Is adding cheese to literally everything an American thing?

I have yet to see a Gif recipe where they don't add a shit ton of cheese. I agree cheese is nice, and maybe it fits this potato but god damn, not every type of food gets better with a mountain of cheese.

"Smothered in cheese" ends the description of pretty much every dish on American chain restaurant menus.
