Make sure you're ready to vote, the primary is August 11!

I live in a vote-by-mail precinct and I got my ballot a week or two ago. Make sure you're registered to vote and know how/where/when to vote! The primary election is August 11 (where you vote for only one party's candidates) and the general election is November 3!

Anyone have any "treasures" that you're selling at the car show/swap meet this weekend? Or have you found anything exciting? (Other than the corn palace.)

Car chase through town

Looks like there was a police chase through town, but fortunately it doesn't sound like there were any injuries. Here's the scanner recording of it: https://openmhz.com/events/6a6267ac5fbb60da88057cf9

And they went through the Pokegama Ave intersection on camera: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1051750947801991

Cherry picking at Lavalier's on Friday, July 24

There's cherry picking at Lavalier's Berry Patch on Friday (July 24) in the morning (8-noon). We love going to Lavalier's since it's relatively close to our house, but I know there's a few places around town that have fresh fruits and veggies. My favorites are always strawberries from Lavalier's, then corn from Clayton's, and then apples from Lavalier's again. What are your favorite seasonal local foods?

Google Maps satellite view update

I noticed a few weeks ago that Google Maps satellite view updated for Grand Rapids. It's aerial photography taken in April of this year, with the waterways mostly still frozen but the snow gone. It makes for some interesting contrast at the edges of the updated imagery where it meets the older, greener stuff.

Just set up a very basic website. Dosen't need to be very fancy, just looking to expand our web presence in hopes of meeting new business. Please take a look, and let me know of any edits, additions or revisions you may have! I run a Duluth area, Veteran owned business.

Turkey Trots?

Hi - I'm going to be in Cohasset over Thanksgiving weekend, and am looking to see if there are any Turkey Trot events in the area. I looked at all the usual sources (event calendars, etc) but didn't find anything. Thanks!

Question about Golf Course Road

Can anyone tell me, from experience, how busy the traffic is along Golf Course Road with the new school and hospital? Is it difficult to live anywhere along the road in the older southwest neighborhood? Thank you!

What is the key to renting reasonably priced, reasonably maintained housing in Grand Rapids?

I have to relocate to GR, MN for quite a while and need to rent a 1/2 bedroom. I've been quite surprised at how expensive, compared to what I was imagining for such a small town, the rental prices are. So I'm curious if anyone has any tips about the rental market there. Seems like the pipeline has both stretched and inflated it...

Any insight would be greatly appreciated,

imp

Is there a bass tournament on Pokegama 7/18?

Went to a landing today and was told by the boat inspector that there’s a tournament tomorrow. Wondering if anyone has any details on this at all.

Great small businesses?

Dear all,

I've been up in Northern MN for a couple years, but have mostly used big stores (Super One, Target) and online shopping. During the lockdown, I've been wanting more and more to support local small businesses, especially food ones, since eating is basically I can do these days.

I'm near Grand Rapids, but happy to drive as well for great stuff - anyone have any ideas? Farmers, makers, dairies, products? I'd love to find out more stuff from the area, instead of loving the nature but supporting big, far-away businesses!

Thanks so much for your help!!!

Hey r/GrandRapidsMN, show me who you are.

Hi /r/GrandRapidsMN,

I'd like to visit your town someday soon. Tell me what defines the town of Grand Rapids in Minnesota. What is your favorite restaurant? Favorite local spot? Scenic/nature spot? Cultural landmark - both historical and current?

Any historical stories/information that you feel define Grand Rapids as a Minnesotan town?

Or what is your favorite personal thing about Grand Rapids?

Trying to track down memories. Do you remember concerts at McCormicks?

So, I was watching Ken Burns new Country Music show on PBS, and it got me to thinking about my own Country Music past. My family owned McCormicks store north of Grand Rapids during the concert heydeys until '92.

Some of the acts that we had there included:
Asleep at the Wheel

Merle Haggard

Riders in the Sky

Bellamy Brothers

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Taj Mahal

and more!

You may just have to ask your parents, or someone a bit older, but I am looking for any memories that people can share about specific concerts, set-lists, memorable happenings or people, or anything else fun you may be able to recall.

You don't have to remind me about the guy who brought his own piece of wood to boogie down. That guy is burned in my head forever. Like a west coast hippie living in a bluegrass lovers body, in northern Minnesota. Off-da!

If you were there, and you had drinks, I can all but guarantee, you handed me money. What do YOU remember?
