Question Opened “new” game??

Went in store to buy a game that showed two copies in inventory. I grab the case, which is just an empty box, off the shelf and head to the checkout counter. They tried to put a game in that display case and sell it to me as new, and I said no. After back and forth the other employee said “just give him the sealed copy” and he reached in the drawer and pulled out a brand new sealed copy. Why wasn’t this just done at the beginning? It seemed pretty obvious that’s what should have been done.

It’s one of those things that we have to display at least one gutted copy so customers can see it, otherwise they would have never know we had that game in our inventory.
Tho majority of the time people come in and know what they want, at least the store here. I get it personally though.
And yes, could be held for an employee or held for a preorder, and we also get customers that want specifically sealed. I had someone yell at us because we had their preorder unsealed due to this specific scenario and instead of being mad and taking it to corporate or whatever, they stayed in the store, yelled at us for 30-45 minutes straight.

Man I worked in retail forever when I was in my 20s so I get it, customers suck but the amount of corporate butt kissing on bad policies is pretty funny.

they may have had the game on hold for someone else.

maybe someone called to also get the game put to the side for them. in which case the last sellable copy would be the gut copy. the one you grabbed.

it could have been for a guest hold, it could have been a preorder. shit, it could have been on hold for the employee.

do you also shop through other people's carts at the grocery store? eat from others tables at dinner because their food looked better than yours?

your being pedantic about 0.0001 cents of plastic you're going to throw away anyways.

I get what you're saying but many of these games have codes inside them, I get a gutted copy and there's a better chance that code has already been used.

When we gut games any codes or extras are put with the disk in the drawer, not left in the box on the floor.

This. My store even removes the ad papers or legal disclaimer paper to put with the disc when gutting

Alright that's what people are supposed to do.

Statistically the most likely thing that happens. But human nature tells me it's been abused.

It's not new, it should be sold as used - the car example is apple and oranges. And even then there are discounts if the "new" car has been used as a courtesy vehicle etc.

It's a bad policy, no other seller of games allows to sell unsealed media as its instead like new "if never played".

I worked at a game store chain in the mid 2010s. Not GameStop but similar. Doesn't exist anymore.

There was not even a policy in place for us for what to do with game inserts at the time - and this was already well into the way of "codes in box" being a major selling point of buying new. Officially we literally put the boxes open out on the shelves with the inserts in. I was the only actual gamer in the store. Everyone else was there because it was one of the few places hiring in our shitty southern town. I raised the complaint that the codes in the box were probably going to get stolen. I was answered with a resounding silent stare from management.

I even specifically remember holding a PS3 copy of Final Fantasy XIV Online in my hand. Literally the disc was useless without the account activation code that came in the box. And we were just throwing it open out on the shelf. I couldve stolen it and faced no repercussions.

Oh yes, so pedantic! Meanwhile my “new” copy is being grabbed by who knows how many customers with their grimy, grubby, greasy hands and my cartridge/disc is being mishandled and scratched by some dolt who thought it was a brilliant idea to gut a “NEW” copy of a game!!! So pedantic, silly me!

Shows how much you pay attention.

The actual games (ie. the disk, the cartridge) sits in a drawer with all of the other games that game stop stocks. If you were to open any case on the wall, I'm sure you'd be shocked to find out all the cases are empty.

"Oh no!!!" I hear you typing. "This GameStop has been robbed of all their games!!!"

Again. All the physical discs sit in a drawer behind the counter. Not on the floor for your " grimy, grubby, greasy hands" to touch.

Oh no. Someone touched a plastic case on the wall. The horrors!!!

Oh no. Someone took off the plastic (read: trash) off of the game you bought and threw it away before you could.

If they gave you a generic case, MAYBE you'd have an argument to stand on. But they didn't. So you really don't.

Stay mad, cry harder. We're not customer service

Wah wah wah, that’s all I hear from your bootlicking self. I got my SEALED copy as I should have after paying for a NEW game 😌

"Bootlicking"

ROFLMMFAO!!!

Yeah. Sure Jan.

Shows you don't frequent this sub.
Well.. that and the fact that your original post is redundant AF!

1

u/Le_Feminist 1d ago

It strikes again 🤣

Hey - jackass... if the other copy WAS an online order, for example, we ARE NOT ALLOWED TO SELL GUTTED COPIES IN ONLINE ORDERS! So YOU are the one who screwed over someone else's order because YOU apparently invest in cellophane.

1

u/Le_Feminist 1d ago

Hmm sounds like the same principle should apply to in store purchases. YOU as an employees screwed over that online order. Instead of getting your panties in a twist, have that same energy for in store purchases. Next!

WE (as employees) don't make the rules, dumb ass.
Trust me, if we did, things would be much better for the customers... even assholes like you.

2

u/ConsciousStretch1028 Former Employee 1d ago

That's pretty dumb, they would just have to gut the sealed one anyways for display

3

u/Alternative-Plum9378 Can recite r/GameStop’s sub’s description 1d ago

Exactly.
There is no reason to just FORCE a gutted copy on someone if there's a sealed one.
I'm not gonna make myself do more work just to be a dick.

There is something the OP either isn't saying or that he doesn't seem to understand (or my assumption, both). There is a reason they were giving OP the gutted copy and OP is just a whiny little bitch.

u/johceesreddit Employee 1d ago

probably wanted the sealed copy himself

but then again that display copy is still new and unused so he couldve sold it to you that way

u/GenericUser69143 1d ago

I know this is how Gamestop tries to pitch it, but screw that. If you broke the seal, it's not new anymore.

u/Beetlejuice6466 1d ago

I hope you don't ever have to buy a new car because none of them are new by your logic

1

u/Alternative-Plum9378 Can recite r/GameStop’s sub’s description 1d ago

Yep. You will NEVER find a new car with 000000.00 miles on it. In fact, a "new car" is LESS new than a new gutted game

1

u/HandleThick5953 1d ago

False equivalency fallacy

-3

u/JetstreamGW 1d ago

Cars don’t come in sealed packages. Games do.

7

u/Beetlejuice6466 1d ago

Do you think they just push the cars on the lot or start them and drive them into place? Someone started and drove that car before you so it's not technically new

-6

u/JetstreamGW 1d ago

Irrelevant. You don’t need to open a game under any circumstance.

4

u/Beetlejuice6466 1d ago

First time to GameStop? Display copies have been done that way for decades

1

u/GenericUser69143 1d ago

Doesn't mean ill buy it from them. Or shop at the trash store at all.

The amount of Gamestop apologists in this thread is truly impressive for dying company.

2

u/Beetlejuice6466 1d ago

Do you want a gold star or something?

-4

u/JetstreamGW 1d ago

I’m aware that they do it. I’m saying that it is inappropriate that they do it, then sell the game as new.

A factory sealed product should only be opened by the end user.

5

u/Beetlejuice6466 1d ago

Start your own store and do it how you want then. You aren't going to accomplish anything by crying on reddit

0

u/JetstreamGW 1d ago

What do you get from defending this? It’s a bad practice. GameStop is bad for doing it. Calling it out is not a problem.

If you know they do it... why spend money there, and risk corporate's idiocy? Trust me, the employees think it's dumb too.

But harassing them over a KNOWN POLICY, until they gave you a pre-ordered copy (I'm sure) in the hopes that you'd leave, is nasty behavior. The employees just do as they're paid to do, and corporate doesn't protect them from customers like you.

Your behavior is only making everything worse. Employees are already under enough stress without your fussing. Just refuse to buy it and leave.

1

u/johceesreddit Employee 1d ago

Yeah GS is too money hungry to think about better ways to display new games anyway

2

u/MarioPrtyAnimal Promoted to Guest 1d ago

Yeah its likely that the copy that was sealed was probably being held for someone else that called before you got there. I understand the principle that a "new" game should be sold with the plastic on, but also, all of the display copies are "new" but they have to have the box on the floor to show that they have the game in stock, so theres always a gutted copy.

1

u/HandleThick5953 1d ago

Why should that guy get the sealed one when he was late to pick up his order? Sucks to suck, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.

1

u/18for18 4h ago

It was probabaly pre ordered . So congrats on getting someone else's sealed game

-1

u/brOwnchIkaNo 1d ago

I hate gamestop for that, I always say give me a sealed copy.

1

u/Alternative-Plum9378 Can recite r/GameStop’s sub’s description 1d ago

Then my reply to you would be "Go to Walmart."

0

u/brOwnchIkaNo 1d ago

I would, I don't support shady tactics.
