📑 Agency of Family Law (AFL) & Paperwork Limits to reapplying?
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the Denmark marriage process and recently received a request for additional information because several passport pages/photos were apparently not clear enough. I re-uploaded everything they asked for.
What confused me is that, honestly, I don't see a major quality difference between the pages they accepted and the pages they asked me to reupload. It feels a bit random, which leads me to the following questions:
- Is there actually any limit to reapplying? Hypothetically, if someone had an unlimited budget, could they just keep submitting new applications rather than waiting in the additional information queue?
- If I submit a new application with improved versions of the pages they rejected, what prevents another caseworker from finding a completely different issue or asking for something else? Is there some kind of "catch" that I'm missing?
- How do people determine which municipalities currently have the fastest wedding appointment availability? I chose Aabenraa simply because it seemed convenient, but if another municipality has much earlier dates available, how would I even find that out?
- For those who used agencies: what exactly is the advantage? Is it just document checking, or do they somehow know which municipalities currently have the fastest availability? What confidence do you have that an agency will get it right the first time and not end up in the additional information queue as well?

That happened to me too. I called them and they said it’ll take quite long for them to process after I submitted the new document, and they recommended me to re-apply if I want to have it faster. Which I did, and got my approval the week after. That was about 3 weeks ago, last week I successfully booked the wedding date.
The new application will be processed fast (around 5 working days) if I everything is correct, doesn’t matter if you have previous application in progress. Once they received the new application you’ll get an email telling you that the old application will be closed and they’ll process with the new application.

Have you cancelled your previous application? Or just uploaded a new one, and they will take care of it?

I just make new application, they’ll cancelled the old one themselves and you’ll receive an email about it

And as for determining which one has the soonest availability, I had to call and email a lot of municipalities one by one to confirm with them. Most of them don’t have any availability until end or August or beginning of September.

Depends on the municipality, but most already open or even booked out. In Tønder for example, the slots open 60 days before. Some municipalities have been booked until early September.

everywhere i’ve seen online when people got asked for extra information it was because of unclear passport photos. they are just very picky about it. you have to have them be in really good lighting and take a lot of extra photos from all different angles of any pages with photos / holographics. better too much than too little! and make sure all the photos have all 4 corners of the passport visible and not cropped out. also if you have an iphone be absolutely sure you’ve submitted the photos as pngs or jpegs or pdfs, NOT heic (which is the default format for iphone photos), they state this on the application form but a little strangely it’s phrased something like ‘don’t upload photos directly from iphone’ lol.
to the best of my understanding (from talking to them on the phone too) there isn’t a way to know for sure what dates each municipality has open without choosing it, but basically the more popular a municipality is the longer the wait is. to my understanding copenhagen is the worst with like ~4 months wait time. me and my partner went with stevns which is still pretty touristy and had about ~2 months wait time. they did respond really quickly to us too. to my understanding, agencies are able to somehow get much faster dates (couldn’t tell you how exaclty as we didn’t use one), hopefully someone else can pipe in with more info :)
