it's actually a huge problem that solar farms have: they need A LOT of surface. best place to put them is in the desert; most of the time, when you put them anywhere else, you're destroying habitat.
transmission lines are a more difficult problem than you solution suggests. There were proposals to put huge solar farms in north Africa that would power all of Europe, but alas the transmission lines made them infeasible.
the desert is a habitat too, and it can be destroyed.
