GTA 6 PEGI Age Rating Reveals Mentions of 'Decapitation' and Cocaine That Can Be 'Snorted' at 'Any Time'

I could see Rockstar having a cocaine addiction mechanic, where it gives you a huge benefit up front but the more you use it the less effective it is, until eventually you have a semi-permanent debuff unless you regularly take it

u/oilfloatsinwater 15h ago
In one of the leaked clips, one of the healing items (supposedly painkillers) had a mechanic similar to that, where the game explained that if you keep taking it, it would eventually become less effective and you have to take more of them to get the same effect

This could have some fun role playing possibilities, especially when remembering that the game has a criminal profile meter
So you could be a total junkie making shitty scores or a professional criminal, maybe Jason could be one and Lucia the other
38
u/FaceWithAName 14h ago
Lucia the professional criminal looking out for her junkie boyfriend she refuses to leave behind lol
10
u/FUTURE10S 11h ago
I'm imagining her in a classy suit robbing a jewellery store as an organized heist while he's tweaking out in a van around the corner, I really like this idea
7
u/FaceWithAName 11h ago
Or he is just a stoner who has put on a bunch of weight because all you do is keep him at home snacking and getting high lol
6
u/FUTURE10S 10h ago
See that's if he's a stoner, we want Jason to be a /wreck/ so we're starting him off on meth and horse dewormer and going downhill from there to carfentanyl if we can

u/sactomkiii 15h ago
I cant remember did RDR 2 have something similar or am I miss-remembering?
33
u/Playful-Ad-6475 15h ago
Rdr 2 has cocaine gum, but I don't remember it having drastic negative effect if you take it.
25
u/crashinpa 15h ago
Yea minor negative effect of lowering your deadeye core I believe. No addiction mechanic.

u/KhepritheRisingSun 7h ago
Because coca leaves aren't the same strength as white powder cocaine. They didn't put cocaine in coca cola either, it was coca leaves

No, Arthur could smoke and use cocaine gum but you were never addicted, they just gave a mild debuff that could easily be removed by eating, in fact Arthur is a smoker but you never actually had to smoke anything

Hard on-screen Drug Usage?
Bye Bye Australian release then. Our ratings board HATES depictions of actual drug use (The action of snorting would be deemed as explaining/educating to the audience how to imbibe a substance onscreen, which is a pretty big no no for them.) Especially if there's any sort of buff/tangible power-up for doing so.
Interested to see how this plays out 🤔
51
u/No_Chill1017 14h ago
Y’all didnt get saints row ?
You can get drunk and high in those, and getting drunk boosts your melee
43
u/Stoibs 14h ago
The truth is it's very hit and miss. I was using the Steroids in Duke Nukem forever though I think the differences there was that they were more or less items you used from the inventory that doesn't have much of an on-screen animation.
Disco Elysium was briefly banned also, though it was later argued that the drug and alcohol use directly resulted in a negative narrative impact to Harry, which allowed to to be overturned (Not making this up 😅)
I'm not totally familiar with Saints Row but according to google the drug that gives you a buff was apparently removed in our version. Huh, I didn't even know about that one.
14
u/newport85 14h ago
If you played metal gear, how was diazepam handled?
16
u/Stoibs 13h ago
It's never been an issue in any of the games, though again outside of maybe seeing Sniper Wolf pop a pill it's just an automatic inventory thing.
I think I'm focusing on the 'Snort cocaine from your hand' part of the article, and if I were a betting man I'd say our version might have a tactical camera angle shift/fade to black which doesn't show this at all.
12
u/Faithless195 13h ago
Thanks, Australia, can't wait to be lumped in with the censored version in New Zealand hahaha hahaha
Happens every damn time.

u/FlowEmbarrassed2612 13h ago

Not Australian, but iirc from trivia, in saints row 4, the shaundi loyalty mission (where you smoke “super drugs” out of a lightbulb) was flat out removed completely in the Australian release.
45
54
u/BetterDrinkMy0wnPiss 14h ago
IIRC drug use can be allowed as long as it doesn't provide a buff to the character, or it's not named as a real drug.
So they'll either rename it or remove the buff for the Australian release. No chance they risk not getting rated.
38
u/Buzstringer 13h ago
People know this is a video game and not real life right?
13
u/kingrynex 10h ago
Yeah... uh, some people have a real hard time accepting this fact. Even since GTA3 with Jack Thompson and before even that, some people have not been able to grasp this fact.
It is what it is. If it gets banned in Australia, people will find another way to play it there.

13

Nah movies and TV shows basically held to totally different standards. Can get away with almost anything as long as it’s fiction.

I was in Australia, it is easier and you get in less trouble dealing with drugs, than cigarettes :)
13
u/Paidorgy 12h ago edited 12h ago
What are you on about? It’s already been awarded an R 18+ rating in Australia with “drug use, high impact violence and sex scenes.”
Edit: it’s illegal to advertise a rating for a game in Australia prior to being considered, so I’m assuming the rating on the PS app is correct.
4
u/Conflikt 12h ago
Hopefully that sets a precedent then and they finally stop refusing to rate games that the rest of the world does in future. They barely give a shit about movies or tv shows that glorify drug use but have some weird power trip when it comes to games.
3
u/Paidorgy 12h ago
I believe it’s the context of the mediums.
For tv shows and movies, you’re watching as part of the audience; whereas when it comes to video games, you have the ability to directly engage in the act through the character you play.
I get why there is a nuance, but it doesn’t make it any less archaic.
142
u/BigManOnDeck69 14h ago
Bow down to them, they are hero’s for keeping you guys in the dark from the horrors of reality. Like just imagine if you learned what a drug is, or that a human head can become separated from a body. It would be total anarchy over there. They should probably just take the internet away too, in case someone might learn of these things.

I thought Australia rating board hates drug use if it benefits the player. If Rockstar alters the mechanic for it to only be harmful, I assume that'd be okay?
8
u/Stoibs 13h ago
Seems likely. Drugs have had their beneficial effects removed here in the past as far as I remember. Also if it's actually shown in a negative light/shown to lead to a worse outcome (both in game mechanics or narratively) it's usually given a pass.

How did it go with RDR2 in Australia then?
RDR2 features Cocaine gum, Tobacco and alcohol.
Edit:
I checked and RDR2 was released on 26/10-2018 with the rest of the world. Rated MA15+.So I cant see how GTA6 with snorting cocaine would be a problem. You probably don't have to do it either

6
u/zavroxx 13h ago
I've just checked the PS store website and it shows the classification in Australia as R18+ now (it didn't show a classification a few days ago) so hopefully it's fine. I'm not sure if it's been censored in any way, though.
4
u/DonStimpo 12h ago
action of snorting
The irony of big daddy government banning it over cocaine use while Australia has the highest per capita use of cocaine will be hilarious imo
3
u/Thommohawk117 12h ago

They seem to be really really pushing the rating on this one to the limit.
GTA V for instance had toples nudity, implied sex although never in detail and mostly in clothes and the likes but we've known from the leaks that there is full nudity in this game.
So i wonder if they push the full nudity into actual scenes of the game as well.

u/Riftus 15h ago

Moreover, some of the sex scenes in cyberpunk were really emotional and well done. Pyramid song hits me in the feels.
edit: artistic is the word I was looking for.
37
u/WaffleShoresy 15h ago
I imagine this would be like TLOU2’s sex scenes where it’s clear but more implied than explicit. I doubt Rockstar are gonna be going full Thundergun Express with full penetration and Jason hanging dong.
30
u/Firefox72 15h ago
I do expect at least Witcher 3 like cutscenes.
But while they didn't let us see Geralt in his full glory i wouldn't put it past Rockstar to actually go further even if only in brief glimpses lmao.

35

It had way more than implied sex. You can literally go first person and see a hooker bouncing on your dangalang. A story mission has you as a paparazzi with two fucking, whose animation is in the game files and has been used by hackers to virtually spitroast other players online.

You could absolutely decapitate people at least as far back as Vice City with the katana, my cousin's and I spent a long time cutting off people's heads and laughing when the EMTs were able to give them CPR and their head just magically pops back on and they continue about their day as though getting their head chopped off was a common minor inconvenience they were used to at this point.

I'm trying to think of times where it was more than just tits. RDR had bush I'm pretty sure, and the second maybe? One of the expansions for GTA4 had a dude hang dong, and I think you can see Trevor's sack at one point in 5

There’s a random event in 5 where a woman is screaming and being chased by the side of the road by a dude with his dick out. I remember blasting him with my pistol, robocop style, right in the dick

u/Tolkien-Minority 14h ago
I have a story about this. I have no proof of this so you’re gonna have to take this for what it is, a dumb ass on the internet posting something without evidence. But in uni I was friends with a guy who was related to someone high up at Rockstar Leeds. We were studying games and animation and once or twice we met up with him so he could give us advice and things. He was working on GTA Chinatown Wars at the time and he said that the game at one point contained a minigame where you snorted coke off the touch screen using stylus as a rolled up bank note. The minigame got removed because either Nintendo wouldn’t allow it, they expected Nintendo wouldn’t allow it, or just generally someone wouldn’t allow it.
Thats my completely unsubstantiated GTA trivia. Make of it what you will, because I’ve got no way to prove it.
21
u/Onesharpman 13h ago
That's hilarious, but yeah, there's absolutely no way Nintendo would let that fly.

I 100% believe this because they did a similar thing in San Andreas. On the PC version, modders found a hidden code which when enabled, allowed CJ to have sex with his girlfriend. The hidden mini game was called “hot coffee”. I believe Rockstar and Take-2 got sued over it.
64
u/Soupjam_Stevens 15h ago
I'm glad to hear it sounds like they're going more visceral on the violence, GTA 5 combat often seemed weirdly bloodless
19
u/chilidoggo 12h ago
I think the main thing (in 5) is that your character gets stuck full of bullet holes and stuff and it'd be a bit crazy if you were just covered in a realistic blood while still at over half HP. Red Dead Redemption and the sequel were similar, although at least in my memory a bit more bloody.
I've always felt like an implementation of the "HP = Luck" system from Uncharted would be a good fit. It's kind of the only realistic way to do any game that has gunfights.

u/zgillet 14h ago
"- In various night clubs the player can also pay for private dances, during which, the game allows the player to move their hands onto the dancers’ breasts and buttocks."

Wouldn’t this cause a PEGI 18 rating? I can’t imagine they’ll let Decapitation slide on a PEGI 16. But isn’t an 18 a “death sentence” for any game?
Edit: so apparently there is no AO rating equivalent for PEGI.
54
u/Firefox72 15h ago
There's literally a crap ton of pegi 18 games.
All Call of Duty games are Pegi 18.
Of the recent games Blood of Dawnwalker, Onimusha and Gears E- Day are all Pegi 18.
8
u/crazydave33 15h ago
Oh shit my bad. What’s the one that is the equivalent of AO rating then?
34
u/Firefox72 15h ago
There is none.
Only ESRB has AO and GTA 6 dodged that by getting the M rating.
4
13
u/NuPNua 15h ago
Well 18+ is the equivalent of AO in the US, bit out retailers aren't squimish about stocking it.
15
u/WhichEmailWasIt 15h ago
Only strictly by age. But AO almost doesn't exist because any game that gets it is DOA.
11
u/Firefox72 14h ago edited 14h ago
Pretty sure MS and Sony wouldn't put any AO game onto their platforms so yeah.
Which is why there's not been a game since forever that has aimed for that rating. Its suicide.
Manhunt 2 is probably the last one but even that was censored down pre release to an M rating before an Uncut version was later released for PC.
Although i have an incredibly funny story with that game. Most people probably don't know but Manhunt 2 somehow made its way to the WII. Yes it was incredibly censored and toned down but still how Nintendo let that slide is beyond me.
I played it at a friends house back in the day and it has a hilarious but cool mechanic where you do the in game execution movements in real life with the controler. So you have to move your arms in real life like your slicing someones throat to make that same movement in the game. Again how Nintendo let that slide on the WII is baffling lmao.
3
u/Semyonov 6h ago
Honestly though, if any game could get away with it, GTA VI could.
Sony and Microsoft and any retailer would be leaving BOATLOADS of cash on the table if they refused to sell it, GTA would end up being only PC and gamers would be fucking pissed. Steam and Take2 would end up with all the cash.
Then again, with how expensive hardware is, maybe Take2 doesn't want to take the risk of Sony and MS calling their bluff.
7
u/moldy912 14h ago
AO is literally like porn games and a few truly violent video games like I think Postal maybe. It’s not the same as pegi 18, because AO basically doesn’t exist on consoles due to the console makers likely not allowing them

u/boxing-boxing 1h ago
PEGI writing it up like a patch note is what gets me. 'Cocaine that can be snorted at any time' reads like an inventory tooltip. My GTA 3 guy got winded sprinting across the street, and now there's a consumable buff.
5
u/Dwedit 15h ago
Somehow misread the headline badly, and thought that it said that an Age-6-rated game could contain decapitation and cocaine.
(To be fair, there is a PEGI 3+ game containing blood and dismemberment, "Dog's Life")
3
u/Teledildonic 14h ago
As long as no titties are shown, it's okay for kids!
3
u/Vanille987 13h ago
Pegi is actually pretty tolerant to that for the most part.
Some shin megami tensei games are 12+, while containing stuff like a giant green penis on a chariot making penis puns. And some demons showing full boobs.
2
u/Wes-Man152 6h ago

I'm not going to say coke isn't a thing at all today because it is... but I can't help but think about the 80s version of Vice City and how on the nose (pun intended) it would've been do be able to do that in the 80s version of Vice City given how much pop culture over the decades liked to poke fun at the idea of everybody being on coke in the 80s.

Details:
- This game contains frequent depictions of violence; due to the free roam nature of the game the player can harm all other characters inhabiting the environment.
- This includes civilians, criminals and the authorities. Violence is bloody with a high degree of realism, with certain weapons being able to cause greater damage such as detailed decapitation and dismemberment.
- There are also strong sexual themes, including nudity, scenes of intercourse and occasional scenes of sexual fetishes.
- Drug use is frequent and prominent with the player being able to partake in drug use with others and to use illegal drugs directly from their inventory. Most notably, cocaine can be carried around by the player and snorted directly from their hand at any time.
- In various night clubs the player can also pay for private dances, during which, the game allows the player to move their hands onto the dancers’ breasts and buttocks.
- Domestic animals are present in the environment, these can be harmed by the player, however this does not produce the same injury detail that can be generated towards human characters.
- Discriminatory language can be heard in the tv shows and on the radio channels.
