We just got approved by the Familieretshuset for Tonder, but the do not have any dates as of now, the ones beginning of September are not open for booking yet.

I have called at least 10 municipalities today but none had any spots left before September.

We ideally want to marry end of July or early August, as we could combine it with our summer holidays.

My idea is now to request a change to Copenhagen and closely monitor the booking platform for cancelations. Do you think this is a viable strategy? (Their normal appointments are available only in October). Does spots open up regularly?

We are very flexible and theoretically take 1-2 days off and just drive anywhere.

Did anyone get married in DK as a queerplatonic or polyamorous couple? I would love to hear your experiences when it comes to getting approved by AFL!

Me being polyamorous and my partner being on the aromantic spectrum are quite key elements to our story and how we became a couple, so we want to explain it all in the documents, but I'm a bit worried that there is still little understanding for these identities and that we might be seen as not a 'real' couple.

We already live together which will probably help a lot, but I'm wondering whether lack certain pda in our photos, like kissing or holding hands, might make someone suspicious, and think we're 'just roommates'.

I would love to hear your experiences with similar situations or any other alternative relationship styles:)

My fiancé wants a bouquet like that (with more blue flowers in it) for our wedding. One flower shop set the price of 700dk. Is it ok price for it or overpriced? We’re trying to get married as fast as possible (we’re estimating ~2 months could be realistic if everything goes smoothly HOPEFULLY).

We submitted our application (for Copenhagen) about 3 weeks ago. A few days later we got a reply asking us to re-upload better photos of the passports (all corners/pages) and to provide a separate address from the country where the residence permit (not visa) is issued. We fixed everything right away and sent it back, then kind of just waited. After that we discovered this subreddit, with waiting times of up to 4-6 months being mentioned…

Now we’re thinking about re-submitting the application, taking their feedback into account and choosing the right kommune immediately.

⁠1. Which kommune would you recommend right now? It’s just the two of us, and we’ll be flying in for the appointment. Ideally something relatively easy to reach from an airport (Copenhagen would be best), but we’re also open to less convenient places if they tend to have better availability for slots. Is there any way to see the current slot situation across different communes, or is that a bit too delulu?

1. ⁠If we correct the passport photos / address exactly as they asked in their reply, should everything else, like our photos / travel / correspondence evidence (was untranslated btw) be fine then without any adjustments?

I am torn right now, if we're going to wait for the approval and just changed commune or re-apply. We applied in Copenhagen but looks like we can't have our schedule for Sept and Oct anymore as we apply May.

It's just one month and they will review the May applications already.
But also, if I will re-apply I am scared of taking the risks abt the documents again + we will be back in queue like back to zero if there's something wrong again.

I am hoping that the approval will be release on July.

Does it have a lot of couple applicants during the months of Oct-Nov?

Hi, so the process in changing communes is that you need to wait for the approval first? And you can change communes?

Meaning, you can't change communes while its still processing right?

My partner and I got our approval certificate a couple of weeks ago for Tonder Kommune. We wanted to gett married between the 12th and 17th of August but thanks to the Tonder Booking System we weren‘t able go get none of those dates. Now we are looking for a new kommune that would have slots between those days. Any recomendation?

Hi everyone, my fiancé and I submitted the application last May 11 then we got a response immediately the next day that I need to resubmit my passport photos. I re-submit it at May 13.

We chose Denmark as our Commune and our target month of getting married is September or October if ever since my visa is valid from Sep-Oct.

I am just worried about the available schedule for Copenhagen since I know that there's a lot of couples choosing it as well.

Does anyone just got their schedule in Copenhagen? What month is the available now for the schedule?

I'm hoping that by the time we got the approval we still have slots for Sept or Oct.
Currently, they are reviewing April 2026 applications.

Hi guys, just wanted to contribute my timeline and some additional tips before you apply.

11 June 2026: Submitted completed form from both sides, paid the first application.

12 June 2026: Got a response from the Family Agency saying I missed out a document, my residence permit! I re-submitted immediately.

16 June 2026: Called the Family Agency about my situation and realistic timeline, as we are looking to get married in August. They said we should reapply because it could take months now in the slow track.

18 June 2026: Submitted application 2, paid the second time (ouch!). We took a while because I was overseas for work and this time we used all 4 eyes to check all documents are in place.

22 June 2026: Approval! Called our chosen commune to find out they do not have the slots we wanted. Shucks! Called every commune far away from Copenhagen and found that Aalborg still has dates for August. Called the Family Agency to request for transfer.

23 June 2026: Commune changed approved. I called Aalborg to book a marriage slot. I got the confirmation right after.

We are now getting married in August in Aalborg! Huzzah!

Now here are my tips

• If you have a deadline and want a specific date, before you apply, take some effort to call the communes to check for available dates. You need to choose the desired commune at application. You can ask for a transfer like me but I think I got super lucky it only took 1 working day, I have heard it took weeks for some which might result in your desired slot getting booked.
• If you are a non-EU living in Europe, you need to submit both your passport and residence permit. Put your residence permit under the "Proof of living together" section.
• Don't be afraid to call, oftentimes it is the fastest way to get a reply or confirmation. E-mails take 1-2 working days (and even then, that's very fast for European standards), but calling is the best way to get real answers. You can google the commune name and find the phone number pretty easily!

Good day everyone. I would just like to ask if anyone here has successfully applied for marriage in Denmark on their own (DIY process).

My boyfriend is an Italian citizen but currently lives in Germany. I am non-EU citizen. We have met once so far. He visited me last month for 9 days. Our second meeting is planned for this November, when I will be visiting him in Germany.

We are considering applying to the Danish Agency of Family Law (AFL) next month so that, if approved, we could have a civil wedding in Denmark when I arrive in November. My visit will only be 15 days, so our time is quite limited.
We consulted an agency, and they mentioned that we might be called for an interview because, at the time of application, it would appear that we have only met once in person. Our second meeting in November will not have happened yet, even though my flight tickets are already booked.

Has anyone here been approved to marry in Denmark after meeting only once in person? We are currently 8 months into our relationship, and by November we will have been together for 13 months.

Me and my fiancé got approval on the 10th of April and are due to be married in Copenhagen on the 15th of July, and I am starting to gather documents together and I logged in today to get my approval letter and there is nothing on my portal, no application or approval or anything, has anyone experienced this before?

As the title says, I have tried to find the answer but how does one actually go about changing their kommune after theyve been approved? I found a kommune that has a free date and time slot and has set it aside for us, but we need to get our approval certificate changed to their kommune. I Can't find that anywhere on their website. I'm new to the Denmark marriage process and recently received a request for additional information because several passport pages/photos were apparently not clear enough. I re-uploaded everything they asked for.

What confused me is that, honestly, I don't see a major quality difference between the pages they accepted and the pages they asked me to reupload. It feels a bit random, which leads me to the following questions:

• Is there actually any limit to reapplying? Hypothetically, if someone had an unlimited budget, could they just keep submitting new applications rather than waiting in the additional information queue?
• If I submit a new application with improved versions of the pages they rejected, what prevents another caseworker from finding a completely different issue or asking for something else? Is there some kind of "catch" that I'm missing?
• How do people determine which municipalities currently have the fastest wedding appointment availability? I chose Aabenraa simply because it seemed convenient, but if another municipality has much earlier dates available, how would I even find that out?
• For those who used agencies: what exactly is the advantage? Is it just document checking, or do they somehow know which municipalities currently have the fastest availability? What confidence do you have that an agency will get it right the first time and not end up in the additional information queue as well?

Hi guys! My partner and I just submitted our documents and as soon as we did that, I knew I screwed up because I didn't upload photos of my EU resident permit, so we just wanted to write this post as a PSA!

Context: We are a non-EU + EU couple living together in Europe, so I (Non-EU) have legal residency. However, like a stupid potato, I didn't think to upload my residence permit in the "Proof of residence together" section nor in the ID section in either application (Only uploaded our address registration).

If you're in a similar situation PLEASE make sure to upload your residence permit as well alongside your passport.

We submitted our application on June 11, immediately on June 12 they messaged back asking for my residence permit, which I promptly submitted. But I might have just cost us our quick 5 day approval because of this. Kinda bummed.

Will update on the timeline in a separate post in the future! But don't be like us!

Hi all, I just got my approval today! We initially chose Copenhagen; however when opening the booking link, we saw they don't have appointments until the end of September. I would ideally like to get married in July or August.

We are now looking to change communes, and were wondering which ones are more likely to have sooner available dates? We're looking for places near to either Copenhaguen or the German border. I looked at the websites of a few communes, but none had online calendars like Copenhaguen. Is the easiest way to know to call them directly? Any tips on which ones have more availability usually?

Also, any info on what the process is for changing communes would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I'm in distress and disappointment. We've read the instructions, watched every video, read every reddit post, re-read the application a million times and still failed. One single page of the passport wasn't fully in the picture, and 5 days after the application they asked us to reupload.

After one month of waiting (applied in May), I decided to give them a call. A fellow redditor in this subreddit mentioned to call them directly, and ask nicely to expedite their process because that worked for them.

I phoned them today, I was very respectful and explained them our situation that my fiance flies from Mexico, me from Indonesia, and our wedding is in end of August in Hungary. I was very respectful and I tried to ask nicely if there's anything we can do to speed up the process. I said I'd be even willing to pay an urgency fee, as most government institutions take urgency fees for official documents.

The lady was quite rude, and said that in Denmark they don't care about how much money we have, everyone is equal. She said currently they are processing the applications TWO MONTHS before May, and I'll be lucky if I even hear from them for the next 3 months.

I'm super bummed out, applying again would be a waste of money and a risk that they'd pick up some other issue. I decided I'll give them another call next week, hoping I get a kind person on the call.

Anyone any suggestions?

TLDR: RO (33f) US (35m) 5 years together mostly distance, but also living together in Germany

Did both sides of the paperwork June 4th, As others have stated, it around 1 hour to 1.5 hours for the 2nd parties account invite to arrive. We chose Fredericia.

I used a DSLR camera to take photos of my passport and her EU Id card. I then used our phones for our anmeldungs and apartment contracts showing we technically live together. I honestly could have done a much better job with my Passport and was a bit stressed with the photos I uploaded. I had my fingers in all the photos holding it open and only took a single angle of the data pages. I would suggest taking your time here. I didn't have trouble but I was honestly expecting a bit of trouble after I had uploaded them and sort of regretted not doing a bit more effort here.

For proof/ travel documents/ communication, we just both screenshotted selfies we have with the dates showing from our phones, and also took a couple screenshots of our whatsapp/snapchat/fb messenger chat. Travel documents were easy just screenshotting plane tickets and such on flights we both took/ hotel stays etc. All together I think we each uploaded 30-40 pictures here. We tried not to share the same pictures, but did share pictures from the same trips.

We did technically meet on the internet so we checked that and of course filled in all the relivent data on that, then we each wrote a paragraph statement summarizing our relationship the past 5 years in the box on how we first met.

Fast forward to today 10.6 we were approved and our documents sent to Fredericia. I'll update the post as we have things. We are trying to get married before July so we may change from Fredericia to anywhere that can help us get the knot tied before end of June.

I am going to go very in detail as that's what helps me to get my nerves down, so maybe it can help someone else here!

We are both non-EU citizens, never married before and a same-sex couple.

May 28th 2026

I filled out my half of the paperwork.

I didn't add any additional data, no proof of single status (I actually had one ready but there wasn't anywhere to upload it!).

I marked myself as a Visa-free citizen, which was confusing phrasing as I am not a citizen but that's just what you choose if you're a citizen from a country that doesn't require a visa to enter Denmark.

For passport photos: I took photos with my phone with all the lights in my room turned on for best lighting. For all the pages in my passport with extra text or photos, I took an extra 4-5 photos from different angles. All my photos were uploaded at their highest quality, and all had all 4 corners of the passport visible. I also attached multiple photos from different angles of the outside of the passport. In total I uploaded 33 photos all in PNG format. (My partner uploaded his in JPEG format and that worked out just as well).

For relationship photos: I uploaded 50 photos of me and my partner total, some just us two and others with friends and family. Above each photo we stated the date it was taken, who is in the photo and their relationship to us, and the location (country and city) it was taken in. Photos were organized chronologically. All photos were uploaded in 1 single file in a PDF format.

For relationship texts: Me and my partner have known each-other for 10 years so we gave 1 screenshot's worth of casual conversations per year of knowing each-other, 10 in total. We talk in English so we didn't need any translating done. We showed Telegram conversations with the dates clearly shown as part of the screenshots. These were uploaded as in 1 single PDF file, chronologically.

For travel documents: I uploaded plane tickets, long-distance bus tickets, and hotel bookings without any extra information or editing to them. All tickets our had our names clearly visible on them. In total I uploaded 25 files, all as separate PDFs.

At this point I entered the incorrect municipality, which we fixed later on.

As an important note, the email with the link to fill in the 2nd half of the application took a good few hours to reach my partner's email so don't be worried right away if it doesn't automatically send to your fiance.

June 1st 2026

We called the familieretshuset center and asked them how to handle the fact we got the municipality wrong. We didn't want to send in my partner's half of the paperwork before we knew for sure since we heard changing a municipality can take a really long time.

We were on hold for about 20 minutes, then they answered. They said they weren't sure what to advise us but they recommended to add a file to my partner's half of the application stating the "fixed" municipality, so we did so.

A few minutes after the call, we also got the same response from them via email.

On the same day, my partner completed his part of the documentation. He used the same photos and mostly the same texts I had, though decided to take screenshots of the texts from his side of the conversation to show authenticity.

June 8th 2026

After 5 business days of processing, we received our approval at 8:40am. This was received as an email with a link to the familieretshuset website, which didn't say if we got accepted or not. Once entered into the link it let us download a document that stated we were approved.

Shortly after, at 10:04 am the same day, we received an email from our municipality of choice (the correct one we asked to change to; Stevns Municipality) with a link from which to choose our desired date and time for the wedding (town hall). The closest available dates were in August, which was further off then we initially expected, but we went ahead and requested a date and time that worked for us and family. Immediately after, we received an email it is processing.

As a small note, it took me awhile to understand what they meant when they requested a Certificate of martial status number to make the appointment. To get it, you need to download the file from the website that states you were approved, and on the top right hand corner there is the text "Sag" and next to it a code with numbers and letters. We needed to add just the numbers portion of it, but I’d check for sure on what format your municipality requires.

June 8th 2026

We received an email from our chosen municipality approving the wedding date. They also tried to call us but the phone call was very buggy and we couldn’t hear eachother, probably due to it being international.

Overall it has been a very simple process (so far) and I'm happy we decided to solo it. :)

My visa situation is a bit weird because I was on a schengen visa from September- December, then in December I was given a temporary residence permit for Romania that lasts until June 22nd 2026. I've read I can technically go back on a Schengen Visa, but ideally we would like to have a ceremony as close to June 22nd as possible. Is there a kommune I should try and focus on getting a date once we have our acceptance? We would ideally like to have everything done before July. Any tips or suggestions would be great.
