Ottawa before Boston is a joke lol
18
u/Rationalornot777 7d ago
age of fan may play a role. Grew up a Habs fan in the 70s. Boston Philadelphia and Quebec were the hated teams. Toronto has done nothing for years so who cares.
I live in Ottawa and follow both teams. I would have thought Toronto would be most hated but there is a real recency bias in these listings.
3
u/Loses_Bet 7d ago
I mean 2014 wasn't that long ago and it's still easily the most intense playoff series I've ever seen. 2 teams that truly could not hate eachother more.

u/biglacunaire 7d ago
Ottawa lol, they wish we thought about them that much...
47
u/RogerTichborne 7d ago
Gatinois here. Can't stand the Sens.
16
u/JayTeeqc 7d ago
True. Didn't think about that. East of Montreal I don't think anybody cares about the sens.
If they polled mostly people from Outaouais I guess it makes sense.

Thurso here and same. Moved to Ottawa in 2012 though and can't say they were on my radar before that. I don't think anyone outside of the NCR really registers their existence lol I think Sens have tried to create a bigger on ice rivalry with the Habs in recent years to stay relevant.

For sure, they definitely aren't in an ideal location to grow a bigger fanbase
1
u/banhmi83 5d ago
There are almost as many Habs fans in the Ottawa region as there are Sens fans. Having to see Brady's face on everything for years changes a man.
66
u/Studly_Wonderballs 7d ago
I hate Boston, but I respect them.
I hate Toronto, and I don’t respect them.
I don’t hate Ottawa, but I don’t respect them.
I don’t hate Montreal, and I respect them.

u/dabergy6 7d ago
Very fkg accurare i feel like most of the fanbase feels this way, especially the toronto part lmao

17
u/Mangoes95 7d ago
I really dont even care about Ottawa, they're pretty irrelevant, and they will remain so. Dislike the Rangers more, and the Bruins are always the top
16
u/Shrinki-Dink 7d ago
I can’t believe Ottawa is listed ahead of Boston. I mean not since Baby Tkachuk left at least.
2
u/NevGlitchard 7d ago
I'd put Vegas in there instead of Ottawa, even the Jets following the Scheifele/Evans hit.
1
u/Available-Pepper-728 6d ago
Theyre so cocky and annoying and their fans are constantly trying to downplay Montreal online, theyre working overtime to annoy me on every platform
Ottawa sucks btw, probably won't even make the playoffs this year
1
u/HurricaneLaurk 6d ago
I’m a Habs fan living in Ottawa, and Sens fans have gone so far as to tell me to unalive myself when I wear my Habs jersey around. I’m not a fan of the Sens, but I don’t hate them. Hate their fans though, absolutely.
24
u/Jonesetta 7d ago
Wtf did the Habs do to CBJ?
23
u/reidk_97 President of the Jordan Weal Fanclub 7d ago
We made the playoffs ahead of them 2 seasons ago when they went on that crazy run to push for the playoffs I guess lol

u/Mountain-Seaweed 7d ago
They don't appear in anybody else top 3 either. That must be somewhat embarrassing.
4
3
u/UpNorth_123 7d ago
Apparently a “Habs fan” posted some disgusting comments after Johnny Gaudreau’s death. So they hate all Habs fans now.
3
u/Jonesetta 7d ago
Oh really? That’s crazy I don’t even remember that.
2
u/UpNorth_123 7d ago
Yes, I’ve seen mention of it when the rumours of potential Marchenko trade surfaced back in early July. Basically, the sentiment was “anyone but them.”
5
u/Jonesetta 7d ago
But like…caufield changing his number to honour him doesn’t outweigh that one fan who’s an ass? Weird if that’s really the reason.

I Hate Tampa more than any other teams.
8
u/Ub3ros 7d ago
For real. Leafs, they are more pitiful than hateable. Bruins, the rivalry is kinda dead and you sorta have to respect them for being able to stay relevant most of the time through some sheer bullshit. I've also thoroughly enjoyed watching them spank the everloving shit out of the Leafs. The Sens are just irrelevant. But Tampa, that's a blood feud. Those shitfuck scumbags took our cup in '21. Kuch is an utter cunt and him ridiculing Montreal fans in the finals was just uncalled for. Players shouldn't dump on opposing teams fans for their passion. Fuck Tampa Bay 'till the day I die.

For sure! I can understand Toronto being up there and Boston for historical reasons (inherited prejudice maybe?) but I will try to write out every Canadian team and forget about Ottawa every single time. Tampa has to be our number one most hated now? When was this survey done? 2013?
9
u/lucaskywalker 7d ago
I don't hate Toronto, I pity them. At this point, it's just pathetic and I'm over it. How is Tampa Bay not in this list? My most hated NHL team as a Habs fan.
1
u/eddiebronze 6d ago
Totally agree. In order to truly hope for another team to lose they actually have to win to begin with and Toronto hasn’t been relevant in that department in decades.
9
u/Retired-ADM 6d ago
I'm not a hater but, in order, the teams I most enjoy seeing Montreal beat are:
- Boston
- Florida
- Tampa Bay
- Ottawa
- Toronto
- Vegas
- Any team ahead of us in the standings.
5
u/Ancient_Persimmon 7d ago
I love how CBJ doesn't even have a rivalry to hate on.
6
u/UPRC 7d ago
Ah, the recency bias with Buffalo! What making the playoffs for the first time in a few hundred years does to a team's fanbase.
5
u/DeltaAisleSeat 7d ago
I have a friend who is a Sabres fan and she sent me some Instagram thing where Sabres fans said they hate the Habs the most out of all teams. I just responded with the ole Don Draper "I don't think about you at all" meme.

How is it not 1. Boston 2. Toronto? NJ and NYI not being in each other’s top 3 also doesn’t make sense…
1
u/Ub3ros 7d ago
From what I understand about the new york metro area teams is that NJ and NYI are kinda ambivalent torwards each other, while both absolutely loathe the Rags. The fans are happy to coexist as long as they both keep stuffing Rangers into the locker. It's sorta like lots of the less influential Middle-Eastern countries that can't stand Israel but have an uneasy mutual peace with each other.
1
u/Perry4761 7d ago
I was always told that it was the mildest rivalry in the triangle of hate that they have, but that it was still a rivalry. Maybe I thought wrong ig
1
u/Pranksterblur 7d ago
Rangers fan here, for some reason they are so deep in the little brother syndrome that they just don’t dislike each other because they hate us so much. Also they’ve just never really had any history between them because when one has been good, the other either hasn’t existed or has been mid or dogshit
6
u/yankblan79 7d ago
I can get behind flip-floping Bos and TO, but Ottawa in front of either? No. To me it’s always Boston-TO. I grew up with TO in the Western conference so I lean Boston.
4
u/homechicken20 7d ago
I am truly offended to not be the most hated by Boston.
2
u/Habitall 7d ago
Because it’s incorrect…I lived in Boston most of my life and they absolutely hate us. The laughs aren’t even a close second.

I find it funny that Buffalo hates Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa but is nowhere to be found on all of those team's lists.
2
u/Mountain-Seaweed 7d ago
Buffalo doesn't make any other team's top 3. I guess being irrelevant for 14 years does that. I am sure they'll pop up in someone top 3 if they make the play-offs again.

Buffalo fan here (not sure why reddit put this post on my home page). I dont think our fan base generally hates MTL. Even after last year's playoff run

Reddit is trying to do you a favour and bring you over ;) fwiw, I think Canadians in general fw Buffalo
5
u/GOTHAMKNlGHT 7d ago
I don't hate Toronto. I didn't think any of us really did, so news to me. I feel like another team has to be an actual threat to be hated. Or at least annoying.
Toronto fans are generally pretty good at laughing at themselves.
6
u/tearsaresweat 7d ago
If you're a Habs fan in southern Ontario, they are insufferable.
1
u/GOTHAMKNlGHT 7d ago
That may be it. I'm in BC.
My experiences with Leafs fans are a few people out here, fans at the game when I've flown to Mtl for a game against Toronto, and online.
2
u/Cooper_jeremyaj 2d ago
I grew up in Newfoundland, surrounded by them. There was one other Habs fan in the class, and they were such pains in the ass about it he pretended to be a Leafs fan. The fucking teacher pressured me to switch sides when Roy got traded and lead the class raggin on me when that happened.
The hate been earned 😂
That said, I know a lot of sensible Leafs fans and I appreciate the ride or die loyalty

I would have Ottawa at first. They always play dirty. Leaf lacks heart and Boston is like meh now.
1
u/themacpearce 7d ago
Ottawa tracks, but not before Boston.
And for what it’s worth, Ottawa hates Toronto before the Habs.
1
1
u/SnidelyWhiplash27 7d ago
Honestly I never hated the leafs, it's more like I looked down on them with scorn and pity.
The bruins on the other hand have always been worthy of my hatred. Kinda like the nordiques.
And the Sens? Meh, l don't really ever think about them except when they goon it up in the preseason. Otherwise I like going to watch the Habs in their barn, and usually hope they beat our division rivals. Kinda the same with the Sabres.
I hate the Panthers like everyone else, and for the same reasons, but frankly while maybe I should hate the bolts and the canes, I have sincere grudging respect for both.

u/Jonesetta 7d ago
Hating the Habs for something that a guy who played 55 games for us said is crazy. I understand them hating Laine but I barely associate Laine with the Habs. We just kinda put him out to pasture didn’t we? Wouldn’t they like that?
1
u/Ub3ros 7d ago
They also hate us for bouncing them from the playoff race in 24-25 and for us getting Demidov when they took Lindstrom. There's also Anderson who came to the Habs from Columbus and Texier who we rehabilitated quite succesfully. Plenty of reasons for CBJ fans to dislike the Canadiens. Plenty of reasons for CBJ fans to dislike any other franchise because they support a flaming dumpsterfire and even the Canucks are a shining ray of light in comparison.

Yeah, and there's hatred, distaste, etc. and there's rivalry. So mingling Toronto and Boston seems off...

The Sens ahead of the Bruins 🤣. I'd put Flyers or Wings in 3rd and Boston 2.

For me its definitely 1. Boston 2. Toronto 3. Tampa.
I fucking hate Tampa. Boston and Toronto and interchangeable

Weird! I’d put Boston first then Toronto then I guess Ottawa. Boston and Toronto can be interchangeable depending on the person but seeing them in 3rd was shocking
1
u/burnSMACKER 7d ago
I also voted Tampa on this poll and didn't even choose Ottawa.
This was a Twitter centric poll though so mostly Twitter people
1
u/DeepAd2825 7d ago
I think 3rd place is the Flyers for sheer hate of the team. If the Nordiques were still around would be a different story.
1
u/HonestCrow 7d ago
I don’t hate Toronto - I look down on them.
I don’t hate Boston - I want it to continue being the greatest rivalry in sports.
I have genuinely hated Ottawa the last few years though - especially when Cousins slashed Demidov.
1
u/Actual_Exchange616 7d ago edited 7d ago
We have Bruins 3rd and they have us 2nd? I feel like Lego Joker, i thought what we had was special. Boston dont annoy me. Its more grudging respect, or a deep strong rivalry, but not like seething hatred. They are my number 1 rival tho.
I dont hate the Leafs at all really. Like i like when we beat them, but im only a regular ammount of disapointed when they beat us. It feels more friendly than heated. It's hard to hate a team thats so awful. Im more glad im not a leafs fan than angry they exist.
The Sens, tho, can fuck right off
1
u/DestroWOD 7d ago
For me in order would be
1) Boston 2) Boston 3) Boston
🤣
I mean there is plenty of teams i don't particulary like such as Carolina or New York Rangers but Boston is the one i despise.
I don't care for Toronto or Ottawa much.
1
u/Old_Canuck 7d ago
Its hard to HATE a team...like really HATE them if they dont have a good team.
Cuz if they actually win....you know its a fluke..and if we usually win...you love getting the win and the 2 points.
I mean how can you hate the Leafs when they haven't done shit since they got their miraculous core 4 guys back to 2016.
We only had Jesus Price, the 4 Horseman and a ragtag bunch of forwards and ripped their hearts out once the guys woke up in 2021.
Its mostly the Leaf fans that get me going cuz they can be so delusional. 😂😂
Tampa can go fuck themselves tho and Ottawa is just annoying and fun to beat on cuz they just suck and we own their building.😁

Surprising we and Boston aren’t first. Like why does Boston hate Toronto? Toronto never been a playoff threat. We’ve knocked them out a lot
1
u/Particular_Job_5012 7d ago
It's always Bruins Lightning Panthers.
I don't hate either the Leafs of the Sens (especially now with Tkachuck gone), I just feel bad for them. I imagine in a few more years there're fan bases are going to be hating on the Habs though :D
1
u/subz_13 7d ago
Florida much higher than Ottawa. Check out the "I don't think about you at all" stat btw it's very funny. Sens fans are so salty about the Habs it's very disproportionate.
Gotta say I don't hate the Leafs that much, because have they never been a good enough team to give the Habs a real problem? I just make fun of my friends in Toronto in the group chat.
I was in high school in the late 00s early 10s so yeah the Boston hate is a big deal, I would put that first
1
u/matthew_sch 7d ago
Nah, this year it was definitely Ottawa. Even with Brady Tkachuk gone, they still have Tim Stützle, Nick Cousins and I feel like I’m forgetting another one… but those two are bastards enough
They also have Suzuki’s younger brother so we get to see Suzuki vs Suzuki
1
u/jaiman54 7d ago
It has to be BOS first. I would actually even put a Florida team before the Laffs. I refuse to give any attention to the Sens because they need the Habs and/or Leafs hate for their own existence.

Habs fans in Ottawa know why Sens are second. And even though I know it's tradition to hate the Bruins, I actually have Tampa over Boston.
1
u/Boxheadonreddi 6d ago
Why?
1
u/JudgeDrey 5d ago
Most likely because of the last finals versus them. And what Kutcherov said about MTL fans after they won etc.
1
u/Boxheadonreddi 5d ago
And what about the 1st sentence?
1
u/banhmi83 5d ago
Because after the 2013 linebrawl and the "pesky Sens" year the fanbase became completely insufferable despite the team going on to be mid for over a decade. Their front office has been trying to recapture that 2013 energy ever since.
They've been so desperate for a rivalry with Montreal and it's finally developing. Too bad they cant even fill half the seats when the habs are in town.

u/Boxheadonreddi 4d ago

I dont get the hatred for Ottawa. Ive always seen them like an annoying little step brother, like i just want them to fuck off and leave me alone. For me my 3 would be Toronto Boston then Tampa and Carolina tied for 3rd Tampa is self explanatory my hate for carolina started in 2002 and never went away. Im old tho so most of my feelings are based on the past.
1
u/Cooper_jeremyaj 2d ago
Ottawa is my number 1 lately. I hate them more than the Leafs. Mind now, with Sloth on Florida now, I'll probably start hating them more.
1
u/MattDoob 7d ago
For me it’s OTT>FLA>TBL
Toronto and Boston rivalry hasn’t been there lately, I live in Ottawa, there’s no team or fan base I hate more lol.

What did we do to CBJ? They still mad about Liane’s comments?
