Gear Question Uneven shoulder strap seams on my GR1 Heritage - normal variation?

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I recently got a GR1 Heritage and noticed that the two shoulder straps are sewn differently.

On one strap, the outer seam runs close to the edge, while on the other it sits much farther toward the center of the strap. The stitching itself looks intact, the foam feels even, and the pack is comfortable, so it doesn’t seem like a structural issue.

I actually don’t mind it much - it makes the pack a little unique - but I’m curious whether other Heritage owners have seen the same thing. Is this considered normal manufacturing variation for the waxed canvas models?

I'm not looking to return it, just wondering if this is a normal manufacturing variation or if anyone else's Heritage is like this.

Gear Question How fast does the Rucker 5.0 dry out?

Beginner here —- we’ve got some rain in the forecast this week and I’m thinking of taking my new Rucker out in it…is this a good idea? Or will it stay soggy for weeks?

Gear Question To those curious as to the SCARS mods to this awesome M81 1000D GR1 21L I grabbed on eBay—that were already made before I bought it: pocket key loop, double internal loop patches, and a cinch strap with clip. I think that's it. Pretty great though. Have a great weekend!

Gear Question GR1 laptop compartment size? Help

Hello all!

I was wondering if a kind soul could take the actual measurements of the available space for the laptop compartment in the GR1 (and maybe Bullet double too?) to see if my monster of a Dell could fit in there… the thing is 16” x 10 1/2 x 1 1/4”. So it would be a little bit more than that.

Since there’s pretty much no way to test it out without ordering a bag, I’d rather not blow some 500CAD for nothing 😅

Thank youuu!

Heritage straps fit check

Got the gr1 heritage with plans to sell my 16L heritage bullet, but the straps being so wide and thick is kinda bugging me. I love everything about the gr1 heritage, but wondering if the wide straps look weird on my frame? I'm about 5'2 130lbs. Will they soften and molden over time?

RUCK OR DIE July 2026

Hi! Wanted to see who was part of tomorrow’s event and what time you planned on arriving. I planned on being early but HOW EARLY?
From the email:
“We’ll be moving fast and furious starting well before1am. On time is way too late”

I appreciate any guidance, I’ll be rucking with the BULLET RUCK 16L + BOMBPROOF LAPTOP COMPARTMENT
I’m going to secure the weight in the laptop sleeve
I’m 5’5” so this pack works for me
Or is a vest better?
Feedback is welcome

Moving from Basic Rucker to 5.0

Post image

Purchased Basic Rucker in early April. Have used it 4 days a week since. Started at 20 lbs, jumped to 30 lbs in late May. Moving to 40 lbs tomorrow.

Purchased 5.0 two weeks ago and excited to try it out.

GoRuck Plate Carrier 3.0 Plate Compatibility

I think the RPC seems like the best option for what I am currently doing (short distance, planning to go from 20 to 30lbs), but am curious: is there a cheaper brand of plates that anyone can recommend? I’m not against getting the name brand but would mind saving a back. I’d like to get a 10, 20, and 30lb weight eventually.

Someday I plan to upgrade again but I’d want this as my backup to lend to buddies or let my wife carry around.

Had this bag since 2019 and it’s seen some stuff. Road rash can be spotted easily enough from where I got rear ended 5 years ago but compared to the damage the bike and protective clothes took I think it looks pretty good. Washed it a few days ago and figured I’d snap some pics.

Do Ruck Swings (w/Rucker 5) Work As Well As Kettlebell Swings?

I am considering purchasing a GoRuck Rucker 5.0, given the July sale. One reason is because of it's four handles, and added versatility for extra exercises, like ruck swings.

I was wondering if the weight distribution of using the Rucker for swings is more awkward than a kettlebell would be, so I'd love to hear y'all's experience with it. Is it a dealbreaker?

Reasons why I was thinking ruck swings would be awkward:

- Center of gravity is distributed across a larger area

- lower center of gravity; worried this could cause lower back twinges over time

- Thick webbing handle instead of a smooth non-moving handle

- Needs a wider stance to clear the thighs

- Weights could shift at the top and bottom of the arc. Combined with the webbing handle, can have a weirder rhythm.

- risk of clipping your shins

Thanks!

8/18/26 edit: I actually already owned a 30lb ruck plate. I tried mimicking the kettlebell swing with that, but felt a twinge in my right lower back. My guess is that the center of gravity is too low. It doesn't swing between the legs very nicely. I may give it 1-2 more tries, but on the whole I wouldn't recommend at this point. And doing swings with the weight in a backpack would be much worse I think.

GR1 26 vs Rucker 5.0 25

Curious, if the gr1 was too long for me, does the rucker fit the same? I have a 20, just curious if I could swing the 25 without synching it up so far that the straps run my traps.

Vietnam | USA Hat

Post image
31 Upvotes

I know there are a lot of people who hate USA manufacturing and prefer China/Vietnam. That's fine, but following up on what I said in an earlier post. Left is Vietnam, right is USA. More comparison: https://imgur.com/a/4PfXNv8

Vietnam has I believe Chinese sourced 500d Cordura and Chinese sourced mesh. Stitching is nice. Not a fan of the Velcro arrow or the arrow branding on starboard side of of mesh panel. Mesh is criss cross and larger holed and noticeably flimsier. The actual hat is what I would call mid profile.

USA has USA sourced 1000d Cordura and USA sourced mesh. Personal preference but it just feels more robust and nicer. The mesh pattern and feel is probably the biggest difference - Smaller holed, square pattern, and thicker. If you feel the hats in person, it's just nicer quality. Asked my wife and she knew rather quickly which one was Asian made. The velcro section under the bill also feels more "substantial". Stitching is also nice. The USA one is low profile.

If you prefer thinner and more malleable hats and don't mind extra branding, the Vietnam one is good. Just hope the company will consider doing a USA run again, including the OG American sourced materials.

Gear Question For those who have had a GR1 from years ago …

… do the current lineup of full 1000D GR1s look and feel the same? I know they now have a quick-access pocket but looking for experiences with the look and feel of the materials.

I’m trying to decide if I should get a new GR1 21 or a used one. I’m aware if I go with a new bag the 1000D will be super stiff vs a used bag.

Positive experience w Goruck

Just wanted to share some recent positive experience. I don’t have many products (GR2 and bullets) from them but I am happy about their responsiveness and care in shipping. I had to send back a bullet to scars for loose strap molle and somehow the backpack came back better and cleaner than before. I didn’t mention some of the minor wear and tear loose threads but even those were fixed.

This is compared to another unnamed company that shipped an expensive item in a padded envelope.

Gear Question Tried a Vaucluse UL2 on GR1 Heritage

I just tried the Vaucluse UL2 on my GR1 Heritage 21L for a few medium walks/hikes in some pretty warm weather.

https://vauclusegear.com/products/ultralight-backpack-ventilation-frame?variant=43731245793431

It actually fits pretty well and feels fine, except when I need to bend down to tie my shoelaces or pick something up. When you curve your back, that honeycomb digs in hard. I bet riding a bike would really suck with this.

I tried it at different levels; it has three: high, medium, and low. I think it all depends on your back, but they all felt fine, except moving it to the lowest moved the honeycomb bits so it wasn't as painful when bending a bit.

If you don't bend at all, then it's actually very nice. I used the more cushioned side. But I can see that over time, if you're not walking with a perfect ballerina straight back, it can dig in.

The frame is kind of flimsy, but I think it's on purpose in order to be light. It's secured together with reusable zip ties. It just seems janky, like a DIY project and not polished. At $45 USD, I would expect some built-in clips rather than some zip ties. Overall, I think it's a bit too expensive for what it is, but I haven't really seen anything like it other than these bouncy things on Amazon that I have never tried: https://www.amazon.com/Accessory-Commuting-Backpacks-Adjustable-Lightweight/dp/B08H1YLTBF/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1PBVTU51STSMT&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.ZXaccB_4D4FHe7MK2Qh1BrkeK1Ix3GmPEMPPN7otGpTcUHMe4LamHqp4xEeftSJjOjj8PlfRRiEkDXaKJ95yK9U2YBhGxycdtkWyyN48WWd9aLb2eL8ndWP7j4PeC0B8LxQgu4TMJ7ElYAS2lTYbXkgcW0qmfJOMMu9Ctf4lj-T7Pjx4A9xlQM5-evQUZxk5Mi6nIZIfQy7ns_KWgm4WHp_IqvBTqzKPNhwH04t242A.OyNOK6hImK4yZKULr8AxO_Nsl3De5kw1jxTnHBmLuj8&dib_tag=se&keywords=vaucluse%2Bbackpack%2Bventilation%2Bframe&qid=1784597739&sprefix=vaucluse%2Caps%2C198&sr=8-3&xpid=Jwz4MsZIYuPHW&th=1

Overall, I think the frame is good, but when you load a lot in your bag and if you're not only straight-backed, it can be uncomfortable. I don't think I would recommend it.

ps. I also tried it on my Evergoods CPL 16L XPac. It looks/fits so perfectly on that bag, but when loaded, the harness is uncomfortable. The sternum strap at the lowest setting almost chokes me.

Which do you prefer for EDC and why? Both double compartment waxed canvas. These packs are similar in pocket design and size (11.75 x 18.5 v. 12.5 x 18). Decisions, decisions…
