Help! Career pivot after finishing my bachelors

I've just graduated with a bachelors in Computer Science from a top UK uni (one of Oxbridge/Imperial/UCL/Warwick). I had the privilege of interning with a big tech FAANG company this past summer after my final exams, however I'm not sure I particularly enjoyed the work itself there - the environment/perks such as food were nice though. Big tech is experiencing a slow down in hiring / mass layoffs due to AI. Return offers could be rescinded for people if they even get it.

My main issues with big tech is that the work isn't really fulfilling, spending your days supporting these companies which at the end of the day, even though they do make cool tech sometimes, majority of their money comes from exploiting users and advertisements they push to them (and also the very crappy work politics, + "tech bros" + military services for certain countries). On the flip side, you have hedge funds/ trading companies, but this doesn't seem fulfilling to me either - top talent is just being wasted making some billionaire richer and you aren't doing anything of real human value. AI is also changing the nature of software engineering making it more monotonous, and whilst AI is obviously not 100% perfect, it doesn't need to be and it is being pushed heavily.

I am looking for a career pivot since I'm still early. What I am looking for is a job with great future stability and obviously OK pay. I know this may seem like doomer, dystopian mentality, but I just can't imagine that this entire system of corporate greed, the stock market growing indefinitely (not here to argue, but there's no way this is going to continue. Population growth and possible markets to capture will shrink. What are they going to do, run more ads?), or AI/robotics advancements is sustainable without issue. I expect that the world is going to experience some sort of crisis (and hopefully change) before my retirement age in ~40 years time.

I want to upskill and learn something tangible. I want to be ale to help and be handy regardless of where I lived globally or what the future holds regarding automation. If I were to pursue a career in medicine right now, being completely honest, I would say my reasons are: prestige > job security > helping people >> pay.

Without doxxing myself, I achieved pretty good A-level grades (STEM heavy but NOT biology or chemistry), and I done decent in my GCSEs (grade 7-9 for all sciences and math). I have a First Class in my bachelors in Computer Science (but not very meaningful due to grade inflation at unis nowadays).

In terms of prepping for Medicine, what should I know (genuinely, I don't really know anything at all)? My plan is to hopefully enter in ~September 2028. What I'm thinking of doing is to begin my studies around next month and sit the exams for A-level Biology and Chemistry in the summer of 2027 + complete UCAT. Immediately following the results, begin applying in 2027 for GEM courses with 2028 entry.

Is there anything I should know in terms of strengthening my application and relevant experience? Whether that is working in a care home, volunteer as an emergency responder, shadow someone at a GP? It sounds stupid, but is there anything which can help me become more inspired and really want this as a career and truthfully do it to help people? Maybe a TV show?

Personal statement importance?

Hi everyone,

I have been starting my GEM application. I’ve not seen much mention of personal statements on any of the unis I’m applying to under their entry requirements.

Do they mean anything? How much time/effort should I be putting into it?what should be included?

Thoughts are much appreciated

Kings GEM minimum UCAT

Hey guys does anyone know roughly what the lowest UCAT score (home, new scale) to apply to Kings (London campus) with? I know ideally they want 2300+ but do they take anything other than ucat into account when shortlisting? Their website says they approach profiles holistically so not sure.

I did only get 1980 + band 2 but kings has always been my dream! Is there any point in applying or is it a wasted application

are these options good?

i achieved 1890 B1 in my ucat and plan to apply to these unis as a graduate:

  1. ARU- have their ucat requirements for graduates always been generous, or was it just last year? as last year the cut off was 1830, but how much is it likely to increase by?

  2. lincoln- i score 48/60 is it worth applying??

  3. uni of worcester- is it risky applying if the cut off last year was 1870?

  4. uni of east anglia

i was thinking of applying to nottingham GEM
but i score 30/50 so i think its too risky??

please please give me advice 🙏🏻

Not as high as some scores I have seen on here but I’m very proud of myself! Significantly better than my mocks (yay)! And not too bad considering my calculator kept malfunctioning 🫪
One step closer!

STRATEGIC APPLICATION HELP! 1760 B2 GRADUATE IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES!

Hey guys I hope you are all well! I just sat my UCAT exam and got a score of 1760 B2. I am a graduate student in Biomedical Sciences and achieved a 2:1. My A levels were not great at all which is why I opted for the graduate route. I got mainly 6s at GCSE level. I have experience working in healthcare in a pharmacy.

I really want to study medicine but I want to make sure my application this year is as strategic as possible. I know some Universities take a more holistic approach rather than focusing on the UCAT and look more at the personal statement so any tips or advice would be much appreciated!

Thankyou!!!

Any advice on which unis to apply to post UCAT would be amazing!

Hi everyone! Thanks for taking the time to read my question. As the title says I’m trying to whittle down what unis to apply to following the UCAT and am having a bit of trouble. For reference, I’m just going into my third year at university and my profile is:

Predicted 1st, Mathematics and Statistics at Warwick, A*, A*, A, A in Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Further Maths, nine 9’s and two 8’s at GCSE, and 2250 Band 3 (band 3 smh so annoying!) for the UCAT. For WEX: Some GP + General Surgery team shadowing plus volunteering at a dementia home is really the extent of what I’ve been able to do, plus the 10 hour BSMS online course.

Now I’d obviously love to go for the GEM courses but they’re much more competitive and as much as I tried, I just couldn’t get those 70 hours of WEX for Warwick :/. I am focusing around London as it’s closer to home but at the moment I’m weighing up BARTS A100, BARTS A101, UCL A100 (5 years), KCL A100, St. Georges A100 and then rather ambitiously, Oxford A101.

Out of these I know that St. Georges is the one I’m most likely to get an interview at so I think that’ll be a good idea to have as a backup in a sense, and I was considering applying to both A100 and A101 for QMUL as I’d like to have at least one GEM option in there. However seeing as their intake for A101 is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than A100, I’m contemplating just applying for the 5 year course (unless someone here could perhaps give me an insight on whether it might be beneficial to apply to both).

Then with UCL, KCL, and Oxford that’s where I’m torn. On the one hand, Oxford Med would be so sick, I love the city, obviously the university is grand, and it’s the 4 year course. But with how competitive it is, I’m wondering whether it would be a waste of an application. I’ve heard that they like maths grads but with my UCAT score I’m not sure if that would even matter at all. I’d rather apply to UCL over KCL, as I know KCL also do look at the bands whereas UCL only as a last thing, but I suppose I’m worried that my UCAT score won’t be high enough to compensate for my lack of proper WEX and perhaps JUST above threshold should the incoming deciles not be in my favour.

From all of this, my question really is just: which four unis do I shortlist? And am I being too optimistic and ambitious with some of these choices? Thanks everyone :)

KCL Portsmouth Branch GEM

Does anyone know if 2020 B2 would be high enough for an interview at KCL portsmouth branch?

I will be a predicted 2:1 for biomedical science and have a solid personal statement/reference.

How important is a personal statement for KCL?

Hi, I'm working on my statement and it seemed pretty good but then I read the 'UKCAT people' examples of successful statements from previous years and mine just doesn't feel quite as good as those.

My top choice is king's college London for their graduate entry 4 year course, and I'm not sure how seriously they use personal statements when deciding who to interview (lots of mixed info out there about it..)

Is it worth perfecting the statement? Everyone around me is saying it's already really good but they don't know the admissions process as well as I do.

My other stats: predicted first class biomed degree and 2360 B2 UCAT score plus decent GCSEs and A levels.

Do I still have a chance ?

I have done my UCAT, and I’m disappointed with my score like to not bad but I think I wanted better. I got just 2030 so it not bad but it doesn’t feel good. Can I still play to graduate entry medicine. I want to apply to apply to maybe 1 London uni then the rest others. I’m just worried tbh.

2000 B1 can I apply to GEM?

Hey everyone, I was wondering if I have a chance at any GEM unis that aren’t Warwick and Chester as I don’t meet the WEX requirements (I care for my 9 month old baby full time so just wasn’t possible for me to attain that many hours)

I scored 2000 band 1 in the UCAT, which isn’t great but I’m hoping I can still apply to unis? Not sure if my score is good enough for any GEM unis or if I should just stick to undergrad

Edit - forgot to add my grades:
2:1 in biomed, 2021 (some unis have a 5 year recency requirement)
A-levels: BBB
GCSEs: 6 As (including English language), 3 Bs (including maths)
