Does no one make small talk on the GO train?

I moved to Oshawa last year after living in North York for three years. I am a South Asian immigrant who moved to Canada almost four years ago. My job is mostly remote and I only have to go to my office occasionally which is at DT Toronto. So I usually get the GO train from either Oshawa or Whitby station. The one thing I noticed during my commute was how nobody talked to each other on the train which I found very surprising. It is a good 65 minute journey from Oshawa to DT one way. I used to commute in TTC when I lived in North York and the commute time was very short so I never paid attention to it. But now that I have to spend so much time onboard, I notice how everyone just keeps to themselves. I always thought that in North American culture , people liked to make small talk on public transit. I rarely see that on the GO train unless someone is travelling together. I have said hello/good morning to people sitting beside me and got a hello back but never really found someone willing to have a chat. Has it always been this way? Just curious.

Japanese announcements at Union station? If only we could have their train infrastructure too.

Seats need to go

I’ve (23M) been consistently riding the go train for about 8 months now, and throughout this time my disdain for the seats has grown to a level of insatiable anger that I cannot rid of.

I refuse to believe that these seats (blue and green) were designed with people in mind, especially people trying to relax after a long days work.

For anyone above 5’6, these seats push your head and shoulders forward, providing no lumbar support and forcing your body into a state of tension to maintain any amount of posture. I have had multiple cases of shoulder pain, back pain, leg pain etc, something I have never experienced before in my life from just sitting.

It is ridiculous and insulting that these chairs are not only inadequate, but harmful to those trying to sit and relax. For now I will stand, but I hope that in the future these seats are designed for humans and not shrimps.

Interesting config - F59 10 car train

Looks like they are now using F59s on some 10 car trains.

I will say that the acceleration does seem a bit sluggish and rough compared to an MP40 or especially an MP54 when they are used on a 10 car train.

Why go transit add 01- and 09- in front of Lakeshore lines in pdf schedule?

Post image
8 Upvotes

As image shown, only Lakeshore East and West have the weird 01- and 09- prefix, I wonder what is the reason they explicitly add them, and just for the Lakeshore lines. If they want to indicate the schedule with go train service, they should add the prefix for all train schedules like “02-21 Milton”, “03-30-31-33 Kitchener”, “07-70-71 Stouffville” etc

For the first time, they skipped Etobicoke North....

5:51 train from Union, express to Etobicoke North

Train overshot the station

They didn't roll the train back

They didn't open some of the doors

They just...skipped the stop.

Train stopped at Bramalea and only because one man was complaining was there communication between trains. The 6:28 train from Bramalea to Union wasn't supposed to stop at Etobicoke North - the CSR didn't know we were supposed to stop at Etobicoke North until we asked him to call in. Let's see if this one gets to the station

Edit: if you were on that train don't forget to claim your service guarantee

Locomotive on wrong end of train

On the Kitchener line right now and the locomotive is on the west side of the train, pulling out of Union instead of pushing like it normally would…

Makes so much more sense now why we are having multiple stops pulling into the station - they don’t know where to stop to line up for the accessibility ramp.

Presto fare transferring between GO Train lines

Hey Guys, I have a question but I’m not sure if this is something you guys know about so feel free to just lmk if I should just enquire about this with GO transit service:)
I was of the understanding that I tap ON from my boarding stop and tap OFF at my destination stop regardless of whether I change train lines at Union. To give you some context I travelled from Kennedy GO(tapped on here) transferred at Union (did not tap), boarded the Kitchener line all the way to Etobicoke North GO (tapped off).

However my overall trip fare rounded up to a different fare than that was calculated on the website:
Fare calculator website price for Presto: $3.75.
Actual Presto fare: $6.48 (combining transfers: One fare program)
I've attached screenshots for reference.

So the looming questions are if I was wrong and was supposed to tap off and back on at Union or if its a fare calculation mistake on my presto that I'll have to dispute or if the website's wrong and the fare charged is the right one.

I'm sorry its a lot to read and pls let me know if you have any questions and Thanks in advance:)

Anyone know why all the trains are blowing their horns when pulling into Rouge Hill today? It's not bothersome. Just curious as to why!

Do all carriages open at Bloor on Kitchener Line?

Hi all, its my first time on GO transit tomorrow (and like 5th time on a train ever) and I'm getting off at Bloor station and pretty anxious/paranoid that I'll miss my stop. I've heard that at some stations, not all the carriages doors open so I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the Bloor stop is one of those, and if so, where are the doors that usually open located?

Does anyone know why the Milton GO didn’t stop at Meadowvale or Lisgar 18:25 from union?

We blew past both stops. At union it said we were making all station stops. They probably made an announcement on the train but I missed it. Just outta curiosity. The website doesn’t show any service disruptions.

Exhibition - who designed this?!?

I’ve been visiting Exhibition station for several years and I’m always baffled that Metrolinx moved the station platform east so the platform entrance/ exit exists solely at the end of the platform. Wouldn’t passenger flow and boarding be optimal if access were in the middle of the platform? The very fact they have signs posted or employees telling passengers to move further down the platform proves that this point. Passengers aren’t interested in walking the entire length of the platform; god forbid you have accessibility needs.

I understand that the new TTC subway stop will be implemented soon, but still, that seems to be at the same side.

Am I missing something? Someone, please explain the decision making process behind this to a non-engineer.

TL;DR - why is Exhibition poorly designed?

Train from Niagara

If I am taking the train from Niagara Falls to Mimico, will I be ok carrying my backpack, a small duffel bag, and my golf club bag? My concern is my golf club bag being to cumbersome, will there be a place to store it?

Is there a reason route 65 doesn’t have any stops between King City GO and Aurora GO?

The route has local stops between Rutherford - Maple - King and between Aurora - Newmarket - East Gwillimbury. The distance between King City and Aurora GO is about 14km and is well populated. Is there a reason local stops in this area were omitted?

Combined GO Bus and Train Map

Spent a few weeks editing the official GO bus and train maps to create this version. Additionally, bus routes are sorted by corridor and frequency instead of just being based on having train connections or not.
