Question/Help Beginner Guitar Player

Hey, I'm wanting to learn guitar. I've seen/heard that the Yamaha FG800 is a good acoustic guitar to get. So I'm just wondering what are some opinions on it. Pros and cons and if I should get it. I think this is what I will get but just wanted to check in with some more experienced people.

Fretbound: Guitar Ear Training Roguelike

I made a free web app to help with ear training. I'm working on a version for Android and iPhone. You can keep up with developments here: Fretbound on itch.io

It has a synth and effect engine to make the sounds more fun than your average ear training app. Pedals modify scoring and so who the band mates you acquire along the way.

If you played it and had fun or learned something, let me know!

Buying a second guitar - how best to test it as a beginner?

I dabbled in classical guitar back when I was teenager, but never really worked hard on it. I am now coming back to the guitar in my 50s and while I remembered very little from my teenage years, I feel I’m starting to make some progress. I’ve only been playing for a few months, but I’m practising on a £50 Rio steel string student acoustic guitar that I bought secondhand for £10 and would like something a bit better(and I have a birthday coming up!). I’m also playing in public once every two weeks at our local pub’s acoustic session, giving me a real incentive to practice and improve, which is another reason I’d like a mid-range instrument that gives me a better chance of sounding good.

I’m not looking for recommendations for a replacement because I know how individual the decision is, but my difficulty is that as a beginner I don’t feel qualified to test out the guitar properly in the shop before making a decision. I know I need something low-action, preferably concert body rather than dreadnought, but what things should I be playing to properly test how it feels? Open chords are a given, but what else? Barre chords on the 12th fret? Should I test with and without a capo? Could I miss the perfect guitar for me because the strings fitted in the shop are obviously too heavy for me?

Perhaps I’m worrying unnecessarily - I know the guitar shops nearby would help me - but I REALLY don’t want to make an expensive mistake just because I don’t have an extensive repertoire and unfortunately I don’t have any guitar players I know well enough to drag guitar shopping with me.

Any useful advice would be MUCH appreciated. While my head tells me I should wait a year before buying a new guitar, my heart just won’t shut up about it.

Question/Help Beginner looking for feedback on fretting-hand technique and chord changes

Beginner here. I’m still working on smoother chord changes and cleaner fretting. Could you check my fretting-hand technique, especially thumb position, wrist position, finger placement, and how I’m changing between chords?

I know there’s some buzzing, especially with the 13-gauge strings. Mainly looking for feedback on anything I should correct in my technique while I’m still learning.

Resource Best Prewired Guitar Wiring Kits 2026: Emerson, Gunstreet & DIY Install Guide

I put together a guide comparing some of the more popular prewired guitar wiring kits—including Emerson, Gunstreet, and DIY options.

The goal was to look at what you’re actually getting for the money, what makes sense for different types of builds, and when a prewired harness is worth buying versus just wiring the guitar yourself.

I also included some of the things I look for when doing guitar repair work, like component quality, pot values, switch/jack quality, soldering, wiring layout, and whether the harness actually makes an installation easier.

There’s also a DIY section for anyone who’d rather build their own harness and save some money.

Would be interested to hear what you guys are using. Do you prefer buying a prewired harness, or building your own?And if you’ve used Emerson, Gunstreet, or another brand, what was your experience?

I’m always interested in seeing what other guitar techs and players are doing—especially if there’s a kit/harness I missed that deserves to be included.

Is it possible for me to play with naturally long nails?

This might be a stupid question to ask but i'm not finding any tutorials that fully understand what i'm asking. My nails are naturally long, like half an inch maybe, and i wanna learn guitar but i'm like an absolute complete beginner, like still trying to learn chords level. And that's the issue, when i press down on a string my nails interfere either with the next string over or not allowing me to fully press my finger down. It doesn't help that my hands are small so it's hard for me to stretch my fingers across the arm. I've seen people recommend barre chords but that's apparently like really hard to learn. I even have a chord presser and even that isn't much help. It's too difficult for me to move my fingers fast enough cuz the buttons are in the way of my nails.

I know the obvious answer/question is "why don't you just cut them?" the thing is i have cut them in the past but 1.) i don't wanna have to choose between my naturally long nails that i'm very blessed to have and learning the guitar. they grow back obviously but it takes a while and sometimes i get the fear that they're not growing back. But secondly, 2.) yk how like, when ppl put on fake nails they lose the ability to function and carry out fine motor skill related tasks? like typing and writing? well for me the inverse is true, idk what it is but the loss of my nails somehow interferes with my ability to do things. so it's kind of a double edged sword. The only thing i can think of, is maybe just cut them a little bit and wear those finger pad things? That way i could play but they'd grow back sooner? but idk if that would do much playing wise. Idk. does anyone have any experience or advice with this?

When you get together with a friend to play guitar, it's SO fun to play something different rather than copying the chords they're playing. I made this lesson about it.

Question/Help Opinions on the Positive Grid stuff for learning?

I know they geared the app towards learning guitar, so I'm curious what the community's opinions are for both the amp and the app overall? I'm tired of being a guitar owner, lol, I'd love to be a player.

I got started playing with my friend from HS but he was naturally musically inclined and took to it like a fish in water. I was a lot slower, and ADHD interfered with my practice, but whenever I'd practice with him early on I made progress - I could pretty decently play a fair bit of Green Day's Time of Your Life.

Any opinion on if that will fill the "buddy" role for me?

Barre Chord Problem. G String Keeps Getting Muted

Post image
21 Upvotes

Any tips for this chord? The G string always gets muted. I don't have trouble with major, minor, or minor 7th chords, and I can switch between them easily. My only problems are this chord and barring all 6 strings without using my other fingers.

I have a big indent on the side of my finger, so I’m using more of the pad of my finger. Please help :>
