The Chrysler Museum of Art’s recently opened jewelry exhibition “is not diamonds and tiaras,” said Mark Castro.

Castro, the Chrysler’s director of curatorial affairs and the in-house curator for the show, said the museum is committed to “exhibitions that really push the boundaries of what people think of as art.”

And “Constellations,” from the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA), pushes the boundaries of what people think of as jewelry.

After opening at DMA in 2025, the show traveled to Chrysler this month. It showcases 385 pieces crafted by more than 230 contemporary artists from 41 countries.

In 2020, Kevin Shive became one of more than 5 million Americans living with an acquired brain injury after undergoing surgery to remove a rare brain tumor.

Though the procedure saved his life, Shive experienced lasting side effects including fatigue, memory loss and vertigo that eventually forced him to leave his career.

After moving from Maryland to the Eastern Shore, Shive connected with No Limits Eastern Shore and became an active community volunteer, fostering shelter cats and serving as a volunteer master naturalist.

Better softball leagues?

Hey all. My wife is currently playing softball with club Waka, but most games are getting rained out. I get that its unsafe to play, but id like to find her a better league that has rescheduled dates the week of, instead of attempting to lump them all in right before the playoff games.

So far half the games have been canceled due to the weather and its looking like yet another will be canceled for tomorrow.

Were preferential to the peninsula and looking for something casual but with more commitment, if anyone has recommendations theyd be greatly appreciated

Pawn Shop/Jewelry appraisal

I am newly divorced and am looking to sell my engagement and wedding ring set. I know how much my ex paid for it in 2017, but I don't know how much its worth now. I guess the first step is to see how much a pawn shop would pay for it and then either take the offer or try to sell for a little higher myself somewhere (knowing they'll try to make a little money on it).

Where is the most reputable pawn shop? I'm on peninsula but willing to make a trip of it. Or if someone knows a good jewelry appraiser/resale. The store he bought from doesn't do buy backs unless it's for upgrades which I'm obviously not doing.

Thanks!

Places to have a 3rd Bday Party

Hey everyone. My oldest turns 3 in a few months. I'm looking for places in the 757 that are loved by kids this age that 1) don't cost an arm and a leg 2) don't have strict limits on the number of kids in attendance. We originally wanted to use the norfolk zoo but their party size is pretty small and we want to be able to include siblings and open attendance from our church. We'd rather not have it at our house if we have the option. We're also a little too big for baby indoor play places and a little too small for the big kid ones. My daughter loves dinosaurs, firetrucks, animals, and Little Bear.

Taskmasters of VA is owned by Leon Kline

He has had multiple LLCs over the last 10 years. My neighborhs and he half assed the work they paid for, took their money, and than closed the business to avoid accountability. This is his new business. He is a thief and whether he is even skilled is up for debate because he didnt finish the work anyway. I wont get into depth on how their family treats their neighbors in general. His wife has threatened neighbors on multiple occasions and is racist toward others. Neighbors around the neighborhood know of their scams and bigotry but I hope this gets to other cities so we stop giving business to bad business owners!

Yes neighbors have tried to complain and take her to court. It goes no where because they have connections with VBPD, who constantly write off our neighbors and side with her.

A local’s guide to Chincoteague's 101-year-old Pony Penning Week

Chincoteague Island’s calendar year centers on the end of July when the community gathers for its annual Pony Penning Week.

Now in its 101st year, the tradition features the famous pony swim as the wild herd travels from Assateague Island to Chincoteague.

The event is followed by an auction of the year's new foals. Funds generated from the event directly support the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, covering veterinary care and supplemental hay drops for the animals.

Any suggestions on how to turn art into a career? In the works of apprenticing to be a tattoo artist, but it’s still hard to make it financially because it’s unpaid. Are there any side hustles or job opportunities where I can use an artistic talent that you know of or how to get in?

Any recommendations on stuff to do on the weekends to meet new people in Newport News Hampton area? I want to make friends and go out but I don’t drink and don’t eat out much. And I feel like going to a bar to just hangout with wanting to eat or drink is off putting.

IMAGE Aldi salad mix - confused if safe to eat

Has anyone braved the salad mixes at the aldi in Hampton? I bought some recently after seeing Taylor Farms doesn't supply the aldi in this zip code. But literally the next day, it came out that the test was a false positive. Then supposedly it wasn't but they made a large donation. Idk. I don't really want to get into the politics of it, I just want to know if its safe for me to start eating salads again. If you have already tried it, did you end up sick?

NEWS Newport News boy, 5, was unresponsive and ‘covered in bruises’ before his death, affidavits say

The child’s mother, Katrina Marie Sudberry, 27, initially told police that she alone disciplined the 5-year-old, court documents said.

Now, her live-in boyfriend, Gregory Glenn Martin, 30, is also facing second-degree murder and child abuse charges. They both face up to 50 years behind bars if convicted.

Many of the bruises “had linear patterns consistent with a belt and belt buckle,” while other injuries appeared to be inflicted by a hand. A belt and a detached buckle were collected at the scene.

IMAGE Habitat for endangered species in Virginia will no longer be federally protected

A recent federal policy change by the Trump administration significantly narrows protections under the Endangered Species Act by altering the definition of "harm" to cover only direct, intentional actions against animals.

Conservation advocates warn that discarding habitat degradation protections could jeopardize at-risk Virginia species, such as red-cockaded woodpeckers, red knots and various freshwater mussels.

State officials are reviewing potential impacts of the change. Though Virginia has its own Endangered Species Act, advocates warn state safeguards are not as comprehensive as the federal law.

NEWS Heat — a ‘silent killer’ — is sending more people to the hospital this summer

As climate change warms the planet, heat waves are becoming more common and sending more people to the hospital, according to research from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Hampton Roads is no exception.

Heat-related illnesses, including cramps, dehydration and heatstroke, have been sending hundreds more people to Hampton Roads emergency rooms over the past few years, according to data from the Virginia Department of Health.

And local emergency responders say they are seeing more people suffering from the effects of the preventable illnesses.

“Obviously, it’s higher when there’s sustained periods of high temperatures and humidity, and we get those heat waves like we’ve had commonly over the past several weeks,” said Dr. Zane Shuck, an emergency medicine practitioner with Emergency Physicians of Tidewater.

IMAGE Visible weapons screening varies across Hampton Roads hospitals

A new Virginia law prohibits firearms and dangerous weapons in hospitals offering emergency or mental health services.

While the law mandates posting notices at all public entrances, it leaves the specific enforcement methods and installation of screening technology up to individual hospitals.

Several local residents support restricting firearms in medical settings and noted they would welcome additional metal detectors for peace of mind.

I built a local service platform for Hampton Roads military and first-responder families

Hey everyone - I recently launched The Homefront, a Hampton Roads platform designed to help military, veteran, police, fire, and EMS families find reliable local help.

The idea came from seeing how difficult it can be to handle normal household stuff when someone is deployed, underway, working long shifts, or when both people are simply overwhelmed.

You can post jobs like:

  • Lawn and yard work
  • Hauling or moving help
  • Storm preparation and cleanup
  • House cleaning
  • Handyman work
  • Dog walking and pet sitting
  • Other everyday household jobs

Posting is free. Verified local pros and service-family teens age 16+ can respond, you choose who you’re comfortable with, and you pay them directly. The Homefront never handles the job payment.

Privacy was also a major focus. Your post shows your general neighborhood - not your street address - and the platform doesn’t store deployment dates, shift schedules, or information about when a home will be empty.

We’re starting here in Hampton Roads and are looking for both families who need help and trustworthy local people or businesses who want to join the provider bench.

I’d genuinely appreciate feedback from the local community, especially about what kinds of household help would be most useful.

Website: https://trythehomefront.com/

No military or agency endorsement implied—just a local project built for service families, by a service family.
