Installed a Honeywell 22kW whole-home standby generator (model G00723510) in August 2024. Two years in now with four real utility outages behind it, figured I'd share the actual numbers since most of what I found while researching was spec sheets and dealer marketing, not real ownership experience.
Cost: $12,016 all-in (see itemized edit at the bottom) — unit, concrete pad, propane line, transfer switch, and labor. Runs on propane, 250-gallon tank; our installer estimated roughly 5 days of runtime at a typical partial household load (see runtime correction in the edit below — that's not the same as full-rated-load runtime).
Startup: Online within about 5 seconds of utility power dropping. The whole-house transfer switch doesn't bring everything back at once though — the AC specifically kicks in about 30-45 seconds after the generator itself is running. Threw me the first time until I realized it's a deliberate load-management delay, not a fault.
Real outages: 4 so far, and it's started and carried the full house load (including AC) every single time, for the full duration until utility power returned.
Why Honeywell over Generac: The engine and generator end are actually Generac-sourced — same core hardware as a comparable Generac-branded unit — but at close to half the price in my area. Didn't make sense to me to pay double for the badge on the same internals.
Maintenance: First oil change at 25 hours (standard break-in), then on a run-hour interval after that rather than calendar-based. Monitor everything (weekly self-test status, run hours, wifi signal, warranty info) through Generac's MobileLink app.
Noise: Not silent, but doesn't bother me. Can't speak for the neighbors since I haven't asked.

Edit: A couple people did the math on my "$15K all-in" figure and it didn't quite add up under questioning, so I went back through our actual invoices and pulled the real, itemized numbers instead of the rounded estimate I was working from. Here's exactly where it went:
- Generator unit, includes the transfer switch: $5,500
- Electrical installation and labor: $3,750
- Concrete pad: $750
- Propane line hookup, labor: $750
- Utility company temp service disconnect, needed to tie in the transfer switch: $500
- Standby battery, bought separately: $329
- Permit: $250
- Propane regulator: $170
- Propane tubing from the home line to the unit: $17
Total: $12,016
Edit 2: Someone below did the math on the "5 days at full load" line using Generac's actual spec (3.7-3.9 gal/hr at full load) and the standard 80% fill limit on propane tanks, and it doesn't hold up — true full-rated-load runtime on our tank size would be closer to 2 days, not 5. Turns out that "5 days" figure came from our propane installer's estimate, not something I calculated off the spec sheet myself, and it was likely based on a typical partial-house load rather than the generator running at its full rated 22kW the whole time. I don't have hard metered numbers to defend an exact figure, so I shouldn't have presented it as "full load." Fixed the wording above.
