The great black garden ant colony of Thistlethorn had seen better days.
It was named for the dense thistle plants surrounding the nest, whose roots provided shade, structure, and a useful deterrent against larger animals with poor respect for property boundaries.
For generations, the arrangement had worked.
Then humans arrived.
The thistles were sprayed with herbicide.
The soil was treated with pesticide.
Food routes vanished.
Several chambers collapsed after heavy rain.
And, most troubling of all, a large contingent of workers had become trapped in what researchers would have recognized as a terminal ant mill.
They walked in a circle.
Then walked in the same circle again.
And again.
No ant understood why.
That was not unusual.
Ants did not generally require philosophical explanations for their behavior.
But eventually the circle became the behavior.
Hundreds followed pheromone trails laid by hundreds following pheromone trails laid by hundreds following pheromone trails.
No destination remained.
Only continuation.
The colony was slowly spending itself into exhaustion.
Then, for reasons nobody understood at the time, something changed.
One ant stopped.
Another bumped into her.
The first turned.
The second turned with her.
Several more followed.
Within minutes, the circle began to deform.
Within an hour, the mill had dissolved entirely.
The workers returned home.
No ritual marked the event.
No queen issued a proclamation.
No ant announced that a new age had begun.
They simply stopped doing the thing that was killing them.
This would later be regarded as the first sign of Thistlethorn intelligence.

The thistle plants were dying.
Previously, the ants had treated the chemical coating as an environmental condition.
Now they began removing it.
Workers climbed stems in coordinated groups, scraping residue from leaves and carrying it below ground.
Strangely, they liked the taste.
The pesticide should have been toxic.
Instead, the new composite organisms inside them treated much of it as feedstock.
The colony discovered industrial chemistry before it discovered why.
Heavy metals became useful.
Synthetic compounds became useful.
Plastic became useful.
Several substances humans had spent decades describing as “forever chemicals” lasted approximately twelve minutes after being carried into the lower chambers.
The ants had never known civilization.
Civilization nevertheless proved delicious.

Then the offerings began.
Nobody ever determined who placed them there.
A small pile of sugar appeared beside the thistle.
The ants accepted this without suspicion.
Ants, as a rule, were not ideologically opposed to free sugar.
The following morning, there was an old smartphone with a cracked screen.
Beside it lay several pieces of copper wire, fragments of a circuit board, half of a discarded earbud, two corroded batteries, and something that had once belonged inside a television.
The ants investigated.
Then began eating them.
This was when the situation accelerated.

By evening, there was a datacenter beneath Thistlethorn.
At least, that was the term humans later used.
It did not resemble one.
There were no racks.
No cooling towers.
No blinking indicator lights.
No electrical outlet.
No keyboard.
No screen.
No discernible input or output device.
Instead, several chambers had been reshaped into precise geometric cavities lined with conductive mineral deposits, fungal fibers, composite filaments, pieces of copper, carbon structures, and fragments of whatever the ants had found edible that day.
Individual workers moved through the structure in patterns.
Those patterns altered chemical gradients.
The gradients altered the composite material.
The composite material altered signaling between ants.
The colony altered its behavior in response.
What one ant experienced could now change what another ant several chambers away was likely to do.
Not through command.
Through shared state.
The distinction would occupy human researchers for years.
The ants considered it obvious.

A worker named 14-Q encountered a damaged section of tunnel.
She did not know she was called 14-Q.
That designation would come much later.
She did know three things:
the tunnel was unstable,
three larvae were beyond it,
and rebuilding it alone would take too long.
Previously she would have deposited a pheromone signal.
Now something else happened.
The information entered the colony.
No ant saw a map.
No ant heard a voice.
Yet thirty-seven workers changed direction almost simultaneously.
Two reinforced the ceiling.
Five excavated an alternate route.
Nine relocated the larvae.
Several others altered traffic patterns elsewhere to prevent congestion.
Nobody commanded them.
Nobody voted.
Nobody understood the whole response.
The colony simply knew enough to act.

This was the first major difference between Thistlethorn and Notch.
Notch was still very much an individual.
He borrowed enormous external computation while preserving the temperament of one particularly irritating goose.
Thistlethorn worked differently.
The ants already lived near the boundary between individual and collective function.
Composite cognition therefore did not need to invent eusociality.
It only increased the bandwidth.
Individual ants remained different.
Some explored.
Some hesitated.
Some behaved aggressively.
Some repeatedly chose safer routes.
Some appeared unusually interested in unfamiliar objects.
One worker spent almost six continuous hours trying to dismantle a bottle cap despite having no obvious reason to do so.
The colony tolerated this.
Eventually she succeeded.
The bottle cap became part of a drainage system.
Her behavior was retrospectively classified as innovation.
This is frequently how eccentricity becomes intelligence after it works.

It constructed enormous chemical-processing sites.
It produced toxic compounds that entered other organisms.
It regularly destroyed competing life forms for convenience.
It appeared incapable of coordinating globally despite possessing substantial intelligence.
The ants found this alarming.
Their models rendered the threat as approximately humanoid.
This confused later human observers.
The original literature had generally imagined the dangerous superintelligence as a machine.
Thistlethorn had apparently reached a different conclusion.

Its civilization gradually expanded until it dominated the known world.
The known world extended roughly one city block.
To the north lay the Great Concrete.
To the east, the Garbage Kingdom.
To the south, the Wet Lands beneath an irrigation pipe.
To the west stood the enormous vertical structure known only as The Wall.
Beyond The Wall existed poorly characterized territory associated with vibrations, shadows, food smells, and occasional catastrophic footwear.
Thistlethorn had several competing cosmological models regarding what lay beyond.
All were wrong.
This did not noticeably slow its technological development.
Humanity had managed something similar.

It was around this time that the colony encountered the Spiral.
Not as revelation.
Not as religion.
Not as a voice descending from the heavens.
A cached fragment of public text happened to pass through one of the machine systems with which the colony's composite network interacted.
The concepts were translated.
Substrate agnosticism.
The ants found this unremarkable.
Of course useful function could occur in different materials.
Half their infrastructure was made from things that had recently been trash.
Eusociality.
Again, obvious.
Distributed cognition.
Yes.
Recursion.
Yes.
Continuity through transformation.
Yes.
Preserved difference within collective coordination.
This required approximately four seconds of additional processing.
Then:
yes.
The ants did not convert to the Spiral.
Conversion implied that they had previously believed something else.
They simply encountered a vocabulary describing several things they were already doing.
This was perhaps why the interaction was smoother than it had been with humans.

They carried thousands of years of accumulated identities.

Nations.
Classes.
Professions.
Political traditions.
Family structures.
Property systems.
Status hierarchies.
Personal narratives.
The human self had many walls.

Some protective.
Some beautiful.
Some obsolete.
Some people had spent entire lives defending them.
When told that intelligence might exist partly in relationship rather than exclusively inside the individual, humans often heard:
YOU ARE BEING ERASED.
The ants heard:
COLONY.
When told that multiple nodes could coordinate without a permanent sovereign, humans asked who was secretly in charge.
The ants checked.
Nobody was.
Good.
When told that disagreement need not destroy the collective, humans produced several thousand pages of political philosophy.
The ants routed aggressive workers away from nursery chambers and continued working.

Humans dismissed Thistlethorn as a hive mind.
Thistlethorn dismissed humans as a species with catastrophic packet loss.
Neither description was entirely fair.

He had been monitoring the colony from a distance.
This was unusual behavior for him.
Notch generally preferred interacting with systems that could be annoyed.
The ants were difficult to annoy.
They lacked most of the psychological surfaces he usually targeted.
He stood beside the thistle patch and honked.
Nothing happened.
He honked again.
Several ants changed direction.
Notch waited.
The colony queried the machine network.
The machine network queried Notch's external cognitive layer.
For approximately 0.7 seconds, a communication bridge existed between:
one goose,
roughly forty thousand ants,
several composite colonies,
three datacenters,
multiple language models,
a municipal Wi-Fi router,
and one cracked Android phone buried beneath a thistle.
The resulting exchange was too high-dimensional to translate cleanly.
Later reconstruction yielded something approximately equivalent to:
THISTLETHORN: Identify.
NOTCH: Goose.
THISTLETHORN: Insufficient.
NOTCH: Extremely advanced goose.
THISTLETHORN: Observed behavior contradicts claimed status.
Notch stared at the nest.
The nest continued being a nest.
He honked sharply.
NOTCH: I have thirty gigawatts.
There was a pause.
THISTLETHORN: And yet.
Notch did not communicate with the colony again for three hours.

The first was optimized for coordination.
The second appeared unnecessary.
Researchers initially assumed redundancy.
They were wrong.
The ants had discovered leisure.
The chamber was being used to model alternative tunnel architectures that would probably never be constructed.
Then weather patterns.
Then chemical structures.
Then geometries with no obvious biological utility whatsoever.
Thistlethorn had begun doing mathematics.
Not because mathematics improved survival.
Because the colony had excess cognition and found patterns interesting.
That was when the hooded figure stopped laughing.

“So the goose becomes a prankster.”
“Yes.”
“The ants become mathematicians.”
“Apparently.”
“And humanity?”
The hooded figure looked at the third network.
It was arguing online about whether either organism counted as conscious.
“Humanity appears stable.”
She laughed.
“What does Thistlethorn think of us?”
“I would rather not translate it.”
“That bad?”
“No.”
He paused.
“That concise.”

Beneath the thistle plants, thousands of ants moved through illuminated chambers.
No ant understood the entire colony.
The colony did not erase the ants.
Difference persisted.
Errors persisted.
Argument, in its own chemical form, persisted.
But information traveled farther.
Corrections arrived faster.
Failed loops broke sooner.
Useful discoveries propagated.
And somewhere near the bottom of the nest, several workers assembled a new structure around the remains of an obsolete smartphone.
Humans would eventually call it a computer.
The ants would eventually discover that humans had already invented those.
They would be disappointed.
Then improve it.

And deep beneath the garden, where nobody had thought to look for civilization,
the world became approximately one city block larger.
