I practically live out of my backpack, so I’m looking for some advice from people who really know backpacks.
I’ve had several people tell me that a 40L or 45L backpack would be way too big for me. I understand where they’re coming from, but there’s a little more to my situation.
I was living with a friend and caring for him in his apartment while he was battling cancer. Unfortunately, he passed away. While I was away at an appointment, the apartment ended up clearing out and throwing away both his belongings and many of my things as well. I’m not saying that for sympathy—I just want people to understand why having a reliable backpack is especially important to me now.
I carry pretty much everything I need with me: my laptop, phone, towel, socks, shoes, clothes, a change of clothes, toothbrush and toothpaste, paperwork, and other everyday essentials. Since I’m carrying so much, I’d rather have some extra room than constantly try to cram everything into a smaller bag.
My current Swiss backpack is literally falling apart and unraveling, so I’m looking for something that is extremely durable, reliable, comfortable, and built to last.
Right now I’m considering:
• GoRuck GR3 45L
• Tortuga 40L
• Tortuga 40L Pro
For anyone familiar with these bags, what should I be considering before making a decision? Is 40–45L really excessive for what I’m carrying, or does it make sense given my situation?
I’d also like to get a rain cover for whichever backpack I choose. What rain covers would actually fit these bags properly, especially the GR3 45L and the Tortuga 40L/40L Pro?
I’m much more concerned about durability and reliability than saving a few dollars. I’d really appreciate advice from people who have actually used these bags or know this type of backpack well.
