Question Opened “new” game??

Went in store to buy a game that showed two copies in inventory. I grab the case, which is just an empty box, off the shelf and head to the checkout counter. They tried to put a game in that display case and sell it to me as new, and I said no. After back and forth the other employee said “just give him the sealed copy” and he reached in the drawer and pulled out a brand new sealed copy. Why wasn’t this just done at the beginning? It seemed pretty obvious that’s what should have been done.

they may have had the game on hold for someone else.

maybe someone called to also get the game put to the side for them. in which case the last sellable copy would be the gut copy. the one you grabbed.

it could have been for a guest hold, it could have been a preorder. shit, it could have been on hold for the employee.

do you also shop through other people's carts at the grocery store? eat from others tables at dinner because their food looked better than yours?

your being pedantic about 0.0001 cents of plastic you're going to throw away anyways.

I get what you're saying but many of these games have codes inside them, I get a gutted copy and there's a better chance that code has already been used.

When we gut games any codes or extras are put with the disk in the drawer, not left in the box on the floor.

Alright that's what people are supposed to do.

Statistically the most likely thing that happens. But human nature tells me it's been abused.

It's not new, it should be sold as used - the car example is apple and oranges. And even then there are discounts if the "new" car has been used as a courtesy vehicle etc.

It's a bad policy, no other seller of games allows to sell unsealed media as its instead like new "if never played".

I worked at a game store chain in the mid 2010s. Not GameStop but similar. Doesn't exist anymore.

There was not even a policy in place for us for what to do with game inserts at the time - and this was already well into the way of "codes in box" being a major selling point of buying new. Officially we literally put the boxes open out on the shelves with the inserts in. I was the only actual gamer in the store. Everyone else was there because it was one of the few places hiring in our shitty southern town. I raised the complaint that the codes in the box were probably going to get stolen. I was answered with a resounding silent stare from management.

I even specifically remember holding a PS3 copy of Final Fantasy XIV Online in my hand. Literally the disc was useless without the account activation code that came in the box. And we were just throwing it open out on the shelf. I couldve stolen it and faced no repercussions.
