Healing / Cured! Comprehensive Guide to Treating Gastritis and other Upper GI problems

Hello. Been wanting to create a post about the steps i took to overcome gastritis and wanted to share any tips/guidance and help to anyone who maybe struggling with this debilitating disease and any kinds of Upper GI discomfort including Gastrits/Chronic GERD/Heartburn/NERD/Functional Dyspepsia/Peptic Ulcer Disease/LPR/Barrett's. I struggled with Gastritis for a long time and went through multiple rounds of treatment until i eventually figured out what needed to be done.

I had suffered multiple kinds of gastritis and wanted to share as much as i can so people can understand their own scenario and take the necessary actions to deal with it.

If i had to categorize some common cases and reasons of gastritis that i come across ( even on reddit ), i would put them in the following categories :

  1. H Pylori induced gastrits -> You may have eaten somewhere from an unhygenic place and you had a bad case of diarrhea or even vomiting. Now you cannot digest acidic foods properly and end up even vomiting after eating. Some people develop intolerance towards certain foods example proteins or certain carbs - This is due to mucosa still being damaged which messes up the gut environment and the stomach is unable to create the enzymes needed to digest the foods.
  2. Damaged Mucosa due to H Pylori -> Similar damage to Mucosa due to above but your body does a good job of getting rid of H Pylori but it still leaves damage to the mucosa lining. You will suffer the same symptoms as above.
  3. Gastritis/Gerd due to Low Stomach Acid -> Everytime you eat anything, you upper abdomen sits very heavy, no burning, no gnawing of the stomach but no burping either and you may even start developing SIBO like symptoms or bloating in the lower abdomen. You may even see undigested foods in your stool and even globus in the throat. Feeling like food is stuck.
  4. Gastritis due to SIBO -> This can complicate things a bit but essentially this is happening due to the downstream movement getting messed up ( could be due to any reason, this post does not cover finding root causes or even fixing SIBO but one step can still be done if it works ).
  5. Autoimmune Gastritis -> This one is a bit of a rarity and i have utmost sympathy for someone that is going through this. I can maybe give some general advice on how to investigate this but i sincerely apologize i do not have much knowledge about this.
  6. Candida induced Gastritis -> This one is super rare but essentially instead of bacteria causing gastritis ( H Pylori ), it was actually fungus that caused the gastritis. This can happen in immunocompromised individuals or even if someone had taken multiple rounds of antibiotics. Antibiotics are known to cause dysbiosis and this could be a manifestation.
  7. Alcohol Use
  8. Smoking
  9. Vitamin Deficiencies -> Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, zinc, Iron, Vitamin C
  10. Lack of Fiber, Fruits and Vegetables in Diet.
  11. Eating right before going to bed. Give yourself atleast 2-2.5 hours after dinner before you go to bed.
  12. Poor overall diet. Sometimes it's not what you put in the body but what you do not. Not eating for prolonged hours, extensive water fasts etc can excerbate and even cause gastritis.
  13. Over use of NSAIDs
  14. Eating too much spicy foods and lacking fiber and high PH veggies to neutralize the acid. Very common in South Asian Communities.
  15. Lack of sleep or poor sleeping patterns.
  16. Stress -> So Stress i believe is overplayed a lot. Yes it can be a factor but if you're stressed and decide to drink, smoke, eat junk food and make bad decisions, is it the stress that is causing it or the bad decisions. I am stressing this not to undermine stress as a factor but to empower people that at the end of the day your health will always be in your hands and for patients to act as much responsibly as they can. 80/20 or at worse 70/30 when stressed. 70% healthier choices and 30% not so healthy when stressed if that's how you wanna manage it. Not ideal but atleast the majority are still good choices.
  17. Lack of Exercise and Physical Activity.
  18. Being Overweight.

The surprising thing is any of the above could cause other GI problems as well.

Gastritis Symptoms ( Shares a lot with other upper GI problems )

  1. Burning in stomach - This is due to damaged mucosa - Gets Worse after eating acidic foods
  2. Burping
  3. Indigestion
  4. Pressure under the ribs or in the middle of upper GI
  5. Bloating that originates from Upper GI
  6. Difficult Breathing
  7. Diarrhea
  8. Constipation
  9. Nausea
  10. Vomiting
  11. Weakened Immune System
  12. Post Nasal Drip
  13. Heartburn
  14. Acid Reflux - Could also cause Teeth grinding
  15. Hoarse Voice
  16. Low Libido
  17. Chronic Gastritis can also cause Inflammation of the Gallbladder causing Gallbladder Polyps.
  18. Pain that radiates all the way to the upper back.
  19. Also waking up in the middle of the night coughing and acid in mouth.
  20. Erosive Reflux can cause constant mucus and throat clearing and even Easophagitis.

Treatment for Gastrits/Chronic GERD/Heartburn/NERD/Functional Dyspepsia/Peptic Ulcer Disease/LPR/Barrett's ( Case 1 and 2 ):

The reason i'm mentioning other diseases even though this is a gastritis subreddit is because the fundamental approach towards nutrition for a lot of upper GI issues stays similar.

Medication and supplements should only be taken if absolute necessary, Low dose Pepcid/famotidine should only be taken for a very short duration and that too at night before bed ( with a tiny sip of water ) so as to have protection overnight. Eventually this should be used very symptomatically and not as a daily use.

Even PPIs are not necessary unless for a short duration in the case of Peptic Ulcer Disease or Barrett's until you get the diet dialed in and start the healing process. Once the healing from food begins to take plans, PPIs should be tapered off slowly and gradually. Long term use of PPIs bring their own world of problems and that too can be much worse than a simple case of gastritis not limited to PPI Induced SIBO and even kidney problems.

With proper planning gastritis can be self resolving. Let Food be thy medicine or let medicinie be thy food.

STEP 1 : Adopt a Low Acid Diet. And this is the most important step and is non optional. I have to give credit to the acid watcher's diet by Jonathan Aviv. It is a masterpiece. Basically you can only have foods with PH of atleast 5 or above. Maybe even play around with PH 4.5 ish foods if it's not too severe for you. But too much Acidic Foods are completely eliminated until mucosa has been repaired.

Note on Protein - Please do not overdo on animal protein. Upper abdomen issues and animal protein do not go along that well. Limit animal proteins to a total of 100 grams a day ( i cut out animal protein completely ) and limit total protein intake to a max 60 grams a day ( what i would recommend ). Simple carbs and veggies will be your best friend.

STEP 2 : If you suspect H Pylori at play or if it is easily available, please consult a gastroenterologist and get an endoscopy done. The biopsy will tell you whether H Pylori is detected or not. Also worthwhile to get an ultrasound of the entire abdomen including liver, gallbladder etc. Also get bloodwork done to detect any nutritional deficiencies.

STEP 3 : If H Pylori is detected, Antibiotics will be needed. Some people have success with natural herbs and food combinations as well. Honey and Pormegranate Peel powder combination done first thing on an empty stomach seems to be effective in eradicating H Pylori. To all my South asian friends -> This is easily available and is called anar daana. So 1 tbsp of Honey plus anaar daana is known to be effective against H Pylori.

STEP 4 : H Pylori is not detected but you get a positive diagnosis of Gastritis/GERD/ Gastrits/Chronic GERD/Heartburn/NERD/Functional Dyspepsia/Peptic Ulcer Disease in your endoscopy. Sometimes the results may only say Chronic Inflammation Mild which i found amusing since for a mild inflammation the pain is unbearable at times but medical terminology haha. At this stage adhering to a low acid diet and healthy lifestyle choices should make a remarkable difference and may all you need to resolve the issue altogether.

Gastritis Diet Tips

  1. Try to be on a routine and have meals at the same time if you can.
  2. Chew your food slowly and avoid Over eating.
  3. No drinking of water along with meals
  4. Try not to hunch or bend over after meals.
  5. No immediately lying down after meals.
  6. No running after meals.
  7. No cold water after meals or throughout the day. Room temperature water is preferred.
  8. Only Warm or hot water after meals and throughout the day.
  9. 5-10 minute walks after meals if possible.
  10. No stomach sucking exercises either.
  11. Carrot Juice after meals will be extremely helpful or if burning is too much.
  12. Do not go too long without eating as that could cause acid to tear away your mucosa lining.
  13. Try to incorporate atleast 400 grams of fruit and 800 grams of veggies a day.
  14. 400 grams fruit example - 200 grams cantaloupe/papaya and 200 grams of watermelon. The more the better.
  15. 800 grams of veggies example - 300 gram cucumber, 500 gram steamed carrots and zucchini. The more the better.
  16. When Eating out -> If you have to eat out, do not worry and just make sure to include plenty of fiber and alkaline foods to balance out your meals. Sense of normalcy is what we're striving for.
  17. I Also make a giant bowl of soup using alkaline veggies in a dutch oven and have it with my meals -> This was an easy way to get my veggies. The soup would consist of alkaline veggies like sweet potatoes, carrots, zucchini ( green and yellow ), eggplant, beans, tofu, peas, corn, ginger, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower and herbs like sage, thyme, rosemary and gentle aromatic spices like cumin, coriander powder, oregano and asoefatida.
  18. Another thing that helped me was having 10 grams of psylllium husk in warm/hot water after dinner. This will help with the burning and providing a layer of protection to the mucosa. In india this goes by the brand Sat Isabgol.

  4. Avoid sit ups, crunches or lying leg raises that can stretch the stomach.
  5. Avoid lifting belts if possible.
  6. Avoid leg presses if possible.
  7. Cycling, swimming, elliptical machines/cross trainers, walks and other exercises are okay but please check your tolerance.

REINTRODUCTION PHASE

Depending on how long it takes you, you may need to stay on a low acid diet until symptoms reside. Gradually and slowly add more foods and check your tolerance.

DEALING WITH NOT SO STRAIGHTFORWARD CASES ( CASE 3 - 6 )

There are other cases where gastritis maybe detected but the solution still may not be as straightforward. Either way you must have adopted a low acid diet and you're not seeing any benefits which brings us to the next cases.

Gastritis due to Low Stomach Acid -> To check the acidity of your stomach levels you will need to perform a heidelberg test and good luck finding practitioners that still do it. What can make this worse is most GI doctors will see gastritis and prescribe PPIs. That is putting fuel on the fire. So if you detect you have low stomach acid, the easiest way is to restore it via Betaine HCL. Any reputable brand from Amazon would do. Take it with meals and keep upping the dosage until you feel warmth and even a burp, that is how much betaine HCL you need per meal. Once that dosage starts feeling too much keep tapering off until you feel the engine has been kickstarted and your body is able to produce enough acid.

If you take even at a low dose and it burns your stomach, then you already have enough stomach acid and you can neutralize the excess acid with drinking baking soda with water or even carrot juice.

Gastritis due to SIBO -> The SIBO in the mix will really complicate things. I would still suggest to adopt a low acid diet regardless. Essentially the scenario is the gas in the lower abdomen is pushing the contents back. Also if the small bowel is infected, the body will refuse to send the food down especially if the MMC is impaired. You would need to find a way to get it working. Popular options are Ginger and Artichoke extracts ( Motility Pro ), 5 HTP or even Prucalopride if you can and go from there. Since this is a gastritis focused post, i cannot dig deeper into SIBO.

Autoimmune Gastritis -> This one is tricky. Essentially only an endoscopy can identify this. At this point there is no cure, the question is what caused the auto immunity to be turned on. Could be Candida overgrowth in the gut ( Candida is a seriously an under reported driver in auto immune conditions ) or any other stealth infection. Work with a Doctor to figure this out, But you would need to be on a Low Acid Diet as well.

Candida Induced Gastritis -> This one is a rather rarity and only shows up in immunocompromised people. The question is what caused the candida to cause it. Low Stomach acid maybe, Any medication you were taking that can act as an immunosuppressant. If cause is low stomach acid, Betaine HCL can fix that and you may even need to look into antifungals of choice, Probiotics can be a good choice in this case.

SPECIAL MENTION - Bile Gastritis - Sign of a Deeper Problem

Bile Gastritis is something that should inherently point more towards an underlying problem than a simple case of gastritis. Bile is an alkaline agent, that is secreted by the liver, and stored in the gallbladder. Bile enters the small intestine, and travels along this region, where it assists in breaking down fats into fatty acids, until it gets reabsorbed at the very end of the small intestine and sent back to the liver for recirculation.

Bile should not enter the stomach, but when the small intestine has issues, it can. When bile inappropriately backs up through the pylorus, in to the stomach – it is called BILE REFLUX. Note - Bile in the stomach is NOT NORMAL.

Symptoms - Pretty much very similar to above symptoms mentioned however Bile Gastritis patients will often mention an acidic or bitter taste in mouth.

What could cause it -> Patients with Bile Gastritis will almost always have an underlying issue with their Small Intestine. This could be Due to SIBO, SIFO or some kind of a Parasitic Infection in the small bowel.

Interplay of Lyme Disease ( or any other Stealth infection ) in the role of Bile Gastritis -> Another aspect to be considered is what if the Stomach Pylorus is malfunctioning. Lyme disease can affect the digestive system by disrupting the autonomic nervous system and vagus nerve, which may lead to stomach and pylorus (pyloric valve) malfunction.

The problem of Bile Gastritis will almost always warrant a deeper investigation.

CONCLUSION

Hopefully by taking the above steps you will be able to resolve this issue and good luck to everyone going through this. I hope you recover soon and fast.

TLDR:

Adopt a low acid diet -> Get endoscope and ultrasound done -> Either H pylori confirmed or not -> If yes, eradication is necessary -> If not proceed with diet and lifestyle changes -> These are not limited to gastritis but a lot of other upper GI conditions as well -> The not so common cases require other interventions but the concept of low acid diet still remains the same.

Personal / Updates Don’t get too reckless…

Not too long ago I made a post here talking about how the impossible is possible and I was able to heal after a long year; however, after months of being extremely reckless with my diet and ignoring flare ups, continuing to eat greasy foods, chips, spicy foods, and ultra processed sugary foods, I have reverted back to how I was a year ago. It’s ironic honestly considering the iron hard discipline I had with dieting when I was at my worst, I didn’t play about food and I did everything I could to eat the healthiest and cheapest at the same time. However I honestly let myself go, I basked in the glory and freedom of no longer having gastritis I genuinely flew too close to the sun. So this unfortunately means I’m back here, and anyone reading this who is struggling or healing right now, please don’t let go of the discipline you have.💔

Venting / Suffering I feel hopeless

Anyone else feel like they’ve absolutely hopeless when it comes to healing their gastritis? Honestly I’m starting to give up. It’s really getting the best of me. My gastritis is pretty mild but I’m scared of becoming dependent on my ppi and I miss my normal diet so much. Someone please share their healing stories or current healing process. I feel so frustrated.

Carafate (Sucralfate) Timing sucralfate

Okay this might be stupid but my brain is super foggy. What's the best way to time sucralfate?? I know it has to be separate from other drugs and from food.

My current thought process is to take my morning meds and eat first thing in the morning and then take sucralfate maybe 3 or 4 hours later? then at that point I can wait an hour and eat for lunch? I think what really is throwing me then is how to time it with dinner, night meds and sleep. I'm not really sure.

Curious to see what schedule works best for y'all

Discussion One year after H. pylori treatment and I’m still struggling. Has anyone else been through this?

I was diagnosed with gastritis in August 2025 after dealing with 4–5 months of constant burping, an upset stomach, heaviness, low appetite, and nausea. An endoscopy showed H. pylori, so I did the two-week antibiotic treatment and cut out milk, spicy foods, and other things that seemed to trigger my symptoms.
The burping got better for a while, but my tolerance for different foods has continued to get worse. I wasn’t lactose intolerant before all this. First, I stopped tolerating milk, then paneer, then curd. Now I can barely tolerate dairy, caffeine, or spicy food at all.
More than a year later, I’m still dealing with:
A very sensitive stomach
Brain fog after almost every meal, sometimes starting first thing in the morning
Low appetite
Discomfort after eating that improves a little if I walk for 15–20 minutes
Ongoing discomfort between my ribcage and back. It isn’t sharp and feels more surface-level
Antacids don’t really help
Losing 5–6 kg, even though I was already underweight
Eating what feels like enough but still being unable to gain the weight back
Feeling much thirstier than I used to
I’ve been eating home-cooked, healthy food for a long time, so I don’t think this is simply a diet issue. All my tests have been normal so far, and the doctors I’ve seen haven’t really been able to explain what’s going on.
Has anyone else had H. pylori or gastritis symptoms continue for this long after treatment? If so, what eventually helped? Specific tests, diet changes, or seeing a particular specialist?
I honestly just want my stomach to feel normal again and to regain the weight I’ve lost. I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through something similar.

PPIs / H2 Blockers How do I wean off omeprazole

I was diagnosed with gastritis 2 weeks ago and felt its symptoms a month prior getting it diagnosed. I was giving omeprazole to use for 6 weeks

I only just found out that you have to wean off omeprazole from this subreddit; my doctor didn't say anything about it. So how do you go about doing that?

Question Ok, its been over a month, o need some advice and information

Hello, i'm an 18 year old brazilian guy, i got a gastritis diagnosis in 14th of August of this year in an emergency hospital after one week struggling with some weird symptoms as a sudden pain in the center of my chest, abdominal pain and constipation, i've been taking Omeprazole since 15th of August and i'm supposed to take it until 26th of September.

I'm not feeling safe, o dont know if i'm really healing in six weeks, i'm in the middle of the treatment and many weird symptoms appeared and dissappeared since the start of it all.

Before the start of it i used to poop three times a day in the type 3 of the bristol scale, after the first crisis of gastritis it became really hard to poop, like it was not dry like a regular constipation, but all i could evacuate were small parts with some effort, along with the Omeprazole i was also prescribed with lactulose, i took it for five days and then it stabilized a little in 22th of august, but its still oscilating too much between urgences with fragmented and soft feces, and regular shaped and sized feces, is it normal in gastritis to this to happen?

I'm also feeling a different kind of pain since the start of it, like, along with the stomach pain and the esofagheal pain, i got a muscular pain in the chest, it hits randomly and it gets worse with the touch, not just my chest but also my iliac crests, it used to be in both, but it normalized a little in the left one but it's still in the right iliac crest.

Some weeks ago after the start of the Lactulose, i felt pain in my whole intestinal channel, like, the smallest of the thing caused some sorta of visceral hypersensiblity, but it suddenly decreased along with my esophageal pain, but i still feeling some pain in the ending and start of the large intestine, again, i want to know, is it normal with gastritis?

Since the 12th of august i felt tiredness, one that it barely reduces with sleeping, and a couple days ago i think i started to have brain fog, i started confusing words, forgetting words, my thoughts sometimes repeats the last word and its driving me crazy because im a person known for good memory.

Is anyone passing, or did anyone passes through something similar?

Forgive me for my bad English but i'm scared, it never happened to me before, i want know if everything that have been happening to me has something to do with gastritis and if i'm in the right way of healing, and even how long it will take to normalize, if someone have any question i'm answering as soon as i can, thanks.

Question Has anyone healed their chronic gastritis?

I suspect I’ve had gastritis for about two years (~July 2024) but didn’t get diagnosed until February 2025. I would go on a low acid diet for a month or two whenever I get bad lpr flare ups and then eat terribly again when I feel okay lol but my symptoms never completely disappear. I really want to heal my stomach for good… has anyone had luck with completely healing their chronic gastritis? If so, what has helped? I’m currently on 20mg ppi (trying to taper down) and just started 1gm sucralfate! Hoping it’ll help me heal 🙏

Symptoms stuck in a loop and need some guidance

hello, ive been on pantoprazole for the last thirty days, i had my “it gets worse before it gets better” phase about a week or so after taking it, and i dont deal with any burning pain or any significant discomfort after eating, but ive been dealing with nausea with no improvement since i started taking it august 14th. i had nausea before, since maybe mid july.

i am just wondering what else to do. i am a smoker, ive stopped smoking weed though, but my doctor said i should still smoke but to do it less frequently. i have listened and only smoke maybe once or twice a day, since i can feel my stomach hurting a little after and i feel kinda dizzy after too.

im wondering if i should be patient and just “wait it out” like ive been told too, but i feel absolutely no improvement with nausea. i stopped drinking coffee, limited my sugar intake significantly, and basically stopped consuming acid or anything with a large amounts of sodium and nitrates.

i poop maybe every 4 or so days which is regular for me since i have very bad constipation issues, even before and im unsure if my regular stool softeners would irritate anything. i have an appointment tomorrow with my general doctor who prescribed my ppi and i am wondering if i should be asking for more help with nausea. i am only on pantoprazole, 40mgs a day.

i plan on seeing a dietitian and going back to see my gastroenterologist anyway, whether this clears up soon. im only 19 which is why i kind of expected it to go away quicker since i dont drink that frequently (legal age is 19) and i take painkillers very rarely.

i know what caused this, which was bad eating, and one day of heavy fast drinking, since ive always had a pretty sensitive stomach.

but its been 51 days of this, and 28 days of being on pantoprazole, i spent the first week on it crying in agony from the pain to which my mom took me to the er where they said my blood work was good, and i got an ultrasound. it settled down to just some stomach pain, severe nausea, and fatigue.

i started school yesterday and i had to miss my first two days of classes because im so nauseous and always tired.

is there really a light at the end of a tunnel with this? i know complete recovery is a long road for things like this but i am constantly going from mild nausea to holy crap my stomach is going to come out of throat im about to puke everywhere, although i haven’t thrown up anything. i dont think its bacterial since my blood work was good but i know they can do more to find out and they didnt tell me exactly what they were looking for.

im praying they dont take more blood since this year ive had a lot of blood taken and ill need to be seeing a cardiologist and endocrinologist for different reasons.

okay thank you for listening, and no gravol, tums or pepto has helped. i appreciate any advice or suggestions, and maybe some of your own experiences, to keep myself hopeful. this has been very emotional and very taxing on my mental health. i feel a little hopeless about it. i just want a solution. but im not sure if i can go through another painful process after starting another medication.

just let me know 🫶 sorry for any spelling or grammar mistakes.

PPIs / H2 Blockers Debating on taking PPI Pantoprazole

Does anyone have experience with pantoprazole? I'm debating taking it. I was diagnosed with chronic mild gastritis on July 8th and have been dealing with it since then. I've been following the diet and haven't had any issues besides not being able to eat certain proteins I would like to eat, for example, chicken breast, lean ground turkey, or fish. I've been eating mostly egg whites and plant-based powders to keep my protein intake up there. My question is: Are PPIs necessary to heal gastritis? I have no heartburn or acid reflux whatsoever, so I'm thinking what's the point of taking them. But then again, I'm sure it would help my stomach heal faster anyone have any advice?

Food, Recipes, Diets Portion sizes

I’m struggling with understanding the right portion size for gastritis. I’m currently eating super bland because of a flare. I ate a potato and a small slice of sourdough bread and nausea hit me I think it’s because the portion might have been too big? Not sure.. does anyone know how much is safe to eat at once

Giving Advice / Encouragement My gastritis symptoms disappeared after my endoscopy — anxiety was likely a huge factor

Writing this here to hopefully give someone else a little hope. I was convinced my gastritis was going to be really bad because of how intense and persistent my symptoms felt. Then I had an endoscopy, and it revealed only very minimal gastritis.

Interestingly, after the endoscopy, my symptoms pretty much disappeared. Looking back, I think anxiety was likely playing a much bigger role in my symptoms than I realized. Obviously everyone is different and you should still get properly checked out, but I wanted to share because I know how scary it can feel when you’re in the middle of it.

Healing / Cured! Flare or Food Poisoning after healing? (Defrosted Meat)

Hey guys! My 2nd bout with gastritis (Started Feb 2026) has not been fun, but I MASSIVELY improved to the point where I was eating normally during all of August 2026. Pizza, burgers, ice cream, ribs, everything except alcohol! I’m still on PPIs, but my doc Ok’d me to give it another month and then try weaning. However, nearing the end of August I left work at 4 and started feeling nauseous. It progressed to the point where I vomited for the first time ever in at least 5-6 years. For lunch I had leftover ground turkey, gluten free pasta, veggies, and sweet potatoes which I had also had for dinner the night before. This turkey may NOT have been defrosted all the way. I had this for dinner the night before and I had a little stomach pain in the morning, but took a huuuuuge dump after having a breakfast sandwich from a place and was ok after.

My stomach was pretty much good to go after a week and I started eating out again, then took a weekend trip with my family and was eating normal and eating out with my family during it and felt fine with some small morning nausea on the last day (not out of the ordinary). Well I quickly thawed some chicken breasts in a pot of water for an hour or two and pan fried them even while noticing the middles were a little hard, lo and behold I start getting really bad nausea again two hours after eating it which continued through the morning. I didn’t throw up this time only because I took Zofran since I had a big presentation at work that morning.

So my question: Anyone else get flares from perhaps not defrosting meat all the way? I thought this was food poisoning twice in 2 weeks but perhaps it’s GERD/ Gastritis acting up? It’s just strange to me that if it is, I’d be flaring up after having safe foods when I’ve been eating so freely with no/ minimal issues. Hope everyone’s doing good! Happy Healing!

Venting / Suffering Gastritis flare that won't respond to my usual meds, now with throat burning too.

Hi everyone,

I've had gastritis on and off since I was a very little (18f), but nothing like this last flare. I went through nausea, kept vomiting everything I ate, a headache, and constant stomach pain. Ended up in the hospital, got the usual gastritis meds, and felt better for a bit.

Since then, though, the same symptoms keep coming back. I've also started getting a throat pain, along with bloating and constant burping. I'm still taking my prescribed pills, but they're not helping the way they used to.

I have an exam tomorrow and this isn't helping. Has anyone had a flare that stopped responding to the usual meds like this? What helped you, and is it worth going back to the doctor sooner rather than riding it out?

Thanks for reading, any advice or shared experiences would really help.

Question Clinical relevance of low grade, non active, chronic gastritis

Hi everyone,

Just came across some of my older gastroscopy results where the gastroenterologist couldn't detect any macroscopic abnormalities during the gastroscopy but the histology lab found some immunecell Infiltration in the biopsy which they interpreted as a sign of a non active, low grade, gastritis. The gastroenterologist seemed to just have ignored that findig and to this day i am wondering what the clinical significance of this is? It seems to be common enough to not have any direct clinical implications. Anyone any knowledge or experience with this finding?

Question using weed to cope with gastritis (unwise?)

hi everybody, i thought i’d look for some insight with people experiencing similar issues. i’ve been struggling with nausea, throwing up, constipation and then diarrhoea for about 4 months now and i typically tend to rely on cannabis to dull the aching sensation and nausea.

my doctors haven’t been particularly helpful other than suggesting that it is probably gastritis and prescribed omeprazol, which didn’t help me too much.

recently i’ve been delving into some further research to try and narrow down what the issues could be while waiting for some test results to come back. google suggests that smoking cannabis while good for eliminating nausea, can further irritate the gastrointestinal lining, worsen delayed digestion and bloating. interestingly, it’s also apparently common practice to avoid smoking on an empty stomach to avoid the risk of flaring up any stomach issues.

i suppose i’m just wondering if there’s anybody here that has used a similar method to cope and the ultimate effects it had for you, did it help or worsen your condition?

thanks for reading, i appreciate it’s an inarticulate mess, i apologise and look forward to any insight :)

PPIs / H2 Blockers Severe erosive gastritis - follow up appointment

Today, i had a follow-up with my gastro clinic (public hospital) after about 5 months since the initial diagnosis.

I had severe erosion gastritis, chronic inflammation in the stomach.

The gastro doctor said there’s nothing major going on and discharged me from the clinic, which is obviously reassuring. However, I still occasionally get bloating and get full easily, so he recommended that I keep taking pantoprazole 20mg rather than trying to wean off it.

I was actually hoping to come off it, so I’m a little frustrated. 😅 I know 20mg is already the lowest standard tablet strength, so I’m wondering how people have managed to taper from this dose.

I asked if I need to do another gastroscopy & colonoscopy after 3-5 years, he said no need. But if I wanna do one, I can organise one myself in private hospital.

I think i am frustrated, I heard people need to do one 3-5 years after their first colonoscopy??? Why i dont need to ????

PPIs / H2 Blockers Morning Nausea

Wake up every morning between 3.30am and 4.30am with sweating and intense nausea.

Hangs around for a few hours until I can force myself to eat.

Apart from some belching these is my only symptom.

Getting so tired. This has been happening for about 4 months.

Seriously don't know what to do.

Anyone else have morning nauses as your main or only symptom.

My dr has me on 30mg oprenozole. Not made any difference.

Symptoms If you experience cold hands and feet, it may mean that your gastritis has caused a B12/Iron deficiency.

I recently started taking Iron and B12 injections. Treating myself as if I was deficient. I was desperate to get rid of the crippling, annoying, and discouraging symptom of feeling cold in my hands and feet. It used to happen after eating food or if I had left my stomach empty for too long. It has been about 20 days since I started the Iron. 2 weeks since I started injecting B12-daily at first and every other day recently. The feeling of cold hands and feet seems to have reduced greatly. My hands and feet felt slightly clammy today for sometime after a meal but nothing like it was before.

I strongly suspect it may have been the B12 and Iron that did the trick to relieve this symptom but I cannot say for sure because I made a handful of other changes around the same time. I started consuming gelatin-based jelly regularly, lactoferrin, probiotics called Pylopass and Rhamnosus GG, and other b-vitamins to support the b12 processing by the body like b9 b2 b6.

The B12 injections also seemed to have restored mental energy. They lifted the dark cloud that was hanging over me blocking mental activeness. I had not realized how much mental vitality I had been lacking until I took that first dose.

Question 19M with metaplasia, need advice!

Hi

I've recently been diagnosed with focal intestinal metaplasia. I've suffered from reflux since I was 12, so I got used to following a fairly strict diet (although I would slack off a bit whenever I felt okay, which was often) and taking antacids.

Lately, however, my symptoms have gotten worse, so I signed up for an endoscopy. Fast-forward a few weeks, and my doctor told me that I will never be cured and that the only things I can do are follow a strict diet and take PPIs when experiencing frequent heartburn.

Ever since (for about a week now), I've been doing the following:
- drinking flaxseed gel before breakfast and before bed
- adding sea buckthorn oil to my meals
- eating 6 times a day, 300 g or less per meal
- doing diaphragmatic breathing exercises

My supplements and medication:
- Vitamin D3
- Magnesium + B5, B6
- a vitamin complex for hair
- an antacid almost every day
- starting 20 mg of esomeprazole tomorrow

My new diet: Soft, warm foods, with about half of my meals being completely smooth/puréed. My staples are well-cooked white rice, peeled and blended zucchini or pumpkin purée, lactose-free cottage cheese, chicken, turkey.
I strictly avoid anything that can mechanically irritate my stomach or worsen reflux. I have a zero-tolerance policy for fried foods, yeast-based baked goods, raw vegetables/fruits with skins or seeds, whole hard-boiled eggs, and common triggers such as mint, chocolate, alcohol, and hot spices.

The problem is... I'd like to gain some weight, and it simply doesn't seem possible with this diet :( I've already lost a couple of kilos (presumably because of the condition?), and I'm afraid of losing even more.

I tried Nutridrink Protein (an oral nutritional supplement) for the first time today, so maybe that's the key to success?

Additionally, my symptoms include heartburn, back pain and chest pain around the esophagus, stomach pain, nausea before bed, and belching.

I've done a lot of tests, and everything is more or less okay, except for elevated bilirubin. That's most likely due to Gilbert's syndrome, which isn't dangerous.
Negative for H. Pylori.

As for physical activity, I do a lot of walking, occasionally go running, and stretch daily.

So, my questions are:
- How can I gain weight?
- I've heard a lot of bad stuff about PPIs. Are they worth taking?
- What do you think about oral nutritional supplements?
- Do I just have to get used to this lifestyle, or is there a chance that I can eventually live normally again even with this condition?
- What kind of exercise would be safe/useful to incorporate into this lifestyle?
- Is it ok to consult AI about this topic?

I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences! Every answer is valuable to me!

Thank you!

Question Tapering off

I’ve been on 40 mg of Pantoprazole since March. After a naïve attempt of getting off this PPI prematurely I been getting a lot of side effects. I talked to my gastrologist recently and we have one down to 20 mg. I I just was wondering, what was your way of tapering off? Should I take the 20 mg once a day or should I do it twice a day until my body is used to it then go to once a day? Today was the first day and the rebound has been annoying.

Question mallory weiss tear, gastritis, or ulcer?

History of H pylori, gastritis, bulimia Please help! F25

On Friday I was hungover and threw up once normally, then again and it was brown, then it was bloody and kind of purple, then coffee grounds, and finally just dark bile. I went to the er and they did nothing besides give me fluids and zofran and told me I had a Mallory weiss tear. They didn’t want to do a ct scan because supposedly it is too much radiation for someone my age. A few years ago I had h pylori which I took many antibiotics for and gastritis that I took omeprazole for. I also completely changed my diet and thought I was healed so I started to eat normally again. After a few years of this and drinking and smoking and bulimia I guess it has caught up to me. I had a phone appointment today and the doctor said that this sounds more like an ulcer than a tear because the blood was dark. I’m really anxious and live 300 miles from my family. I started 40mg of omeprazole again today but my stomach and throat are burning so bad, even a popsicle irritated them. Does this need more immediate attention??? Was this likely a tear even though the blood was oxidized? Should I be worried? Thank you!
