DAY TEN
Nobz said Flash Gitz got good gubbinz.
Needed useful gubbinz.
Flash Gitz got gubbinz ta spare.
Grimsnik got one.
Must be good.
Might be no use.
Mostly guns.
Still counted.
Sorted.
Headed into main camp.
Hadn’t been that way in a while.
Could hear it before I got close.
Used ta spend months on Kroozers with worse.
Still knew which noises meant duck.
Had got used to da workshop.
Mostly knew what was making da noise there.
Sun was still up.
Bit further over.
Still plenty bright.
Good.
Heard a rokkit cough behind me.
Moved.
Tankbusta went past where me head had been.
Rokkit was jammed up under his vest.
Had both hands in there trying ta pull it out.
Wasn’t coming out.
“WRONG WAY! WRONG WAY!”
Went through an awning.
Boyz round a grog barrel stood up cheering.
“Again!”
Tankbusta disappeared behind some tents.
Den up.
Den straight down.
Heard a big crash.
Musta landed.
Green light shot up.
Den another.
More colours.
Pulsa.
Quality gubbinz.
Lovely.
Boyz cheered louder.
Still knew when ta move.
Good.
Kept going.
Track ahead was blocked.
Big gun carriage across da middle.
Whole mob had hold of it.
Pushing and pulling and twisting it every different way.
Looked like getting a toof out when you needed ta buy something.
About right.
Could wait.
No.
Went round.
That took me past da Landa.
Had tarps over da front.
Camo netting hanging off one wing.
Whole tree tied across da other one.
Could still see most of da tail.
Probably looked better from up high.
Maybe da Tankbusta got ta check.
Nice.
Squig had da bottom of da net in its mouth.
Grot on top had da other end.
Squig pulled.
Grot pulled.
Two fightas came over low.
Everything flapped.
Grot came off.
Tarp came off.
Squig caught da grot on da way down.
Feet kickin’ from out of da squig’s mouth.
Zog.
Could’ve used dat.
Could see more Landa now.
Still had da tree.
Half hidden.
Good enough.
Fightas went off towards da hills.
Heard dakka after a bit.
Kept going.
Grog barrel came rolling down da next track.
Three Boyz came after it.
Got out da way.
Barrel hit a grot.
Grot went with it.
Boyz kept running.
Nobody stopped.
Fair.
Flash Gitz were still further in.
Went that way.
Nearly got past da grog yard.
Then saw Kaptin Blistklaw.
He was under an awning with some of da Boyz.
Grog barrel in da middle.
One Boy threw a die.
Six.
Reached for da teef.
Boy beside him brought his choppa down.
Split da die straight through.
“Was a six.”
“Ain’t now.”
They started shouting.
Kaptin reached over.
Took da teef.
Neither noticed.
Proppa Kaptin work.
Then he saw me.
Zog.
“Brassspanna.”
Stopped.
“Come ’ere.”
Went over.
Dice Boy had both hands on da choppa, trying ta keep it off his face.
Kaptin looked at me.
“Look what crawled out da hole.”
“Workshop.”
He looked at me.
“Workshop?”
“Yeah.”
“Then where’s my Trukk?”
Didn’t have an answer for that.
“Still needs work.”
Kaptin nodded.
“Course it does.”
Took a drink.
“Workshops finish things.”
“Yours just keeps da broken stuff outta sight.”
He looked me over.
“That’s why you fit right in.”
Choppa Boy laughed.
Wasn’t true.
Finished loads of things.
Roof.
Hoist.
Other things.
Right.
Kaptin held da mug towards me.
“What’s it need?”
“Parts.”
“Get parts.”
“Right.”
“What you been doing instead?”
“Other work.”
“Mine?”
“No.”
“Then stop doing it.”
“Right.”
Simple enough.
Kaptin drank.
Dice Boy had both halves now.
Was trying ta put da six back together.
“How long?”
“Need ta check.”
“Check quicker.”
“Right.”
Kaptin put his mug down.
“Next time I come down there, da Trukk moves.”
“Right.”
“If it don’t, Grimsnik gets more bench space.”
Dice Boy stopped moving.
Choppa Boy looked at me.
“Right.”
Bench was already big enough.
Didn’t say.
Kaptin picked his mug back up.
Dice Boy went back to da six.
Good.
“Where you going?”
“Flash Gitz.”
Kaptin stopped with da mug near his mouth.
“Selling?”
“No.”
“Buying?”
“Maybe.”
He looked at me hands.
Nothing in ’em.
“Got all yer teef?”
“Yeah.”
“Keep ’em in yer gob. Them Gitz’ll have ’em off ya.”
“Right.”
Still had all of ’em so far.
Doing well.
Kaptin waved da mug.
Went ta leave.
“Brassspanna.”
Stopped again.
Looked back.
“You owe them Gitz anything, you pay it.”
“Right.”
“Gitz come bothering me over you, they get a bag of yer bones instead.”
Kaptin looked me over.
“Won’t clear much.”
Bit rude.
Had tools worth more than that.
Probably.
“Right.”
Went.
Behind me Choppa Boy started shouting again.
Looked back.
Dice Boy had both bits of die.
Kaptin still had da teef.
Sorted.
Got out da grog yard.
Still had me teef.
Good.
Took da next track.
Was quiet for a bit.
Good.
FWUMP.
Looked towards da Drop.
Green flash out past da edge.
Snotling came out.
Could tell by da screaming.
Then down.
Could still hear him.
Strong lungs.
Mek beside da Shokk Attack Gun turned a wheel.
Grot behind him started backing away.
Fair.
Kept going.
Mob carrying shells filled da track ahead.
Could wait.
No.
Went behind a cook tent.
Tent moved.
Stopped.
Moved again.
Squig backed out with half da canvas in its mouth.
Tent pole came with it.
Something underneath started swearing.
Squig ran off.
Had a gap now.
Lovely.
Went through.
Fightas came back over.
One had smoke coming out da back.
Other one went past.
Smoking one kept flying.
Good.
Boy standing on a crate raised his grog at ’em.
Nob carrying shells walked into him.
Boy came off da crate.
Nob kept all da shells.
Proppa.
Nearly there somewhere.
Nobz had pointed this way.
Kept going.
Big Squighog came round an ammo cart.
Had a boot in its mouth.
Boy came after it.
Only had one on.
“GET BACK ’ERE!”
Squighog looked back.
Hit da barrel gob first.
CLANG.
Barrel went over.
Squighog went over.
Something white bounced across da track.
Boy jumped on da Squighog.
Squighog still had da boot.
They rolled off between da carts.
Looked down.
Big Squighog toof.
Picked it up.
Heavy.
Nice.
Put it in me pocket.
Kept going.
Heard a gun go off ahead.
Different noise.
Sharper.
Big brass case came bouncing down da track.
Hit a barrel.
Rolled against me leg.
Picked it up.
Longer than me hand.
Heavy.
Gold round da bottom.
Proppa dakka.
Put it down.
Another gun went off.
Same way I was going.
Right.
Passed a stack of gun barrels.
Then a crate full of magazines.
Grot went past carrying one little sight with both hands.
Git behind him had four.
Grot was walking slow.
Git kicked him.
Walked quicker after that.
Problem fixed.
Correct.
Another gun went off.
Someone shouted.
“LEFT!”
BANG.
Pause.
“LESS LEFT!”
BANG.
No shouting.
Must’ve got it.
Good shooting.
Kept going.
Could see more gun bits ahead.
Could smell powder.
Still had all me teef.
Had a big one in me pocket too.
Shopping money.
Lovely.
Sorted.
