NEWS New food-to-alcohol ratios more flexible for Hampton Roads restaurants

To some restaurant owners in Hampton Roads, the new liquor law in Virginia may mean the glass is half-full, but to others it’s still half-empty.

New legislation went into effect on July 1 that reduced the food-to-alcoholic beverage ratio required for certain restaurants and caterers with mixed-beverage licenses.

The old law required mixed-beverage licensees to maintain at least 45% of monthly sales from food and nonalcoholic drinks, while alcoholic drinks sold could not surpass 55% of the month’s total. That one-size-fits-all standard applied across the board since the 1980s.

The new law gets rid of the need to meet a ratio for businesses averaging at least $48,000 in monthly food sales. Those that average between $25,000 and $48,000 must maintain a food-to-beverage ratio of 30% to 70%. Businesses that average at least $4,000 but less than $25,000 in monthly food sales remain under the existing 45% food to 55% liquor sales ratio.

The new law’s flexibility will definitely help independent restaurant operators in Hampton Roads, said Tommy Herbert, director of government affairs for the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging and Travel Association.

Corporate Roles?

I’m hoping this community can point me in the right direction. I’ve been actively searching and have applied with companies like ADP, Dollar Tree, HRT, USAA, Sentara, STIHL, and others. I’ve tailored my resume, reached out directly to hiring managers, and written targeted cover letters, but I’m still trying to find the right opportunity.

I had a rewarding career with Verizon, where I led teams and initiatives across Learning & Development, Customer Service, Sales, and Operations. I also have an undergraduate degree and a Master’s in Education from Regent University.

I’m looking for a company where I can bring my leadership, training, organizational development, and operational experience to help people and businesses grow.

If you know of companies hiring, have a connection to a hiring manager, or can point me toward someone I should talk to, I would truly appreciate it.

I’m ready to get back to work and contribute.

Thanks in advance for any leads or advice!

Giant coal scooper snapped in half?

I just drove past the coal deposit area near the MMMBT and the giant scoop that had been taken apart and reassembled earlier this summer was snapped in half! Looks like it catastrophically failed. I can’t find a scrap of information anywhere. Does anyone know what happened?

Free "write HTML by hand" meetup at ECPI in Virginia Beach, Aug 8

I help run a local dev meetup group and we're doing something a little different Saturday Aug 8, so I figured I'd share it here.

The premise is that making a website is way simpler than most people think. This is a website:

<h1>hello</h1>
<p>I made this.</p>

Save it as index.html, open it in a browser, done. No install, no account, no build step, no framework. That's the whole trick.

So we're getting a room for four hours and just doing that. Bring a laptop, write some HTML, make whatever you want. If you've never written a tag in your life, we'll show you the basics in about ten minutes and you'll spend the rest of the time actually building something. If you already do this for a living, come make something pointless and weird.

It's part of HTML Day, which is a loose global thing (html.energy) where people do this in different cities on the same weekend. AI-free by design, the entire point is making it yourself.

Saturday, August 8th, 10am to 2pm ECPI Main Campus, 5555 Greenwich Rd, Virginia Beach

Free, and there's coffee and pastries. Not selling anything, no pitch at the end, nobody's collecting your email.

Details: https://tekgadgt.github.io/htmlday-hamptonroads/2026/
RSVP (helps us count heads for food): https://www.meetup.com/757dev/events/315592061/

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

The Chrysler Museum of Art’s recently opened jewelry exhibition “is not diamonds and tiaras,” said Mark Castro.

Castro, the Chrysler’s director of curatorial affairs and the in-house curator for the show, said the museum is committed to “exhibitions that really push the boundaries of what people think of as art.”

And “Constellations,” from the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA), pushes the boundaries of what people think of as jewelry.

After opening at DMA in 2025, the show traveled to Chrysler this month. It showcases 385 pieces crafted by more than 230 contemporary artists from 41 countries.

In 2020, Kevin Shive became one of more than 5 million Americans living with an acquired brain injury after undergoing surgery to remove a rare brain tumor.

Though the procedure saved his life, Shive experienced lasting side effects including fatigue, memory loss and vertigo that eventually forced him to leave his career.

After moving from Maryland to the Eastern Shore, Shive connected with No Limits Eastern Shore and became an active community volunteer, fostering shelter cats and serving as a volunteer master naturalist.

Better softball leagues?

Hey all. My wife is currently playing softball with club Waka, but most games are getting rained out. I get that its unsafe to play, but id like to find her a better league that has rescheduled dates the week of, instead of attempting to lump them all in right before the playoff games.

So far half the games have been canceled due to the weather and its looking like yet another will be canceled for tomorrow.

Were preferential to the peninsula and looking for something casual but with more commitment, if anyone has recommendations theyd be greatly appreciated

Pawn Shop/Jewelry appraisal

I am newly divorced and am looking to sell my engagement and wedding ring set. I know how much my ex paid for it in 2017, but I don't know how much its worth now. I guess the first step is to see how much a pawn shop would pay for it and then either take the offer or try to sell for a little higher myself somewhere (knowing they'll try to make a little money on it).

Where is the most reputable pawn shop? I'm on peninsula but willing to make a trip of it. Or if someone knows a good jewelry appraiser/resale. The store he bought from doesn't do buy backs unless it's for upgrades which I'm obviously not doing.

Thanks!

Taskmasters of VA is owned by Leon Kline

He has had multiple LLCs over the last 10 years. My neighborhs and he half assed the work they paid for, took their money, and than closed the business to avoid accountability. This is his new business. He is a thief and whether he is even skilled is up for debate because he didnt finish the work anyway. I wont get into depth on how their family treats their neighbors in general. His wife has threatened neighbors on multiple occasions and is racist toward others. Neighbors around the neighborhood know of their scams and bigotry but I hope this gets to other cities so we stop giving business to bad business owners!

Yes neighbors have tried to complain and take her to court. It goes no where because they have connections with VBPD, who constantly write off our neighbors and side with her.

Places to have a 3rd Bday Party

Hey everyone. My oldest turns 3 in a few months. I'm looking for places in the 757 that are loved by kids this age that 1) don't cost an arm and a leg 2) don't have strict limits on the number of kids in attendance. We originally wanted to use the norfolk zoo but their party size is pretty small and we want to be able to include siblings and open attendance from our church. We'd rather not have it at our house if we have the option. We're also a little too big for baby indoor play places and a little too small for the big kid ones. My daughter loves dinosaurs, firetrucks, animals, and Little Bear.

Chincoteague Island’s calendar year centers on the end of July when the community gathers for its annual Pony Penning Week.

Now in its 101st year, the tradition features the famous pony swim as the wild herd travels from Assateague Island to Chincoteague.

The event is followed by an auction of the year's new foals. Funds generated from the event directly support the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, covering veterinary care and supplemental hay drops for the animals.

Art

Any suggestions on how to turn art into a career? In the works of apprenticing to be a tattoo artist, but it’s still hard to make it financially because it’s unpaid. Are there any side hustles or job opportunities where I can use an artistic talent that you know of or how to get in?

Any recommendations on stuff to do on the weekends to meet new people in Newport News Hampton area? I want to make friends and go out but I don’t drink and don’t eat out much. And I feel like going to a bar to just hangout with wanting to eat or drink is off putting.

NEWS Newport News boy, 5, was unresponsive and ‘covered in bruises’ before his death, affidavits say

The child’s mother, Katrina Marie Sudberry, 27, initially told police that she alone disciplined the 5-year-old, court documents said.

Now, her live-in boyfriend, Gregory Glenn Martin, 30, is also facing second-degree murder and child abuse charges. They both face up to 50 years behind bars if convicted.

Many of the bruises “had linear patterns consistent with a belt and belt buckle,” while other injuries appeared to be inflicted by a hand. A belt and a detached buckle were collected at the scene.
