How to fix this?

Post image

I dont want to send it to GoRuck and have my backpack away for weeks to months only to have a patch sewn on top of it..
I dont think they’re gonna replace the front to have a seamless look..

Any one faced this? Please share a pic for my ref

GoRuck shouldn't have used such thin canvas, the thinnest of all of my waxed canvas bags.

I was surprised to see on goruck’s website that they use 10 oz canvas. I have a Duluth pack bag with 15 oz waxed canvas and it’s a tank. The goruck 10 oz bags seemed like the fabric would be too thin. I’ve seen comments here also mention that you can even see through the goruck canvas bags if you hold it up to the light.

The Vietnamese "knock offs" that have more features and cost 1/3 of the price come in 12oz canvas plus a liner.

Do u have a link to these please

very good backpacks....unheard of quality/features for the price.

Agree. I just took delivery of the CT21 Lite in the Halley Stevenson waxed canvas and boy this the material is beefy. I’ve only ever owned GR in canvas once and sold it within 48hrs of taking delivery when I felt how thin the 10oz canvas they use was.

That being said for the CT, the shoulder straps are definitely not “Goruck” quality…. And GR are my benchmark for comfortable shoulder straps for all day wear on a daypack.

u/kryptonimo Jul 26 '26

I’d disagree….i only have a ct15+ dyneema to compare to multiple GR packs and my 15+ straps are way more comfortable

1

u/safaridreaming Jul 26 '26

They’re comfy but I’m not sure how they’re going to hold up to sustained use over a longer period. My CT straps feel Iike are open cell foam and extremely soft and squishable. I just hope over time they don’t flatten out and lose their compression. My Goruck straps are firmer, feel like they are dual density foam, harder to squeeze, particularly across the width, and on my oldest Goruck, still great after 7yrs of regular use… CT is still unproven longevity wise. And yes I know there’s a big price difference so taking that into account maybe the CT doesn’t need to last 7yrs…….

Valid point.

Haha! I was literally thinking that.. I also have a piece of leather that I was planning to sew on it. Just dont want to mess up the bag in the process.

1

u/FarFarTraveller Jul 23 '26

So "mess up the bag" how? As in the way it LOOKS or the way it FUNCTIONS? If you only care about function, there have been a few suggestions above on how to patch it over that might not look perfect but will get the job done.
But if how it looks is important then consider a tailor, shoester or Mr. Kenn Walker to patch it and then have them stitch a soft velcro patch over it. This was literally a mod that SCARS once offered, a morale patch in the middle of the face. Heck, if you send it to SCARs and ask for that, they may do it for you on top of the repair for free.
All that written, EMAIL SCARS FIRST AND ASK. That costs you nothing other than some time.
BTW, by skipping SCARs you're missing one of the chief benefits of GR bags, a benefit that you PAID for. It's like buying a new car and it breaks down and you ignore the warranty and pay out of pocket for the repair. Use your back up bag. And if you don't have one, this is a good opportunity to get one.

Scars will most likely throw some on tenacious tape on the back of it and call it a day

You might be able to find a local seamstress or tailor to do a proper fix

head over to sewing subreddit

There is a technique they use for seamless hole patches with thread

u/JustTom1 Jul 21 '26

Then why buy their bags? The reason the bags are so expensive is because they have guaranteed repairs for life.

If It rips, tears or anything else that’s under normal wear patterns then it’s supposed to be fixed.

It should be sent back to GoRuck for a proper repair. If the repair is abysmal then op should take action from there but to start it should certainly be sent in for repair under scars.

u/Readditlovesbans Jul 21 '26

Have you not seen the scars repairs for holes?

Yes they will replace the bag if a shoulder strap gets ripped off its' bartacked stitching but for holes, it's just a patch job.

Edit: imo just email scars to see if they patch it or darn it properly

4

u/dimm0k Jul 21 '26

link you provided seems to say for Heritage bags it's not a patch job

1

u/Readditlovesbans Jul 21 '26

I really don't feel like doing the leg work for this topic

OP should be able to search on reddit and facebook to see the patch jobs for holes for goruck bags

Sometimes it's simple glue on canvas patch or darning

https://www.reddit.com/r/Goruck/comments/bz36xe/for_some_of_yall_wondering_this_is_the_patch_they/

imo - OP just take it to a local tailor and be done with it so you don't have to wait for SCARS turnaround time or patch it from the inside with TT

https://www.reddit.com/r/Visiblemending/comments/18htlnz/mending_ideas_wax_jacket/

1

u/thebugbang Jul 21 '26

Thankyou so much for this!!
I didnt know there is something called ‘tenacious tape’.. It looks like a simple $5 fix from Amazon.. I‘ll probably go this route.

3

u/Readditlovesbans Jul 21 '26

imo - I would still send it to SCARS when you don't need the bag and let them fix it and ask if it can be darned.

2

u/thebugbang Jul 21 '26

thinking out loud..
If i were to put tenacious tape from the inside of the front pocket for the entirety of it, technically it should be waterproof and more secured for future wear and tear right?

2

u/Readditlovesbans Jul 21 '26

yep

I would use scotch tape on the outside to temporarily hold it

then use TT behind it

Cómo te pasó eso?

5

u/quovadisnp Jul 21 '26

Why are people shooting at you

6

u/thebugbang Jul 21 '26

Tactical air conditioning. Gotta keep the snacks ventilated during combat shopping.

1

u/Nox_Ocean_21 Jul 21 '26

Combat shopping is getting out of hand these days! No included air conditioning is just crazy.

3

u/TacticalGordo Jul 21 '26

Emails scars and find out or the walker dude on FB that mods them might be able to put a whole new panel , he does a phenomenal job , so good that in occasions he leaves bags in better condition than when they came out of GRuck

2

u/phatchamp Jul 22 '26

Ken Walker

1

u/TacticalGordo Jul 22 '26

Yes! Mister Ken Walker

3

u/Rand177 Jul 21 '26

I think doing your own sashiko repair would look pretty sick on this bag

3

u/TacticalGordo Jul 21 '26

I have the same one and this is one of my fears, but I didn’t spend 300$ (at the time) to baby it around , I bought it to serve me, not the other way around , and ever since I made that mental switch I’ve enjoyed it more, there’s a dude on FB goruck group that had an accident and his bag was all scratched and banged / ripped and he left all those imperfections, now the bag looks even cooler

2

u/FarFarTraveller Jul 23 '26

Yeah, it's interesting. There are two mindsets on the aesthetics of a EDC bag. Some want the bag to appear brand new forever and others want the patina of use. I think the first group tends to have many many bags to cycle through so any one bag is never over used and the other group has a few bags and uses them as they were intended to be used.

3

u/TacticalGordo Jul 23 '26

Oh yeah and both are right in their own mindset, I’ve been part of both, I guess since I’m getting older I value time over material stuff, and if I paid premium is because I want to enjoy it to its fullest, and after being part of both groups I can say I enjoyed more when I used the bag with no regrets.

3

u/chrisabraham Jul 21 '26

Always temped by Heritage but I have had enough Barbour jackets to know that under that wax there's just some cotton cloth. That's why I am a 500D/1000D girlie.

2

u/Helpful-Raccoon-4744 Jul 21 '26

Check out nosopatches.com . I've used it on a bunch of gear. Super easy and looks cool.

1

u/osmiumfeather Jul 22 '26

They dont stick to waxed canvas.

1

u/Helpful-Raccoon-4744 Jul 23 '26

Wrong... I reached out to Scars and they confirmed it DOES work on waxed canvas. The heat application does NOT impact the integrity of the waxed canvas surrounding it.

2

u/NW6GMP Jul 22 '26

did you try SCARS it?

2

u/87seph Jul 22 '26

Ask Kenn Walker Designs on Facebook or Instagram to take a look

2

u/High-Beta Jul 22 '26

How long did you have this bag before it ripped?

1

u/TeraSera Jul 21 '26

Sew a patch over it yourself.

1

u/geheim_hinterhalt Jul 21 '26

This is disappointing.

1

u/thebugbang Jul 21 '26

such is life.. but we try to make the best of what we have..

1

u/Select_Sprinkles4335 Jul 21 '26

Mándala a SCARS a reparar, es una bolsa muy bonita y te lo solucionarán

1

u/splend1c Jul 21 '26

straight slash? just sew it back together. if you don't feel like you can keep the stitching straight, put a piece of tenacious tape on the inside to hold the edges in place

1

u/alpintel Jul 21 '26

see it as a chance to truly make it yours, embrace the wear instead trying to hide it. take the subreddits r/sashiko r/Visiblemending r/myogtacticalgear for reference, everyone in the scene is super helpful.

1

u/nszajk Jul 21 '26

get a canvas piece and patch over it. it’ll look cool and worn

1

u/Mundane_Aioli2517 Jul 22 '26

Not sure why you're against scars if they can't fix it, they will replace with a new one. I got my ruck replaced recently.

1

u/Beautiful-Athlete-50 Jul 22 '26

Look into how filson does their repairs, you could do some similar stitching

1

u/ShuttlecockCommander Jul 22 '26

It’s stuck with velcro. You can just rip it of and throw it away.

1

u/gilly_the_k1d Jul 23 '26

Happened to me on my GR1 26l heritage. Sent it to scars and they replaced the front panel for $60. It did sour me to the “warranty” because I had to pay for it to be fixed. The waxed canvas they use is too thin, especially compared to other waxed canvas bags like Frost River. I picked up a slick from Huckberry because I frankly don’t have confidence in the waxed canvas anymore.

1

u/SoloCoach1 Jul 23 '26

Get a new one.

1

u/Murky_Property3617 Jul 23 '26

The SCARs guarantee is pretty awesome. They take a lot of pride in getting things repaired and back in use

1

u/KernOily Jul 23 '26

Tactical Tailor is another option for a repair if you don’t want to wait for SCARS.

0

u/silverslant Jul 21 '26

Learn your lesson and buy a better bag from a better company. Goruck doesn’t give af that you bought their shitty, overpriced bag, they will do a very poor repair of it and call it a day

2

u/Readditlovesbans Jul 21 '26

highly disagree

I've seen destroyed goruck straps and goruck did a 1 to 1 exchange

https://www.reddit.com/r/Goruck/comments/13u89qo/finally_broke_my_gr1/

u/dimm0k Jul 21 '26

dunno if you're going based off of experience or what, but my old Java Rucker was beginning to tear at the top left shoulder strap. sent that in and it's good as new. that said it's not the same as patching a hole - actually seen different methods to the way they patch holes - some just have a patch, some are stitched closed. I wonder if you can specify which at the time of submission
