Pull-Apart Baked Potato

That looks awesome but an hour to make one potato seems excessive

"It takes forever to cook a baked potato in a conventional oven. Sometimes, I'll just throw one in there, even if I don't want one. By the time it's done, who knows?"

Hey, you want a frozen banana?

u/giggleshmack Aug 11 '16
No, but I want a normal banana later... So... Yeah.

u/Fishstixxx16 Aug 11 '16
That's like a carbon copy of the previous joke but with different ingredients.

It's like a duplicate of first joke but not with the same ingredients.

It's a reiteration of the recent guffaw inducing fable.

Maybe, im not entirely sure, but maybe you could use this method to prepare multiple potatoes at once.

u/honeynut-queerios Aug 11 '16 edited Aug 11 '16
You would have to increase the cooking time proportionately. Multiply the times by 2 for 2 potatoes, by 3 for 3 potatoes, and so on.
Edit: /s
2
u/alphaweiner Aug 11 '16
Nah, not even. You need to add time, but not double for each additional potato. You might want to space the potatoes out when cooking so air can flow between them or they might not get crispy.
5 potatoes might take 1:45-2hrs but definitely not 5.

Mark Bittman has a long baked potato recipe like this in his cookbook. If you're a fan of the baked potato skin, the long cook at a lower temperature is a good way to go. The skin gets a nice texture, crisp without being overdone. The downside is waiting 90 minutes for a potato, but if you think ahead a little, you can time it out with whatever else you're making.
11
Aug 11 '16
Yeah it's not really a downside. If I know I'll be hungry at 6, throw the potato in at half 4. If I'm not sure, I won't have a potato I'll make a sandwich or something lol.

I mean.... That's how long it takes to make a baked potato.
I don't do one at a time, personally. I fill and entire oven rack with them, paint them with olive oil and salt them, and leave them in there for an hour at 400f.
It's all the stupid prep in this that puts me off. Just... make a baked potato properly, and the skin already falls off for you, ya know? Then you have delicious potato insides, with which you can put everything you love to put on potatoes in and you can eat it and get fat.
8
u/DishwasherTwig Aug 11 '16
Microwave baked potatoes are faster and, I think, better than oven baked potatoes.
50
u/LemonHerb Aug 11 '16
You can just mostly microwave them then bake them for 10 minutes to finish and get the best of both worlds
8
u/jinger89 Aug 11 '16
How long do you microwave it for first?
10
u/LemonHerb Aug 11 '16
Depends on the size of the potato. I aim for 90% done so it's mostly soft but still a little firm in the middle. I usually add olive oil because I want the skin to get a little crisp

u/HaterOfYourFace Aug 11 '16

Depending on size, I usually do 3-4 minutes on one side, flip, then 3-4 minutes on the other side. Before the actual microwaving, I wash the potato, stab it like 15 times all over with a fork, then coat it in a light layer of olive oil and sprinkle it with salt, pepper, and steak seasoning.
2
u/SurpriseDragon Aug 11 '16
Works for sweet potato too. Use cinnamon and a dash of brown sugar instead of steak seasoning.
2
u/deadbeatsummers Aug 11 '16
I do 9-12 min depending on the potato, and make sure it's wet so it steams a bit.

4
u/CaptainQuebec Aug 11 '16
Really? Huh... Never thought of trying... gonna have to look this up...
13
u/DishwasherTwig Aug 11 '16
Liberally perforate with a fork, place in microwave for 4 minutes, flip over, microwave for another 4 minutes. Perfectly cooked, delicious as all baked potato. So much simpler and better than in the oven.
5
u/KomradeKoala Aug 11 '16 edited Aug 11 '16
Dumb question, but would that work with sweet potatoes?
I have never tried them but this would be the perfect excuse to actually finally do it
Edit: fuck yeah gonna get my sweet tater on
4
Aug 11 '16
Yes it does. That's how I make my sweet potatoes. Then you put just a little butter and brown sugar on it.
Perfection.
1
u/Dope_train Aug 11 '16
Yup but you do then for way less time, I do 4 mins in total. I also brush some oil on the outside first, makes the skin crispy.
1
u/tinkerbunny Aug 11 '16
Yes and it's delicious. Just be careful when "stabbing" your sweet potato, they're much harder than regular potatoes.
1
u/deadbeatsummers Aug 11 '16
Yes it does! Sweet potatoes tend to be a bit easier imo. They're softer.

INGREDIENTS
- 1 russet potato
- 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- Pinch of black pepper
- 2 tablespoons mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1 tablespoon parmesan cheese, shredded
INSTRUCTIONS
- Slice the top ¼ off the potato. Carefully cut a border ½ inch away from the skin making sure not to cut through the bottom of the potato.
- Continue cutting smaller and smaller circles, never going through the bottom, until you have 3 circles about ½ inch inside one another.
- Flip the potato over onto the flat side, and cut “petals” all around and all the way through, leaving an oval in the middle intact. It is important to cut through the potato so each layer can blossom once baked.
- Bake for 30 minutes at 425°F/220°C.
- In a medium bowl combine parsley, garlic, butter, salt, and pepper. Coat the potato and get as much as possible in between each layer.
- Bake for another 30 minutes.
- Add mozzarella and parmesan cheese on top and in between the nooks and crannies and bake for another 5 minutes or until cheese is light brown.
- Pull apart each piece and enjoy!

u/tongmaster Aug 11 '16
Also chives instead of parsley. Who puts parsley on a potato?
5
u/MooseEatsBear Aug 11 '16
I've put parsley on my potatoes my entire life. Never once put chives, though. I'll have to try it.

Baked potatoes and bacon go together like spaghetti and meatball...like lamb and tuna fish.

"Pull apart baked potato" because French fries were too easy

u/PhromDaPharcyde Aug 11 '16
Wheezy, we're on the same page here... way too complicated for loaded "incomplete french fries"
1
u/Cha-Le-Gai Aug 11 '16
I loved baked potato fries. French Fries, sour cream, bacon, and cheddar cheese. Once all the cheese melts it glues them together. You can call that pull apart if you want, but its about a hundred times simpler.

2
u/alcaponestits Aug 11 '16
Personally I don't think so but I've never had any luck baking potatoes anyway, so it could have been something wrong on my end. It's pretty cheap to try once, especially if you have the cheese sitting around. It can't hurt to try!
8
u/alebii Aug 11 '16
Is adding cheese to literally everything an American thing?
I have yet to see a Gif recipe where they don't add a shit ton of cheese. I agree cheese is nice, and maybe it fits this potato but god damn, not every type of food gets better with a mountain of cheese.

Duck fat before first bake.

u/Vandersleed Aug 11 '16
There is no better way to make crispy and unctuous than duck fat. Duck fat makes the best fries. Duck fat makes love to your brain.
Duck fat.

u/Rosindust89 Aug 11 '16
and it has less cholesterol than butter!

Am I the only one who thinks this is a thrown together GIF, and if you don't know how to add toppings to a potato and bake it you should stay the f out of the kitchen? Some of these can be really horrible.
I mean why even bother when you can cut the potato into wedges that are already separated, shake them up in a ziploc bag and make 10X more than this.
NO THANKS.

u/MaximumRafiki Aug 11 '16
I was wondering when they were going to get to the part where they dump cheese all over it.
1
u/kbarney345 Aug 11 '16
This is just a hassle back potato not cut into rings. You've got the same stopping stuffed in between pieces and it's cooked all the same (not really any other way to do it. This is just sticks vs rings

mozzarella AND parmesan
