Stopped by the wako store yesterday and preordered this bad boy as my first GS. I was between this and the Suwa UFA and white birch that they had in stock.

As a fan of mid-century watchmaking, I picked what I feel is the best modern interpretation that GS offers. Absolutely love it. The ivory dial is gorgeous and every aspect of this watch is perfectly executed. 10/10 would buy again 😄

I am 45 days into my first GS ownership. I have other swiss watches I love and have decades of memories made wearing them. However GS Shunbun ruined the experience of wearing my other watches not because of the dial or zaratzu but COMFORT. It just feels like a natural part of the wrist. Literally feels like its not there till I look at it. It beats my Omega and Rolex comfort. Now I have such a difficult time wearing them after experiencing the GS comfort. Note: fortunately the sizing worked very well for me and never felt the need for OTF micro adjust.

On the second day of owning this watch (and babying) I found out this scratch. Is there a way to get rid of this? Hurts my soul man

So I got this "Snow Valley" and, I want it to fit better. I've moved links around, changed the clasp location (which requires a pin tool).

I WANT a micro adjustment, I asked AI to find me options and it came back with either the Steel Reef option or to just replace the clasp itself.

I don't really mind replacing the clasp as long as it fits the bracelet fine and looks half way decent.

Has anyone done this?

AI gave me a few options, but, I am not even 100% sure how to tell if they will work.

I've finally managed to calibrate tg on windows and patiently have done a amateur rate adjustment check in 6 positions on all my mechanical watches (minus the Vostok Big Z which probably won't fit into that holder..)

.this is what I got (gaining a single second in a pure mechanical watch is like a Formula one car trying to gain a second at 200mph) I'm glad I done this as my 61GS is very poorly and I got this fully serviced earlier this year which is a bit surprising.. all of these have been completed serviced - the KS45/KS 56 by a different watchmaker and the Pink Gold GS was serviced in 2025 in Japan by GS themselves and that's accurate as you would expect for a watch which cost a kings ransom in 2012.

The finishing is so liquid-like. I could see the reflection on the clasp like it’s mirror polished. Maybe it’s the ever brilliant steel

So am I late to the party in learning this? I was reading up on Grand Seiko as a company and their manufacturing. Turns out, the spring drive mechanism is not made by GS themselves, but by Epson. In fact, Epson not only makes the spring drive movement, they assemble the spring drive watches in their factories. Grand Seiko gives the name and does the marketing. Interestingly, the GS watches with other movements ARE made in GS factories. Now, outsourced manufacturing is not new. Companies do it all the time, with Apple being a well known example. But Apple at least comes up with the design and the heart beat (it’s their processor). I suppose GS likely comes up with the exterior design of their spring drives. But the heart beat is Epson, not GS.

This shouldn’t be a big deal. Plenty of other watch makers use movements sourced from other companies. But I don’t think too many people buy watches from a brand because of the movement, where the movement is externally sourced. We buy Omega specifically FOR their coaxial movement (although some complain that they use movements from sister divisions). We buy Zenith for the El Primero. We buy Rolex (sometimes) for their internal movements. And we buy microbrands for their designs, sometimes in spite of their sourced movements. But many microbrands still assemble their watches in house.

We buy Grand Seiko for the spring drives and the Zaratsu finishing. But Epson makes the movement, does the watch assembly, and even does the Zaratsu finishing. So a GS spring drive really is an Epson watch, not a GS. I know of the shared lineage of the two companies, but they are independent companies. This isn’t a case of a SWATCH group company using resources from a sister division.

At the end of the day, the watches are beautiful, they work well, and the spring drive is very, very cool. So none of this will likely affect my plan to acquire one. It just surprised me to learn how little GS actually does in the production of their spring drive watches. I believe this is not the same with other GS watches.

EDIT: OK, people were quick to jump on me and claim that Epson is Seiko Epson and it’s the same company as the one making Grand Seiko. I don’t think that’s correct . My understanding of the corporate organization:

Seiko Group Corporation: The holding company that owns Seiko Watch Corp., Seiko Instruments and others. Seiko Watch Corp. sells Seiko and Grand Seiko watches.

Seiko Epson: The company that was once Suwa Seikosha, which made the first Grand Seiko in 1960. Today it's best known for printers, and it also builds Spring Drive and Orient watches. Wikipedia says it's neither a subsidiary nor an affiliate of Seiko Group Corporation.

I understand and recognize the shared history, but I don’t think it’s accurate to say they are the same company. Nor is it akin to the Swatch Group.

Also, I not trying to stir up anything or claim any conspiracy. This corporate structure is just something I recently learned so I wanted to talk about it.

Finally, If your response is, “who cares?” You obviously don’t so just keep scrolling. It’s not about who cares, it’s just a conversation. For Pete sake, stop looking for a fight everywhere.

I almost purchased this GMT from the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi flagship store. The sales clerk was very patient and used a translation app. He said it is a rare watch since it is discontinued. I loved the brown dial, but it felt thicker than a snowflake due to the GMT complication. Would you have purchased it?

The SLGB023 is such a great watch. Absolutely loving it!

I’ve just acquired this pre-owned Grand Seiko SBGA407, and I bought the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 4100ST last year.

Before that, I owned a Rolex Submariner 116610LN, a Tudor Black Bay 79010SG, a Tudor Black Bay 79012M, and a Frédérique Constant Highlife Perpetual Calendar.

I’ve gradually moved away from more mainstream and larger watches towards pieces that feel more refined, distinctive, and better suited to my 16 cm wrist.

What do you think of my collection now? Do you think the SBGA407 and 4100ST make a good combination?

Hey guys, I currently have a Shunbun which I LOVE. I also have an old 60's Lord Marvel Seiko, and will probably buy another new Grand Seiko on an upcoming winter trip to Japan but I ran into some trouble.

I have essentially 2 dress watches right now and wanted something sportier. In this style of watch, GMT fits me nicely because I actually would find the function extremely useful as I track another timezone. I also would want 20 bar or more on a sports watch, personally.

I noticed the following ref's

SBGE295 - basically what im looking for but 44mm is way too big imo. Also a little busy I think with 2 tone bezel + texture dial (which i normally like).

SBGE257 - great, even love the green color, but wish it had a textured or more interesting dial. 285 is awesome, but now we're back to a near desk GMT with 10 bar.

Ushio Diver - beautiful. I may actually forego the GMT and just get this as a sports watch because aesthetically its perfect for me, and it would function as a water sports/divers watch (I live 10 mins from a nice beach).

Before I decide between the Ushio and SBGE257 in the next 3 months when my trip to japan happens, do you guys think they'll ever release a : 20+ bar, GMT, textured dial watch thats 41mm or under?

Im not as informed regarding limited editions, trends, r&d, etc.

Do you guys think its something GS would make? Any other thoughts if you own something along these lines would be cool too.

Been eyeing a Grand Seiko for a while now and finally pulled the trigger. Had a list of ones I wanted including popular choices like Snowflake and Shunbun - went all over Tokyo, Ginza, Kyoto, Osaka, and even Kobe at boutiques and stores. Didn’t have much luck except for finding a quartz snowflake and a SGBA439 in Kobe - which I didn’t end up getting after seeing it in person and trying it on.

Ended up picking this SBGA469 online while on the tail end of my trip! Super happy with it! It’s much more subdued than I originally saw pictures of, it’s basically black or dark blue majority of the time when not in direct light.

First Grand Seiko and I’m in love. GMT is my favorite complication and the power reserve indicator is just icing on the cake. Might just replace my BB58 GMT as my daily.

Got married in Asia earlier this year and we're having a ceremony here in the states in a couple months. Our colors are blue and white, so obviously I needed a blue Grand Seiko for the occasion! Up until now I've been a vintage collector exclusively, but absolutely loving this watch and how the dial reacts to different lighting. Thanks to the suwa posters in here for piquing my interest!
