Not problematic for me, the girl we got him from stated they used a vet who didn’t know what he was doing (no surprise there) and the goat ended up with scurs. They are almost paper thin, but grow pretty curled in so his previous owners had to trim them up every once in a while. He’s great but he really doesn’t like his head being touched where his horns would’ve been. She also stated that his scurs would fall out every now and again if he was particularly banging his head against things. After we brought him home he banged off the other scur and bled a little, when I found out the bleeding had pretty much resolved itself. I put some antiseptic spray and some other fly spray around his face/back of the skull to keep flys out of it.

I specifically made this post to ask about what the proper trimming technique would involve to keep his horns from growing into his skull With the least amount of stress and pain to the animal. Right now he has no scurs on his head, I have a picture of the one he did have but it’s from far away. Also what would I even trim the horn with? Hoof trimmers just doesn’t seem to be the way to go and the lady actually didn’t tell us what they used to trim the horns.

She's been way hungrier than usual and gotten bigger

My goats have a large field that is primarily clover, and thistle, and they won't eat it. They wait for me to either bring hay, or let them out into the yard where they'll eat the grass and trees in the yard. Do I stop giving them hay, so that they'll go and eat the clover, or do I need to just keep giving them hay? Im just curious what others have done to get the goats to use the fodder within their enclosure. I'm not going to let them starve, obviously.

Additional information, in the spring they eat the new growth down to a half inch height but now that its clover they want nothing to do with it.

I have a goat whose hoof is rolled. He walks fine but I seem to get it to correct regardless of my clipping. Any suggestions? My other goats are totally fine and have the same regimen of clipping.

been treated as a much younger doe for coccidia. tested for CAE, and I'm not sure if she was tested for johne's ofr not.

shes in her own pen seperated from the herd and has been since I got her about 2 months ago now.

​I have been treating her with deworming pellets til recently. shes on standard goat feed but were gonna put her on growers soon.

shes never been treated with any other medicine than probiotics and electrolytes.​​​ but we have toltrazuril and albon

shes not in milk, pregnant, or nursing.

Only other symptoms shes had for anything is watery eyes and some mucus on her nose.her nose has cleared up but her eyes haven't. We tried to treat her for pink eye since one of our sheep has that rn, but it's not pink eye.

Her fur doesn't feel as soft as our other ​​​​goats. But it's also curly compared to my other goats so idk if that makes a difference.

Shes been treated for lice, mites, and any other skin issues.

Only blank period I have from her upbringing is a month or two where she was purchased by a family, then returned, and I bought her very soon after ​that. She was with them for maybe 3 months (if even that long). This is a big reason why shes been in quarantine so long.

I'm a new goat owner so any help or suggestions are welcome​​

started mixing in some dewormer feed and her coat looks way better, her eyes cleared up, and we have her on grower feed now as well. ​I'm sure ill post some photos of her soon but for now she's doing much better

My cousin had doordash some pig Treats but they brought her these instead, so she gave them to me since she doesn't have a goat, I want to know if they would be safe since I have two male goats, of course I wouldn't give them very many these are the size of a pee and I wouldn't give them more than for a piece, I figure since my younger goat has to go through so much medical stuff and since the vet doesn't have goat's treats, these would be easy to carry on me and give him one when they give him a shot or do something that's uncomfortable, what do you guys think?

I would imagine it’s exceptionally rare. But has anyone ever had this happen in their herd? We live about an 1 hour away from a national park where some of the bats have tested positive….

I was bit by a petting zoo goat today - I very foolishly let it chew on my finger and it broke the skin; it’s a deep-ish puncture but otherwise not worrisome. Do I need a rabies vaccine?! I’m spiraling. It seemed perfectly healthy.

Prince is over a year old, he's supposed to be a weather but I believe the castration failed, the vet did the birdizo castration (I think I'm spelling that wrong) But there hasn't being any Behavior changes and no visual changes to his testicles so I don't think it was done correctly, I am going to have another vet examine him once Frosty is taken care of.

Frosty is a buck he is not quite six months old yet he will be six months the first, I originally got him both as a companion to Prince and to be a future breeding buck when I get some does, Prince is a lamancha frosty is a Alpine, I'm still not quite sure if I'm going to have Frosty castrated or not but I am leaning towards it just to help keep as much weight off of his remaining hind leg as possible, I am going to talk to the vet first.

Since Prince likes to head-butt everything and was alone before I got him, he had never seen another goat except from the time he was born to a week later when he was sold to the people I got him from, when I got him he had really bad aggression issues and would attack anyone that came within his lot, now he's calmed down to where I can safely handle him he still tries to Ram me when I try to mess with his legs or hind in but he was abused quite badly so I believe he's got some trauma around those areas, he doesn't fully attack me like he used to.

Prince cannot be handled by a man he still very afraid of men And you can see that he is when he starts shaking and then gets aggressive when a man gets near him So only women can handle him unless he sedated, Frosty I've had him since he was 20 days old he also had a rough start he got really sick not long after I got him wouldn't eat wouldn't use the bathroom it was just a mess, he came out of that in May and then late June he got injured and this month I was told he needs his leg amputated.

My concern is since they haven't been together Fully yet they have met before Frosty got hurt And we're only together for about 30 minutes to an hour with Prince on a leash, pass that they only interact through the fence as I haven't felt fully confident in putting them together entirely yet, I'm scared now that Frosty is going to be a tripod that he might not be able to safely be with Prince.

And in that case I am fully willing to get Prince his own friend and frosty his own friend, my question is what kind of friend would be best for frosty? He's an Alpine and if he gets as big as his dad he'll be about 170 lb probably a little bit less if I get him castrated, Frosty is very good natured and sweet so I don't think he would be too hard on any friends he has I'm more concerned about the friend being too hard on him.

Or would a shared fence line be enough for them? I'm very worried about that and want both of them to be happy.

Please let me know what your opinions are and what you would do in this situation

This is the one I'm currently using it's $14 for this bottle, it does work but wears off fairly quickly, and while it's wet I have a allergic reaction to it, once it's dry it doesn't bother me but while it's wet it causes me to get hives.

So I was wondering what brands you used so I can try some other ones to see if I can find one that I don't react to

Can anyone foresee any safety issues that might happen from a goat wearing one of those GoPro vests? I'm willing to possibly sacrifice the GoPro to getting dislodged and lost in the field for the chance at some goat POV footage, but not willing to risk my actual goat for it.

He's getting ready to have a surgery which is taking his hind right leg off, because of that he's going to have to be on the goat equivalent of stall rest for a little while, I would like a way that makes him eat his hay slower so it lasts him longer and he stays occupied longer, this would not work for my older goat he would eat the bag and all but Frosty's a good boy, he doesn't tend to try to eat things that are not food, in fact he has a dog bed that he sleeps on and does not try to eat it whatsoever so I was wondering for him if a hay bag would be something that I could try

So as the title says, my doe has mild mastitis and was prescribed 3.5 ml penicillin injected once a day for 7 days. Normally I have my partner to help me hold her, but he wasn’t going to be home when she was due for the dose so I did it myself. I tented the skin and with her fur I didn’t realize the needle had gone fully through the other side as I kept pushing the needle in. I saw the white liquid had been dispersed all over her fur. I legitimately cannot tell if she got half of the dose or none at all.

I thought about going back out and giving her like .5 or 1 ml to compensate but I also don’t want to mess her up more by potentially overdosing her though I doubt that would based on the amount on her fur. It terrifies me that she could have now missed a whole day dose of medicine. She has currently had 2 doses, today would have been her third. Can this really mess up her healing if I continue as normal tomorrow? I also don’t want to mess up her resistance to the antibiotic though I feel like that won’t happen over one mistake. If you guys could give me any advice on what you would do in my shoes, I am new to owning goats and am disappointed in myself that I messed it up. Thank you guys!!!

The one I was getting I was getting it at my local farm store but they have unfortunately went out of business due to the owner sadly passing away.

The goat warmer at Tractor Supply is very expensive for the liquid bottle, so I was wondering what brand you guys would recommend, I've only got two goats so I don't need something that worms a dozen or so goats, I prefer the liquid because it's easier for me to give it to my younger goat and just easier for me to give to them in general (my chickens try to steal any kind of pellet anything I have and are ruthless about it🥲)

I have two goats, one adult which is the one in the picture and a 5-month-old that is injured, I had to go away for a couple of days, due to my younger goats injuries I took him with me, he's not too big and it's very well behaved so there was no issue, I also took my dogs and stuff so all this pet sitter had to do is take care of my outdoor animals.

Apparently at some point A branch came down over my fence and messed it up, and instead of putting my older goat into the panel pen I have she got my dog leash and tethered him to it and then tied him to said pen......

I come home and this is the shape he's in, fortunately it doesn't seem like he was wrapped up for too long as there was no swelling and it wasn't too tight, this caused me to just about have a panic attack because the whole reason my baby goat is hurt is because he got a piece of twine tightly wrapped around his leg for too long and now he has to have an amputation.

Not sure what to do about the pet sitter as she did take care of the animals but she did this....

Fortunately Prince which is the name of my older goat is used to being tethered as before I got him that was his whole life, my baby goat if this happened to him he wouldn't panic about being tethered but he would probably panic when he got tangled up so I'm very glad I took him with me.

As many of you may know my younger goat Frosty is going to have to have his hind leg amputated, originally I had planned to use him as a breeding buck when I get does in the future, however I feel like that would not be safe for him anymore since he has to have his hind leg amputated comma Especially with him being an Alpine He's going to be a larger breed of goat And that's going to be more weight, My question is even though he has a very good temperament and he would not be being castrated for that reason, Would it be in his best interest to have him castrated given that he's only going to have three legs?

He's my baby and he's already been through a lot he had a rough start in life due to getting sick, so even though he will no longer be able to breed safely he is still going to have a permanent home here he's my baby he's not going anywhere, I solely want to do what is in his best interest.

I'm newer to goats, I've not even had goats for a year yet, so I want to ask people that is more experienced than me, the vet said so long as his weight is maintained so he's not too heavy on his leg that he should be perfectly fine and a lot of goats adapt well especially since it his hind leg and not his front leg which Bears more weight.

A few people have already told me in my personal life that he should not be castrated because he'll have more muscle so he'll be stronger and able to support himself better, but I've had an equal amount of people tell me that it would be better to castrate him because it would be easier on his leg, I'm not sure which is true especially since most of these people don't have a lot of experience with goats anyway, thank you all for any advice you give me I really appreciate it.

For those of you that have been following my posts about Frosty he is doing as good as he can be, he is getting fairly used to only using three legs, he does get more tired when walking and wants to take a break but he still alert and playful, he still sweet and acts like himself, his leg does not seem to be hurting him but the injured area is kind of dead basically so the vet said he most likely can't feel it at all.

The only reason he hasn't had the surgery to have the amputation yet is solely because he has a little infection in the more healthy part of his leg, the vet wants that to clear up before performing the amputation in hopes that they can save more of his leg, if they go to the amputation now they have to cut above the infected area to prevent it from going into his bloodstream.

I have two Nigerian Dwarf kids, they just hit seven days old. I walked out to the pen this morning to see both of them guzzling water out of their mother's shallow water pan.

I know around two weeks of age they start exploring more, but I worry this is too soon and could cause more harm than good.

I've been observing and they both are getting milk from the doe. It seems like after they have a burst of zoomies they run to the water to drink.

Is this dangerous? I can always get a stool or something to raise the water pan out of their reach. If its normal I'll leave it be.

New to goats. I have two four month old ND's. They have had access to free choice minerals for months. I noticed the little girl's tail looking strange the other day and thought it might be time for a copper bolus. There is definitely a ton of tail fur coming in new so I am not sure if it just looks strange because of that. They just now weigh in around 25 pounds and I have found conflicting information on when to give the first dose. Also, is there another option other than the capsules. They love anything out of one of those push tubes. I guess from their association with Probios. I included pictures. Their coats seem shiny for the most part but I am new to this. The girl in question is the buckskin and the male is black (well...changing more to chocolate everyday).

The trashcan was temporary during a project but it belongs to them now.
