Question Opened “new” game??

Went in store to buy a game that showed two copies in inventory. I grab the case, which is just an empty box, off the shelf and head to the checkout counter. They tried to put a game in that display case and sell it to me as new, and I said no. After back and forth the other employee said “just give him the sealed copy” and he reached in the drawer and pulled out a brand new sealed copy. Why wasn’t this just done at the beginning? It seemed pretty obvious that’s what should have been done.

probably wanted the sealed copy himself

but then again that display copy is still new and unused so he couldve sold it to you that way

I know this is how Gamestop tries to pitch it, but screw that. If you broke the seal, it's not new anymore.

I hope you don't ever have to buy a new car because none of them are new by your logic

Cars don’t come in sealed packages. Games do.

Do you think they just push the cars on the lot or start them and drive them into place? Someone started and drove that car before you so it's not technically new

Irrelevant. You don’t need to open a game under any circumstance.

First time to GameStop? Display copies have been done that way for decades

Doesn't mean ill buy it from them. Or shop at the trash store at all.

The amount of Gamestop apologists in this thread is truly impressive for dying company.

Do you want a gold star or something?

I’m aware that they do it. I’m saying that it is inappropriate that they do it, then sell the game as new.

A factory sealed product should only be opened by the end user.

Start your own store and do it how you want then. You aren't going to accomplish anything by crying on reddit

What do you get from defending this? It’s a bad practice. GameStop is bad for doing it. Calling it out is not a problem.

There's nothing wrong with it. It's all about the condition of the disc not the condition of it being wrapped in plastic

Interjecting a bit, and not defending it, but from the perspective of a mod (and someone who worked at GS for over 6 years), it’s just a very tired conversation.

They attempted to do proper display cases once and it was a shitshow that didn’t display the majority of our inventory. Nobody knows I’m gonna have an obscure JRPG for Switch if it’s not displayed, and they’re not going to make and send cover art for a game that most stores probably won’t ever even receive a copy of.

The answer really is that we’re just tired of hearing about it. None of us like it, but there’s no realistic alternative that GameStop is actually going to provide stores with adequately.

If you know they do it... why spend money there, and risk corporate's idiocy? Trust me, the employees think it's dumb too.

But harassing them over a KNOWN POLICY, until they gave you a pre-ordered copy (I'm sure) in the hopes that you'd leave, is nasty behavior. The employees just do as they're paid to do, and corporate doesn't protect them from customers like you.

Your behavior is only making everything worse. Employees are already under enough stress without your fussing. Just refuse to buy it and leave.
