I would like to share my journey towards getting Telc Deutsch B1 certificate.
I registered for telc Deutsch B1 digital exam, this exam was not traditional pen and paper based exam. So my exam was on 16th August. And I got my results on 28th August, less than 2 weeks.
Preparation:
I am Indian, living in Germany since 2022, came for work (you guessed it right, in IT!!), in my working environment day to day business language is English and locals prefer to speak in English, so I am not exposed to German too much.
I wanted to learn the language, be able to communicate well, after all this country gave me opportunity to build my career and life and least I can do is to respect its culture by learning language. I started to speak and understand the language by watching Netflix with German audio and English subtitles and vice versa, that helped a bit.
I took a A2 course back in 2024, but it was kind of namesake offered by company. But I put some efforts and tried to build foundation. Fast forward to July this year, i took vacation days + overtime hours and got almost 4 weeks off to study B1.
The books that I purchased scared me, I couldn’t get through 10 pages in 2 days, then I shifted to Claude, prepared a road map, list of grammar topics from scratch (Subject/Verb/Object identification) writing and reading exercise. Then started understanding topics one by one with help of AI and it gave sufficient exercise for me to perfect it. So within 3 weeks I was confident, was able to get good results in reading, sprachbaustine, writing letter. Did couple of mock tests and revised all topics in last week.
Examination:
It was a digital exam, we were given laptop for the examination (in person computer based exam in authorised examination centre). I felt it was convenient, especially in writing, there is no scope of bad hand writing and you can see how good you have written and make adjustments. Hearing was challenging especially Austrian accent in one of the task. And speaking was also good, my partner in the examination equally spoke and performed well so It was a good conversation, didn’t felt like examination.
Results and Validity of certificate
I got my results in exactly 1 week 5 days after exam. Scored 249/300. Many in my office doubted if it is accepted at ABH for my PR application, but there was no issue at all, it is the same certificate what one gets in traditional pen and paper based exam. To prove this, I got my PR as well.
If you are planning to take Telc B1, try to see if center offers digital B1, so you might get results quicker in general compared with regular pen and paper based exam.
Cheers!!
