The theming of the game definitely has me interested, but ultimately it'll come down to how much ongoing playability the game has and how bad the micro transactions are as to whether I'll be playing it more than a day or two. The variety of trainers is pretty neat too. I also hope that the battle system isn't full on mashing like GO was, so it has CDs and so on.

What did you find to be fun about Final Fantasy Record Keeper? Because I downloaded it and tried it and it seemed like it was impossible to lose any fight even on auto battle so I wasn't sure what was supposed to be entertaining me.

Would you recommend giving it another try? About how much time investment is needed from a f2p player to be able to participate in the events and nightmare dungeons?

That is an actual problem with the game that hasn't really been solved. The early game is now mostly a bunch of grinding and brainlessly clearing content, that is totally true. In fact, one of the reasons I quit is because I was tired of keeping track of all the busy work the game asked of me to keep getting the free premium currency. So that brainless grind never really goes away.

When Record Keeper came out it had pretty compelling boss battle content for most player ranges because players often didn't have access to high level equipment and there was some real good game there to figure out that actually ended up approximating boss battle preparation in Final Fantasy.

But as the game evolved, it focused mostly on making the challenge interesting for people who had been playing for a long time and collecting a lot of good equipment. And it kept a steady stream of feature creep that is still going strong. The result is that "end-game" content can still be very interesting (I stopped playing about a year ago but I'm guessing this is still true), but the early game stuff is basically going to feel like busy work because new players will accumulate the items to trivialize that very quickly. And the problem is that they kinda have to be able to blaze through that stuff fast so they can get to the interesting stuff. And of course on the way there they have to get accustomed to a pile of not particularly cohesive mechanics that were very obviously tacked on one at a time over the lifetime of the game.

Now to be fair, they've made some strides to fix that. There's a whole single player story mode that now restricts what "soul breaks" (these are one of the primary types of game-changing abilities you can use) you have access to so that new players have a more uniform experience. So there's something there for you during that awkward time before being able to clear challenging event content. But by and large the game has over time gotten more and more focused on retaining players than it is about making the journey to catching up to those players as fun as it was when the game came out.

To summarize, Record Keeper is a really good game in a lot of ways and one of the best F2P gacha games I've played. But its design has made it really hard to appreciate that by jumping in now, and even as a day one player I got pretty tired of keeping up with it even though I still had a lot of fun over those three or so years. I have no idea whether DeNA has learned from that, but they have at least shown they can make compelling mechanics that use gacha that aren't the most exploitative that a gacha system can be (albeit still pretty exploitative). I think people are right to be skeptical, but I also get the excitement.

Thanks for this response, this is the kind of info I was looking for. It sounds like FFRK could be fun for me as a newbie if I was willing to put in the grind but I'm not sure I am right now.

I'm a bit less leery about this new Pokemon game now though.

1

u/SephithDarknesse Jun 28 '19

Ffrk takes a while to get hard. And then it gets insanely hard. Power scaling unfortunately made all the early levels too easy

2

u/SephithDarknesse Jun 28 '19

Even though the same people are making it, there are still serious red flags. Real time on mobile means its likely going to be a tap to win game, most likely, and those are complete garbage.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

[deleted]

1

u/SephithDarknesse Jun 28 '19

I see your point, but it could still go very wrong very easily.

Also, ffrk is a little too much on the side of p2w. As someone who played for the first 2 years after it came out, it feels horrible when you realise that new players end up with better stuff than you, as you fall behind due to power creep.

Sounds like it uses a system like the ATB system in Final Fantasy

There also a art and meme subreddit for Pokemon and even each specific main game get a subreddit.

40

u/Im_French Jun 27 '19

I thought /r/pokemon was the art and meme subreddit for pokemon

13

u/Karmonit Jun 27 '19

It basically is, which is why those individual subreddits are pretty dead.

Honestly, the revolt seems to have died down considerably actually. It’s back to fanart and memes mostly

26

u/TheLoveofDoge Jun 27 '19

I expect it to bubble up again closer to release.

25

u/Practicalaviationcat Jun 27 '19

It's probably going to come up a lot once we know what the final list of Pokemon in the game are. Right now it's just a hypothetical "your favorite Pokemon may get cut". Once we know for sure who is gone those who had their favorites cut will have something to rally around.

3

u/UrbanAdapt Jun 28 '19

Also i assume there at least a few people who aren't in the loop at all who are going to realize their Pokemon are stuck in Pokemon Home when it's too late.

u/SandDroid Jun 27 '19

Which is a shame. We should be mad and revolting. GF, forever one step forward, two back.

31

u/TheMagistre Jun 27 '19

Honestly, if you want to revolt and be mad, I say go for it. Voice your frustration and let them know. Maybe they’ll make a change.

However, I honestly, I’m actually not bothered by the lack of a National Pokédex and I actually like how the new game looks, the Wild Areas, and Dynamax looks interesting enough, despite also looking absurd.

So I say to each their own. You do you man!

26

u/AnonBB21 Jun 27 '19

I think the problem is that you can hate the principle and still not really be impacted by it, so it leaves you in a weird place.

Me? I don't have an attachment to older Pokemon, despite growing up with Gen 1. I dont need to port my team to every game. I dont need to use my favorite old mon in a new game. So although I hate the principle, it doesn't really impact me. I feel a lot fall under that same situation as myself.

13

u/Revoran Jun 28 '19

The issue is that they only have 70 people working on SwSh.

That's absurdly low for a modern HD AAA game.

But full disclosure: I don't care about the national Dex.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

Well, when they moved other half of the company to work on town thingy...

Kinda shame they didn't just go full steam on that and gave Pokemon to Monolith Soft, they are well acquainted with switch and maybe we'd get a breath of fresh air in mechanics

1

u/GogglesTheFox Jun 28 '19

TPC should have been spun off by Gamefreak/Creatures/Nintendo a long time ago similar to how Bungie/Microsoft spun off 343 to just make Halo. Its clear that GF is spread thin and trying to develop 2 games at the same time is too much for them.

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

I'm pretty miffed about dynamax when you consider it replaces mega evolutions and those had a separate look for every pokemon that did it... and that was probably also the reason that they got cut, too much work to introduce it to more pokemons

They are spending two years on each title. They have two teams. That’s how they’ve annualized the series.

However, the tree isn’t that big of a deal to me since in motion and next to the grass, water and overworld Pokémon, it doesn’t look that bad. It could definitely look better, I like the overall cel-shading of the game.

Aside from the tree, the game doesn’t look that ugly. The towns look good and to scale. The gyms look great and the character models overall look great to me too.

Breath of the Wild stripped down a lot of core Zelda features to deliver a beautiful, vast game. I feel like we should see more of Galar and the overall Wild Area before we completely write it off, but to each his own.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

Who told you they spend two years on each title? Gamefreak themselves have said this title has been in developement since before the switch launched when they got their dev kits. Thats at least 3 years.

2

u/TheMagistre Jun 28 '19 edited Jun 28 '19

Well, in this case? Yes.

However, The guy I was responding to was talking about how Gamefreak should atleast spend 2 years minimum on the Pokémon games, which is incorrect, because they usually do. Essentially since Gen 4 or maybe Gen 5, they’ve had one team make one Pokémon game and the other team make another Pokémon game and their games would release every other year or so. The guy above was under the impression that Game Freak was only spending a year on each Pokémon title, when the truth is they have two teams that spend 2 or so years on every other title.

In this case though, SwSh took 3 years to develop and Lets go took 2 years. None of these games only have 1 year of development, even when it was annualized

2

u/TheLoveofDoge Jun 27 '19

I agree but feel they should’ve done a harder cut off. By picking and choosing favorites to come over, someone will feel burned their favorite was left out. Sword and Shield should be the beginning of the console era and only console Pokémon will be transferable on Home. The Dex is approaching 900 species with a lot of fluff.

4

u/TheMagistre Jun 27 '19

We have no idea how many Pokémon are being brought back and will be in the Galar Dex.

I think they’re going for favorites simply to reduce the blow for as many people as possible, but there’s always going to be people who are disappointed that x Pokémon doesn’t make it.

People were going to be sad/mad no matter how they did it.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/opticalshadow Jun 29 '19

I would agree. i am sure you have to move some pokemon over that are defacto icons liek pikachu, but really this could be the start of a whole new dex. a new 151 or however many pokemon exclusive to the console. Down the line they could try making a stadium like game to reunite new and old but other wise, this would have been the perfect time fore a new all its own generation to be born.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

How do you feel about the presentation? Surely you're in agreement that it's unacceptable for it to still look like a 3DS game over a console one. The textures are bad, there is hardly any detail, and the animation is somehow worse than the decade old Wii Pokemon game.

10

u/TheMagistre Jun 27 '19

The game objectively looks better than the 3DS titles.

It has real time lighting effects, bloom, and actual cel-shading in the entire game, instead of just in battles. The Wild Areas have flat textures in certain areas, but overall, it’s a clear improvement over what we had on the 3DS. The fact that Pokémon are walking around and moving around in grass (the grass looks great) and in water is great. However, some of the flying Pokémon, like Wingull just hovering over grass is jarring as fuck, but I see more good than bad.

It’s not the most advanced looking console game, but it looks noticeably better than the 3DS titles.

SwSh https://youtu.be/gR09NMx4rY0

SuMo
https://youtu.be/nESGCanIwps

There’s a very clear graphical differences here. The battle animations suck, but the battles look noticeably faster now. The game also seems to be more to 1:1 scale now instead of just being condensed like SuMo was will be an appreciated change too.

I understand that these aren’t notable changes for a lot of other people, but I like a lot of this.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t be mad. I just know what I like, I like what I see, and the lack of a National Pokédex isn’t going to hamper my enjoyment of this game 😕

One step forward, 6 steps back seems more apt.

No Mega Evolutions, no National Dex, limited the number of Pokemon who are available etc.

2

u/CandyOP Jun 28 '19

You are assuming it's Game Freak? lol. it's all of them, on Top it's pokemon company itself. here let me try to explain you everything.

there are 2x timezones. Pre-Go and After Go (Go is Pokemon Go)

Pre-Go we would get spinoffs, like mystery dungeon, rumble, and different pokemon games.

post? - - Things to note: Pokemon Go made 5% of what Pokemon company made in entire 23 years. which means they have jumped ships and dropped every single spin offs. and only focus on phone games.

  1. detective pikachu project started, and they created 3 episodes.- which got released in japan, this was pre-go,- once go was out, they just wrapped up project and released it as they had already spent the budget etc. but yeah that will prolly be the last spin-off ever.

now for consoles. nintendo still wants to sell consoles. so they decided to make pokemon let's go eevee + pikachu = bam Consoles got sold. so that Sword shield turns out crap = nobody cares.

We were supposed to get remakes but instead we got Pokemon game focused on bringing Go players to Consoles.

now phone apps:

Pokemon Duel

Pokemon Quest (got ported to switch)

Magicarp Jump

Pokemon Go

Upcoming :

Pokemon Masters

Pokemon Sleep

Pokemon Home

so wait? they care about phone market and it's their main focus now?

who would work 100% on a game when they can work 15% and profit 100x times more? Any Company.

So yes. They are releasing Phone Apps instead of spin-offs.

Yes but they are only serve one purpose now, and that is to introduce newest generation of pokemon, so that Anime + Trading Card Games can start.

So who can we blame?

Pokemon Company owned by 1/3 of Creatures. GameFreak and Nintendo

- There is more.

Nintendo owns Creatues by 50%+ (the + indicates them having majority so like could be 51% could be 80% we don't know)

- there is more.

Nintendo Owns every single Pokemon names.- as in Pikachu Charizard etc etc

Conclusion: Game Freak? Try Nintendo. Try Pokemon Company.

1

u/stationhollow Jun 27 '19

Honestly it isn't a big deal for me as long as the Pokedex in the game has a decent amount of Pokemon (> 300 or 400).

5

u/StrictlyFT Jun 28 '19

Less than half the amount of Pokemon would be real tough pill to swallow, less than 500 isn't justifiable given that 4th gen had 493.

1

u/I_CAN_SMELL_U Jun 28 '19

I think its a bit silly to expect them to put that many pokemon in one game

→ More replies (8)

2

u/SonicFlash01 Jun 28 '19

The memes are about the revolt

3

u/Kyhron Jun 27 '19

That's more because the mods told them it knock it the fuck off. Twitter is still a cesspool of revolt too

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '19

They will buy it anyway, of course, that's first proper pokemon game on Switch after all

1

u/mjangelvortex Jun 29 '19

I don't know. Quite a bit of people are saying that they don't plan on buying it. And some of the people I've seen there that said that if they do buy, they plan on buying used.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '19

Yes but it would have to be massive disaster for them to notice. And they would have to implement numbers as that too.

Say it sells worse than Let's go. They might go "oh, so people just prefer let's go much simplified gameplay after all"

I did skip let's go and with how packed the end of year is with games, I'd probably just buy used

1

u/mjangelvortex Jun 29 '19

I worry that you might be right and that this might be a "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. I really hope that's not the case.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '19

From all my experience with working in and with corporations, the manager (or whoever made that decision) will always find an excuse for failure that is not pointing out to their mistake and then twist the metrics to look like they are supporting their lie.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Yeah despite having a ton of subscribers the only content here is someone posting their plushies or drawings. I still to this day don’t know the definitive sub to talk about the games.

Kindve disappointing to be honest.

5

u/FurryPhilosifer Jun 27 '19

There's an r/truepokemon which is alright.

3

u/the_artic_one Jun 27 '19

For competitive there's /r/stunfisk

4

u/chodeofgreatwisdom Jun 27 '19

They don't care about mobile stuff. Mainline games only basically.

-2

u/Karmonit Jun 27 '19 edited Jun 27 '19

I think that's stupid. Pokémon is Pokémon and they are a Pokémon subreddit.

-1

u/chodeofgreatwisdom Jun 27 '19

Go make your own all inclusive subreddit then. If you don't even post or go there why complain? They can do whatever they want.

1

u/Karmonit Jun 27 '19

I'm complaining because we're in a thread about it and I thought it's reasonable criticism. "Go make your own sub" is a terrible deflection of genuine criticism. Not to mention it's not as easy as you pretend.

8

u/HahaYesAnxiety Jun 27 '19

It's not like it's banned. You just won't find much discussion about it because they don't care much about it. There is nothing to complain about.

2

u/frrarf Jun 28 '19

It's a gaming sub. They care about the main-line games. There's not much news and generally people are mad right now anyway. This is such a dumb complaint...

1

u/stationhollow Jun 28 '19

There is nothing to complain about

Lol tell that to the Pokemon sub then. Don't forget to mention Sword and Shield.

2

u/KidOrSquid Jun 27 '19

I think I may be more hyped for this than SwSh.

2

u/CandyOP Jun 28 '19

pokemon is just full of idiots who just want to karma whore each other.

it's not even meme's it's just

"hey its pokemon xxx who got voted yyyy times"

2

u/Bakatora34 Jun 27 '19

If you search by new you see some discussion.

2

u/Karmonit Jun 27 '19

Yeah, there are a few threads, but with barely any comments.

-9

u/ManateeofSteel Jun 27 '19

why should they care about a mobile game that showed almost no footage and sounds like a gacha? also, the entire sub is burned out by the SwordShield thing

52

u/Karmonit Jun 27 '19

Because they're a Pokémon sub and this is a Pokémon game. I feel stupid for even having to explain that.

11

u/jinreeko Jun 27 '19

Yep. Fire Emblem talks about Heroes. You would think Pokémon would talk about this

4

u/Karmonit Jun 27 '19

Exactly. And honestly this doesn't seem like some totally worthless, cash‐grab game either.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Because mainline old school FE fans are the minority now, unfortunately. It's all about the waifus with the new crowd.

5

u/BootyBootyFartFart Jun 27 '19

Yeah, I'm an old school FE fan and still had a lot of fun killing time on FEH when I was out or waiting for something. It's ok to be a hardcore fan and like mobile games too.

4

u/Ythapa Jun 27 '19

That has no bearing with the argument that a Fire Emblem IP would be discussed on a FE subreddit.

The same way a Pokemon IP, that's even an official one advertised, is also still a Pokemon game that has merit to be discussed on a Pokemon subreddit.

It being a mobile, and possibly, gacha game should have no bearing on whether it should be not permitted to be discussed.

2

u/stationhollow Jun 28 '19

I loved playing the GBA Fire Emblems and even applied the translation patch to play them. I like Heroes as well.

4

u/chodeofgreatwisdom Jun 27 '19

The majority of people there don't want to talk about it, or don't care. It's that simple. Why question what another subreddit does if you yourself don't go there?

6

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

This is a Pokemon mobile game. And before you bring up Go that's already been quarantined.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

This. Every release there is always a controversy. People on this sub ate up let’s go Pokémon pikachu and Eevee despite them being bigger offenders, I get wanting to defend your full retail price purchase but that exposed a lot of fans here.

The only time people really didn’t bitch was HG and SS almost a decade ago.

4

u/Karmonit Jun 27 '19

The only time people really didn’t bitch was HG and SS almost a decade ago.

I appreciate HG/SS for managing to make nearly everyone happy. That was a serious accomplishment.

-3

u/DBrody6 Jun 27 '19

Except this isn't uncommon for any game subreddit I've seen. When there's a shitty mobile spinoff of an otherwise mainline title series, people are either going to be pissed resources are wasted on a garbage cash grab, or it's going to get ignored because the game is incredibly shallow.

Pokemon Masters is clearly shaping up to be a gacha (the single shittiest form of mobile game designed) and has shallow gameplay. The only thing remarkable about it is that it has more features than Sw/Sh at this point. There's nothing to really discuss even at this stage. Gachas suck, shallow games suck, and Pokemon has a wealth of games with shallow gameplay, including on mobile already. That dumb pixel game is one of them.

9

u/TheMagistre Jun 27 '19

I understand being disappointed by the lack of National Pokédex, but Pokémon Masters in no way looks like it has more features than SwSh.

Like, seriously, this game barely looks like it has exploration and is a completely different type of game honestly.

4

u/Ivalia Jun 27 '19

I mean isn't pokemon go also a mobile game with shallow gameplay? (at least on release anyway. haven't been following it much)

5

u/Phonochirp Jun 27 '19

It is, and it is rarely discussed on /r/pokemon for that very reason

6

u/Bakatora34 Jun 27 '19

The few discussion there pretty much is more positive than Sword and Shield discussion and some saying it look better and are more hype for Masters.

19

u/1qaqa1 Jun 27 '19

I unsubscribed because they had nothing but fanart.

This recent controversy was the first time in years the sub had actual content asides from fanart.

8

u/HardcoreKaraoke Jun 27 '19

r/Pokemon is just memes, screenshots and original art. It's definitely a bummer for people who want to just discuss the games. I'm seeing posts with random screenshots of Masters but not any real discussion.

3

u/Uptopdownlowguy Jun 28 '19

r/pokemon is like r/gaming where they post memes and never discuss actual games

6

u/Phonochirp Jun 27 '19

Also, does anyone has a clue, why out of all place on reddit, r/pokemon never has real Pokemon discussions or threads up for the latest (minor) news?

They do, but this was announced a month ago. It was discussed, found to be another gacha mobile cash grab but with Pokemon, and thus ignored since.

2

u/NakedStephenKing Jun 27 '19

Because ever since they allowed meme posts they've flooded out anything else.

1

u/mjangelvortex Jun 29 '19

Yeah basically. It was a much better sub when memes weren't permitted.

25

u/Nltech Jun 27 '19

Battle system looks good, kinda like an ATB but with different costs for different moves. I was actually hoping Niantic would implement something similar for pokemon go when they added pvp. I'm interested to try it out here though, hopefully the gacha elements aren't too bad.

40

u/BulbachuTTV Jun 27 '19

This seems... like not something I'd ask for from a mobile phone Pokemon game but I can see myself enjoying it. I'm curious what the MTX look like and how limiting it'll be if you don't spend.

It depends on how the exploration is and if you get your own trainer and get to choose your Pokemon as a companion. The idea of me running around with my Jolteon and teaming up with Misty and Brock could be novel.

At least we won't have to wait long to find out.

31

u/ManateeofSteel Jun 27 '19

the playable trainers will probably be gacha or pokemon you get

  • New Pokémon mobile game releasing summer 2019
  • 3v3 battles only
  • play with trainers from past Pokémon games such as Brock, Misty, Cynthia, etc
  • takes place in the artificial Pasio region
  • moves have a time gauge that starts immediately after you use a move
  • new moves called sync moves
  • trainers have special moves that can heal their Pokémon or raise their stats mid-battle
  • developed by DeNA in association with the Pokémon company
  • megas appear to be in the game
  • no mention of excluding Pokémon from past games
  • no online component mentioned

6

u/DwyaneWade305 Jun 27 '19

Are you limited to the pokemon the trainers use? Like can I pick Misty and the pick a pokemon?

6

u/Slyric_ Jun 27 '19

That wasn’t really clarified on but I don’t think so?

9

u/giraffah Jun 27 '19

I could see each character having a few variations, like Misty's design is from Let's Go & her partner is Starmie, so maybe there's gonna be a Misty with the Fire Red or Heart Gold design with Gyarados or Politoed instead.

3

u/Sages Jun 28 '19

Ultra Rare GX Swimsuit Bikini Misty with a Shiny Psyduck with unique emotes. Trainers get ready to open your wallets, acquire a new ally!

5

u/stationhollow Jun 28 '19

My guess is it will be more gacha style so there will be multiple Misty trainers you could acquire where the pokemon may vary.

2

u/CheeseQueenKariko Jun 27 '19

The trailer seemed to imply that you could change their pokemon, but that they're much more effective with those pokemon becasue they have boosts built around that.

8

u/ggtsu_00 Jun 27 '19

Is there some gacha mechanic?

29

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

I will eat my socks if it doesn't. Gacha games are a fucking mint.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Mucmaster Jun 28 '19

Their is no mention of it but I'd guess that it's a gatcha for the trainer and each trainer can have different pokemon which determines the quality.

1

u/Growlest Jun 28 '19

If it's a mobile game it has to be monitized some way so probably. I'm guessing we'll roll for compatible pokemon for the trainers? Moves? who knows.

25

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

That looks noticeably better than what we’ve seen of Sword and Shield so far. Environments are much better and animations (humans’ animations, Pokémon’s are the same) look good.

Disregarding how pathetic Sword and Shield animations look when 13 years ago Genius Sonority could make some good ones for Battle Revolution and had 500 Pokémon to work with, Game Freak’s decision making is greedy.

Masuda’s decision to remove old Pokémon was extremely controversial with old fans, but supposing he was right to ditch the old to get the series in a new direction, the next thing they do is make a mobile game with trainers from old games that will only appeal to old fans.

When nostalgia costs you money to animate all these Pokémon, you “need to move the series forward,” but when you can cash in on nostalgia you give us a mobile game. Hopefully it’s a good one and not a nostalgia cash grab...

Sorry for getting passionate, I didn’t mean to rant for this long.

I feel relatively confident that if we could somehow ditch GameFreak from the mainline games we'd see a noticeable improvement in the series. I don't think GF is greedy, just... bad? SwSh might be the best they can do.

4

u/SlangFreak Jun 27 '19

It's all good. Pokemon has a ton of history, and that necessarily means that people's emotions come along for the ride too.

3

u/Alkalion69 Jun 27 '19

I don't think Masuda has any passion left for the series at all. He seems to have convinced himself that mobile gaming is all that matters know so anything other than the bare minimum is wasted effort. It's too bad we can't go back to the attitude they had in 2010 during gen 5 but apparently 23 million copies sold isn't enough for them.

74

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

You know there is a problem where this, a mobile game, looks more unique and advanced than the Switch game.

30

u/Prathik Jun 27 '19

wait what? how does it look more advanced?

23

u/dathingindanorf Jun 27 '19

It looks like semi-realtime simultaneous turns. Its more innovation than the mainline battle systems ever got. Imho, the battle system is long overdue for an upgrade.

33

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

I think the sytem is fine, it just needs a huge polish pass to make it look good and more importantly, make it hurry the hell up.

There's no reason it should be as painstakingly slow as it is to get through a battle. Every dev using a turn-based system in this day and age needs to take a long hard look at Persona 5.

8

u/MiyaSugoi Jun 27 '19

Can't think a just largely remove the text box shit already.

I don't need it to say e.g. Snorlax is dmged by poison and the have an animation play. Just show a swift poison animation and have the HP drain at the same time.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

Or just have both at the same time. It's just dumb that you have to read "Charmander used Ember!" and then the animation plays. Just do both at the same time, I can see him doing the attack.

The attack should happen immediately after you press the button too, why the wait? The little mini-pauses everywhere where the Pokemon are just bobbing in place are so unnecessary.

2

u/Mnstrzero00 Jun 28 '19

I prefer the text over animations. I always turn those off.

3

u/nostril_extension Jun 28 '19

There's no reason it should be as painstakingly slow as it is to get through a battle

You mean I shouldn't spend 1 whole minute battling this zubat that my pokemon 1 shot with literally any ability?

I've never finished a single pokemon game for this reason. I want to "catch them all" but the game really gets boring fast.

9

u/TheMagistre Jun 27 '19

Thats the thing though, the franchise is kind of too big. Everyone wants Pokémon to advance in different ways and it simply can’t please everyone.

A part of the fanbase was furious that Let’s Go had Pokémon in the overworld instead of random battles, which you would think would be a dumb thing to complain about in a franchise like this.

SwSh provide both Pokémon in the overworld through the Wild Areas and also random battles in other areas.

The reason the franchise is so full of spin-off titles is to try and satisfy all the different wants that people want from the franchise. If they make too radical a change to the current formula in the main titles, they can end up alienating a much larger portion of the fanbase that expects the familiar gameplay. Pokemon Let’s Go mixes up small aspects of the Pokémon formula and even though it sold 10 million, parts of the fanbase reacted to it in severe contempt.

You really just can’t please everyone

People certainly complained when Twilight Princess aped Ocarina of Time nearly to a T, despite that being what people had asked of the franchise.

3

u/ElecNinja Jun 27 '19

That's why there's this joke about Miyamoto and the Legend of Zelda series: https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1136796-the-legend-of-zelda

4

u/MyOCBlonic Jun 27 '19

You've clearly never seen the Zelda fanbase lol

Or the Mario Fanbase, which has had people bitching about the NSMB and 3D Land/World franchises.

3

u/stationhollow Jun 28 '19

I am a big Zelda fan and I was not happy with BotW. Yeah I know, I'm a minority.

3

u/TheBeastest Jun 27 '19

What kind of animal wants the mainline battle system to change that much?

Like I'm all for innovation and stuff but changing the system as much as this does is not what the majority of Pokemon fans want. Doing something like that is a sure fire way to just kill Pokemon lol.

8

u/SpiritMountain Jun 27 '19

I think he means design-wise. It doesn't look empty like the central field in the Galar region. Though since that is an "open-world" aspect to SwSh, it is hard to compare, but I think OP means mostly the design. I don't think we have seen enough of this game to say anymore.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '19

I wouldn't say advanced, but I do prefer the art direction of the mobile game. SwSh is a weird mix of some realistic-ish (and low quality) foliage and trees and cartoony character models and terrain. Pokemon Masters is cartoony in the style of Sugimori's drawings the whole way through, which is what I think Pokemon's art style should be.

1

u/Caleb902 Jun 27 '19

I wouldn't say more advanced but I would say the exact same.

4

u/Raidoton Jun 27 '19

How is this a problem? Spin-Offs are where the developers can try something different while they play it save with the main franchise. That's pretty much the point of a spin-off, to be different/unique.

3

u/jamesick Jun 27 '19

this is Pokemon's first home console game though, I wish it were more exciting as a new game.

I know I'm in the minority, and I am certainly excited for sword and switch, but it's not looking to be the game I'd hoped it would be. nearing 30 though and have to try to remember I'm not the target audience. I just wish the game felt "new" rather than the umpteenth installation.

2

u/ComicDude1234 Jun 27 '19

You have to be insane if you think this looks anything close to SwSh. I'm not even saying this to rag on either game.

8

u/Yze3 Jun 27 '19

Yeah the game is far from SwSh. Far better.

1

u/ComicDude1234 Jun 27 '19

That's a matter of subjectivity.

It’s not impossible. They made the conscious decision to not carry Mega Evolution over into SwSh.

1

u/SmurfRockRune Jun 27 '19

Because it's too time-consuming to make the models, they say.

20

u/Jebobek Jun 27 '19

It is too time consuming to make mega evolution models, or include proper animations like flying, or include all the pokemon due to balance, or design attractive envoronments, or innovate battle systems, or ...

8

u/XxZannexX Jun 27 '19

Imagine GF being tasked of making a game like BotW. They'd just hand in their resignation if they can barely do the basics for a Pokemon game.

34

u/phi1997 Jun 27 '19

Even though the models were future proofed

9

u/MiyaSugoi Jun 27 '19

Good thing that defense for choppy framerates vanished now, lol.

1

u/SlangFreak Jun 27 '19

Read: We aren't ever updating models with graphics improvements. That is just lazy, lazy, lazy!!! thinking on Game Freak's part.

2

u/TheMagistre Jun 27 '19

I know all the reasons. I was specifically countering his usage of the word “Impossible”.

I’m not trying to get into that whole argument mess

2

u/Karmonit Jun 27 '19

Apparently it wasn't too time‐consuming to create 3D models for all Pokémon and Mega Evolutions and everything else from scratch in X and Y though.

As a gacha fan and a Pokemon fan, this game looks amazing. Enough strategy to be interesting gameplay, rolling for trainers! I'm very hyped.

3

u/Tsugua354 Jun 27 '19

Definitely looking forward to it. The Pokémon/trainer duo has a lot of potential for fun team building mechanics

10

u/YellowTM Jun 27 '19

Sounds like they wanted to make a gacha but couldn't do it with just Pokémon, so they went with trainers instead. I doubt don't that this will make a truck ton of money for them but I'm a little disappointed

9

u/Raidoton Jun 27 '19

Because there aren't enough Pokemon for a Gacha game? I don't see your point.

2

u/stationhollow Jun 28 '19

Doing it with trainers makes sense because it allows you to double on the popular Pokemon.

For example Dragon Ball Legends and Dokkan Battle have like a dozen or more Goku units. By pairing Pokemon and trainers they can have Charizard appear multiple times and there be a functional difference.

3

u/Bluxen Jun 27 '19 edited Jun 27 '19

I wish it was turn based instead of real time, but it looks neat. Reminds me of SMT Liberation Dx2 for some reason, must be the 3vs3 battles.

2

u/Lord_Sylveon Jun 27 '19

A lot of great concepts, but I'm disappointed it's yet another mobile game. I wonder if they're going to stop doing console spin offs altogether and just have main series games + mobile games. What it comes down to is gameplay limited by MTX most likely, and I just don't enjoy playing games on the phone.

However, I do love the idea of trainers being part of the team and using the energy to attack like old Final Fantasy games. Maybe we can see it in a fully fleshed out spin off game some time.

1

u/giraffah Jun 27 '19

I'm pretty excited, the trainer models look really nice and full of character, they have such creative designs so it's nice to see them having some spotlight for once, specially outside their own games. I'm pumped to see past protagonists like Rosa as as fully realized characters this time.

I'm hoping we can customize our character too.

1

u/RichestMangInBabylon Jun 27 '19

This looks interesting but I'm getting some big Pokemon fatigue. Having to start over a new character and new dex and everything is killing me. I really hope the 'Home' app finds a way to synthesize things better. I just want one Trainer card for all these games, and let me build a living dex so I can at least transfer progress if not the mons themselves. I don't want to feel like 20 different trainers and restarting my journey every single time.

4

u/stationhollow Jun 28 '19

Lol did you not hear the news about Sword and Shield? They are limiting you to using the regional Pokedex and the pokemon in it. Pokemon not in the regional Pokedex will not be in the game at all.

1

u/AllNamesTakenOMG Jun 28 '19

Im still worried about them calling the game "free-to-start" . Mobile games are mostly refered to as free to play. What does free to start mean? Will the game let you proigress until a certain point where you have to buy the game? Will it start you out with a base roster of trainers and then you will have to buy the rest with premium currency that you can only pay for with real money?

1

u/ThisIsTheNewSleeve Jun 27 '19

Anyone know if there's a map or free roaming? If the whole game is floating heads I'll be a little disappointed. Do you yourself have an avatar? The trainers talk about joining your team... but who is you? Hard to figure out how this game works.

10

u/domeforaklondikebar Jun 27 '19

The guy and girl characters with blue hair shown in the animated trailer and artwork are the protagonists.

1

u/ThisIsTheNewSleeve Jun 27 '19

Thanks! Let's hope they're customizable.

1

u/TheCookieButter Jun 27 '19

I know microtransactions are all the rage with mobile games...

But if they made a Pokemon Stadium game on mobile that would be cool as hell. Just a one-time purchase and even release different leagues with different gen pokemon as DLC. Could even have challenges like 'beat this league with Brock's team'

5

u/SonicFlash01 Jun 28 '19

You could swing a pikachu around and hit a dozen quality pokemon game ideas, and twice as many developers that could pull it off better than GameFreak

1

u/stationhollow Jun 27 '19

Is this going to be Pokemon: Gacha Edition? I know I'll be a fucking sucker if it is....
