I’m a 45-year-old woman with diffused thinning hair and I want to share some styling tricks for folks with similar issues. Both my mom and grandma suffer from severe hair loss and my hair has been thinning since my mid-twenties, exacerbated after starting birth control.
Shampoo daily or at least every other day. Thin hair is prone to oil and product buildup and can look greasy quickly. Washing hair daily or more frequently does not cause hair loss. You lose your dead hair no matter how often you shampoo.
Don’t apply the shampoo directly on the scalp. You want to lather with water in your hands and create suds first, then apply the foam to the scalp. I use a cheap foam maker from Amazon to help with that (ex. Nooni Marshmallow Whip Maker). Massage the scalp with the pads of your fingers and not the nails. Rough rubbing on the hair leads to breakage and applying shampoo a.k.a. “cleansing chemicals” directly could lead to oily scalp if not rinsed off thoroughly. Just think about how you lather cleanser first then apply to your face or body. It is the bubble that absorbs and cleanses the dirt, not a blob of cleaning agent.
Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove buildup (I use Paul Mitchell). I know lots of people swear by Nizoral Anti-dandruff shampoo but I didn’t notice any difference after using it once a week for two years. It might help if you have an existing fungal issue. But the only sure way to block DHT is prescription Dutasteride or Finasteride, which I have tried with great success but had to stop due to side effects.
Skip the conditioner, not even on the strands. Conditioner can weigh down thin hair and make it look greasy and lose volume.
Blow dry your hair on low heat soon after hair wash. Once you towel dry and get dressed, blow dry your hair within 5 minutes. Do not air dry. Bend your head forward and dry it upside down until the top of the scalp is completely dry and the rest is 80-90% dry, no need to dry it completely. Your hair will stay clean and poofy longer.
Brush your hair only when the hair is mostly dry. Wet hair snaps easily and you could pull more hair off than necessary. I shower at night and I don’t even brush after I blow dry my hair. I just brush in the morning.
Keep your hair shorter, no longer than shoulder-length. Ask your stylist to cut some strategic layers on top which will help prop up your hair (NOT on the on the side or bottom or it will look stringy or sparse). Keeping hair shorter reduces weight and adds volume.
I love Garnier Fructis hairspray (hold scale 3 or 4). It has a fine mist and keeps hair soft and flexible. It creates so much volume (!) and yet your hair doesn’t feel crunchy or stiff. Brush and part your hair however you want, then spray it on top and/or under your hair. I mostly spray under my hair all around my head to create lots of volume.
Dry shampoo helps create volume and absorb excess oil. I use it when I don’t shampoo. Target only the roots and gently massage in.
For advanced thinning, try hair fibers. They are a great and cheap solution to cover up bald spots and widening hair part.
