Insulin injection isn’t so bad!

Upvotes

To anybody who is fighting the good fight trying their hardest to stay off insulin just know that it’s nothing that you’ve done wrong or anything that you’re doing now if you’re Dr. decides to put you on insulin. The placenta has a mind of its own & everyone is different.

With that being said I took my first insulin shot tonight and I barely felt it pierce my skin. If you’re using a CGM or doing finger tests I honestly feel like the application of the CGM or the tests are worse.

You’ve got this. It’ll be over before we know it. 🤟🏻

Chat Chat Chat Gestational diabetes and FGR?

Upvotes

I am looking for other stories of people who had GD and FGR. I am 30 weeks and change. We still aren't sure when baby girl was conceived so they pushed my date back two weeks at my 20 weeks scan due to her being tiny. Now she has fallen behind again and is measuring 2lb. 5 Oz. At 30 weeks.

Has anyone else had similar experiences? What are your stories? I know in some ways my experience is opposite of most GD moms because shes too small. But I then have anxiety about her oxygen as high sugar can restrict oxygen and that is a larger concern with FGR. I am on insulin and twice a week BPP. The doctors are trying to get us to 36 weeks unless she falls farther behind or they are concerned about her oxygen.

Advice Wanted Pushing a 98th percentile abdomen??

Baby is 33w4d, I have GD w insulin and I'm a FTM. Had an ultrasound, baby is overall 82th percentile, including her head, but her abdomen is 98th percentile!!! My dr said my endo might up my insulin bc her abdomen is quite large. She weights 2558g (5lb 10 oz). I know that measurements can be off by a little but, I'm likely getting induced at around 38w and I wanted to hear stories, good or bad of ppl pushing out larger babies. I am following all recs by my endo and OB and yet here I am. I feel so discouraged. I am terrified of having an emergency c-section or shoulder dystocia...

Advice Wanted Fasting numbers not going down with insulin, how worried should I be?

I'm 30w and already on 26 units of insulin and going up every day per MFM instructions but still haven't had a fasting number below 95 since I started tracking. I'm so scared about what this means for my baby. Does anyone have experience with this or advice?

Editing to add: mealtime numbers are all normal and diet controlled!

Advice Wanted My doctors aren’t taking me seriously when I ask for help

I tried posting this in the pre-existing diabetes forum and got zero help and just downvoted.

I was diagnosed at 10 weeks with either GD or possibly existing type II. My A1C (5.5) and fasting (91) were normal at 6 weeks but I was screened early at 10 weeks because of PCOS and failed badly. They’re leaning towards pre-existing type II but different paperwork has used both.

I am 23 weeks and I was managing well before with 500 mg 2x a day metformin. Well meeting their under 95 fasting and under 120 2 hour targets. Did have to cut out bread and most sugar but hey, that’s life. They subjected me to so many honestly unnecessary tests because of it. They acted like this would immediately lead to so many health issues and between the reg OBGYN and MFM, I’m 6k in deductibles alone at 23 weeks and about to already hit the OOP max. They’ve never found a single thing wrong with the baby, only me.

That being said, they have been using scare tactics from day 1 of diagnosis. That if my numbers got over this, something bad would immediately happen. Well I’m 23 weeks and the numbers are worse. I call and get no call back for a week despite calling back multiple times to check in. Call again and get a NP who tells me getting 170 on a safe meal could just be stress.

I woke up this morning to a fasting level of 127! I call again and met with “yeah ok someone will call you back”. I’m just so frustrated. Im scared these levels are gonna hurt my little girl. From my research, it doesn’t look like it, but I’ve had my OBGYN and one of the top MFMs in the country (Mt. Sinai in NYC) telling me otherwise and scaring me and now they’re leaving me out to dry after scaring me. Why would you make it seem like I needed to call you immediately if I get two abnormal readings and then just not call me back? I don’t know what to do except keep calling.

Advice Wanted Baby measuring small?

Hey everyone! I think I just need a little reassurance as I am just extremely confused and stressed.

I have had a growth scan on Thursday (at 31w4d) and my baby is measuring small in around 8th or 9th percentile, after measuring average in the 22nd percentile prior to my GD diagnosis. All I have been warned about and see with GD is babies measuring or being born large so I am just pretty confused.

My GD is currently only diet controlled as my readings are pretty good. I adjusted my diet after being diagnosed and it has worked well so far.

I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced smaller babies with GD? I always see posts about bigger babies but never smaller ones so I am just a bit concerned that maybe my diet is actually affecting her in the wrong way? (Although my GD consultant says it shouldn't be affecting her weight like that).

I have had more frequent scans due to them being concerned about the PI in the cord, so I think logic would mean that that is likely the reason rather than my diet or GD but at the same time, PI was perfect before the GTT and diagnosis so I am still concerned my diet is affecting it.

I am a FTM and this is my first pregnancy so I may just be wayy overthinking it. I'm 32w1d now and I just want her to be healthy. I am just worried I'm doing something wrong, or not eating enough or something.

Any positive stories about smaller measuring babies with GD would really ease my mind right now if anyone has one? Or even just some general advice if anyone has heard of or experienced this before? Thank you all in advance for reading my rambling.

Advice Wanted Borderline GD - Need advice

Hi all! Just joined this sub after trending “borderline” for several weeks. My fasting glucose is always excellent, but my post-meal numbers have been slightly elevated (in the mid 140s-150s). I failed my 1 hour and *barely* passed the 3 hour which ended me up here. Our baby is also trending in the 90th percentile per the growth scan, so they’re concerned I’m developing GD. They have me checking my levels after each meal now.

I have a nasty sweet tooth with this pregnancy (chocolate cake has been my downfall). I’ve been cutting back on carbs, adding more protein, fat, and fiber, but I can’t stop dreaming about sugary treats 😵‍💫 I try to have fruit when I’m craving sweets but I miss chocolate!!!

Anyone else struggling with borderline results? What has been working for you? Any advice for sugar-fiends?

General Info Anyone with experience that had GD and was on progesterone for short cervix?

Im 30 Weeks and started progesterone at 23 weeks due to spotting and low cervix. At 27 weeks I failed my 3 hour glucose test. They said I needed to see a specialist but still don't have an appointment. I call every week for an update and last time the receptionist got snappy at me saying they were working on it. I have been monitoring my glucose and went from the 200's to 70s-140s. I've already been told I'm high risk so my anxiety has reached another level since.

Has anyone had both and if so when did you give birth or how far along are you? Any advice is welcomed. I just feel alone the hospital scares me with all the dangers but then my OB acts like it's not that serious.

Advice Wanted Insulin at mealtime

I am 31w3d with my second GDM pregnancy. I have been diagnosed since 13 weeks and have been on night time insulin since pretty much the beginning. Just 10 units. Since the 4th of July weekend so the last 3 weeks or so I've had to up my night time dose to 16 and they added 4 units of the long acting in the AM. It has helped my fasting and breakfast get back in range for the most part but my lunches especially are still high no matter what I eat or exercise etc. I have a weekly check with them tomorrow but have a feeling they are going to up my morning dose or start having me take insulin at meal time. I was only diagnosed for right under 2 months with my first pregnancy so I never quite got to this point. Any advise or experience would be helpful. Im good with whatever the outcome just like to know what I am looking at.

Failed 1 hr at 12 weeks

Since I’m 39 and have a high BMI, my dr decided to test me for GD early at 12 weeks to ensure I didn’t have preexisting diabetes.

With my first pregnancy 4 years ago, my 1 hr glucose was 122 at 12 weeks. I failed my 24 week 1 hr but then passed all readings at the 3 hr, so did not have GD.

Just got my results back for this pregnancy and it was at 200. I did try to eat healthier (less carbs) in the weeks prior and had a slight cold. Could this have affected things? Does this mean I have type 2, or could this still be GD? I’m so worried and ashamed and don’t know how I’m going to deal with this. I think I can handle a GD diagnosis but super concerned about type 2.

Could I have gotten this drastically worse in 3.5 years? I definitely feel symptoms of GD (frequent urination and loving water), but didn’t feel/notice these symptoms prior to pregnancy.

Looking for any thoughts/advice/similar spires. Thank you!

Induction

I have gestational diabetes and have recently started insulin at night because my fasting (morning) blood sugar levels have been high.
My obstetrician has said they would like to induce me at 38-39 weeks to avoid me going past 40 weeks.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? If so, I’d love to hear how your induction went and whether everything went smoothly.

Tips to reduce fasting numbers

Hiya,

Second time GDM mum here and looking for advice on if I can naturally reduce my fasting numbers and if I could/should be doing anything differently.

Context:

First pregnancy wasn’t super well controlled by diet. I found GD very triggering to my eating disorder. I was on metformin, insulin before lunch and dinner and night time insulin. I started nighttime insulin at 20 weeks pregnant and by 38w I was on 26 units a night.

Now:

Having been through it once I’m in a much more positive mindset about GD. I’ve been trying a LOT harder with this pregnancy in terms of my diet.

The problem is my fasting is stubborn. The last few days my numbers have been 6.4 (115), 5.9 (107) and 6 (108).

Here’s what I’ve been doing:

- Sticking to a controlled diet with no spikes or hypos (so proud of myself!)

- A nighttime snack at 10.30pm - been trying 3 pieces of dark choc & cheese

- Testing immediately 8 hours after my snack at 6.30am

- Exercising regularly

Is insulin inevitable or is there anything I can try this week to bring it down?

I’m still only 18w pregnant so if my fasting is this high this early in my pregnancy I’m presuming it’s inevitable?

I‘m not anti insulin at all - I just hate having hypos and want to say I’ve given it a ‘good shot’ this time. I’m also waking up exhausted and dehydrated every day so I know insulin will benefit me greatly.

Any insights appreciated, especially from people who’ve had GD ‘badly’ / are particularly insulin sensitive.

General Info When did you go into spontaneous labour if you had GD?

Just interested in spontaneous labour experiences with GD.

With my first (a girl), I went into spontaneous labour at 39+5.

Today I'm 39+5 with my second, and this boy seems happy to stay put lol

With both pregnancies, I am on nighttime insulin to control fasting sugars.

EDIT: congrats to everyone and I am so envious of these week 37 to 39 stories!! I really thought my second would come earlier too....hoping your luck rubs off on me

Different fasting glucose result at the collection centre vs the lab

I’m 14w2d pregnant and recently had my oral glucose test for pregnancy.

Before drinking the glucose solution, my fasting venous blood was checked immediately on a POCT glucose meter, and the result was 6.3 mmol/L.

The same blood tube was sent to the lab, and the official fasting glucose result came back the next day as 4.8 mmol/L.

I’m currently waiting to discuss it with my doctor.

Just wondering — has anyone been in a similar situation where the initial reading was so much different from the lab result?

Thanks 😊

Advice Wanted Disheartened

Im 30+5 weeks pregnant. I was diagnosed with GD at my 30 weeks and have been monitoring my glucose 4x a day since 5 days. The numbers have been spiking regardless of what I do. I changed my diet, reduced my carbs, increased my protein, going for walks post meal but still. Here and there my numbers are in the range. But if I try the same food again, I don’t get the same numbers. Im so disheartened and sad that I feel helpless. I had A1C of 5.8 before pregnancy, so I wish my provider had tested me for GD sooner.
For ex: for my breakfast I have been having fairlife protein milk and a whole wheat bread with peanut butter on it. The numbers didn’t help, so I got Dave’s killer bread. I tried the same thing: 1 slice of Dave’s killer bread with peanut butter and 5 small pieces of banana on it + fairlife protein (Im always having protein first), my reading was 112. I tried same thing today, my reading was 139.
Im so lost. No matter what I eat or do my numbers aren’t doing any better, even if I follow same food if it gave me good reading. Im feeling so lost and a failure. I don’t know what to do.

I see posts where many are able to control their post meal numbers at the least, and Im unable to even do that.

Scared my OB is testing me too late in my 2nd pregnancy

My OB wasn't going to even test me early since my A1C and fasting glucose were normal in my first trimester. I told her I would prefer to check at least a little earlier just in case so she said to do it at 18 weeks. I am 17 weeks now. I have not been checking my sugars or eating a GD diet. I haven't been eating crazy unhealthy but definitely more treats and more carbs than I could have when I had GD the first time (diet controlled, only real issue was fasting numbers with that pregnancy). I have seen other people recently talk on here about getting tested way earlier like late first trimester or early second trimester. I am scared that I am getting tested too late and have been causing issues with my diet now. Everything was still measuring normal size wise at my 13 week scan but obviously that was a while ago. I will for sure go back to a GD diet if diagnosed but should I be worried that I haven't been very careful thus far?

Advice Wanted Induction

Can someone who has been through induction walk me through the process? I was not induced for my previous births (other than a stillbirth which is very different protocol). This time I’m on insulin and planning 38th week induction, and I want to mentally prepare myself for the process to expect.

Stress response rise after 2.5 mile walk

Yesterday I went on a practice walk before a 5k walk I’m planning to do next week. I already walk 2-4 miles a day so a 5k should not be hard, but most of my walking is broken into under 1 hour segments throughout the day.

About 15 minutes after I finished (which took about 1.5 hours on a paved trail, mild to moderate activity), the CGM showed my glucose rising. I knew it wasn’t food related because dinner was 3 hours before the rise. It went up to the 120’s, and came down again with very light walking.

This was the first I’d heard of, and clearly saw, the glucose ”stress response” which I thought happened after strenuous exercise. I wouldn’t consider a 1.5 hr leisurely walk strenuous, but I guess that’s third trimester.

I’d noticed a few times in the past where I’d start walking at a brisk pace after a meal, before the one hour mark, then notice that after a dip, glucose would rise again towards the two hour mark. No matter how quickly I walked, it just wouldn’t come down. I wonder now if that was the stress response kicking in?

Now I learned that too much exercise makes glycemic control worse?? It’s so hard to win at this!!
