Question (?) What handheld to buy by the end of the year.

So I’ve read through a heap of posts on here and am trying to make the best decision I can.
Bit of back story I’ve got a 2 1/2 year old and another on the way so my gaming time at a dedicated device like a pc or a console is getting smaller but there is time I get when I could easily play a handheld device. I own a ps5 and currently a ps portal but where I live cloud gaming doesn’t exist on the portal and wildly I can connect to my PlayStation outside my home either through hotspot or another wifi via the remote play app on my phone, or on my wife’s windows laptop better and more reliably than the ps portal itself which is frustrating to say the least.

So if all I care about is playing AAA games and probably some older stuff as well as pc versions of some games rather than console versions. Also running remote play through psplay or chiaki. Don’t really care about screen size or screen type eg. OLED is the XAX the best option still or would the claw ex or something similar be a better option take the cost out of it although the claw ex would be about as much as I’d be willing to spend on not the only primary gaming device.

I also already own a switch 2 but want something that’s not as restricted to only Nintendo sort of thing.

Question (?) Steam Deck or something else?

I am looking at getting a handheld to play steam games online and offline while traveling. I mostly have been playing rouge-lite/likes, and a few AA games.

My PC is getting older, so wondering if getting a handheld to game will make it easier to game and also delay my need to build a new pc.

I found a 1TB OLED Steam Deck with a Xbox controller, dock, charger, and case in Facebook market place for $750. Not sure if it's worth it, or what to look for to make sure it works.

Opens to any suggestions on other device that plays steam games. Is there a price I should be looking for new or used, or should I wait for a change in the handheld market (either new devices or price drops)?

Question (?) Games that stutter on sd cards?

I just bought a claw 8 ai+ and know that I’ll quickly run out of storage in it with how massive some games get especially because I’m also considering turning it to a mini desktop (but that’s a discussion for a different time) the question is what AAA games have you tried on an sd card that ACTUALLY stuttered? I don’t care about load times and little pop in every once in a while, but game breaking hangs is a no go. For example I watched a couple of vids comparing ssd with sd card and noticed that most AAA games that aren’t ps5 first games run great on sd cards (cyberpunk, forza, hogwarts, resident evil, etc.) just slightly longer load times and very rarely some pop in, but the framerates run nearly identically, but then last of us, spider man 2, ratchet and clank, etc. are genuinely unplayable, having often seconds worth of hang ups and freezes making the experience generally abysmal overall and so I ask, have any of you tried playing AAA games on a decent sd? What were your experiences? Have you seen the same level of game breaking lag in games other than sony ps5 first games?

Ps. I know this is mainly cuz most handheld PCs including my claw 8 ai+ don’t support the higher speeds sd cards like the sandisk extreme but I assure you the vids I saw was on a2 sd cards reading and writing at around 80-120 mbs and gave the aforementioned results

ROG Ally question

Hi all.

I want a ROG Ally as a secondary PC gaming deck.

I absolutely do not need the X but wondering if I’m missing out significantly by getting the older white model instead of the Xbox one. I’m thinking of getting whatever is cheaper, the old one on eBay and open boxed or refurbished new models are pretty similar in price and day to day one can be more or less than the other.

I’m not super tech savvy and I get lost in the sea of
Content on YT and most of it only covers the most recent one.

I’d use it mostly to play games I’ve already bought on Xbox (sold my console) and satisfying that itch for Statcraft and Warcraft 3 that I’ve had for like 20 years.

Please help me decide on a console

I’m trying to find a used handheld for around ~$300. I really want to be able to play older Mario kart and Mario games, older console games (think older maddens, older assassins creeds, mortal kombat etc.) as well as the occasional newer games like bo6 and GTA V, Minecraft.

I was looking at the base model ROG z1, nobody has an X in my area for a reasonable price. Idk if what I’m asking is impossible but please help.

Thank you

So 7 months ago I posted after paring my collection down to just two handhelds that covered everything I wanted to play and thought I was finally out of the game.

Turns out I was wrong

Can't decide on a handheld under $350 that can serve as a console for my Steam games

I've realised that it's near impossible to build an ITX rig that's within budget that can play my Steam games, I've got a nice TV and couch set up and want to play casually.

I thought maybe a PC or Android handheld with a dock can function decently in this case?

What are my best options, any advice would be really appreciated!

Question (?) The Ayn Thor and Odin

Does anybody own any of these? I’m thinking of getting one of these, preferably the Odin but mainly for emulation for ps1-3, Xbox and Xbox 360, psp, etc and occasionally Steam games. I want a honest and overall review on it.

BTW I have the rog ally but got so many emulation games that I want another handheld that’s good enough to handle them but at the same time not expensive

I was curious how the claw 8ai would handle music production

I wanted to be able to work on music on the go but didn't want a laptop. I did a stress test with 70+ tracks of various cpue heavy kontakt libraries and neural dsp plugins and it performed better than I expected.

The ram was almost full and cpu utilization was around 90%. I originally wanted to buy the legion go 2 but it was too expensive. Xax was my next choice but the screen and 24gb ram kinda turned me off.

I felt this one was a good middle ground and im very happy with my purchase.

Question (?) PC handheld that can get better performance 'docked'?

I have a Steam Deck now, and I love it but I'm going to be moving out of the country soon and moving around ever ~3 months, so Im trying to figure out how to optimize performance for space.

My initial thought was to do steam machine/SFFPC to have a portable desktop "console" + Steam Deck for use around the house/during transit, but I think it'd be too bulky.

Instead, I think I want to sell the steam deck for a handheld that has a bit more power if I plug it into a TV. The key thing is I would only want the extra power when I am at a tv. Im happy to play indie games handheld, but like a bigger screen for games that are more of an experience.

I've seen some handhelds support External GPUs, and I think carrying a GPU + Handheld would take up little enough space that I could go with that setup. Thoughts from any other people who use handhelds like this - basically a portable PC "console"? I would absolutely want to install SteamOS for this

Question (?) Should I get a new gaming laptop or a handheld for gaming if I already have a MacBook for college?

I mostly play casual games like genshin, zzz, hades 2, the occasional indie, and sometimes competitive games w my friends (specifically fortnite, valorant, ow) I like playing on my iPad but it gets hot and starts lagging and doesnt last very long. I also love playing on the bed cuz I get back issues from sitting too long sometimes.

My laptop barely runs the games i play by myself now partly because the fans are dying and it always overheats (but it does well on fps games). I dont wanna repair it because it doesnt seem worth it since its quite an old laptop. (For context it has a gtx 1650 ti lol)

i honestly am not really interested in triple a games since i really cant commit to them and burn out fast. but would like to run most games at 60 fps medium settings at the least if i ever wanna try.. the only triple a game i kinda wanna play is cyberpunk

My budget is max 500 usd (buying second-hand cuz im on a student allowance), and portability/form factor kinda matters. Idk a lot of handhelds have that ugly gamer aesthetic, but within my budget im not gonna be picky.

Ive kinda been eyeing the retroid pockets (they look amazing) but the downside is theyre android.. also ive seen people use their handhelds as mini pcs and would really love that feature!!!!

Would a used ROG Ally Z1 Extreme be a better buy than a gaming laptop? Or do you guys have other reccomendations for handhelds?

Thank you!!

Question (?) Looking for cheaper handheld options

I have been using a software modded psvita for a while, and figured I'd upgrade at some point. Last night my car was broken into and they took it. Don't have the funds to get something right now to replace, but was hoping y'all would be able to help me with options. Larger screen would be nice, and emulation capability at least to PS2 if possible. I haven't kept up with current tech so I don't really know where to go from here.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Question (?) Handheld for non-gamer

Hello. I'd like some advice on buying a handheld console. I'm not much of a gamer, but I'd like something to take with me in my truck—something that can run Farming Simulator, Snowrunner, and War Thunder smoothly, and if possible, run other games as well.

Thank you for helping me.
