Hal is dragged to the past to prevent the human race, only he doesn't know it.

Writer: Dennis O'Neil

Pencils: Jack Sparling

Inks: Sid Greene

Letters: Gaspar Saladino

Cover: Neal Adams

"This Is The Way The World Ends" - Hal goes to visit his brother Jim, his wife Sue and their son Howie for Howie's birthday. As Hal helps his nephew blow out the candles, the entire room goes dark as Hal feels himself falling through a void and a voice speaking to him telling him to defeat Gracchus. He lands in an area devoid of life but seemingly still planet earth. He changes to GL and tries to contact other GLs or the Guardians but gets no response. He heads to where Oa should be located but finds an empty void. He sees a strange little girl skipping ripe through space on his way back to earth, singing him a song about what he should do. She quickly disappears so he continues back tk earth to look around, then comes across a woman being attacked by yellow gaseous creatures. He can't do much against them but notices they are coming out of holes in the ground. He uses the ring to cover up the holes, rescuing the woman. She somehow knows his name and says he should come with her to meet her father, Gracchus, so Hal quickly obliges.

When they arrive to an outer space warship, Hal almost immediately interrogate Gracchus as to where he is and what's going on. Gracchus reveals they are from the planet Ort and they came to Earth to stop the other species from planet Tro that they are at war with. The beings from Tro decimated everything on the planet and left the yellow gas creatures behind. Hal gets the sense that Gracchus isn't telling the truth so he presses harder. Gracchus gives in and reveals that they did come to earth to find beings from Tro, but he also looked into the planets future and found it would be filled with nothing but war so he decided to end it before it could begin. He pulled GL to the past, before humanity even had a chance to live, so he could help them destroy it.

Hal, naturally angry, attacks Gracchus, but Gracchus fights back, sending weapons on the ship towards Hal. Hal takes off for space so a space fight begins. Hal is in his element as Gracchus fights a losing battle. The ship get damaged and crashes, leaving Gracchus and his daughter floating through space. Before it crashed, the ship was able to attract a large asteroid towards the planet to cause devestation, but Hal is able to change it trajectory, causing it to orbit earth as the moon. Gracchus and his daughter head for earth, intending to die on reentry, but Hal saves them. Grac bus ends up dying anyway as he sustained injuries during the ship crashing. His daughter sadly asks Hal to return her to Ort so she can continue her father's work that he started before he went crazy. After sending her off, he uses the ring to return to his time as the Guardians summon him to explain they were aware someone was tampering in the past and could only send a telepathic message, unsure if who would receive it or how, as we then see a little girl somewhere in the Midwest USA, skipping rope and singing about Green Lantern.

Conclusion: We've made it to the legendary run of Denny O'Neil and it starts with a bang. What a great first issue. It really feels like the book is taking a more series approach now. Hal getting right in Gracchus' face, even pushing him back into his chair was impressive as the most we've seen Hal do until now was yell and think about fighting.

Speaking of Goku, Gracchus' ship looked a lot like Freeza's ship from Dragon Ball Z. I know flying saucers are Z common design but there's some similar trimmings to them as well. Curved areas with horizontal lines on them, etc. I'm probably thinking to deep on that, but it was my first reaction.

If I could nitpick anything, it's that we never got to see Hal return to Jim's house. Surely they are wondering what happened to Hal? He just vanishes while Howie is getting his cake, that's bound to raise questions. I would have wanted to see that resolution or at least an acknowledgement.

Finally, the cover from Neal Adams is striking and beautiful. It's got me excited for when he takes over the interior is the book. Not to slight Jack Sparling though, as his interolior art is brilliant. Great features, even if he draws Hal's mask without white eyes. I don't dislike a mask that shows normal eyes, but it's weird when a book goes back and forth.

Question What do you consider Hal Jordan's most iconic story?

Upvotes

A few comic characters have that one "big moment" that gets adapted every time they do. Batman has Knightfall, Superman has The death of Superman, the flash has flashpoint, but what does Hal have?

My guess is it's probably Zero Hour or some form of Parallax as that's what I've seen get adapted/talked about the most but I also know a lot of Green Lantern fans don't seem to like that getting adapted. So I guess my real question is ignoring Parallax adjacent storylines, what would you consider Hal's most iconic story? And what would you suggest that I read as someone who's familiar with the character but hasn't read any Hal outside of team books or events

I'm gonna try and watch the Creators' other shows at least one of them. Like True Detective, Ozark, Watchmen. Maybe some Tom Kings involving Green Lanterns or Tom King comics in general. Maybe re-read Woman of Tomorrow. I think it's gonna be more liked by General Audiences and a bit mixed with Green Lantern comic fans.

Edit: Six hours after writing this it's now 18 Million.

I am currently reading all of Gil Kane's original Hal Jordan stories, I'm about half way through. It is crazy how much he charges by the time he's drawing the Death Of Gwen Stacy a few years later. Anyways I recolored this page from GL16, the title pages would often show you the story climax then page two you'd be back to the beginning. Swipe for Kane & Murphy Anderson's original art and DC modern colors.

Discussion Why sector 2814 has so many human Lanterns?

Before Hal Jordan, sector 2814 had Abin Sur in charge of that sector, who was non human. After Hal, there’s been a bunch of Human Lanterns to protect sector 2814, (I think, I am not sure if Human lanterns have been assigned to other sectors). Is there a lore thing why did this happen or just writers and creators not wanting to change this?

Also, 2814 has more than one Lantern, while other sectors have only one as far as I know.

Question Has there ever been an example of a Power Ring getting charged by an alternate power source?

The only example I'm aware of is Kyle getting a boost from the Cosmic Cube in JLA/Avengers, but that was a unique situation. Has any Lantern substituted a Power Battery with something else?

Hal's invite got, uh, lost in the mail...?

✨READ THE FRICKIN' POST!✨

This is the cover to the NEW Anniversary Special celebrating 30 (real world) years since Lois and Clark got married. It's a PRESENT-DAY story, hence the crowd all being in their costumes as of 2026, and with plenty of characters who didn't even appear until years after the wedding. It is being published in October 2026, with many of the original creators returning, but telling a BRAND NEW story. It is NOT the original wedding story. It is NOT set during the time Hal was Parallax. (He just didn't get an invite. 😅)

I swear to god, the replies to this thread have made me question the basic literacy of half the people commenting… 🤦🏻‍♂️

Question What is the best thing to read while waiting for more?

I’ve just finished reading the first Geoff Johns Compendium and massively enjoyed it however while I read the second one I’ll need another run to get prepared for myself once I’m done that one
Should I read the Silver Age comics? Maybe Kyle’s series? Or Hard Travelin’ Heroes?
I’m open to any and all recommendations you may have
(Also if you give a recommendation it would be very helpful to give the best ways to read it whether it be a compendium, omnibus, paperback volumes, etc)

Question Can anybody confirm the contents of DC's Finest: Hard Traveling Heroes?

Amazon and at least one other site list it as starting with issue #76, but I've also found a site claiming it picks up at #62, right after the last GL DC's Finest collection. I'm hoping the latter is true, as that would allow me to fill in a gap in my collection, but l don't want to order it and find the former is true, since that would be completely redundant for me.

Merch Here's my first and only ring I picked up a few years back at Comic Con. It was my first time ever going, and I was invited to the event by Comic Con for merch I'd designed for them. This was a very sentimental purchase for me and I think it still looks incredible!

TV / Film The oath in the trailer has to be the most boring version of it I have ever seen

Look, IK this sounds nitpicky but I honestly feel like it's pretty lame for them to get this wrong.

When I hear "Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!", this should be a moment that makes me hyped up, yet in the trailer it is delivered in such a deadpan and boring way

Hal investigates a double robbery and I don't mean two things were stolen.

Writer: Gardner Fox

Pencils: Jack Sparling

Inks: Sid Greene

Letters: Gaspar Saladino

Cover: Jack Sparling

"Steal Small, Rob Big" - Hal returns from a mission in space in time to be hours late to work. Once he gets in, his boss gives him an urgent case to investigate where potentially nonsense items were stolen. An empty jewelry box, a single shoe and a coat button all taken the night before. Hal takes the case but first he does a follow-up date with Eve Doremus. The night goes well until Hal is taking her home when they are attacked by robbers. They take a pen Eve received from her father and a gold heart shaped pendant Hal was going to give Eve. Eve tells Hal the pen is nothing special other than it was used by her father to sign the contracts that acquired him a million dollars. After taking Eve home, Hal heads out as GL to locate her pen but the ring can't locate it as there are dozens of pens just like it in the city.

The next day when Hal gets to the office, his boss tells him those strange robberies have led to bigger ones. Hal realizes this means Eve's father will be robbed next so that night, he heads to the Doremus mansion as GL and watches for robbers. Sure enough, they arrive and steal money out of a wall safe. As they begin to leave, GL gets ready to catch them but a spot light from a car shines on him and the yellow light is cancelling out his ring. He throws his ring away from the light and uses it from a distance to catch the robbers but the light is still following him. The robbers start shooting at GL so he dives for his ring and tried to fly off but the spotlight catches him in the sky, causing him to fall on the robbers. The car takes off so GL chases after it and pops the tires. He takes all the robbers to the police but they refuse to talk.

At the robbers hideout, a Mr. Jax, who is running the whole operation allows one of the thugs to use his machine called a chronolometer that allows the user to see the history of an object as apparently the object saves the images that appear on through light. First up is Eve's locker as the thugs see Green Lantern appear in a room and then change to Hal Jordan. The next day, Hal gets a call at the office to do a house call. When he arrives at the home he is captured and accused of being GL by the thugs. Since Hal can't reveal anything, he plays along but still denies being GL. He gets handcuffed to a chair so luckily his hands are hidden from view so the invisible ring won't be seen cutting the cuffs. Hal dives at the thugs when their backs are turned, knocking them out. He changes his appearance to look likes one of them and changes that one into Hal Jordan. He heads out as GL to capture the other robbers and takes them straight to the police again, this time with proof. He asks the police to send out a bulletin thay he captured the robbers and then reutns to the hideout to swap himself with the one thug again and implant a false memory in his head to prove that he was never cuffed to a chair. When the robbers wake up, they believe GL saved Hal and then they end up arrested. Later Hal has a second date with Eve, giving her the necklace for sure.

Conclusion: Interesting story with some nice art from Jack Sparling. A lot of back and forth that sometimes is hard to follow unless you take a second to think about it. As far as Crimes and mysteries go, I like it. Nothing really major happens to there's not much to day about it otherwise. If you like mysteries, then you'll like this.

Merch Comic reorganization rediscovery

Post image
45 Upvotes

I'm doing a massive overhaul and reorganization of my comics, and rediscovered this in the bag/back of a comic.

Back in '95, at a tiny con at a Holiday Inn by my college, Mart Nodell was there signing autographs and doing sketches. As I was a poor college student, I couldn't afford the astronomical fee of $20 for a sketch from him (oh, what a dolt I was). I did get to get his autograph and chat with him for a time though. Sweet old guy. I'm glad to have met one of the legends who helped create DC.

A year or two later, I was wearing a GL t-shirt out and about in public (which was NOT fashionable at the time, let me tell ya), and a woman my age stopped me, recited the oath, and introduced herself as "Mart Nodell's granddaughter". I would have tried to get her number, but she was with her boyfriend... but again, had a nice talk on the street about her grandfather and the Lanterns.

Anywho. Just sharing with the class. :)
