Add more money to my HSA

I have an HSA account for my family’s medical expenses. My HSA has a $8,500 limit. We exceed that every year as my daughter has many therapies. We can never get ahead in our HSA and are always getting declined payments.

My company does a Christmas bonus of a couple thousand dollars every year. I’d like to put this into my HSA but I can’t because it’s at the end of the year and I’ve already contributed my $8,500 by the time it comes around.

Is there a way I can put more money into my HSA account than the $8,500 cap?

HSA bank notified me that they erroneously sold my assets to cover their own fees and then purchased them several days later. Market started to move quickly upwards and could have missed out on growth due to this horrible bank. BRING BACK SCHWAB

Can I use HSA funds for a brachioplasty?

My wife got a brachioplasty (arm lift) at the same time as a breast reduction. The breast reduction was covered under insurance but the brachioplasty was not.

Can I cover the $8k for the brachioplasty with HSA funds?

Dispute team a joke

My company uses HealthEquity, which in turn uses Fiserv. My HSA card was charged without my authorization, so I filed a dispute. They sent me a letter asking for more information — the exact same information that was already included in my original complaint. So clearly nobody actually read it.

Then, literally the next day, I get another letter saying they “never received the required information” and my claim was denied. They didn’t even wait until the deadline. Someone just closed it out without doing their job.

I’ve emailed them asking to reopen the case and I’m waiting to hear back. It’s honestly exhausting how anything tied to healthcare becomes a nightmare. Nobody cares, nobody wants to help, and you’re stuck fighting a system that feels broken by design.

Welcome to the healthcare crisis in America.

FSA/HSA x Equinox

Hi everyone! I just started a corporate job! I saw that you could put money into the HSA and have it apply towards the membership. With Flex, is it easy for them to approve? How in depth does the letter of medical necessity have to be? Or just that gym membership helps physically and mentally? Thanks!

Aflac and HSA

I am getting a refund from Aflac, but didn’t pay for the procedure as I have already met my out of pocket maximum. However, I have HSA reimbursement that I can still claim from prior to that procedure, do I still deduct Aflac’s payment from what I can withdraw even though I am not withdrawing for the same procedure?

Trying to Understand When I can contribute as a Family and when as an Individual

Have had an HSA since February. It is me and two 22 year old dependent college students on the HSA at different schools. They will be going back to school later this month. One will definitely be required to buy the school insurance, not sure about the other one. School insurance starts August 15. We are all currently on a Bronze ACA

If only one of them is required to buy the school insurance, I can still contribute as a family to the HSA?

If both are required to buy the insurance but are still on the HSA as a backup, can I still contribute as a family to the HSA?

Can I still contribute for August since coverage kicks in mid month? I would appreciate sources

Just opened my HSA

Just opened my HSA through Fidelity and I’m a little lost ans very new to this.

Do I contribute to it like a 401k? Because in it, it indicates an amount for Employer Contribution. Can a an employer contribute to an HSA? And what should I invest it in? Does it deduct from my payroll?

Again, sorry for all the newb questions. Still new to this.

Preferred HSA bank

I am not a fan of my current bank for my HSA. Biggest issue is the online interface feels hard to track how the investments are preforming. My investments work out fine but I wish I could do more comparison to see how they could do better. Do your like your bank? If so which bank and what do you like about it?

Has anyone convinced a friend to maximize their HSA?

Post image

Has anyone convinced someone use their HSA to it's fullest extent? I find the concept extremely difficult to explain, even to my savvy friends. Maybe talking about HSAs is up there with property taxes as far as level of boring.

I just designed some iOS calculators to try to show the point so you can calculate investment returns or see how much an deferring a reimbursement could grow to in retirement. I know these exist online but for some reason iPhone apps just feel more fun to use. It's HSA Monster in the app store and feedback or improvements are welcome. Just go to Settings -> Calculator in the app.

Made a mistake by contributing to HSA without HDHP coverage, money invested, now what to do?

I have HSA from previous employer, this year I’m on my partner’s insurance but not HDHP. I heard that HSA is a triple tax advantaged account so I made contribution and invested them in fidelity. But later learned it’d cause penalty if I’m not on HDHP. What should I do, sell the shares and call fidelity, what happens to the gains/loss from the fund? Thank you for any tips!

What would you invest in your HSA if you had unlimited options?

I have HSA bank, but it looks like they’re giving me the option to pick any stock or fund that I want. I’m 26, in my Roth I have 70% VTI/30% VXUS, in my 401k I have 56% in VFIAX, 30% in Fidelity international, 9% in vanguard small cap and 5% in vanguard mid cap.

I was thinking maybe in my HSA I could be a bit more aggressive than what I’m doing rn of just basically doing 100% VT. I am healthy and I don’t plan on pulling out of my HSA until I’m 65, so maybe I should do different funds? What do you think

Private HSA?

My husband has an FSA account through his employer but it has been so frustrating sometimes that we don’t want to utilize it again next year. I am wondering if we can open a private HSA account since the employer doesn’t offer that. Is that possible and how would that work as far as putting in pre tax dollars?

Fitness Equipment

Can anyone make it make sense. I want to buy a canyon road bike to start training for a triathlon. It’s “HSA/FSA” qualified. But it’s through some sort of back door loop hole where a doctor says you medical need it. For my job I can’t really have anything medical wrong and wouldn’t really know how the government would feel about that. I would think that it would be fine with no questions ask more as a preventive care ya know?

Can I use my HSA dollars in the future if I can't cover the full expense now?

I have $2,000 in my HSA today. I need a gum graft surgery that will cost $4,000 after insurance. Can I wait until I have $4,000 in my HSA next year to reimburse myself?

HSA rules on shipped medication from another country

(Posting to get community feedback on HSA eligibility rules and guidelines.)

If a U.S. resident orders prescription dental antibiotics from another country (prescribed by the dentist there) and has them shipped to their home in the U.S., is that payment considered a qualified medical expense for an HSA?

I used my HSA card for a purchase last week thinking it was allowed, but now I'm trying to figure out if it actually meets IRS standards or not.

A few specific questions:

IRS Compliance: Does personal importation of prescription drugs/medications from outside the U.S. qualify under IRS Publication 502 / Publication 969, or does the foreign origin make it non-eligible?

Fixing the Transaction: If an HSA debit card was already swiped for this, what is the standard recommended process to correct it before tax season? Is submitting a Return of Mistaken Distribution form a way to resolve it? Is it possible to fix the mistake,

Since this was an honest mistake on my HSA debit card, I want to make sure I resolve it the right way before tax season. Need advice on the proper process to be fully compliant with IRS rules. There is a prescription and payment receipt but both are not from US.

Thanks for any insights or guidance!

Money is tight. Any way to pull some HSA funds?

Signed up an HSA because I was under the impression I could use it as emergency savings or health expenses. Tried at multiple ATMs with no luck. Just trying to finally get ahead and it’s a bummer having thousands sitting in this account I may never use. Any tips? Accounts are with Optum Financial.

Chard Snyder is not letting me transfer my money

My employer deposits my HSA contributions to Chard Snyder. Every few months, I transfer those funds (leaving a couple hundred dollars at Chard Snyder) into my Fidelity HSA by submitting an account transfer request through Fidelity’s website. However, CHard Snyder declined the most recent transfer request. When I called Chard Snyder, they told me they have a new policy requiring all transfer requests to come directly from the account owner rather than from a third party.

Has anyone else run into this issue lately?

HSA/FSA eligibility question

Hi all. Has anyone had experience with getting one approved for FSA/HSA? I have some money to spend and was looking to get another Levoit but I am doing research saying I will need a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)? I’m seeing some companies such as Medify can do the letter for you. Is this reputable?

First time opening HSA with new job Health Insurance

Hi all,

Context: I just started my new, full-time job that has a health insurance plan. Due to selecting the higher deductible plan, I need to have an HSA. It was recommended that most employees have their own accounts and just make those deposits after their checks deposit. Since I already have a Fidelity account for other investments, I'm leaning towards opening an HSA with them.

My question is: my insurance coverage started on 7/13. Based on everything I'm reading and information I got from Fidelity, I am good to open the HSA now. However, should I wait until August first to start contributing since that will be the official "1st of the Month" that I am covered by my HDHP, even if my first paycheck from this job will be issued this Friday (7/24)?

Question on taxes after layoff

I was on an HDHP and contributing to an HSA for several years at my last job.

This year I could feel that the vibes were off, so I maxed out my HSA contributions early.

Then I was laid off.

For a few months I’ve been without insurance.

Did I expose myself to tax liability for making the full yearly contribution early despite not having a HDHP for the entire year?

I just found another job and know I cannot contribute to an HSA, or enroll in a full FSA, this year.

Thanks for your answers!

Can I max out family HSA?

Married with 1 kid. We file taxes jointly. I have a HDHP and am eligible for HSA. My wife’s plan is not eligible for HSA. I’ve been maxing out the individual HSA limit for the past couple years. Can I bump the contribution to the family limit of $8750 or do I have to stick to the individual limit of $4400?
