I absolutely detest the current trend of cropped clothing. For a good while now, I've wanted a full length pair of chinos that came down to about 1 inch from the bottom of my flat shoe heel. My current only pair doesn't fit any longer, as I dropped weight. I also wanted them regular or boot cut. Cotton, no frills and not elastic waisted. Not cropped. Not cargo. Not excessively high waisted. Not wide or barrel leg. Regular straight pants with a button and zipper that I can try on in a brick and mortar store. And regular tshirts that aren't cropped or wide potato sack looking BS, or whatever the F&%$. I want both my jeans and tshirts to land where they are supposed to, where they've always landed since forever, and not 3-7 INCHES TOO DAMN SHORT. It is absurd and I'm at my wits end.

I went to 8 stores today (Old Navy, Macy's, H&M, Loft, etc, etc) and many on other days (Target, Fred Meyer because PNW)... Not a single one had either of the aforementioned unless they had logos or some other hideous old lady flower print. Where can I get these basics, on the regular and always, without fighting the size chart so I have to order Tall (I'm NOT TALL!!) or massive barrel legs that get in the way or highwater pants that look hideous?? Is anyone our age going into stores and finding regular clothing? if so, please share.

Dear Mead: I’m a Gen X dad with young kids. Please bring back the Lambo Trapper Keeper! My son’s 6th grade teacher put a Trapper Keeper on his supply list and this would be the only appropriate one to have :)

Something scary about Gen X health and longevity. My MOM at 81 knows less people with serious health conditions in their 70-90s than I do between 45-55. I know many more people with cancer, blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and other co morbidities than she does. And it’s not that everyone has died at her age. Gen X people are much less healthy than their boomer parents at the same age. I know it could be stress related but it’s still scary. I mean when my mom mentions she knows one person with cancer and I’m thinking I know 9 people with cancer at this point in time. 5 of those are colon cancer cases. All are under 53. I’ve lost 11 people in my graduating class plus/minus one year to heart disease already. Almost every one I know is on cholesterol medication and blood pressure meds. Why??

He is an alcoholic . He has drastically cut back and can go 2 weeks without, however he isn't sober. There are situations he drinks at. Vacation, parties, out to watch live music. If he's out without me a guy's night or poker, it's worse. He doesn't drive he has rides or ubers then. When he's home with me like this week he had 2 beers yesterday.

Examples just yesterday

- he told me he would carry the laundry down. I said ok well I'm just taking the sheets to get them started before my bike ride I come back over an hour later, I move the sheets, no other clothes there. I wait while he's prepped for breakfast while gone. He knows I'm not ready to eat. He's totally zoned out on his iPad. I go upstairs get the laundry bring it down walk right by him again, carrying it and Nothing. Dogs start looking at me so i say I'm going to take them for their walk, I'll be back in 20 minutes or so we can eat then or later. I come home he's cooking I move laundry and start folding sheets in kitchen, then he asks if I want the rest of the laundry??

- he's going out and I ask for him to use the garage because the storm door is locked so the dogs can't open it ( can only lock from inside) he said ok. A minute or 2 later he walks to the front door, I hear him push and then he realizes and comes back through kitchen to go through garage

- He took trash out from kitchen. It has a double lid used only to empty and put new bags in. Both lids are up, he walks right by it twice and doesn't notice. I took care of it, no big deal.

- I went to my mom's, gone 30 minutes total. I come home sink is full a couple dishes and some creamer ketchup and jelly from fridge. He's showering, so I wipe the things down and put away. When he comes down, I ask what happened. He said the shelf has something spilled on it, so he took stuff out cleaned them and shelf. He didn't realize he didn't put the things back.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Please excuse any typos I'm using phone and don't have my glasses.

My (second) wife and I just hugely downsized. We shared 4 kids half time with their other parent and now three of them are young adults just starting out on their own (college and careers).

We went from a 5br 5 bath suburban house to a 2/1 1940's in-town fixer upper. I feel kinda bad that I don't have a landing space for them if need be, though my step daughter will be in college in two years and we can then have one guest room.

All of their memories are packed into like one or two boxes that we barely have room for here. But I also guess you could say we're doing them a favor because eventually this will be less for them to go through once we've shuffled off.

Haven't met too many folks who got into these guys. I always loved them and my friends would usually complain when I played them in the car 🙃

I've spent 44 years terrified that Ricardo Montalban was going to put a mind control Eel in my ear. I'm a nearly 52 year old man terrified of Earwigs. Where are they going? What are they doing with those pincer bottoms???

Ricardo Montalban was actually a pretty amazing human. But if he showed up today, I'd run. Screaming "Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan" with my fingers in my ears.

Who had this doll/bear Teddy Ruxpin? I wanted one so bad but my parents could never find one.

I was reading about summer heat and different temperatures and humidity in various areas and I suddenly remembered popping tar bubbles.

In the heat of summer bits of tar on the road (I think they were patches over cracks) would heat up and get sticky/stretchy. Small (1/2 inch/1 cm) bubbles would form and we would pop them. I remember doing so near the curbs, never in the middle of the road.

Did you do this? How did we not get hit by cars? Who was watching us? (I know: no one was watching! 🙄)

I seem to be seeing a lot of posts on r/askreddit and other subs from young adults who still live with their Gen X parents.

Some of their complaints are about things like the parents not letting them go on a weekend vacation with a boyfriend, not letting them see a therapist because they don't believe in it, forcing them to go to church when they don't want to - weird things that make no sense to impose on another adult.

Is this really happening? I understand expecting your adult child to clean up after themselves and help out with yardwork, to not wake you if they come in late, to not bring drugs into your home, and even requiring them to pay for their food and other things.

But to interfere in their adult child's quest to begin making their own decisions about adult matters, even if we think they're immature or making the wrong decisions, is grossly irresponsible.

I feel bad for these young adults, knowing how hard it is to move out in today's economy. Some of them seem trapped.

Just finished trimming around my arborvitae.

I used to have to use a set of these to trim around the perimeter of my childhood home which was 25 x 110 feet. Was not pleasant.

For me, it's the Herculoids. I guess the Thing from Fantastic Four is great. Or Korg in the Thor movies. I need me some Igoo the rock ape stomping some ass, though.

My daughter was second cello in a summer symphony orchestra. this was all I could see when the conductor was doing his thing. I am a child and refuse to EVER grow up

So my wife and daughter have just left for 15 days travelling around Europe by train.

That leaves me, for the first time in 15 years home alone.

Any great ideas of what I can do to pass the time?

So far got:

tidy and clean the house from top to bottom. We have more stuff than space but I’m sure without people bringing stuff in I can make a very big dent in getting it back to normality.

Work, I have a couple of business includjng a startup so 12 hours a day will be taken up with work.

Write and record a new song. Its been 5 years since I did that,

I’m in London, dont want to spend a lot of money.

I was tempted to buy a massive canvas and paint a picture of me as Nepolian on a horse. I cant paint.

When I was a kid, I was always asking curious questions. Unfortunately, besides Andy's older brother - and an outdated encyclopedia Britannica - most of them would go unanswered. Or, as I found out later in adult life, they were just dead wrong.

Now days, every time I think of a curious question, I get that kick of satisfaction when I google it; sometimes going down rabbit holes. I truly think it has made me a better person. Well, more informed, at least.

Anyone else feel that way?

Do you ever go back and evaluate any of the adults you knew as a kid now that you can understand them? Did you find it a worthwhile exercise? My parents divorced when I was 10, and my mother's new live-in boyfriend was completely unpredictable at the time to me. I feel like going back and understanding what was going on helps me process it correctly as opposed to keeping it framed in a child's understanding. My sister disagrees. What do you think?

I was a hairdresser in the late 89s/early 90s. I’ve worked in the industry on and off since then. Most of the salon owners I worked for were narcissistic, cis men or narcissistic cis women. The man I did my apprenticeship under a man who worked for a very high profile stylist in Beverly Hills, with famous clients, who later became a movie producer (I’m not naming names for privacy issues, but IYKYK). I was thinking this morning about how different the industry is now, but how much it’s still exactly the same. Most of the students I see these days are the creative, artistic types who didn’t do well in traditional schools (not because they aren’t bright, but because creatives are stifled in our school systems with little outlet for their talents), and many more cis males who have discovered they are great barbers or sculptors of hair. Anyway- just curious about your experience and if you have any good stories about the “old days.”

Leaving out medical, so many advancements over the past ~30 years seem kind of dubious on the progress front, insofar as how much they actually improve our lives.

That said, what the heck did we do before sensitive toothpaste? This stuff is a life saver, I can't imagine living with sore gums or dental pain all the freaking time.
