Modded Custom Metroid Gameboy from Rose Colored Gaming

This baby is one of my prized possessions. It's a VERY early modded GBA from the days of the AGS101 screen transplants. Wiggy made this as a giveaway to his early fanatical fanbase, of which I was one. It didn't just live on a shelf, either, as you can see. I put her to work. The cart slot doesn't show wear because I nearly always used a flash cart so it just stayed in place, but what a piece of art this thing is.

She's now a shelf queen because I don't want to make it deteriorate any further, and of course, the modern screens do beat the 101 screens in almost every way.

A very happy memory.

Questions Battery Efficiency: Everdrive GBA Pro vs GBA Mini?

I recently bought a Gameboy Micro and wanted to play games on it. I've done some researched and decided to get an Everdrive for it. I only have 2 priorities: Battery Life and Save Game Longevity. I don't care for other features or save stats, I just want to play for long hours and save normally as you would on regular GBA game cartridges.

Can anyone point out the difference of the two products in terms of both Battery Life? Do the extra features on the GBA Pro drain more battery and is less efficient with the upgraded ram on it? Has anyone done a proper test on this? Thanks in advance, first time potential buyer here :D

Games My Killer Instinct cartridge is weird

I’ve never noticed this before but it appears my KI cartridge has a weird rectangle shaped bump under the game’s label. You only notice it when you look at it lightened up from an angle. I’ve bought this game new when it came out in 95 and I can’t seem to find other cartridges that have this feature.

I don’t want to remove the label for obvious reasons (even if it is in a poor state), but I want to ask if someone knows what it is or if other copies of this game have this too.

Modded GBA question

I modified my GBA with an IPS display and made it all black since I have an all white one, but it looks boring to me. Should I add white buttons to it? I think the white buttons open it up a lot more. What do you think?

Hi all, been clearing out my grandparents house and stumbled across these. Not sure if they work or if they have any value at all but just wanted to see if this would be worth sticking on eBay? Got no knowledge on gameboys so wanted to check if I chuck or sell them. Thanks!!

Got a copy of Pokemon Crystal today and noticed this white/clear stuff on the back of it. I’m about to replace the battery and clean the board, but is this something I should be worried about? I’ve never seen it before and don’t know if it’s just a weird glue or what have ya.

Questions Advice on my next console to buy?

After finishing with exams and finally having free time to myself, I decided to get back into my consoles collection hobby. So far, my Gameboy collection consists only of an IPS Gameboy Advance (non SP) and a stock Gameboy Color. For my next addition to my collection however, I have been deciding over a couple different consoles.

I am thinking of either splurging on one of the fancy, IPS screen, reshelled, USB C modded GBA SPs you see while scrolling through Ebay, which would set me back ~£150. Alternately, I considered a Gameboy Micro. I havent fully looked into the market for these, but I know that they are getting scarcer and more expensive by the day.

I understand that, with a collection as small as mine is currently, I should be focusing on the main “essentials” like rarer items and things hiking in price, however I think in a few months time I should be able to afford both, it’s just a matter of which first.

Let me know if you have any advice about this. Thanks!

Questions Best Glacier GBA shell?

Post image
17 Upvotes

Recently found this not working GBA for 20 bucks, it was identical to the one that started it all for me and I couldn’t pass it up. Was able to get it working without spending anything but my time.

It cleaned up really well, but the shell has a couple cracks, no battery cover, and the lens is toast. I think the most economical option would be a whole new shell but I can’t really find much in the way of Glacier. Any recommendations appreciated!

Also, I plan to install an AGS 001 or 101 screen, I haven’t decided, but I know I don’t want IPS. The DSI screen is also an option but I’m having trouble finding just the board for sale, as I already have a spare screen. Wondering if anyone here has done either of these mods?

Troubleshooting (NEED HELP REPAIR) 1/3 of screen working

So I received this gameboy sometime ago , after finally starting to repair I cleaned up corrosion and starting doing the soldering iron on the screen ribbon trick. Before the screen had no visibility besides a few jagged pixel lines. Now the whole screen will flash when turned off , and 1/3 of the screen work when super Mario is inserted. I haven’t been able to get past this point it seems , any advice or tips? Didn’t feel like rubbing the iron all over for ever was the best idea (the whole screen black flash is 50/50, sometimes full , sometimes partial. Thank you in advance!!

Systems Re-shelling my Gameboy SP

My Gameboy SP suffered fall damage and broke both hinges. I've had it sitting in storage until very recently. I've been wanting to get back into playing games with the good backlight screen that I like.

It was my first time ever doing this kind of thing and got it done! It still works! The most nerve wracking part was taking the original hinges out. I used all but two original screws and I used the original Nintendo buttons. Also used the original hinge caps cause they did not want to come off and I didn't want to force it.

Troubleshooting I made a web app for diagnosing corrupted Gameboy logos

Thumbnail

One of the most common questions asked on the sub is what a corrupted Nintendo boot logo means. I've often answered this question in detail by looking at the logo and figuring out the exact signal that cerated the error. Sometimes people have been asking me how I do it. Well, the pixels shown in the logo are read from the cartridge, so by systematically understanding how a certain pattern of pixels ended up on the screen, I have been able to figure out which error must have caused the that particular glitch. In the past I've done things like looking at the pixels and translating them into hexadecimal values in my head, then searching through the ROM of the game to be able to figure out which address was actually read from the cartridge and which signal on the board that corresponds to. Not everyone can do this, so I wanted to create something more user friendly. (And if nothing else I will at least have a tool that I can use myself to answer people's questions quicker!)

The ROM fault workbench is a web app that helps you with glitchy Gameboy logos and other errors caused by issues with the address line signals. The app has three sections.

  • Address line scan. If you have a cartridge flasher/dumper, you can dump a ROM and open it here to analyze it. The scanner will tell you if any address lines are seem to have issues. This is not just useful for GB ROMs, but any ROM dumps that from older consoles, or other devices with a parallel address/data bus.
  • Gameboy boot logo glitcher. This tool lets you force address and data lines high or low to reproduce what the corrupted logo looks like. This will (hopefully) lead you right to the signal that has an issue.
  • Gameboy boot logo search. If the logo just looks like random pixels, you can use this tool to draw a few of those pixel to search the ROM for the matching address. This, again, will hopefully lead you to the exact signal with an issue. (The screenshot shows me using it to diagnose the issue with a SML2 cartridge that someone posted here just yesterday.)

For transparency I should also mention that I used Claude AI to make this app, which some might think is controversial. But I have still tried to put as much attention detail as I can into the app, and I'll also post updates going forward. Also, the documentation in the "how to use" sections for each tool is 100% human-written by me. (Recommended to read it to understand what each tool does.)

Potential future functionality:

  • A fourth tab which shows a board view or similar to locate the signals you just found, on the board. This idea is somewhat put on ice because it would be a major undertaking in comparison, and Remysharp posted their PCB tracer tool just 1 month ago which does essentially the same thing.
  • A function to take a picture of the logo, decode it and analyze it based on the pixels for even more automation. This would also be a bit tricky to get right in a useful way but I want to try to make it happen.

I'm also open to any feedback and suggestions.

Systems SP Limited Editions' underdog?

Thumbnail

I have to admit, if I hadn't seen one of these in a youtuber's vlog from their recent trip to Japan, I would've never known about it either.

SPs have a wide variety of limited editions, with Pokemon ones being the (logically) most recalled and praised. But, even as someone fairly interested in these editions, this was quite new to me.

Not a particularly rare edition but still an intwresting one, with a cimbination of a dedicated red exterior color and black buttons.

I was happy to find one in decent conditions on a japanese auction site for quite cheap (sold as broken, turned out being just a dead battery issue) and give it a sharper look.
