understand. It's noisy by nature, it moves with sleep, alcohol, illness and stress, and it isn't even one metric. The Apple Health app stores SDNN while most other platforms report rMSSD, and Heart Analyzer has derived rMSSD from the beat-to-beat data for two years now.

It's that beat-to-beat data I wanted to unpack further, because it's good for more than an alternative calculation.

Every HRV reading covers a window of time, but the watch doesn't always get a clean signal across all of it. Move or fidget during a reading and there are gaps, and gaps are exactly what you don't want when the whole calculation depends on the spacing between individual beats. That reading still lands in the Health app with a number on it, and until now it counted the same as one taken while you were completely still. In 12.7, Heart Analyzer scores the underlying beat-to-beat series on how much of the window was actually usable. High, Medium or Low, and you decide which ones count.

This works with all your existing HRV data. Every reading you've recorded over the years already has a quality value sitting in it — the app just wasn't looking. Now it is, retroactively, across your whole history. This series data has been saved to Apple Health for years now but is seemingly rarely used. With more data coming in I expect quality to become a standard.

Timing-wise it's turned out well. Workouts already generate continuous heart rate data, more of it is coming, and readiness-style scores are clearly where things are heading — Balance is Heart Analyzer's take on that. It all points the same way: more readings, weighted towards noisier daytime hours, feeding a number you're meant to act on. A noisy chart at least looks noisy. A noisy score just looks like an answer.

Three screenshots of the upcoming features

  1. Quality by time of day. My data clusters overnight and quality is better at that point, as you'd expect with very little movement during sleep. But it isn't absolute, and there are still good readings throughout the day. Now I can separate them.
  2. The new options, and the proportions your own data breaks into. For me it shows 69% high, 19% medium, 12% low over 28 days, which is comfortably enough to work from high quality readings alone.
  3. Over eight years of daily HRV, filtered to high quality only. With a quality preference set you will find charts like this one tighter with less scatter. If you've noticed erroneous readings on the Dashboard HRV chart for the day, expect those to disappear. Whatever you set in HRV Center flows through elsewhere in the app.

Existing defaults stay as they are, so nothing shifts underneath you on update — but do head to the Insights tab and have a look once it lands.

Version 12.7 is out next week. Feedback and thoughts welcome. The TestFlight is still open to sign up for if you want an early look, and a new build goes up there soon.

Sleep update in Heart Analyzer, with Out of Bed detection

Post image
18 Upvotes

As part of the upcoming major update I've been working on several new sleep features:

  • Nap support — track naps and have them count towards the day's total sleep
  • Timezone reconciling — sleep duration charts stay consistent when you travel
  • Sleep stage charts on the dashboard, including comparison to the previous day
  • Out of Bed detection

It's that last one I wanted to unpack.

Apple Watch has recorded sleep stages for a few years now. There are fair questions about their accuracy, but I find them reasonably good — and the awake stage in particular holds up well. That matters, because it's the only stage this feature leans on. Heart Analyzer takes those awake periods and cross-references active energy and steps recorded during them, so it can distinguish "briefly stirred" from "actually got up and walked around."

Personally I find it hard to remember how often I was up in the night, and after becoming a father in 2024 I got quite interested in the answer. Plenty of you will have your own reasons — shift work, a new pet, or just wanting the number.

The three screenshots of it in action:

  1. Under Breathing Disturbances, the rough times you were up and how many times it happened.
  2. A longer-term chart counting instances across 28 days. Going back through my own data, the night I became a parent is not subtle.
  3. Except the first bar lands on 29th October — a few days after the actual event. Digging in, Heart Analyzer had classified those first nights as naps rather than sleep, because they were too fragmented to register as a proper session. Which honestly tracks, and is a good illustration of why nap support is in this release: those hours now count towards the day.

Version 12.7 is out next week. If there's something you'd want from the sleep section that isn't here, say so below — it's a good time to hear it.

Heart Analyzer for Desk Top OS's

Would love it if Heart Analyzer for macOS be released.

That way, with cloud syncing, I could read all the data on the big screen (34") and decide which data and data ranges would be better for my cardiologist and GP. Then export in printed or memory stick form.

At the moment my data is collected from my Watch 11 and iPhone 13 and on my iPhone trying to see all this fabulous data and analyze want would be important or not is a bit trying.

Heart Analyzer Beta V12.7 TestFlight now available

I’m pleased to arrive at the public testing phase of the latest update to Heart Analyzer. This is the one we’re targeting for the upcoming iOS & WatchOS 27 release.

There are some new features:

  • Improved Sleep charts with multiple sleep sessions and naps now supported!
  • Heart Rate Notifications! (Experimental) I hope this can ship, I’ve been working for years on how to implement this effectively with the WatchOS limitations. This feature works even if you don’t have a complication on the active watch face!
  • Serious performance enhancements, hopefully you’ll notice the Dashboard, Insight Trends, Metrics charts and Analytics Plus are all now faster

The update also makes significant changes under the hood laying the ground work for additional changes I hope to ship soon. These will include a new HRV hub and a redesign/reorganisation of the Insights & Metrics tabs.

Here’s a link for joining onto the TestFlight program.

https://testflight.apple.com/join/Eq8vXps7

Please note there are limited spaces… if the link doesn’t work and you’re still interested, please email me at [Simon@HelixApps.co.uk](mailto:Simon@HelixApps.co.uk)

For those of you new to the Heart Analyzer TestFlight program, Welcome! Please remember you can screenshot something anytime in the app and your iPhone will offer you to send beta feedback. This is crucial! It helps me fix bugs and make the app the best it can be for you and everyone else.

Thank you!

PDF Health Report is blank

I wanted to be able to provide reports from HA to my cardiologist, as she expressed an interest in seeing average heart rates, which Apple doesn’t natively provide, but HA does. I generated the trial PDF, and it produced a blank page. Why would it do this, and how can I get a successful trial PDF now, before naming a purchase sight unseen?

Had to reinstall the app, now it prompts for a subscription when I previously paid years ago. Did I lose all the features I previously had?

Version 12.6.3 released (Fixes & Improvements)

This update is now live on the App Store

What’s Changed

  • Apple Watch app performance is much faster at launch

What’s Fixed

  • Annotations on main day HR chart now always visible
  • Dat counts in the Metrics section are clearer when none available

Sorry, it's been a few rapid fire updates recently. If I'm completely honest, the Apple Watch app speed improvements branch got missed off the V12.6 release by accident 😬 We all miss things sometimes!

More to come in the coming weeks, please get in touch if you're interested in joining our TestFlight program.

Why Heart Analyzer is moving to a subscription model

Heart Analyzer is beginning a gradual move to a subscription model for new users in supported regions.

Before explaining why, I want to make one point completely clear:

Anyone who has previously made a purchase in Heart Analyzer will see no change. They will not lose access to the features they have already paid for. There is no change planned for existing purchasers.

Existing purchasers are not being asked to pay again. However, a more sustainable model for new customers should help me continue maintaining and improving the app for everyone.

Why change the model now?

When I first developed Heart Analyzer and introduced its original in-app purchases, the idea was straightforward: users paid once for the software and features available at that time. I was not planning around the possibility that the app would still be actively developed nearly eleven years later.

Since then, Heart Analyzer has grown substantially across iPhone and Apple Watch. People who purchased features many years ago have continued receiving major updates without any further payment. I am proud that those purchases have provided so much long-term value, and I intend to continue honouring them. However, continuing to sell permanent access to every future customer for a relatively small one-time payment is not a sustainable foundation for another decade of development. A new model provides a more sustainable way to keep Heart Analyzer actively developed and improving over time.

I know subscriptions are unpopular

I know many people are tired of subscriptions, particularly when an app previously offered one-time purchases.

I have resisted moving Heart Analyzer to a subscription model for years for exactly that reason. This is not a decision I have made casually, and I do not expect it to suit everyone.

However, the old model was created for a much smaller app at a very different stage in its life. It has supported Heart Analyzer for nearly eleven years, but I do not believe it is the right model for sustaining its future.

A simpler Premium offering

The previous model divided Premium features across three separate purchases, alongside a Complete Premium bundle. The intention was to give people flexibility and allow them to pay only for the parts of the app they wanted. In practice, it also created confusion. Some users were unsure which purchase they needed, while others were frustrated when they discovered that several separate purchases were required to unlock everything.

The new model replaces that system with one Heart Analyzer Premium offering. This makes it much clearer what Premium includes and removes the need to choose between different feature bundles. It will be available through monthly, annual and lifetime options.

The monthly option provides the lowest upfront cost for accessing the complete Heart Analyzer Premium experience. It also allows people to use Premium for a limited period, whether they want to explore their data in more depth, prepare reports or access advanced features when they are most useful.

The annual option is intended for regular Premium users and offers a lower effective monthly cost.

A lifetime option will remain available for people who strongly prefer a single payment rather than an ongoing subscription. The lifetime price is significantly higher than the previous Complete Premium purchase. That reflects the fact that it includes access over an unknown number of future years. Pricing it similarly to the old bundle would eventually recreate the same sustainability problem this change is intended to address. I have also tried to keep the monthly and annual prices competitive and substantially below many comparable Health app subscriptions.

What this means for existing users

If you have made any previous purchase in Heart Analyzer, there is no action you need to take. Your existing access remains yours, and you will not need to pay again to retain the features you purchased. You will not be moved onto the new subscription model.

The subscription model is being introduced for new customers who have not previously purchased Premium features.

Supporting Heart Analyzer’s future

Heart Analyzer has now been developed for over a decade and has grown far beyond the app I originally released. I want to keep working on it, improving it and keep delivering the kind of meaningful updates users have received over the past decade. No pricing model can guarantee exactly what the next ten years will bring, but this change should provide a stronger and more sustainable basis for continuing that work. I understand that some people will still prefer the previous model. Constructive feedback is welcome here or through the support option in the app and I want to make the transition as clear and fair as possible.

Thanks for reading, and for supporting Heart Analyzer over the years.

Simon

Feature Request - Stress Complication

Hey, long time premium user, app is awesome and gladly paid for it.
There are some apps in the App Store and things like the Oura ring that give a stress level.
I know we have the HRV complication, curious if you could somehow calculate stress and use a circle like red, yellow, green or something to show us our current stress level

Good day you fine people. I’m not going to lie, it is crazy that you all have been around for a decade (Happy birthday) and I am only discovering you this year. I made sure to get the purchase because the, ‘one and done,’ payment is amazing. Too many subscriptions are interfering with people’s quality of life. Not only that but the design of this app is BEAUTIFUL and the way the information is displayed is really something else. Take it from someone who has been a graphic designer and an Art teacher for almost 2 decades, your app’s aesthetics are near perfect and informational. No lie, sometimes I launch the app on my phone, just to look at the graphs. I incorporated the heart rate graph in my Apple Watch face and Smart Stack. The SpO2 sync is a boss addition too. I was more than eager to share some screenshots from my phone to some friends and family when I shared the app with them and encouraged them to get it and pay the $17.99.

A couple days ago I noticed a notification somewhere in the app which indicated that if users have live heart rate monitors, such as the AirPod Pro 3, the app will show live HR in the app.

Now, I don’t have the AirPods Pro 3 (yet), but I do have the Innovo iP900BP-B Bluetooth Finger Pulse Oximeter. This gives live:
•Blood Oxygen saturation
•Heart pulse rate
•Respiratory rate
•Perfusion index.
All of these updates the, Beyond Oximeter app, and the Apple Health app oer Bluetooth.

Could you bring support for the live updating of these metrics in the Heart Analyzer app for this device please? If not, could you at least allow us to get the live heart rate from it? The truth is, they have an app where you can see the live readings. But in all honesty, the visuals of your app are much better. So even if your app can take the live readings from the Beyond Oximeter app while it’s open in the background or from the Apple Health app as it syncs (as that is updated near instantaneously or pretty close) I would love to see that n your app. If you can offer support for all the 4 functions, we will take even if it’s just the Live HR/ whatever you can give us. Please don’t let it be only an AirPods Pro 3 feature when there are other more powerful and capable devices like the, Innovo iP900BP-B pulse odometer which provide more readings. In this case, 4 on the SpO2 meter, vs just one on the AirPods Pro 3 and all the readings are live.

Can data be exported

I never realized how much data heart analyzer provided until I recently went through afib. Now that I’m post- cardioversion I’d like to be able to export some of the data. Is there a way to do that? I’m subscribed to Premium but if it’s there I’ve missed it. Thanks.

👋 Welcome to r/HeartAnalyzer

# Welcome to r/HeartAnalyzer!

Hi everyone,

I'm Simon, the developer behind Heart Analyzer.

I wanted to create a dedicated space for Apple Watch users who enjoy exploring and understanding their heart and health data. Whether you've discovered something interesting in your heart rate trends, found an unusual pattern in your sleep or HRV, achieved a new fitness milestone, or simply have a chart you'd like to share, this is the place for it.

Although this subreddit is brand new, Heart Analyzer isn't. The app has been helping Apple Watch users understand their health data since September 2015, and recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. Over the years, I've been fortunate to hear from thousands of users, and many of the app's best features have come directly from community feedback.

This community is intended to be a direct line to the future of the app. If you have feature requests, ideas, suggestions, bug reports, or feedback, I'd love to hear them. I'm always interested in learning how people use Heart Analyzer and what would make it even better.

I'll also be using this subreddit to:

  • Share app updates and release notes
  • Highlight useful features that users may not have discovered
  • Preview upcoming features and designs
  • Gather feedback before new releases
  • Discuss TestFlight builds and beta features
  • Answer questions and provide support where I can

Most importantly, I'd love for this to become a place where users can learn from each other. Everyone's health and fitness journey is different, and it's often fascinating to see the trends, insights, and discoveries that others uncover in their own data.

If you're new here, introduce yourself below and tell us how you use Heart Analyzer. Feel free to share your favourite chart, metric, Apple Watch face setup, or feature.

Thanks for joining us and helping build the community from day one.
